Chair’s Report

In various ways this has been a troubling year for many, and for me personally. From my own perspective, it started well, but then it hit a few road bumps, then skidded, crashed and tumbled out of control, thankfully stopping short of being a complete ‘write off’. Yet, whilst absent for much of the year, dealing with the aforementioned ‘car crash’, I have been encouraged by keeping abreast of goings on in the Benefice, which despite the trials, have been progressing well.

I’m pleased to see we have new volunteers and ministries popping up in each of our Parishes, we are seeing growth in some key areas, and the school ministry I share with so many of you has continued to thrive. There is lots to celebrate. Not least because of all the wonderful people who have stepped up throughout the year to fill in the gaps left by my prolonged leave. Thank you.

However, we have also seen some sadnesses. We’ve lost some dedicated and much-loved members of our Church family, several in fact. And several more are now battling with serious illnesses, our Love and prayers remain with you always. As I have written, a very troubling year indeed.

Throughout it all I have found God to be the one constant in my life that never leaves me. I hope you have too. Through the good, the bad and the downright awful, God has been there each and every step. Sometimes it takes something rubbish happening to realise that. To know, we are not alone.

Because you’re not alone, none of you. You all have God by your side. We also have each other to lean on.

I wish I had more to say, but quite frankly, I’m keen to put the last year behind me. Writing this being one of the last few acts of the period. So instead, I will simply encourage you to do three things, read the Bible, Pray and Worship in the fellowship of others. In all sincerity and with great experience, in those three things, you will realise you were never alone and more so, you are part of the biggest family that ever was.

With every Blessing,

Fr Stephen

Team Rector and Chair of St John the Evangelist Church PCC

PCC Secretary’s Report

I took over as PCC secretary on 14[th] September 2023 following the very sad passing of Dorothy McGlynn on 26[th] May 2023. Dorothy was a dedicated servant to St Johns Church, school and the community including in her roles as PCC secretary and Deputy Chair of Governors at St Johns School. Dorothy is sadly missed.

The year began with PCC meetings on 12 January 2023 and 16[th] March 2023 . On 16[th] March 2023 the audited year end accounts were presented and approved. Father Stephen also expressed thanks to the Tuesday Gang, who had cleared brambles from the new church yard and made space for more ashes plots. They had also started to tidy the wild area in the church yard. Susan Stevens informed members that St John’s Church would be receiving a legacy of £2,000, from the estate of Betty Higham.

The Annual Parochial Church Council Meeting took place on 13[th] April 2023 and the PCC meeting followed immediately thereafter. The appointment of officers were confirmed.

Over the weekend of 17[th] June 2023 there was heavy rainfall over the Saturday and Sunday causing a large leak on the North side of church as well as causing the ceiling to collapse in the kitchen area and the power to cut. This coincided with a period of sick leave of Father Stephen and was a very challenging time and special thanks go to the wardens, the PCC, the Area Dean, and particular thanks to Steph Buckley for having to step in over that very challenging period.

Dorothy’s funeral was able to take place in Church on 21[st] June 2023.

The new Archdeacon, Dr Rachel Mann, announced the closure of church on 25[th] June 2023.

The PCC met on 29[th] June 2023 and the meeting was attended by Area Dean, Simon Cook and convened at his home with a single item agenda to consider the issues with the church roof and the temporary closure of the church. The Chair of the Diocesan Advisory Committee had visited the church and advised that the church should be closed with the Archdeacon agreeing. St Peter’s Primary School kindly offered use of the school for services and the PCC have subsequently thanked them by way of a donation as indicated below. The Bishop had granted a licence for 3 months to worship in St Peter’s School. PCC volunteers agreed to telephone those on the electoral roll to inform them of the situation.

During the meeting it was agreed that there was a need to identify funds for restoration and what remedial work was needed. Authority was delegated to a smaller group to liaise with the Diocesan Advisory Committee and contractors for costings and to report back. It was agreed all correspondence which would normally go to the incumbent would be able to be sent to Steph Buckley with Fr Stephen Nolan as incumbent to be kept informed of significant steps. The PCC voted for weddings to take place in other churches in the team as are a united benefice. Area Dean Simon Cook explained that baptisms could take place in St Peter’s or be rescheduled.

The first Sunday service at St Peter’s took place on 2[nd] July 2023 and was led by Steph Buckley and Alison Mole, supported by Liz Cook. Alison Bradley and helpers ensured tea, coffee and biscuits were available after the service as usual. The Area Dean, Simon Cook

dashed from another service to preside over Communion. Again thanks go to Steph Buckley together with Alison Mole, Liz Cook, Michelle Winter and Judith Birchall to ensure services were able to go ahead at St Peter’s and were well attended.

By the summer of 2023 four mowers were meeting on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Whilst the church was temporarily closed the “Dust Busting” ladies, who take great care in keeping the inside of the church pristine, retrained and were clearing the stone memorials.

The Bolton Deanery Summer Praise took place at Bolton Parish Church hosted by the Bolton Central Mission Community on 13[th] July with a good representation from St Johns. The sermon was given by the new Bishop of Bolton, Dr Matthew Porter.

