Sandal Magna Activities Report 2024
Vicar's Report by Revd. Hannah Smith
We began 2024 speaking of three words- home,
hope and hands:
- God is our home and we welcome others to him.
God is our hope in a world that desperately needs
to see hope.
We are God's hands and feet, showing his love in
our world.
1 see us growing into these words as a parish as we
continue to seek God's kingdom together- by
paying attention to what God is doing around us
and among us- and by getting involved.
This year has been a busy one in the life of the Parish. January saw Phil Asquith join our
Staff team, working for the Every Good Work project, serving with the Cross Project in
local schools and starting Hot Chocolate and Game Changers youth groups at Portobello
and in the Spring.
The Spring Team and Directors gathered early this year to talk about the vision and future
of the Spring and conversations began on how we might make the front of the building
more welcoming- a work still in progressl
We ran an Alpha course in the Spring in early 2024 where we saw around 30 people
gather to explore faith more deeply which was wonderful.
We have continued to work c105ely with our Church School Sandal Castle, enabling them
to launch their new vision by hosting PopUK in school and in church. PopUK are a
Christian music charity who taught all the children some excellent songs, some of which
you will have heard as part of our 11am services at St. Helen's and that we use in
Collective Worship in school. Our Parish also gave every year 6 child in Sandal Castle and
Walton Primary an It's Your Move booklet, which gives resources helping children move
from year 6 into secondary school in year 7. Phil had the opportunity to run sessions in
both schools speaking about how our faith can help us in that journey.

Vicar's Report by Revd. Hannah Smith continued
We welcomed Lizzy Brothwood as our curate as she was ordained in June 2024 and we
had a lovely party to welcome her with a wonderful cake made by Linda (which l almost
dropped!). It's great having Lizzy in the parish and we look forward to her 'priesting' in
June 2025.
We have continued to love the community of Portobello as Sarah and Laura and
wonderful volunteers run Make Lunch each school holiday, feeding families who may be
struggling and also running an excellent weekly Toddler Group. November saw a
wonderful Light Night Party at the Portobello Community Centre which was full to
bursting and full of life and energy.
This year saw our first Volunteers Supper at the Spring - thanking key volunteers who
lead areas of church life and give so much time and energy to make things run.
There have also been some sadnesses this year as we have lost a few key members of
our congregations- with the funerals of Judith Parkin,1sabelle North, Trevor Parkin and
Brian Maw, among others.
We also said a sad farewell to the lovely Orr family as they moved to Scotland later in the
year. Ecumenically we said goodbye to Rob Cotton, our local Methodist Minister and
welcome Julian Pursehouse who is now serving the local circuit.
Financially, it has been a challenging year, with energy prices continuing to rise and we
are very aware of the costs of heating all our spaces, but we have been touched by the
generosity of all those who give regularly- thank you so much.
During 2024 we had a preaching series on the Five Marks of Mission and we thought
about the various ways that we see the kingdom of God growing in our world - including
people following Jesus, becoming disciples, being baptized, and also serving the poor,
standing up for justice and looking after our planet.
Therefore, it's been great to remember how many of those we already do in our parish
and it is encouraging this year to see our eco-group start meeting and looking towards
how we as a parish take part in the stewardship of God's creation.

