HAPPY KIDS

## CHAIR’S STATEMENT

Joining the pottery class at Happy Kids I had an epiphany. Sitting amongst our eager children I sensed a calm, a purpose. I watched Bella emphatically manipulating the flexible and compliant clay giving her the sense of control she so craved. Here no one knew about her failures at school, her teasing neighbour or her disabled, agitating brother. Here she was able, successful even. As Bella contemplated the endless options for her porcelain bowl her despondent attitude transformed. Today, anything is possible.

It set me thinking. Children really are like soft clay. You can lovingly mould them into beautiful vessels, glaze them with vibrant colours and fill them with skills, knowledge, and ambitions. For our beneficiaries though, poverty, illness, disabilities, social struggles, emotional challenges, and other unfortunate circumstances apply pressure that flaws their beauty, sometimes leaving them with little form or structure. Then the clay hardens, and there’s little hope for change.

In contrast, the atmosphere at the session gives messages of courage and strength. Every piece is different. Each has its own story to tell. Imperfection is beauty. Even a broken vessel will be fixed using gold as the adhesive. Then it becomes more precious than it was before it was broken. Life’s blemishes need not mould us. We fear not the kiln that makes us firm, unyielding. For we have the power, the resilience, the belief that we can become that which we aspire.

Every pot that is crafted requires hands to be stained. I credit my fellow trustees and our incredible staff for modelling perseverance and flexibility. For leaving no stone unturned in their desire to carve bright beginnings.

On behalf of the children, their families and the staff, I thank our dependable donors and funders. In spite of the challenging times your faith in us is etched in stone. About you it is said: a field of clay touched by the genius of man becomes a castle.

I take pride in presenting our annual report and financial statements for the year ending 31 March 2022.

Thank you for joining us as we continue shaping the future, one child at a time.

Mrs Chaya Bleichfeld Chair

## FINANCIAL REVIEW

We are gratified to report that a steady income enabled us to deliver crucial services to an increased number of beneficiaries. A range of funding streams, including grants from trusts and foundations, (some specifically crisis funding), as well as a number of corporate donations, supported our activities. Thank you to London Borough of Hackney - Community Partnerships, Masonic Charitable Foundation, Tottenham Grammar School Foundation, The National Lottery Fund, BBC Children in Need, Charles S French Charitable Trust, The John R Murray Charitable Trust, The Invesco Cares Foundation, Cash For Kids, and the many others for their confidence in our work. The trustees are satisfied with results for the year shown in the attached financial statements.

## RESERVES POLICY

The trustees are grateful to have been able to rebuild the reserves level in line with the charity’s policy. At the year’s end the charity held £40,132; just over 3 months’ worth of running costs. The trustees are therefore confident of the charity’s sustainability.

## PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Targets for 2022/23

As we enter our sixteenth year of provision, we finally exit one crisis to be confronted by another. Yet even with financial uncertainty the current backdrop of our lives, we know with certainty that we will extend ourselves once again to support our needy beneficiaries.

Although some children will have sufficient resilience and support to cope with life’s inevitable challenges, others will struggle to find the wherewithal to manage on their own. Furthermore, many are presented with disproportionate difficulties that will leave them struggling whether academically, emotionally, psychologically or even socially. In addition to increasing our academic, recreative, therapeutic and material support, we will introduce resilience clubs where children will explore many possible scenarios and the appropriate responses they could employ. This will ensure their emotional wellbeing whatever the circumstances.

Looking ahead, we know that there will be an increased and evolving need for our services. We also realise that securing funding will be challenging in the year ahead. Although some of our past funders are unable to come through now, we anticipate that the generosity of public and private streams will continue to be the conduits for our future activities. The trustees are therefore confident that the organisation is in a position to continue engaging children in visionary and futuristic activities that will transform their lives and their futures.

This is our calling and we feel privileged to answer.

The trustees’ report was approved by the Board of Trustees on 24 January 2023 and signed on their behalf by:

Mrs C Bleichfeld Chair

## INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Happy Kids (the charity) for the year ended 31 March 2022.

## RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIS OF REPORT

As the trustees of the charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

## INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT

Your attention is drawn to the fact that the charity has prepared financial statements in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) in preference to the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice issued on 1 April 2005 which is referred to in the extant regulations but has now been withdrawn.

I understand that this has been done in order for financial statements to provide a true and fair view in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practice effective for reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2015.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

- 1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or

- 2 the financial statements do not accord with those records; or

- 3 the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

## NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2022

## 1 Accounting policies

## Charity information

The charity is registered in England and Wales and is unincorporated. The address of the principal office is 26 Oldhill Street, London, N16 6LB.

## 1.1 Accounting convention

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)” (as amended for accounting periods commencing from 1 January 2016). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities applying FRS 102 Update Bulletin 1 not to prepare a Statement of Cash Flows.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include the revaluation of freehold properties and to include investment properties and certain financial instruments at fair value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

## 1.2 Going concern

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus, the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

## 1.3 Charitable funds

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

## 1.4 Incoming resources

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.

Page | 13

HAPPY KIDS

## NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2022

## 1.5 Resources expended

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Grants payable are charged in the year when the offer is made except in those cases where the offer is conditional, such grants being recognised as expenditure when the conditions attaching are fulfilled. Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year-end are noted as a commitment, but not accrued as expenditure.

## 1.6 Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.

## 1.7 Financial instruments

The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 ‘Basic Financial Instruments’ and Section 12 ‘Other Financial Instruments Issues’ of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.

Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.

## Basic financial assets

Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.

## Basic financial liabilities

Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised. Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.

Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

## Derecognition of financial liabilities

Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.