Extensive fundraising took place over the summer. The Summer Fair was held on 22[nd] July 2023 at Trinity Church, who had kindly agreed to St Johns holding the fair there, which resulted in good footfall and interest. There were refreshments, stalls and raffle tickets sold and Area Dean Revd Simon appeared in the Stocks willing to be soaked! It was a real family feel with children and adults volunteering to help. Thank you to all who contributed and helped to organise. £2577.76 was raised which was a fantastic amount. Further church fund raising took place with Sarah Baron and Susan Stevens making and selling hanging baskets and James Stevens completing his first Triathlon in memory of his auntie, Dorothy McGlynn raising £1190.

All Age services continued to be held at St Peters and the September all age service was led by Liz Cook and Alison Mole on the theme of “help” and going back to school. It was lovely to see St John’s guides at the service after a two year break and they now meet on Tuesdays from 7pm to 830pm at St John’s Primary School with the qualified leaders, Skylark, Pippen and Wren undertaking activities every week and attending outdoor trips.

The 9th September was St John’s Church’s birthday. St John’s was consecrated on 9th September 1826 with the first stone laid in 1824 and we are therefore approaching the 200 year anniversary of the church and it will soon be time to start thinking about celebrations in readiness for the 200th birthday in 2026.

In September a service was held at Manchester Cathedral to celebrate the authorisation and commissioning of authorised lay ministers, including Alison Mole.

The PCC met on 14th September 2023 . Again the meeting was attended by the Area Dean and I was elected as PCC secretary and all . Sandra Croston had agreed to continue in post as treasurer and all voted in favour. All voted in favour that Susan Stevens be elected as Holland’s Trust representative. Everyone’s prayers were with Father Stephen. It was confirmed that Father Stephen was to commence a phased return the following week and the Area Dean thanked everyone who had stepped up in his absence and thanked Steph Buckley particularly, and Judith as church warden too. Steph thanked the Area Dean and the Archdeacon for their assistance indicating that they had been a huge support to her during this difficult period. Queries were raised about the finances to be confirmed at the next meeting. Details of invoices for work undertaken were provided. It was agreed that payment towards the Parish Share should be made as soon as possible and this was deferred to the next meeting to be considered by Fr Stephen. All voted in favour of the resolution “ to seek an instrument from the Bishop which will permit couples with a right to marry in this parish to be able to marry and have banns of marriage published in any of the parishes in the Team ” and it was agreed this should extend to Baptisms.

The roof condition report was noted to be positive in that the church is overall structurally sound with some repair work recommended including full roof maintenance, cleaning all gutters/pipes & overflow chutes, isolated slate repairs and replacement of missing/damaged abutment flashings. It was confirmed that work had to be undertaken by an approved diocese contractor. John Walsh, the Chair of the Diocesan Advisory Committee, had agreed to a return to St John’s Church subject to a full electrical safety report and the kitchen area being closed until the ceiling was made safe and repaired.

It was noted that the signing off of school forms was a priority as families were asking about it and it was suggested that the wardens could assist with the process if welcomed by Father Stephen. It was agreed to defer decisions about the confirmation service to Father Stephen on his return. A key audit was agreed. All voted in favour authorising Alison Mole as Authorised Lay Minister in children and worship.

St Peters school was at full capacity for the October All Age Service with lots of food and toiletries donated for Farnworth Food Bank.

By the time of the next PCC meeting held at St Peters on 12[th] October 2023. Fr Stephen had returned but was unable to attend the meeting. Heritage Conservation had suggested that the work to the roof was postponed until the leaves had fallen to avoid repeat work. The need for regular maintenance was to be discussed with Father Stephen. It was raised that the louvres need grills to stop the pigeons going in. The EICR electrical remedial work had been completed. As indicated above John Walsh had authorised the return to church on the completion of the electrical remedial work and on the basis that the kitchen area be closed off and not be used until the ceiling had been made safe and it was confirmed that a risk

assessment would be required. A vote was taken and it was unanimously agreed that we return to St Johns Church on 29[th] October 2023 allowing two weeks for announcements and informing members on the electoral role.

The PCC wished to express their thanks to St Peters school for making the venue available which is very much appreciated. A donation of £100 was agreed by all present at the PCC to be used for the benefit of the children.

The Parish Share was considered. Steph Buckley proposed payment of £10,000 and there was a unanimous vote in favour. A unanimous vote was held in favour for the re-nomination of Kim McIntyre as Holland’s Trust representative. All present also voted in favour of Susan Stevens as St Johns Foundation Governor. There was a discussion about St Peters admissions policy and form signing. Chris Gee had been nominated in writing as PCC member in advance of the meeting by Cynthia Gethin and seconded by Susan Stevens and declared elected.

The Christmas Fair was held on 11[th] November 2023 at Trinity Church opened by St John’s School Choir who sang beautifully with a special appearance from Father Christmas. Again Trinity Church was packed with support from many members of the local community raising a fantastic £2241.50.

By 12[th] November we were back in Church for the All Age Service of Remembrance . The wreaths were laid by Denise Entwistle and the brownies and Kim McIntyre read the names

of all from church who had lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. Petals fell from the balconies during the Last Post.

At the 29[th] November PCC meeting it was confirmed that a risk assessment was in writing with concerns about falling paint and plaster and loose carpet edging which was subsequently taped down. It was minuted that Steven Mann had undertaken an updating risk assessment and identified the loose carpet as an issue as had Father Stephen who has undertaken a dynamic risk assessment earlier that day.

