Trustees Report – 2022/23
It seems like a long time since we have had a covid free season, although the impact will continue for years to
come, I’m sure!
As a club we have noticed that player commitment has changed, with members being less regularly available or keen to totally dedicate themselves to hockey! A change in at ude very much the order of the day. However, we have continued to promote hockey within the community and offer opportunities for members to enjoy an activity that enables a variety of ages, genders and abilities to take part. We have increased our junior numbers and our women players, but the men’s section has seen a decline. Although those that played
must be congratulated for their loyalty and support for the club when they too could have walked away. The desire to ensure we continued to fulfil the league commitments each week is tantamount to their loyalty to the club and to the sport of hockey.
As a club we were able to offer hockey to children from the age of 5 upwards and adults from the age of 18 upwards! Part of that included master’s hockey which starts at 40.
Master’s hockey is growing across the country and as a club we have been able to promote that and offer opportunities for those that want to play.
Our O45s Women’s Master team reached the semi final of the England Hockey Cup. A number of these women have represented the West at varying age groups.
O45s – Sam Hewitt, O50s – Bev Urbans, O55s Jackie Anning, Phil Davey, and Paula Clough along with myself at
O60. Jackie Anning went on to be selected for the England Women’s O55s team and recently played in the Home Nations Tournament in Glasgow. Ben Blundy has again been selected for the England Mens O35s.
Senior teams have competed in the National and West leagues with a varying degree of success. The men’s 1st
team were able to maintain National League status for next year with very much a season of two halves. Rory Coles continued as coach and manager up to Christmas and then Matt Puttock took over. Both must be thanked for their hard work and commitment to the squad and club. Matt also captained the side. The men’s 2nd and 3rd teams were relegated following a difficult season with player numbers impacting teams and appropriate standard of player. Evan Cox and Mike Timson must be congratulated for their hard work and support of the players within their squads. They were able to field a team each week and keep players motivated and enjoying their hockey as well as give opportunities for young players in a safe and supportive

The women’s section has had a more successful season with all teams staying in their respective leagues. The women’s 4th team in particular needs a mention. As a development side we were able to offer young players transition into senior hockey, playing alongside senior club players who were able to support and encourage them without the pressure of a league fixture. Becky Hart, Sam Hewitt, Nicky MilfordWiddecombe alongside myself worked together to ensure that the selection process was followed, and all teams fielded appropriate squads.
In addition to junior, senior and master’s hockey we have also started running Back to Hockey sessions. These are for anyone who wants a root into hockey without committing to playing matches and being a member of the club, although we hope for some it will! These might be people who have played before, but along time ago or people who have never played before! Some parents of our junior members have got the bug watching their children and so this is for them too!
The senior teams have been coached by Ash Hough, Nick Clooke, Sanchia Bradford Matt Puttock and, before Christmas, Rory Coles. Other members have stepped in when needed and the club is grateful to them all!
Games would not be possible without our team of umpires, who give of their time voluntarily to support the club. We could not manage without them! Please remember that! Thanks go to Chris Coles, Stephen Murphy, Nicky Milford-Widdecombe, Mike Timson, Alun Woodcock, Sarah Harris, Daisy Murphy, Phil Mutlow, Steve Tew, Sanchia Bradford, Lisa Bruckner and Rory Coles. Increasing our umpiring pool is essential if we are to continue to provide umpires for all games!
As well as coaches and umpires the club needs someone to actively promote the club through social media platforms! It is essential we showcase the club at every opportunity and the efficiency of Laura Bale, who is responsible for this, is second to none!
And finally, the committee! A big thank you to Becky Hart, Evan Cox, Nicky Fritz, Phil Mutlow, Nicky Milford Widdecombe, Mel Hulbert, and Colin Wood. A group of people who are responsible for the day to day running of the club and who ensure that all members are able to play hockey when they want to with transport to matches covered, pitch bookings made, umpires provided, teas and kit available, affiliations paid, insurance sorted, GMS system updated and managed, invoices paid promptly and finances managed, meetings attended at every level from club, through to the national governing body! It’s a big-time commitment and they do so as volunteers alongside full time jobs and in some case young families! There is always room for more! No matter how small a job, every little helps as they say! Please if you feel you can help in anyway, please let one of the committee know! You know where we are!