Vicar's Report by Revd. Hannah Smith continued
Our year ended with a fantastic Christmas- we welcomed lots of people from around
the parish and community to our special service5- including a bumper Christingle at
St. Helen's where there wasn't a free seat in the house. We also introduced Carols
and Cake at the Spring which felt like the start of somethin8...1
l arn so grateful to be the Vicar of this parish and for every person who thinks of St.
Paul's, St. Helen's, the Spring or PCF as their home. My prayer is that we will all grow
in hope as we move forwards and that we will each
find the ways in which we are called to serve God
together in this place.
With love and prayers,
Hannah
Report from St Paul's Walton
Another year has passed in the life of St Paul's and
as we continue to serve our Lord, each other, and
the community, I feel that there is a very strong
spirit of teamwork. Very many members of the
congregation and faithful friends contribute in so
many ways to the life of the church, so the work of
the Holy Spirit can be seen in the community and in the village.
Special mentions to the gardening team, Andy {Mr Fixit) Owen who keeps the church
clean and beautiful, those who serve refreshments after services, welcomers, readers,
intercessors, service leaders, preachers and those who lead us in beautiful music. We
do miss our musician Ali, but a few of us have now mastered the iPad, so with Andy's
help we don't sing unaccompanied! We are able to continue to have two communion
services each month, thanks to Hannah and Bishop Tom.
A major highlight of the year was when we welcomed our new curate Lizzy Brothwood
to the parish, with a joint service at St Paul's, and then enjoyed lots of food and
fellowship. We also hosted two village choir events, school Christmas services, as well
as a Christingle service. We continue our strong links with Walton Methodists, with
shared services at Harvest and Remembrance. The Barnabas room continues to be
well used both for regular church and community events, and private meetings and
occasional partie5. God continues His work in Walton !

Annual Report: Stewardshlp of Church Bulldlngs and Land
Heartfelt thanks are extended to everyone who has dedicated their time and financial
5UPPOrt to managing our church properties over the past year. Your commitment is
fundamental to our mission and deeply appreciated.
A major focus for our wider church community is addressing the Church of England's
call, issued by the General Synod in February 2020, to achieve Net Zero carbon
emissions by 2030. Meeting this target for our extensive estate requires developing a
long-term plan to move away from fossil fuels towards sustsinable energy sources.
Successfully implementing this transition will demand significant fundraising efforts
and administrative support in the coming years to navigate planning processes and
meet faculty requirements. We warmly invite anyone with relevant skills, ideas for this
Net Zero initiative, or suggestions for enhancing our buildings for ministry, to connect
with any Strategic Building Support (SBS) team members: myself, Dom, Mark, and
Andy. Your input is valued.
Special recognition goe5 to Abby for her leadership in
advancing our participation in the Eco Church awards
program. Through the dedicated efforts of the Eco Church
team - comprising Margaret, Cathy, Graham, Jackie,
Sarah, Mark, Barbara, and myself - St Helens has
successfully achieved the Bronze Award this past year.
We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment and
remain committed to this important initiative, with the
aspiration of ultimately achieving the Gold award standard
across all our church buildings.

Churchyard Report
The team of Allan Crossman, Nigel Brook, Mark Buckley, Julian Finn, Julian Gill,
Gill Heap, John Hepworth, Alex Hull, Helen Lawrence and (when fit) Les Wilson,
have been joined by Yvonne Ray and Eddy Brook who has joined us during his gap
Year before going to university. They have continued to attend on a Wednesday
morning.
As usual the team chose a "Christmas Tree" from Woolley Edge Christmas Tree
Farm and dressed it in Advent.
The team undertook the regular work, including cutting back the various hedges,
as well as removal of fallen branches and leaves and clearing up after storm
damage to the beech tree at the back of the church, as well. as looking after The
Tree of Life, 16 War Graves and the Pilkington fenced area. Julian Finn has
repaired a part of the wall to Sandal Hall Mews that had collapsed. As a result,
the Churchyard now looks tidy.
Many thanks to those parishioners
who have commented positively on
our work, it is much appreciated. We
were able to purchase and get
installed a prefabricated storage
shed placed in the area to the rear of
the church near the cellar so we can
have easier access to the heavy
mowing machines previously stored
in the rear of the vicarage.
The snowdrops and daffodils have
been glorious again this year. The
primulas are now in flower and we
await the flowering of the bluebells.