The maintenance on the roof had been undertaken by Heritage Conservation with reference in the report to abatement flashing being missing. The loss adjustor had indicated that the limit would be for the internal works and that where the loss relates to the theft of metal there needs to be a police/crime report and protection with SmartWater or alternative forensic marking system agreed by the insurers and the associated signage and registration with SmartWater Technology Limited or the alternative provider. Father Stephen indicated that mortar had come away before he went off sick and the mortar had to be replaced and AG Wood had completed the work.

Father Stephen proposed a further £5,000 payment towards the Parish Share all voting in favour totalling £15,000 contribution.

The Tuesday gang had suggested temporary repairs to the ceiling which required the authorisation of the Archdeacon. Fr Stephen also suggested a temporary remedy which would enable use of the kitchen by buying an indoor marquee. It was indicated by Fr Stephen that the Quinquennial report would form the basis for future maintenance and that the report would be circulated.

There was a discussion about the bells which hadn’t been working since the electrician has been. The bell ringers had been informed that attendance on Fridays was no longer an option due to the Narcotics Anonymous group attending and an offer was to be made of alternative timings which is to be followed up.

A nomination of Tony Hemming as PCC member had been received from Susan Stevens, seconded by Judith Birchall, and Tony was declared elected.

The Experience Christmas Event took place from 21[st] to 23[rd] November and St Johns welcomed over 260 year 3 children from seven local primary schools. Thank you to Kim McIntyre, Judith Birchall, Alison Bradbury, June Eatock, Denise Entwistle, Gill Hadfield, Rob McIntyre and Susan Stevens for making it happen.

The Christmas Carol service was held on 10[th] December 2023 attended by the Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Mohammed Ayub and by St Johns, All Saints and St Peters Schools.

The Christingle Service was held on Christmas Eve at 6pm and over £300 was raised for the Children’s Society and Midnight Mass was held at the earlier time of 9pm when it is midnight in Bethlehem.

Treasurer report

Looking at the accounts for 2023 it would seem that we made a profit of £11,457, however the Quota of £15,000 (shortfall) was not paid until January this year. Realistically we have ended 2023 with a £3500 loss. Please bear this in mind also that at the end of this financial year we will have accounted for two lots of Quota payments.

Looking at our expenditure the energy crisis that has hit us all hard has also hit the church very hard! The total cost was over £32,000, £20,000 more than in 2022 and is by far our biggest expense. The weather has also been against us with the flood, this has currently cost the church £3,300 and we are still in a state of disrepair so more future expense to come.

On a positive note the service collections and donations has increased by £4,700. We are also owed £726 from The Hollands Trust Fund because we still have no signatory for that account. This is not from lack of trying to get this sorted with HSBC.

To close, I would like to thank all involved who organise and volunteer their time for fairs and events. This raised £5775 so well done to all and this really makes a difference. Thanks also to Tony Hemming for all his help.

Sandra Croston, Treasurer

Planned Giving and Gift Aid

In 2023 there were 29 contributors (giving either via an envelope or through a bank standing order) down from 33 in 2022 and 40 in 2021.

26 members had signed up to the Gift Aid Scheme, and the amount of tax reclaimed on their donations, with the addition of those who had signed One-Off Donation envelopes, amounted to £5,245 in 2023 which is down by £623 compared with 2022 and down by £833 compared with 2021.

Due to HMRC’s Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (or GASDS for short) which was introduced in April 2013, we are now able to claim ‘top-up’ payments on amounts of up to £8,000 on none Gift Aided cash donations of £30 or less. The income from this amounted to £1,605.37.

As you can see from the above, we are continuing to experience a severe decline in income, which I hope can be reversed.

Thank you to all who contribute through Planned Giving and the Gift Aid Scheme.

Tony Hemming

Warden report

It has been a trying year. We have had storm damage and flood from the parapet which brought the ceiling in the kitchen area down, damage to the ceiling, carpet and upstairs. It made it harder with Father Stephen being off. Trying to sort things out was a nightmare.

The summer and winter fares brough good money in. Thanks to Trinity church for their kind offer of the load of the room at no cost.

Thanks to St Peter’s for the use of the studio for our Sunday services while the church was unusable.

Hopefully now we can move forward in repairing the damage and getting the church back to normal.

Numbers are dwindling in the congregation. So God willing when the Church is repaired we can look forward to seeing the numbers rise. So let’s go forth and praise the lord for help and guidance.

Judith Birchall, Warden

Authorised Lay Minister report

A very good Reverend friend of mine once said to me the words ‘all will be well’

These words I think of frequently, no more so throughout the challenges of 2023. In the children’s song ‘The rain come down and the floods came up ‘we at St. John’s experienced the rain came down and rain came in!

For the first time in my life, church could not be in church -or could it? I suppose it depends on how you define church – is it the church as in the building -is it the gathering of people, wherever that may be , to worship and praise God ?

Through the support of St. Peter’s school, Steph, Liz and I were able to provide a safe space for St. Johns to continue to worship every week. Initially for me this was very different and somewhat challenging but after a few weeks it became the norm. I enjoyed the differences it brought as did others. One of the positives for myself and Liz was that we could hear the congregation singing and it was good. Another positive was that our congregation grew whilst at St. Peters which meant at one of the services it was standing room only. I would also like to thank Our Area Dean,Simon Cook and Archdeacon Rachel Mann for all their support and facilitating communion services whilst Vicar Stephen was off.

Our intergenerational service on the second Sunday of each Month has continued to thrive and grow though out the year.

Myself, Steph and Liz continue receive great feedback from the congregation each month saying how much they enjoy coming.

