Club Report 2019/20 Season

Chairman’s address:

An unprecedented season ended very abruptly with the lockdown due to Covid 19. The league was unfinished and uncertainty around what would happen in terms of league positions and promotion/relegation left us wondering if the achievement of the Men’s 1[st] team in convincingly winning their league would see them playing National League next season.

Thankfully, the league decision to calculate league positions using a points won percentage left us in no doubt – a percentage of 97% was unchallenged! A long overdue return to the National League will be a real boost for the club and the city. We can only hope that hockey will go ahead as planned and we can all enjoy supporting the team for home games on Sundays.

With the highs come the lows and 2 teams were relegated – both Men’s and Ladies 4[th] teams will play in a lower league next season, but we hope they will rise to the challenge and enjoy the level of hockey this presents.

For various reasons this season has been quite a difficult one – the departure of Jamie Oxley left the club without an onsite link to the University of Marjons, and a driving force to keep the club moving forward. No one else has the time or energy to commit the hours that he did which has meant at times things have been difficult to manage.

If we area to maintain the club at the level it has got to we need more people doing little things rather than one person doing lots!

Teas have been an issue and losing the running of the DT has impacted on income and quality of teas. We are working with Marjons to ensure this improves next season and if this isn’t possible we will be looking elsewhere.

Kit has also been disorganised and a challenge to manage – things improved throughout the season, but this is still not an ideal set up. A new senior kit manager with new ideas should make things more efficient.

Lots of people need thanking for their hard work and support in helping manage the club – I hope I don’t miss anyone out!

Hannah Bagshaw-Bale, Joe Downton, Laura Bale, Nicky Fritz, Mel Hulbert, Kieran Davey, Ash Hough, Matt Puttock, Charlotte Scott, Phil Mutlow, Nick Clook, Sam Hewitt, Daisy Murphy, Hannah Bladon, Paula Clough, Chris Pitt, Ollie Reid, Mark Wook, Sanchia Bradford, Matt Butt, Rory Coles, Molly Hunt, Rhiannah Long, Ben Longworth, Mark Taylor, Mike Timson, Stephen Murphy, Sarah Harris, Chris Coles, Anne-Marie Cooper, Jamie Cooper, Rich Davey, Jan Graham, Lisa Bruckner, Clive O’Sullivan.

A number of parents supported the junior and youth section managing teams and coordinating Friday night and Sunday fixtures. A very important group of people!

The club recognises that it is important that parents, players, coaches and managers adhere to the club ethos and follow the England Hockey code of ethics and behaviour policy adopted by the club.

Kieran Davey worked hard with PGSOBs to ensure that we met the criteria for our club umpiring status and hopefully moved us back to an “A” club! A job well done!

Dinah Russell has managed the club accounts for the past 6 seasons, the most important and time consuming of roles! We cannot thank her enough for all that she has done in difficult circumstances especially when a back injury impacted on her ability to spend time at a laptop. She will be a great loss to the club and we hope someone will step in to carry out the role – we cannot operate without a treasurer!

The trustees continue to work hard in the background and meet monthly to review finances and club development. This has been difficult with the club finances being stretched to the limits in order to meet the ever increasing demands of running the club effectively. The trustees have committed to being less ambitious next season and only budgeting using known income, and not income that includes fund raising and sponsorship which may or may not materialise.

Things will be difficult next season as there are so many unknowns – when will we able to access the pitch, when will the league start, what increase in costing will be in place due to Covid19, how many members will we retain and what social events will be able to run?

Not having our Annual Awards Dinner to celebrate the season was disappointing, but announcing the winners virtually at least allowed us to recognise the winners. Hopefully, we can present their awards soon!

The use of social media to promote the club has improved this season and member’s involvement in the activities during Covid19 has been positive.

All that remains is to hope that the situation we are in continues to improve and although I am sure the impact of this will be long lasting, that hockey will bring us all back together fit and healthy and with renewed enthusiasm!

Men’s Section:

As with every season, the 2019-2020 season has been one of a fair few highs and the occasional low at Plymouth Marjon Hockey Club. It would only be right to start with the positives, and the promotion of the men’s 1st XI brings National League hockey back to the city for the first time in a decade. This is a significant step forward for the club, and something they have been striving to achieve for many years, coming close on many occasions. Many of these players in that side are local, and have progressed through the clubs development system, or returned to the city from some time away at University.

At the same time, the clubs 4th XI have been relegated, having found themselves up against some tough competition and fielding a constantly changing side. However, many of the clubs current youth players have been given opportunities and exposure in this side throughout the season, which should serve both them and the club well in the future seasons.

The remaining three club sides all finished in mid table finishes, picking up good results along the way, fielding players as young as 13 to 55, across a wide span of backgrounds.

The future of the club looks bright, and a continued emphasis remains on the importance of ensuring the clubs youth set up supports the senior sides, to create a fully cohesive club.

Joe Downton - Men’s Club captain

Ladies Section:

At the beginning of the season the ladies section made the difficult decision to withdraw the 5[th] team from the league after concerns for being able to put out 5 squads without struggling every Friday night!

For the first time ever the ladies 1[st] team had a coach and manager that was able to attend all games with them. Being there on a Saturday for home and away games meant a more focussed training session and better management of substitutions and match day tactics. A number of young players were given the opportunity to play starting with one in her first season of senior hockey. A good mix of youth and experience saw a very supportive and social team. The season ended very abruptly with 2 games left to play and the final league positions were created using points win percentage. The ladies 1[st] team finished 7[th] . The ladies 2[nd] continue to challenge for promotion despite an ever changing team with players moving up and down and work commitments leading to difficulties with availability. A very creditable 3[rd] place was achieved.

The ladies 3s were on course to finish at the top of their league but a defeat to the eventual winners left them coming up just short. They eventually finished runners up, which is the highest league position achieved by this team.

The ladies 4[th] team ended up being relegated after a tough season in Petroc 1, the equivalent league to the 3[rd] team. It has to be remembered that they ended up in this league after the league restructure where previously they were 3[rd] in the league below. They must be commended for their determination and positive attitude – a young side which due to the availability of players in the teams above and the school commitments of others in the team meant an unsettled side. Next season should see a more appropriate level for this development side.

The ladies 3s/4s benefitted from the coaching of Simon Fenwick. Once the sessions were more inclusive involving both squads together for longer parts of the session and a game at the end with each squad having a different focus meant that everyone felt the sessions were worthwhile.

Training on separate nights has proved a challenge with selection and players being able to move between teams. Hopefully next season this can be addressed.

Teas have been disappointing and at times badly organised and therefore embarrassing as this reflects the hospitality offered by the club. Hopefully this will improve next season. The youth players continue to be supported and offered opportunities within the senior teams, however, more role models supporting with youth age group coaching would be beneficial.