Eco-church
As some of you may be aware, Margaret Walker and myself formed an 'Eco Church,
group back in October last year. This is a movement set up by charity 'A Rocha, to help
churches think proactively about how we can better care for God's earth and
encourage others to do the same.
Churches are invited to fill out a survey of five areas - Worship, Lifestyle, Buildings,
Land and Community Engagement. Each section contains questions exploring how
environmentally friendly our buildings and pastoral practices are, and what steps we
are taking to encourage each other and our local community to improve.
Based on our answers we are then awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold, which we can use
to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our world, and also may give us the
opportunity to apply for funding or resources to help us improve our church's
environmental impact even more in the future.
Thanks to the hard work of our group we have now earned a Bronze for St Helen's, and
next we plan to fill out an application for St Paul's. Ultimately we hope to survey each
of our church buildings in turn, including the Spring Cafe, and once we have done this
we can start to See what the next Steps are for Silver or Gold.
Regardless of what awards we may or may not achieve, the survey provides us with a
framework to reflect. We believe that God asks us to be stewards of His creation,
preserving it for the future and also caring for all His living things.
l am excited for how we can better use our land and buildings
out to our local community and collaborate to care for
Earth. Practical examples of this include providing
spaces for wildlife to flourish, encouraging
sustainable eating practices, investing our money
in green businesses and mending, repairing and
swapping our clothes and possessions.

In silence, Contemplative Prayer Report
Our group continues to meet every month - except August- in St. Paul's Walton.
There are approximately 8 regular pray-ers. Any
one is welcome to come even if it is impossible to
commit regularly. There is no pressure to pray out
loud - in fact the whole purpose is to be silent
before God & listen to what He is saying to you
through the word being contemplated on the day
& often it is after the day when you hear Him.
Very often it is just lovely to rest & relax in the
silence & be aware of God's presence. He enjoys
YOUR company & in the company of a close loving
friend or Father no words are necessary.
Come & See Jn I v 39. In silence, rest & trust is
your strength & salvation. Is 30 v 15
We aim to meet & stsrt promptly at 2pm so that the silence is not broken by late
comers. The session finishes at 3pm followed by tea/coffee, cake if possible & chat.

St. Helen's Women's Fellowship
This small, and informal group continue to meet on the first Monday
of the month (loam to 12.00 midday) in the Emmaus Rooms at the rear of the church
for Fellowship & Fun, often with a Speaker and always with time for a chat and catch up
with friends over a cuppa & cakel
We have now been up & running for over 75 years, starting in 1949 as 'Sandal Young
Members, (a junior branch of the Mothers Union)
Topics discussed in the 1950's & 1960's had a
similar tone to the issues we have today and
sadly we don't seem to have progressed with
solving the problems of poverty or hardships
of any sort since. But now our speakers are
using a variety technical aids (like Power
Point) to aid their presentations, whereas in
1952 meetings were illustrated with lantern
slidesl How many of you remember thesePI
We have enjoyed a variety of speakers at our
meetings, including learning (on the 1st
Anniversary of the Coronation of King Charles
& Queen Camilla) about all the Kings called
Charle5 who came before our current
monarch (as well as our present King) from
one of our members, Val Williamson.
This last
year, our main fundraising efforts were for the
Children's Air Ambulance in addition to also making
smaller donations to a few smaller & more local
charities.
We continue to try & support our church flower
arrangers in creating a small display in the church
entrance at Harvest time, (the produce then being
distributed within our Parish & community), help
with the Christmas church decorations & with the
Mothering Sunday daffodil posies.
So, don't sit at home alone, If you are not sure if
this is the right group for you or not, why not come
along and see for yourself? You'll be sure of a warm
welcome and we'd be very happy to see you.

