Chair’s Report 2023/24
It has been a very challenging season, but on the back of that a very exciting future awaits with the coming together of our club and OPM Hockey Club to develop and rebrand the club into the newly named Plymouth Lions Hockey Club. We are very excited at the prospect of what is to come for the club. At the heart of the new club is our commitment to promoting hockey in the community and creating a club that encourages a warm and welcoming social environment where players young and old can thrive, developing their hockey skills at the right level and within the right playing environment.
The new club comes off the back of the 2 clubs finding it hard to field teams every Saturday and so sustainability for each was an issue. Bringing the two clubs together will help to ensure that next season we are able to offer enjoyable hockey for all.
Player commitment continues to be a challenge in all sections of the club, with members being less regularly available or keen to totally dedicate themselves to hockey. A trend that has been seen nationally, not just at our club. The new club hopes to be able to offer flexibility in the membership packages to cater for all levels of commitment.
Senior teams have competed in the National and West leagues with a varying degree of success. The men’s 1st team were relegated from the West Conference National League but are looking forward to playing on a Saturday and linking in more with the rest of the club.
The men’s 2nd team managed to stay in their league after a late fight back with some great wins towards the end of the season. Unfortunately, the men’s 3rd teams were relegated following another difficult season but after 2 seasons playing at a level that for some, was a step too far, they will relish the opportunity to compete and enjoy their hockey!

The women’s section had a more successful season with all teams staying in their respective leagues, but not until a fight back by both 2s and 3s – the 3s leaving it until the last game to secure their league position. A top 4 finish for the Women’s 1s was our best for a while! Next season we hope to add a 5th team to support the transition and development of our youth players.
The senior teams have been coached by Matt Bell, Nick Clooke, Sanchia Bradford, Matt Puttock, Mike Timson, Nicky Widdecombe and other members stepping in when needed and the club is grateful to them all!
Games would not be possible without our team of umpires, who give of their time voluntarily to support the club. We could not manage without them! Please remember that!
Thanks go to Dave Barnard, Stephen Murphy, Nicky Milford-Widdecombe, Mike Timson, Liam Jonas, Sarah Harris, Daisy Murphy, Phil Mutlow, Steve Tew, and Lisa Bruckner Increasing our umpiring pool is essential if we are to continue to provide umpires for all games!
The introduction of SPOND to communicate with members has made a big difference to members and administrators of teams. Much easier to use than the website!
We have continued to promote hockey within the community and offer opportunities for members to enjoy an activity that enables a variety of ages, genders, and abilities to take part. We have again increased our junior membership, thanks largely to our links with a local Primary School with whom we have worked to provide hockey for children who would otherwise be unable to access. Our school’s membership means children of low-income families can access hockey for free, which has had a huge impact on both the club and the families of those involved. We have also been able to set up a small hardship fund thanks to a contribution from VIVO Defence Services which has helped to provide sticks, shin pads and club kit for some children.

A number of these children have been part of our U10 and U12 teams. We are very proud of the fact that our U10 and U12 Boys teams reached the regional finals in the In2 Hockey competition as County runners up and winners respectively. Both teams competed well at the finals. Thanks must go to the coaches and parents involved with both squads. Tom Bell, John Flippance, Alun Woodcock, Simon Fraser, Andy Hulbert, Ash Hough and John Aked have all played their part. The club is lucky to have a group of members who give of their time to support and develop young players ensuring they enjoy their hockey and keep coming back! Jo Clews, Mike Timson, Gareth Hayward and myself, alongside those above are there week in week out delivering safe and fun hockey sessions in a supportive environment.
Some of our youth players have also achieved individual success. Findlay Wyatt represents Scotland at U16 level. Ollie Houlberg, Rebecca Boyd and Sophie Lennard have represented Devon at U17 level. Maggie Haffenden, James Hulbert and Robyn Summers at U15 and Freda Jameson, Olivia Lennard and William Fraser at U14. Rueben Keeling has recently been selected for the West Panthers and Ella Short onto the Talent Academy after impressing whilst playing a league game for the Women’s 1st team. Huge congratulations to everyone.
Several of our youth players have again supported the club by helping with junior sessions as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. We have also begun to encourage youth members to take up umpiring and they have attended Friday Night Hockey evenings to umpire U10 and U12 matches. Encouraging our youth players to support the club in other ways is important in developing coaches, umpires, leaders and organisers of the future!
The Primary School Festival will run again in June with children from local schools taking part. Continuing to engage with the local school community is paramount in the club moving forward. The Paris Olympics provides an opportunity to kick start the new season and activities are being planned to encourage children to pick up a stick and have a go!

Master’s hockey continues to grow and as a club we have again been successful with our women’s O45s reaching the quarter finals of the EH Tier 1 cup and our O35s reaching the semi-finals of the Tier 2 cup.
A number of these women have represented the West at varying age groups. O50s – Bev Urbans, O55s Jackie Anning, Lynne Whitfield, and Paula Clough. Paula Clough went on to be selected for the England Women’s O55s team and is off New Zealand later in the year for the Masters World Cup.
On the men’s side Nick Clooke was selected for the West O50s, Matt Bell the O35s and Nick Carter the O60s.
As well as players, coaches and umpires the club needs someone to actively promote the club through social media platforms! It is essential we showcase the club at every opportunity and the efficiency of Laura Bale, who is responsible for this, is second to none!
Captains are important in the week to week managing of teams and are essential to the running of the club. A big thank you to Matt Puttock, Tara Chittenden, Sam Hewitt, Evan Cox, Mike Timson, Daisy Murphy, and Amelia Gledhill alongside the respective Club Captains who are the link between the players and the committee.
So finally, the committee! Again, a big thank you to Becky Hart, Evan Cox, Hannah Bagshaw-Bale, Nicky Milford-Widdecombe, Mel Hulbert, Mike Timson, Nick Clooke and Laura Bale.
A group of people who are responsible for the day to day running of the club and who ensure that all members are able to play hockey when they want to with transport to matches covered, pitch bookings made, umpires provided, teas and kit available, affiliations paid, insurance sorted, GMS system updated and managed, invoices paid promptly and finances managed, meetings attended at every level from club, through to the national governing body!

It’s a big-time commitment and they do so as volunteers alongside full time jobs and in some case young families! There is always room for more! No matter how small a job, every little helps as they say!
Please if you feel you can help in anyway, please let us know! The more people that are taking on small roles, the less we all have to do! There will be lots to do as the club moves forward as Plymouth Lions!
Changing times for the club and one which we are all looking forward to. Being part of the journey will be very exciting, I’m sure.