The end of season dinner and awards evening was a great success and saw members rewarded for their efforts both on and off the pitch. Our desire to ensure awards were sustainable was again well received. It is always a good way to end a season as it enables the club and members to reflect on the successes of the club
for the season, but also to look forward to the next one!
Ladies’ Report – 2022/23
It has been an interesting season with varying performances week on week which is mainly down to availability. From the 80+ players that are registered to play, we could field 5 teams, but with only 16 players having played more that 90% of matches and only 40% played 80% of matches it is clear that availability has been a clear issue every week. It is completely understandable that people have varying commitments including work, education, family events etc but it does make it incredibly difficult to have consistency in teams and can impact others. Not only are fringe players effected, it is difficult for coaches and captains for selection. Everyone was encouraged put omissions on website but this was not always used. If we continue with Clubbuzz or similar app, would encourage all to communicate as much as possible and try and prioritise Saturday hockey where you can.
Attendance at training varied, which was weather dependent at times. Thank you to Nick, Sanchia, Ash, Joe, Jackie and Matt for this year. We will be looking to have more of an overlap at training next season to reduce pitch hire costs.
Thanks to everyone who has umpired this season. It is clear from the West that there is a shortage of Appointed Umpires for Women's Matches which is being addressed at West level but I doubt will see much change for next season. Thank you to Steve M, Chris C, Steve T, Phil M, John A, Daisy, Jackie, Sanchia and everyone else who has picked up a whistle this year. If you are interested in having a go, please let me know.
A big thank you to Becky, Sam, Jackie, Sadie, Rivka and all the leadership teams within Teams for your duties on and off the pitch this year, it’s not always easy but everyone is incredibly grateful to you. Also, the teams behind the scenes - Laura and Nicky F, and the rest of my fellow committee members. Congratulations to everyone who has achieved representational honours this year at Devon, West and International level.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone that has played this year. Hockey is our hobby and I love seeing everyone
playing, having fun and being part of this amazing club that is made by the members. We have been very welcoming to new people too and have lots to look forward to next year.

Men’s Report – 2022/23
This season has been a real challenge for the men’s section of the club, with the impact of COVID - and the subsequent decline in numbers playing the game - really taking its toll. Despite beginning the season with the
intention of running 4 Men’s sides, the difficult decision to drop to 3 sides was taken just before the season got underway. Even fielding 3 sides each weekend proved challenging, especially with many players having to
play at a higher standard than would ordinarily have been the case given the impact of ‘dropping’ a side. Further complications were added with the departure of Rory Coles as Performance Coach at Christmas. Despite the challenges, the captains deserve huge credit for their tireless efforts to field sides each week and for remaining as committed and dedicated to the cause towards the end of the season as they were at the start and I would like to thank them publicly for all their efforts.
The Men’s 1st XI comfortably retained their National League status and will compete in Conference West for a 4th successive season next year. This is no mean feat considering the club has been a regular National League
‘yo-yo’ side in previous ventures into that division. Well done to Matt Puttock - and all others involved in leadership roles - for achieving such success.