17th March Sadly, numbers attending meetings have dropped to single numbers. With
great regret it was decided that we could not function any longer. Therefore, a decision
was made to start the process to close the Branch. Most of our members opted to
become Diocesan members, some have decided to end their membership and one will
move to another branch. The process of closure will take 6 months.
In addition to our monthly meeting some of our members attend the Cathedral for
midday prayers on the first Friday of each month, taking our turn in leading the prayers.
Midday prayers are sent out by email or by printed sheet to branch members enabling
each one of us to take part daily.
Pat Schofield is the Diocesan Area members rep and Teddy Foster was the MU
Enterprises Rep for the Wakefield Episcopal area, but retired from the role in December.
Throughout the year our faithful members have given their time and monetsry
donations to support our charitable work in the Branch, UK and Northern Ireland,
Overseas, for AFIA, Summer of hope appeal, Hospital Toiletry bags, and lots of knitting

Choir and Organist Report
St. Helen's Church Choir
The Choir at the Traditional Carol Service held on Sunday 15th December 2024, with
the Vicar the Rev'd. Hannah Smith and the Curate, the Rev'd. Lizzy Brothwood.
It is a privilege for the members of the choir to lead the congregation in worship, for
Morning Prayer, the Service of Holy Communion and on Special Occasions.
We continue to increase the range of Introits sung at the beginning of each service
and balance the choice of new hymns and new words to well-known tunes, along
with old favourites from the Ancient and Modern hymn book.
Hymns are chosen to reflect the theme of the Service, the season of the church year
or the readings. Having said that, we always welcome suggestions from members of
the congregation which they feel would enhance the service. (Or putting it another
way- their favourite hymns, but we cannot sing 'Onward Christian Soldiers, every
Sundayl)
In passing, we are always looking for new members for the choir. The ability to read
music is desirable, particularly for those singing alto, tenor or the bass parts. Choir
practices are held on Thursdays before the second and fourth Sundays of each
month. Please contact me if you are interested.
Finally, on both your and my behalf, I record thanks to the faithful members of our
choir. We are all encouraged by your commitment.

Bellringers Report
How many of our congregation (or community) know about the ringing of o&r church
bells, the skill and art of 'change ringing'P
'Change ringing, is a technique that involves ringing a set of tuned bells in a precise
sequence - that sequence of bell strikes is called a 'change'. The origins of this are
thought to lie in the late sixteenth century when church bells began to be hung with a
full wheel, giving ringers control of their bell, allowing sets of be115 to be rung in a
continuously changing pattern and so creating a form of 'bell music, and a series of
mathematical sequences. You just need to be able to countl (concentrate and keep
countingl)
Bell ringing is a team activity, stimulating the brain and helps to keep you fit- not only
in the technique and physical action required of pulling the ropes to control your bell
but also in climbing the 42 steps up the towerl Here at St. Helen's, our largest (and
heaviest) bell (tenor) weighs in at 13cwt and the smallest (and lightest) bell (treble)
weighs just 5cwt 2qtrs 221b (That's 660kg- tenor bell, down to 289.4kg- treble bell)
Our team of ringers do our best to make a joyous sound 'calling' you to services held
at St. Helen's Church, for weddings or to celebrate special occasions. It takes time and
commitment to learn any skill, but we would love to hear from you and we need your
help to keep this traditional craft alive. Age is no barrier (almostl). Our team ages range
from 9 to 86 yearsl
Can you spare your
Wednesday evening for
practice night and
Sunday mornings for
service ringing and so
contribute to the service
of your church and
community?

Report on Music at the 11am Service
The 11am worship is an ever changing and evolving service with a range of musicians
bringing their gifts to lead our worship. A real highlight of this ministry was Christmas,
and particularly the contemporary Carols by Candlelight service. Many of our 11am
musicians played at that service, forming a larger than normal music group (giving us
an answer to the question 'how many musicians can you fit in the chancel?,) and
developing our own arrangements of some well-known carols.
We are blessed to have so many very talented worship group members who give their
time so generously to lead us in worship. Many thanks to the following excellent
people for their help and input to thi5 group: Hannah Smith, Abby Stanley-jones, Andy
and Rachel Chapman, Andy Owen, Dom Tuck, Jonathan and Solomon Woodcock, Joss
Thorndike, Linda Asquith, Luke Seymour, Mark Taylor-Thomas, and Nat Jackson. On top
of this, we're looking forward to being joined in the coming months by some young
people who want to sin8 and play with us at the front. some already dol
We have also introduced a new software for our service. This software, called Proclaim,
is a presentation software specifically designed for worship which is making the job of
putting the service together a lot simpler and quicker, as well as looking great on the
projector screens.
Looking towards the future, while we are lucky to have some good equipment, such as
the piano, bass amp and mixing desk, but the main PA system is overdue for an
overhaul. We're currently in the process of exploring what PA system will serve us well
in the coming years. We are also looking at recording sermons and making them
available on our website and offering streaming and recording services for funerals.
Another area we are exploring is how to improve our visual resources during the 11am
service, and one option being
explored is replacing the projectors
with TV screens rather than
projection screens. The TV screens
would be brighter, a little bit larger
viewing area and look neater. As
with all things, budget is always a
concern, so these are very much
long-term plans and will take much
work, prayer and consideration.