We have continued to have new worship songs with or without actions and traditional hymns. We encourage participation of the congregation. It is amazing to see how the confidence of members of the congregation has grown and have become very willing volunteers to join in.

I find my Authorised Lay Ministry very rewarding and enjoyable and would greatly encourage others to look at the training. I am always encouraged and amazed by the support I receive from all at church and the good attendance from my Brownies.

Thank you all for your support and remember ‘all will be well ‘

Alison Mole, Authorised Lay Minister

Electoral Roll Officer’s report

==> picture [76 x 58] intentionally omitted <==

The Electoral Roll started last year at 111 members. Fortunately, I can once again report an increase in the roll for this year. Even after the loss of some of the older members of the congregation and people moving away. We are lucky to have recruited new members, so the roll stands at 114.

Although, I dislike being pessimistic, I am concerned that next year, when we need to compile a completely new roll our numbers will decrease dramatically because I know there are people’s names on the present roll who no longer attend regularly. So, will not qualify for inclusion on the new roll. I think is something that we should be aware of.

Kim McIntyre, Electoral Roll Officer

Child Protection

This report thankfully will be short and sweet.

2023 has come and gone with no issues that I am aware of.

I have had two requests for DBS checks, one that has been successful and one that I have unable to complete due to me being deleted from the check website.

I raised this and have been told that all DBS checks are up to date and have been completed by someone else. This is confusing as I had no idea this had been done.

Due to the lack of communication to me regarding this I have decided I will no longer carry on this role as it seems to be covered elsewhere.

We will always continue to offer our children a safe and caring environment to come and learn and play, and I would like to thank all in advance who want to continue working with children for their continuing work mentoring, teaching and protecting our parish’s young minds.

God bless

Shaun Croston

Social Media Report 2023

Facebook and Twitter followers are both still actively used. Facebook followers have shown a 22% increase from 424 to 519. Twitter is looked after by Nigel McFarlane. Its following is steady, down by just 1, from 282 to 281. We no longer have access to the website statistics and so we are not able to monitor activity.

Thank you to all that have made contributions, please keep up the good work. The more we use these sites, the more useful they become.

Head Teacher Report from All Saints’ CE Primary

This is my 11[th] and final annual report From All Saints, as I leave this Summer to join The Orchards Federation. Writing this is my first ‘last’ time I’ll do something and it’s making me particularly reflective. In my time as Head Teacher, we have worked with our community and our Governors to agree our whole school vision and values. Our three core values are Friendship, Fellowship and Hope, and they still underpin all that we do. Dorothy McGlynn played a key role in developing this work. We still miss her horribly; she was a passionate advocate for All Saints and all that we do here, and will always be remembered.

Friendship

==> picture [160 x 127] intentionally omitted <==

Our children are good friends to each other, as are our staff. All Saints is a lovely place to be! Behaviour is good, as our children use the Opal Play Scheme that we introduced last year. This sees them play with lego, dolls, blocks, sand and scooters at playtimes. They play with children from their own and other classes. This year, we opened a High Needs Base Nursery provision, offering 6 places each morning and afternoon to children with additional needs. The children are placed with us by Bolton LA but spend time in our outdoor area with the rest of our Nursery children. It’s lovely to see all of our children playing together like this.

The community at church also continue to be good friends to us. Our children have enjoyed coming to Experience Christmas and Experience Easter, and our choir wowed the congregation at the Carol Service in December. Father Stephen’s weekly worship in school is a highlight of our worship calendar for lots of our children. Y6 attended the Diocesan Leavers’ service at Manchester cathedral, and enjoyed the songs so much that they are now staple additions to our music in school. ‘I just want to say thank you’ is a real ear worm; if you hear it, you’ll be singing it all day! We also attended the church leavers’ service, hosted in St John’s school due to the flood. This was a great opportunity for all of our Y6 pupils to celebrate together.

Fellowship

==> picture [202 x 128] intentionally omitted <==

Our community at All Saints is incredibly diverse, and this really is one of the best things about our school. Our children learn about different faiths, cultures, and family backgrounds every day, as they chat to their friends. Our Muslim families join us in our Nativity and Carol Services as well as our Easter service. Our Christian families join us at our Eid assembly. This year, for the first time, we have hosted an Iftar meal. The Muslim festival of Ramadan has fallen at the same time as Lent and so we have had lots of opportunities to draw

parallels between these holy times. Ramadan ends each day with a meal – the Iftar, which translates to break fast ‘ and prayers. Our families came together to share food and prayer. These were very similar to the intersessional prayers in church. Our community also worked together for our annual Harvest collection and worship, where we donate to the foodbank at The Well.

==> picture [452 x 160] intentionally omitted <==

We have continued to work closely with our other Farnworth schools. #Farnworth matters is now a well-established part of the Y5 calendar, and the end of year celebration event at Bolton school is an amazing celebration of all that they do. I am very glad that my new job keeps me in Farnworth!

Hope

==> picture [141 x 151] intentionally omitted <==

I wrote last year that I hoped we would continue to build on our strong foundations. We did! Our Maths progress was in the top 3% nationally, and our phonics and times tables data were also above average. We are oversubscribed for September, with 48 first choice applicants for our 30 Reception places. Our Nursery is so full we’re having to turn children away until September. The journey that we have been on in my time here has been phenomenal. It has been an absolute privilege to be the leader of the school in this time. I’m very sad to be leaving, but All Saints will forever have a space in my heart. God has his plans, and I trust that the next stage will be even better than the last one. Thank you to all who have helped us and held us in your prayers.