very experienced opponents. Evan Cox - both as captain and all-round clubman - deserves an enormous thank
you for everything he did for both this team, and all the teams across the men’s section. The side will hope for
a better points return next season and a more settled and experienced side with which to challenge for honours.
The 3rd XI bore the brunt of many of the challenges outlined above, and a team which included some youngsters as well as some more ‘experienced’ individuals played with spirit and commitment despite being in a division where the going was tough for them. Mike Timson did a superb job of marshalling, encouraging and cajoling all involved and it is very much to his - and the team’s credit - that they completed the season and refused to give up despite some heavy defeats.
I would like to thank everyone who has played, coached, captained, umpired, volunteered or assisted the Men’s section this season. It has been challenging to say the least, but we approach 2023/2024 with optimism
that some of the experiences gained from this year will make us stronger in the season ahead. It is essential that we look to recruit more male members - in addition to more volunteers - if the club is to remain buoyant
into the future.
As I end my formal association with the Club - after 12 long and fulfilling seasons - I wish to apologise for not being around enough to offer much support to the captains and members this season, but also to wish everyone well as the new season draws near. I look forward to seeing you in action at some point next year.
Junior’s Report – 2022/23
For the first time the junior section was a focus for the club and therefore saw several initiatives developed to
offer hockey within the community.
Last year we accepted the chance to become a Talent Centre after recognition of the quality of our junior section offer. We then began the accreditation process. It became apparent that for us this was not appropriate and wasn’t going to enhance what we were already doing. We withdrew from the process part way through the season.
As a club we are about developing and offering hockey for all at grass roots level and not becoming a steppingstone for our national teams.

As part of what we have done in the past we have helped youngster with potential represent their country and hopefully will continue to do so because we provide hockey in a fun, safe and supportive environment. That won’t change because we aren’t a talent centre!
We introduced the school’s membership as a pilot. In consultation with a local primary school, we agreed that
for a very reduced fee of £1000 we could offer 15 children membership to the club. The fee was paid by the school though its Sports Premium, so the children could access hockey for free. The children involved came from disadvantaged families who wouldn’t otherwise have been able to access sport. The consequence of this
was an increase in numbers for the club, and for the children an introduction to hockey! We found that because of this sibling of these children joined too! We are able to provide sticks, shin pads and other spare kit which in turn reduces any barriers to children and so enable anyone that wants to play the opportunity to do so.
These children will remain next season and the school will offer another group of children access to the club. The children that were part of the scheme will be offered reduced fees where there is a hardship case so membership for them can continue.
The Primary School Festival ran again but for the first time under the banner of the club. 23 teams took part and those that took part experienced a fantastic day of hockey in glorious sunshine!
Following on from the festival the club is running a development centre for selected young players who it was felt showed an interest or aptitude for hockey. We hope that through this some of them will then join the club
for next season.
Junior players took part on local festivals, County, regional and national competitions allowing all members to
take part in matches whatever level was appropriate. Teams ran for U8s, U10s, U12s and U14s with U16 girls playing in the National Competition. Our U10 boys reached the regional finals of the In2Hockey competition, no mean feat!
As always youth members were encouraged to support with coaching and working alongside managers at matches and festivals. Some regularly supported coaches at junior sessions and others took part in the Primary School Festival as volunteers. A number of our young players did this as part of the Duke of Edinburgh
awards scheme which we are proud to support.

Junior coaches and assistants have done an exceptional job, engaging young children with fun sessions in a very safe and supportive environment. For the first time we provided kit for the coaches which included an warm, waterproof jacket, a mid-layer top and t-shirt to cover all weather conditions! These made the coaches
more easily identifiable to parents and children so that they could see who to go to or approach if needed.
Making up the team alongside myself and Ash Hough as leads were Mike Timson, Tom Bell, Simon Fraser, Jo Clews, Alun woodcock, John Flippance, Gareth Hayward, Mark Woock, John Clark, Claudia Dean, and Daisy Murphy. They have all been fully committed and made sure that their teams were communicated with about
all training and matches on offer. The introduction of the SPOND app for this has made life a lot easier for everybody! The feedback from parents has also been very positive.
Our end of season awards session enabled all children and their families be part of an evening of hockey where everyone was welcome and encouraged to join in! The atmosphere was amazing and a fitting end to a very successful season.
We are already planning for next season, and we hope to continue increasing our numbers and offer access to hockey for all those that want it.