Sandal Magna Parochial Church Council (PCC) Report "A>
A Parochial Church Council (PCC) is the
executive committee of a Church of
England parish and consists of clergy and
churchwardens of the parish, together
with representatives of the laity. It is
responsible for the financial affairs of the
church parish and the maintenance of its
assets, such as churches and church halls.
It also assists the clergy in the
management of church affairs in the
parish, promoting the mission of the
church. Your PCC has been diligent
throughout the year in fulfilling this role.
Your PCC met on six occasions during the
year 2024. The APCM was held on 22nd
May 2024. All meetings began prayerfully
with a biblical reflection and concluded
with the saying of The Grace. Reverend
Hannah managed and chaired each meeting leading the PCC to consider issues related
to the mission and management of the Church. This year we had a particularly strong
focus on safeguarding both ensuring we are compliant but also rigorous in our
approach to this important area of Church life. The treasurer led us in considering the
budget and proposed financial decisions for the church.
There are 19 members of your PCC who work hard to grapple with documentation,
and legislation to ensure the business of the Church is safe and efficient. Individuals
take responsibility for the roles of: Treasurer, Health and Safety, Maintenance of the
Building, Safeguarding, Secretary. Roles and action groups are appointed as the need
arises. Groups eg to explore eco Church, to improve and develop Health and Safety
measures etc.
Members of the PCC liaise with the Diocese, the Deanery Synod, Planning Department
of the council, the Historical Buildings dept, the Jaguar Garage, the council department
for preservation of trees, Health and Safety inspectors, Sandal Castle School, Human
Resources and many more.....
We are thankful to all who serve on the PCC bringing their wider experience and their
spiritual wisdom to each meeting and to each area of the work of the PCC.

Safeguarding Report
The care and protection of everyone involved in our Church activities is the
responsibility of the whole Church. Everyone who participates in the life of our
Church has a role to play in promoting a Safer Church for all.
During the past year we have continued to develop our safeguarding processes.
Currently we are working through the Diocesan SafegLJarding Dashboard which
allows us to monitor our safeguarding procedures and ensure that we, as a parish,
are compliant with Diocesan requirements. Our parish process continues to ensure
that each ministry has an identified lead with responsibility for that area of work,
this allows for greater transparency, communication and clarity of purpose.
Ministry leads continue to support me in helping all workers, both paid and
voluntary to complete a signed volunteer agreement and personal declaration and
where necessary have a DBS check. Thank you, your support is important and really
appreciated.
Last November we had our now annual Safeguarding Sunday. This gave us the
opportunity to talk about what safeguarding means and how we can all work
towards having a safe, caring and inclusive parish where everyone can feel valued.
We have some exciting developments in our Safeguarding training programme. We
will continue to offer group safeguarding training through the Diocesan training
portal to various ministries within the parish. Those that are happy to complete the
training independently will of course have access to the training portal. I can give
further information and a link to the training portal and how to use it, just get in
touch on my parish email address safeguarding@5andalmagna.com
Safer recruitment is also an area which we will be reviewing and developing
appropriate training opportunities.
We are working well with our Sunday School and Laura has successfully recruited a
number of new volunteers.
During the coming year we will continue to work
through each of our parish ministries to ensure
all workers and volunteers are compliant with
Diocesan requirements. With the support of
Hannah and ministry leads, I will continue to
offer support and training, and develop
procedures and protocols that help to keep our
parish safe and well.