This year’s report follows a really successful year at ST John’s CE Kearsley.

The school achieved the ‘National Nurturing School Award’ in June 2023 –making St John’s the only National Nurturing School in Bolton.

As Head teacher of St John’s feel exceptionally proud of all the children, parents and staff who work tirelessly to ensure St John’s goes from strength to strength living out our motto!

‘Striving for Excellence – Trusting in God!’

Spring term 2023

During the Spring term our main themes for Collective Worship were revisiting our ‘Nurture Principles’ and our school’s ‘Christian Values’ each introduced on a Monday by the Head teacher. Our weekly family worship resumed at St John’s Church on Thursday mornings, which was lovely as many parents started to join us too. The children love having the opportunity to get together and celebrate God’s love as a school family.

==> picture [452 x 127] intentionally omitted <==

Our Prayer Tree focus this term had each class writing prayers based on the school’s Christian values of ‘Forgiveness, Respect, Encouragement, Kindness, Love and Equality – these prayer were displayed in the main school foyer and are used in worship throughout the week.

Celebration Worship continued to be held on Friday afternoons and we were regularly joined by up to 15 or so parents which again is lovely to see. We focused on our ‘Super Learners’, ‘Above and Beyond Awards’ as well awards linked to our worship focus each week – looking for children who lived out our ‘Christian Value’ of the week.

Alison Adlum from ‘The Changing Places Team’ worked alongside one of our Teaching Assistant, Ms Winter, with our ‘Faithful Friends’ again this Spring term and they led another Student Leadership Group worship about ‘worship’ and what it means and how we can ‘worship’ God in many different ways. They even suggested ways to enhance our ‘Worship Areas’ in classrooms.

==> picture [117 x 128] intentionally omitted <==

The Infant classes had a visit from Steph Openshaw in February to restart Wiggle Worship – this is led by Mrs Roberts alongside Ms Winter. They looked at a new resources called ‘Fun with God’

We resumed our Class Worship with Seahorses and Turtles all holding a worship in the Spring term. Parents of each class were invited and these were very well attended.

Our ‘Seeds and Gardeners’ Student Leadership Group led their worship this term as well as the Sports Crew bringing all the classes up to speed with developments in their areas of leadership.

Our children all had the opportunity to take part in the International Aid Trust ‘Shoebox Appeal’ Each class created 2 show boxes filled with lovely gifts for a boy and girl – which were then delivered to St Andrew’s Church over the Easter break to be taken to Sierra Leone and the Ukraine – we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our families.

We also were able to hold our annual Easter Services on 30th March for both the infants and juniors which were well attended and retold the Easter Story as well as looking at the symbolism of Easter and new Life.

Our annual Egg Decorating competition was as fierce as always with prises for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each year group.

==> picture [275 x 149] intentionally omitted <==

Summer term 2023

During the Summer term our main themes for Collective Worship were ‘HEARTSMART – High 5’ and looking at ‘British Values’ and how they are lived out at St John’s. They were introduced on a Monday in worship by the Head teacher and followed up by staff and children throughout the week. Weekly family worship had to be put on hold at St John’s Church on Thursdays due to compassionate leave of Father Stephen.

Celebration Worship is still held on Friday afternoons and we are regularly joined by up to 15 or so parents which again is lovely to see. We focus on our ‘Super Learners’, ‘Above and Beyond Awards’ as well awards linked to our worship focus each week. Where children are celebrated who live out the British Value we are focusing on during the week.

Canon Jill Pilling came to visit the school and meet the staff in light of our application to become part of the Archbishop Temple Trust. Staff had the opportunity to ask any questions and to listen to the vision of the Trust, what it can offer St John’s and what we can bring to this strong primary Trust.

Our Y6 children attended a Leavers’ Service at Manchester Cathedral on 15th June – hosted by Bishop Mark Davies, the Bishop of Middleton. This was a lovely way to celebrate the spiritual journey of our oldest children- as many children do not have the opportunity continue on to a faith secondary school.

Our Class Worship saw Starfish class leading a worship in the Summer term. Parents of each class were invited and these are usually well attended.

Our ‘Seeds and Gardeners’ Student Leadership Group led their worship this term as well as the Sports Crew bringing all the classes up to speed with developments in their areas of leadership.

St John’s hosted the Farnworth Church Schools’ Leavers service with Y6 children from St Peter’s, All Saints and St James’ all coming together to celebrate being part of Farnworth Church Schools for the last 7 years.

==> picture [303 x 192] intentionally omitted <==

Our Y6 leavers also held their Leavers Service in school to celebrate their memories and experience of their time at St John’s – as normal this was very well attended by parents and families.

Autumn term 2023

During the Autumn term our main themes for Collective Worship were our school’s ‘Christian Values’ and our new ‘Christian Vision’.

‘For I know the plans I have for you – plans to prosper you, plans to give you hope and a future’ Jeremiah 29:11

Worship was introduced on a Monday by the Head teacher and followed up by staff and children throughout the week. Weekly family worship was unfortunately still on hold at St John’s Church on Thursdays due to ongoing compassionate leave of Father Stephen.

