ALAMÍRE Charitable Trust

Patrons: Patricia Brown, Christopher Page, Sandra Dawson and the Duke of Norfolk

ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23

Charity: ALAMIRE Registration number: 1131843 Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge CB2 3HU Trustees: Mr Richard Humphreys (Chairman), Dr Edward Wilson-Lee (secretary). Treasurer: Stephen Sherman

STRUCTURE

Alamire Charitable Trust is currently structured with two Trustees (one acting as secretary) and a Treasurer who monitor and advise the use of funds for projects undertaken by the professional chamber choir ‘Alamire’, under the artistic direction of Dr David Skinner.

ACTIVITIES & OBJECTIVES

One of the leading vocal consorts in the UK, Alamire has an enviable line-up of some of the finest consort singers under the directorship of Dr David Skinner. The ensemble has enjoyed unanimous critical acclaim for their recordings on the Obsidian label, including a Gramophone Award (and several nominations), Limelight Choral & Song CD of the Year (Australia), and a BBC Music Award nomination (Choral Category). Alamire’s activities include concerts, educational work, radio and television documentaries, and commercial recordings.

ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE

Reviews and accolades continue to be published concerning our 4-CD survey of William Byrd's early song collections (1588 and 1589) released earlier in 2022 and 2023. Both were picked as the top suggestion for Radio 3's 'Building a Library', and, as of writing this report, the latter is rumoured to be short-listed for a number of specialist awards in 2024. Concert highlights include Alamire joining forces with with the Continental ensemble Cappella Pratensis in a programme of music commemorating the Field of the Cloth of Gold, where the choirs of Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France competed against one another. Our Anne Boleyn project was revived for a music and spoken word concert at St Martin’s Music in London, with actors playing Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn who read love letters to one another as well as Anne’s laments from the Tower of London before execution. Alamire was also invited to run a week of choral workshops for multi-national students in Avila, culminating in a concert in Las Navas.

PUBLIC BENEFIT

All of our activities have helped increase public awareness of the history of English and European musical culture (a very rare and precious tradition that is as old as the great cathedrals). Dr Skinner and the ensemble have also brought to the public several examples of less well known music from the 15th and 16th centuries, which is now available on CD and all streaming platform, as well as in the form of television documentaries and published articles.

INCOME FOR PROJECTS

In early 2023 a principal donor agreed to support our next project which will prove to be the most ambitious thus far, and marking the end of our recorded tributes to the William Byrd 400th anniversary celebrations: The Great Service and Anthems, with His Majesty’s Sagbutts & Cornetts. The album is due for release in September 2024. No project is started until full funding for it has already been secured.