Thi5 report summarises the three meetings held in 2024. A fuller account of the
individual meetings can be found in the Parish Newsletters.
Meeting 2112124. Treacy Hall (Cathedral).
The speaker was David Greenwood-Haigh on 'Fairtrade'. Fairtrade purchasing gives
small producers of tropical food products Sustainable prices. The Diocese encourages
parishe5 to use fairtrade products. The next item by Revd David Gerrard, was on the
General Synod's policy 'Living in Love and Faith, and its authorisation, within limits, of
church blessings of couples, as individuals, in same-sex civil
marriages.
Meeting 416124. St.George's, Lupset.
The first speaker was Mr Geoff Park, Diocesan Chief
Financial Officer. The Diocese is in deficit. Parish Share
contributions need to increase by 3% year on year to
maintain ministry. However the Diocese is aware of
financial pressures on parishes. The second speaker
was Ms Janet Edmund Diocesan Chief Stewardship
Officer. She explained a national church scheme called
'The Parish Giving Scheme., This entails parishioners
pledging monthly amounts by Direct Debit which are
processed centrally on a computer system, saving parishes the
admin work of collection and 'Gift-Aid' applications. Parishioners
may also pledge to automatically increase their contributions in accordance with the
'cost of living index,. The scheme has been in place since 2019.
Meeting 12111124. St. Catherlne's, Belle Vue.
The speaker was the Venerable Catherine Thatcher the 'new' Archdeacon of Pontefrart.
She was trying to get to know the parishes in her three Deaneries. She gave a 'run
down, of her background and career to date. She was concerned as to how the Church
could 'reach' the next generation (say) in the new housing developments she saw in
the Wakefield area. She opened that question to the meeting and much discussion
ensued.

Children's Ministry Report
I'm thrilled to see our children's ministry has flourished in 2024. Our wonderful team
have created a safe, nurturing environment where the children can express and be
open about their own faith in Jesus. Our mission has been to encourage the children
to "wonder" and express their own thoughts and feelings f05tering a spiritual growth
through prayer, worship and biblical teachings.
Throughout the year, we offered various age-appropriate programmes including:
Sunday 11am Kid's Church, All Together services, Baby and Toddlers on a Wednesday
at Portobello Community Centre. A150 events such as Portobello Christmas and Light
Party where children from church, school and surrounding areas have been involved
in faith based activities.
Our dedicated team of volunteers has been the foundation of our success in engaging
with young children with planning themes, discussion time, making sure they're
involved fully in the church environment, encouraging self confidence in worship and
simply showing the children how important and welcome they are.
In 2024 we have also focused on Admissions to Communion which has had a positive
input from the families. They have felt appreciated that they can be involved in
communion as a family and also expressed that it has helped the children understand
the meaning of communion during services and
session5.
As we look ahead, we aim to continue to grow
children's church and expand our outreach to
include more children and families in the
community. We look forward to another year
of serving our youngest church members and
helping
them
grow in
their
faith.