Celebration Worship was held on Friday afternoons and we were regularly joined by up to 15 or so parents which again is lovely to see. We focused on our ‘Super Learners’, ‘Above and Beyond Awards’ as well awards linked to our ‘Christian Vision’ focus each week.

Our Class Worship saw Foxes, Badgers and Squirrels classes leading a worship in the Autumn term. Parents of each class were invited and these are usually well attended. Our ‘Prefects’ Student Leadership Group led their worship this term as well as the ‘Faithful Friends’ bringing all the classes up to speed with developments in their areas of leadership.

Our ‘Seeds and Gardeners ‘ welcomed the newest members of the school into the family of St John’s – this worship was held in school due to structural issues in Church – all children received a ‘wooden cross’ as a memento of their special worship.

We were blessed to have a visit from Bishop Mark – the Bishop of Middleton came to visit St John’s school on 6th October to see our Nurturing School in action. He spent time visiting every class and talking with the children about his life as a Bishop – the children asked some amazing questions. He led a worship and talked to the children about how proud he was of St John’s in achieving its National Nurturing School Award!

We also were able to hold our annual Harvest Services for both the whole school which was well attended and all food donations went to Farnworth Foodbank – the generosity of our families under difficult circumstance always amazes us.

Our Children’s Chaplains attended the Archbishop Temple Trust Service on 8th November at Bolton Parish Church where they shared our new Christian Vision and St John’s school prayer. The children represented St John’s amazingly and spoke so well in front of a whole church full!

Thankfully due to the hard work of the PCC and St John’s congregation the children in Year 3 were still able to take part in Experience Christmas over at St John’s church- this was wonderful and very much appreciated by staff and the children.

Our children all had the opportunity to make Christingles in school. This culminated in a whole school service at St John’s Church on Thurs 23rd November – again this was really well attended by families.

Our annual Tree Dressing, on 5th December, was a highlight of the Autumn term with parents being welcomed in to join the children as they decorated our beautiful Christmas Tree and celebrated Advent with songs and poems.

==> picture [171 x 227] intentionally omitted <==

The Children Changing Places Team also attended to deliver a ‘Wiggle Worship’ on 12th December which was well attended by parents and families.

This year’s Infant Nativity was ‘A Wiggly Nativity’ which was really well attended. We were also joined by Canon Pilling and Nikki Patel; from the Archbishop Temple Trust. They were both very complimentary of our children’s performances. The term ended with a fabulous Junior Carol Service held at St John’s Church retelling the story of the nativity through bible reading, prayer and hymns on Thursday 21st December.

Finally I would like to thank all of my children, staff and Governors for all their hard work and continued support through what has been a very successful and rewarding time for the family of St John’s.

2023 was once again a year filled with opportunities for our community to work with purposeful effort, driving forward our school aims, ethos, values and vision.

What is our school Christian vision?

Our values, rooted in our Christian FAITH, are the underlying guiding principles of all our work.

==> picture [225 x 140] intentionally omitted <==

Our vision is to develop our children to enable them to create the future they aspire for themselves, inspired by God, influenced by the teachings of Jesus and underpinned by Christian Values; rooted in The Bible and the word of God.

Our intention is that our children will “contribute to and prosper in society”, bringing God’s plan for them to fruition.

Our school purpose is to signal a route to a life that many don’t think possible! We aim to maximise social mobility, with God’s support & guidance! This purpose is embedded in the following words taken from The Bible Jeremiah 29;11

==> picture [452 x 77] intentionally omitted <==

We believe this purpose and Christian vision will be achieved if we provide an environment where our children are enabled to “Learn, Sparkle & Shine…”

But what does “Learn, Sparkle & Shine…” mean?

Our school demographics and context require that we provide a curriculum that;

  - promotes high aspiration **(learn)** Provide wisdom

==> picture [452 x 119] intentionally omitted <==

Our daily work is dedicated to achieving these aims so that our children leave school ready to be beacons of light in society.

==> picture [452 x 87] intentionally omitted <==

At St. Peter’s each term is dedicated to promoting a particular Christian value, linked to a theme which the children are able to commit to memory and recite to SLT, staff and each other; to ensure the message is embedded for the children and is linked to their thoughts and actions. Weekly worship is dedicated to exemplifying and developing the children’s knowledge and understanding of that theme, through song, story and prayer. The themes for the spring and summer terms of the 22-23 academic year are shown below.

==> picture [452 x 152] intentionally omitted <==

September 2023 saw a development of this work, with the themes for the year, already mapped out, with every half term linked one of our FAITH values and rooted in an extract from The Bible. The worship map for 23-24 is shown below.

Visit from Mr Warburton

In May 2023 we were delighted and honoured to be visited by members of the Warburton’s bread-making family, who came to visit our school breakfast club. Our breakfast club provides a safe, warm environment for our pupils each morning and Warburtons work with the charity Magic Breakfast to support breakfast clubs across the entire country. For them to visit us as a ‘flagship’ school was indeed an honour and a privilege.

School Streets Initiative, Tuesday Trotter park at Tesco – June 2023

In June 2023, we were the first school in Bolton to apply for and successfully be granted a ‘school street’ initiative. This is a pupil led project, in collaboration with Bolton Council, in which the streets around school are closed, through a road traffic order, at school drop off and pick up times. This has been a fantastic development for the school and helps to ensure cleaner, greener, healthier and safer journeys to and from school. At present the road closure only happens on Tuesday, and is supported by our “Tuesday Trotter park at Tesco” slogan, however, due to the success of the initiative we intend to extend it to every day of the week in the summer term of this year.