Every Good Work Youth Project Report
It has been a year. Well, I mean, obviously, this is an 'annual report,. It's a yearly thing-
the clue 15 in the name. But, it has been a yearl ! ! Every Good Work is moving forward
with St Helen's and St Catherine'5 and doing Good Work. Between these two churches
we have 3 youth groups operating, one worshipping community starting after the Easter
holidays, three in-school clubs running and loads more planned for the future. Sadly,
due to the lack of a youth worker at St George's church and limitations of time, things
have temporarily paused there, but the advert is out and so we are hopeful we will
appoint someone in the very near future.
We have recently completed our first Acorn Course, on which 8 young people from the
Eastmoor area came and learned about social action and what Christians do in the
world, as well as Jesus and why he is important. They are now moving on to form a
worshipping community that will also engage in social action and this will be in the area
that they choose. They appear to have a passion for feeding people who need help, and
after spending time with refugees at a monthly meal, an evening at the Community
Awareness Project, a food bank and Christians Against Poverty it is easy to see why they
know that this is important.
We also had a fantastic weekend at Bolton Abbey where these young people
experienced a bit longer walks than they are used to, thinking about the beautiful
countryside as a deliberate act of a creator God and a church service. As a group, we led
the prayers that they wrote and one of the young people rang the church bell.
Hot Chocolate is a club that is finally finding its feet and moving forward with a real
sense of purpose and we are going to be taking some of those young people on the
Acorn journey in September/October. Please continue to shower this work in prayer- it
is so needed I
Lastly, I would like to thank the most amazing people who have given up their time to
help both me and these young people. At Game Changers, Anne Brook, Fran Peace and
Wendy and Graham Colbeck have helped provide a calm and fun atmosphere where
young people come and play board games, complete jigsaws and go through a couple of
packets of biscuits. At Hot Chocolate, Caroline Rountree, Chris Peace, Dom Tuck, Max
Wooler and Rachel Hodson are regulars, with Teddy Foster and Julian Finn getting a
special mention. They help keep an extraordinary group of young people happy, fed and
gainfully enjoying themselves for an hour. One of the volunteers said it is the hardest
but most rewarding hour of their week. I think that sums it up perfectly.

Shield Report
The youth group at St Helen's has continued to be well supported by parents and
young people. We currently have 15 young people who attend SHIELD regularly. The
age range is 11 to 18 years. We welcomed some year 6 members to SHIELD when we
began Youth Alpha in March. We hope this will help them with the transition to high
school in September. Some churches do not have a youth group, so we are pleased
to include young people from other churches in the local area.
SHIELD members helped to pack the Christmas hampers to bless families who are
receiving support from Christians Against Poverty. It wa5 a huge team effort and
thank you to Andy Owen for
helping to coordinate the
evening.
SHIELD has helped to raise
money for World Vision, in
support of Liz and Andy Rowe
who visited Nepal in the
Autumn and we thank the
young people for their
commitment to this charity
SHIELD is led and run by
volunteers who all have many
years of experience working with children and young people.
It is a privilege to provide a
safe space for young people
where they can relax. make
friends and learn more of
God's love and His plan for
their lives. We are still
hoping for more people to
help at SHIELD sessions so
' please get in touch if you are
i nterested.

Christians Against Poverty Report
Throughout 2024 at the Debt Centre we have continued to serve clients, both in
dealing with their debts, and with a number of associated issues, including domestic
violence and threatened house repossession. Even if someone doesn't stay with CAP
all the way to becoming debt free, there may have been other way5 in which we can
support them, for example, helping to raise the money for a car repair so that they
can continue to travel to work, or Supporting them with the early stages of a
bankruptcy application.
We have tried to develop links with other agencies in Wakefield that provide support,
because there are many sources of help in the city, if one knows where to look. And
we have worked to raise our profile in turn with Council-based and voluntary
organisations so that they can recommend our service when appropriate.
Our team of willing volunteers has grown, and includes help with administrative tasks
as well as befriending. We continue to be grateful for the generous support of
members of St. Helen's and St.
Paul's congregations in various
ways, such as shopping for and
assembling the Christmas
hampers we deliver to clients
(the Shield youth group were an
enormous help here once again).
Towards the end ofthe year we
invited the sponsors who fund
the Debt Centre to afternoon tea,
which Stewart Mcculloch, CEO of
CAP also attended, in order to
express our thanks to them, and
update them on the progress of
the Centre.
With our thanks to all who support us in prayer and in practical ways.