Pupil led services

Our pupil led services continue to be a highlight of our school year, with attendance from our parents often leading to the school hall being standing room only.

Partnership with The Parish.

Our partnership with the parish continues to flourish.

Following the unexpected temporary closure of St Johns Church for a short period of time in the late summer, early Autumn of 2023, we were proud and honoured to be able to offer our studio space each Sunday to the parish community to allow worship to continue to happen each week. Despite early challenges, the school very quickly adapted to opening its doors each week to welcome the parishioners, the highlight being a room that was bulging and overflowing for the autumnal harvest service.

The children are regular visitors to St Johns Church and participate in all the ‘Experience’ events that the church hosts. It was lovely to see Y2 experiencing a sense of awe and wonder as they were allowed to ‘investigate and explore’ the church as part of their curriculum work.

==> picture [452 x 450] intentionally omitted <==

Our shine team were delighted to participate in the Children Changing Places celebration service held at Bolton Parish Church in November 2023.

==> picture [452 x 256] intentionally omitted <==

Café Church is now a well established monthly event, held in school and let by Mrs Buckley (ALM). The congregation continues to grow each month, not only in number, but also in generosity of spirit and engagement. The monthly services, involving craft, fun, song and prayer are a source of spiritual flourishing and friendly comfort for all those who attend,

Our weekly “peopods” parent and toddler group also has a foundation in our Christian values and provides a nurturing space for our youngest Farnworthians each Thursday morning.

Fr Stephen continues to be a valuable provider of spiritual guidance for our school community; staff and pupils alike, through his inspirational and entertaining weekly Wednesday worship. We thank him for his guidance and presence in our school.

Charity and partnership work and awards

A recent initiative has been to introduce class partnerships with specific charities. Charities have been chosen to be relatable to the children in a personal way e.g. MIND to support mental health, Cancer research UK in support of a staff member who recently died from cancer, World Vision to support education in impoverished countries and Cystic Fibrosis charity in recognition of a pupil with this condition.

==> picture [420 x 251] intentionally omitted <==

==> picture [452 x 196] intentionally omitted <==

The impact of this empathetic work, directly focussed on increasing positive mental health, through partnering with charities, thus creating awe and gratitude, is that despite our demographic, school is an exceptionally calm place with a strong focus on positive relationships between all members of our community.

Furthermore our curriculum is enriched through engaging with a wide variety of partners and external providers. Our partnerships are purposeful, impactful and reciprocal in nature, benefitting pupils, the community and the partner alike. Our aim for our pupils to contribute to and prosper in society can only be accomplished through strong community partnerships.

Consequently, in November 2023 our school was named as the winner of the ‘Transforming Lives through Partnership’ Award at the Education Awards 2023.

==> picture [235 x 224] intentionally omitted <==

Our highly inclusive ethos also led to us being named as winners of the national inclusion champion awards for 23/24 by the Inclusion Quality mark team.

==> picture [349 x 155] intentionally omitted <==

We are also Trinity Arts Award National Champion for 23/24, in recognition of our willingness and commitment to promote arts based projects across the community, both as leaders and participators in community partnerships.

We were also proud to be named runner up in the Most Inspirational Primary School Category at the Educate Awards 2023, presented at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in November 2023.

==> picture [165 x 96] intentionally omitted <==

As I write this I am saddened to think this will be my final parish report, as I leave St Peter’s in July 2024 to commence my retirement. It has been an absolute honour and privilege to serve this community and I hope my successor is given the same warm welcome and support that I have been given during my 18 years of service to the school.

Farnworth continues to be a wonderful community to be a part of. The continuation of the Farnworth Matters project, brining all primary schools across Farnworth together, to work collectively for the greater good of the community is an inspiration for all. It is a pleasure to serve a community with such supportive parents and Governors and such wonderful children. As we move in 2024 we look forward to developing more opportunities for collaboration across the parish and beyond. With God’s help we trust that this community can continue to build and develop, so that our children will benefit from a vibrant and aspirant community ethos.

Thank you

Lynn Williams, Co – Head teacher, St Peter’s

3[rd] Farnworth St John’s Brownies

2023 was a busy year for St. John’s Brownies. We began the year working towards Feelgood Stage 2 and Joanne Garner instructed us on Mindfulness.

In February we sadly said farewell to Betty Higham, former Guide Captain at St John’s Guides and who had been awarded an MBE for her lifelong devotion to Girlguiding. Her funeral very aptly was held on Thinking Day. We celebrated Thinking Day thinking about, Our World, Our Peaceful Future and Our Environment. We posed for St John’s Church Calendar 2024 representing February for Valentines Day and Thinking Day.

The Brownies attended Fired Paint a Pot Cafe and painted Trinket Boxes as gifts for Mothers Day.

In June, Snowy Owl, Nicola Smith and Sarah Baron took nine older girls to Waddow Hall for a day of Magic and Mayhem. We enjoyed lots of varying activities including circus skills, archery and cooking on an open fire. Its was a bitter sweet day as we knew that this was the last time we would be attended Waddow Hall before being sold by Girlguiding UK. At the time of writing this report fundraising is on going to raise sufficient funds for Waddow Hall Trust to purchase the Hall in April.