Make Lunch
In October 2024, we celebrated the fifth anniversary of Make Lunch in Portobello,
marking five years of serving meals and creating a supportive community
environment for families during school holidays. Throughout last year we had
amazing numbers With families returning and new familie5 being warmly welcomed
into the sessions, fostering a sense of a big Make Lunch family.
Healthy menus have been provided with love through Cath Moxham and the
amazing kitchen team where the families enjoyed a warm and nutritious meal
together. The biggest winner has always been the chocolate fudge cakel Community
sharing shows positively in these sessions sharing stories and experiences reinforcing
support and a listening ear to young families.
Last August we provided every Wednesday entertainment from African Drummin8,
Nature crafts and a trip to Cleethorpes beach. These positive engagements have
been a wonderful blessing to each family. We are so thankful for individuals in the
parish who supported this event by providing costs, which enabled all families to
make precious memories together.
A special thank you to all the
dedicated volunteers who have
contributed to the success of
Make Lunch over the years. Every
single person in the team brings
warm, supportive invitation to
every family that walks through
the doors creating a feeling of
belonging.
Looking ahead, Make Lunch in
Portobello aims to keep going
with our heartwarming sessions
including new events in the
future. We're also hoping to get
young people involved in the
serving, aiming to give them a
sense of involvement and self confidence in new skills.
Lastly a big thank you to everyone who has been a part of the journey so far, and we
look forward to many more years of making a difference together!

The Spring Report
How quickly the years pass here at The Spring, although I sometimes think its down
to the sheer volume of activities that we manage to fit in throughout the seasons
and throughout everything The Spring continues to be at the heart of our
Community and God at the heart of all that we do to serve that Community.
Fellowship & Fundraising- once again I
we started the year with our
Volunteers Tea Party in January, an
opportunity for us as a staff team to
serve our amazing army of helpers, we
had 72 this year gather in the Spring

sharing stories and sharing in lots of
laughter with one another. What a
blessing our ladies and gentlemen are to us and all who come here.
We have seen the Spring bring people together so often through the years, and this
year has been no exception as we have hosted over the year, Sandal Art Group,
Newmillerdam Wl, Wakeylele, and Wakefield Soroptomists, to name but a few.
We have also been tremendously blessed in all our fundraising endeavours over the
year, with donations amounting to almost £13,000 in 2024 .

The Spring Report continued
Our team have been amazing as always throughout the year, and whilst we have said
farewell to some we have welcomed others. Carol retired from The Spring in August
2024, having served with us first as a volunteer and then as a staff team member in
the Kitchen, leaving a vacancy which was then filled by Sally, who came to us with an
abundance of experience following her 20 years looking after the catering at
Wakefield Hospice, and her existing role as Pastoral lead at Sandal Methodists. Whilst
it is always sad to see team members leave we wish Carol well in her retirement, and
feel very blessed to retain her as a Volunteer again and then to be blessed having
been given Sally who has settled in well with the team and whom we look forward to
working alongside for many years to come.
Whilst volunteering is such a privilege to do, it does come with certain
responsibilities, and I must thank everyone who attended our Safeguarding, Fire,
Health and Safety Training workshops which we held over the Summer months,
wonderfully facilitated by Gerard Kiely-jones and Mark Buckley, our Parish
Safeguarding and Health and Safety Officer respettively.
The Spring, in itself, as a building continues to withstand the rigours of our daily
busyne55 and we saw a new roof installed in the back end of the year along with
various tweaks - ably overseen by our facilities lead, Craig Orr, or Mr Fixit, as we often
refer to him as- what a blessing he is to us all here.
Finally, as always, huge thanks to my
invaluable team- Jackie and Margaret, who
deputise so selflessly in my absence and
serve beautifully all year round equally
supported by the wonderful Jane, Jean,
Cathy and Sally. Thank you to my supportive
Directors - Reverend Hannah, Craig, Brian
and Mary Hampton and of course a massive
heartfelt thank you to our enormous team
of volunteers without whom none of this
would be possible, and our faithful
customers who continue to support us
everyday.
I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with
my whole heart, Psalm 86.12