As many of the older girls were working towards their Gold Award they visited Guides and also each planned a Brownie Meeting. We had some very exciting meetings which included Easter Crafts, Coronation Evening, Games Night, a visit from a pair of kittens, Friendship, a Visit from a Policeman and one Brownie organised a Teddy Bears Picnic where she raffled a Brownie Bear in aid of St John’s Church.

It is always heart warming when former Brownies come back as Volunteers and we welcomed Lexi, Amelia and Lacey whilst doing their D of E Award.

We celebrated The Coronation by selling £1000 worth of Raffle Tickets for St John’s Church and by having a Coronation Party where we had stalls and raised over £600 again for Church.

In the Summer we held another large raffle in aid of St Johns Summer Fair, and we donated bottles for a Bottle Stall.

The Gold Award celebration party was held at McDonalds, Joanne Garner made us a beautiful Cake and we said goodbye to five girls as they moved up to Guides.

In September we welcomed new Brownies. We invited parents to talk about their Jobs and also invited a willing adult to assist with the use of tools to make a Robot.

Kallea McKee, a local 13 year old singer, came to our meeting to help us Brand a Band.

For Shop til you Drop, Pravin Patel local shop keeper provided us with provisions, each Brownie was challenged to buy as much as they could for £3.00. We then donated the food to St John’s Harvest for Farnworth Food Bank.

The Guides invited us to a Whizz, Fizz Bang Party and we all had an amazing time.

We celebrated Diwali by making Rangoli and Mehndi patterns and learned the story of Rama and Sita.

We held our third raffle of the year selling tickets to family and friends before St John’s Church Christmas Fair where we held a Bottle Stall, Christmas Stocking Stall and a Christmas Money Tree .

We sang at the Church Carol Service and filled money boxes for The Childrens Society Christingle. We have continued throughout the year to attend The All Age Service at which we are awarded our badges and achievements. A special thanks to Tom Donnely for making us a beautiful wooden Flag Holder to display our flags in Church, in memory of Betty Higham.

We enjoyed Sleeping Beauty Pantomime performed by Stagedoor Productions. We had a visit to Brownies from Fire Paint a Pot Cafe and we painted either a Father Christmas or a Snowman. The year ended with lots of Christmas Crafts and a visit from Santa.

I would like to thank you to all the Leaders and Parents for their continued support throughout the year.

Susan Stevens

St John’s Toddler Time

From January to June 2023 St John’s Toddler Time ran on Monday Mornings during term time with the help of volunteers, Stella and Chris Gee, Denise Entwistle and Becca Greig. The group continued to grow with an average of 25 children and their parents/carers attending on a weekly basis. The group continues to be distinctly Christian and uses elements of Wiggle Worship in each session with a story based on the Bible or a Christian value for each half term, these included Love, Noah’s Ark and the Easter Story.

It was amazing to see some of our regular children being baptised in the church, with Eddy and Maggy being baptised in April and Ava in May. These were very special occasions and the parents asked if ‘Wiggle’ could attend, the services were lovely and it was a privilege to be part of these.

==> picture [172 x 232] intentionally omitted <==

==> picture [210 x 225] intentionally omitted <==

Unfortunately, in June 2023 toddler time ceased to run due to the water ingress which occurred. Many parents have been asking if we will re-open and it is my hope that once the ceiling is fixed and the church is safe enough the toddler group will resume.

Café Church at St Peter’s

Café Church is a fresh expression of worship in the form of a monthly informal, café style service which runs in the Studio at St Peter’s Primary School Farnworth for all ages. Myself, Michelle Winter and Sharon Goodwin run the sessions with the parents/carers attending helping out with refreshments a member of school staff is present at each session too.

At the beginning of the year we started Café Church with approx. 25 people in attendance, over the course of the year this doubled and in December 2023 we had 52 people at the service.

Each session begins with families meeting together for a drink and toast for 20 minutes. During this time there are colouring activities, wordsearches and discussion questions on the tables for people to do or think about. We then begin our service which has a theme linked to a Bible story or Christian value, this year some of the ones we thought about were Fishers of Men, Noah’s Ark, King David, Psalm 103:13 “The Lord is like a Father to His Children”, Psalm 150:5 “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord”, Creation, Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine” and pumpkin prayers, Advent and Christmas.

These sessions explore the story in an interactive way so that the children and families can explore the story, verse or theme together and think about what it means for them. For example, when we thought about Psalm 150:6 “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord”, we all made musical instruments and praised God together during a worship song. Another example was in October when we thought about the verse “Let your light shine” from Matthew 5:16 we explored different things that give off light, and carved pumpkins to a prayer that the families could take home with them to read again.

Thank you to St Peter’s School for allowing us to run this fresh expression of worship in their studio and for their staff for supporting each month.

Income

Can you please differentiate between parish payments (collections etc) and Tax reclaims etc (this is so if Diocese did a spot check on books it will be apparent not all money comes into church form collections ect).

Expenditure

2 cheques (10635 & 10637) both for £62.80 payable to St James school only one receipt for this amount and 10637 not been cashed.

Chq no 1658 to Royal British Legion for £25.00 not cashed at year end.

Chq no 1662 for £98.82 not cashed till 3/1/24

Chq no 1666 for 93.10 not cashed

These 3 chqs should be on expenditure sheet and shown in Unpaid Chq section on Balance sheet.

If possible, can you please put chq no’s alongside payee (use another column in necessary, again this would assist Diocese if needed).

Nice to see NO payments made from Sunday collections.
