PCC Progress Report, March 2023
Overvlew
The past year12022-231 has been an Incredlbly busy one at Grand Junctlon at St Mary
Ma8dalene's. One of the comments we often receive from visitors we show round is what a
lot we seem to have going on In the buildin& and they are further surprised to hearthe size
of the team deliverin8 this volume of activity. The Grand Junction staff team has grown over
the past year, but so too have the projerts we are deliveringl
While there are stlll hllls to climb in terms of bringing In the Income we need from
fundraising and hires, we have already achieved a huge amount POSt-pandemlc, and have
effectlvely stabilised our regular offer of adult cla$5es and young people's after-school clubs
50 that the local communltyfeel they can rely on us to offer on80in8 servlces.
Malntainin8 the mixed ecology of use that is created by the mix of communlty projects,
music and arts events, commerclal hires, and the church Is both an art and a science, but it
continued to be done very effectively over the past year. As we build our reputstion wlth
music promoters we have seen the contrlbution that concerts make to income generation
Increase; with hopes that this will head much further in this direction in the coming years.
Our relationship with Bovingdons, the contractor who run the café and dellver our more
high-end commercial hires. has continued to be amicable, with any issues on the whole
resolved speedily and in a satisfactory way for all.
The completion of the work on the St Sepulchre Chapel, with the installatlon of the lights
the crowning moment of this phase, is an achievemeryt to be celebrated. Both Grand
Junctlon and the Church PCC w*ll now have the pleasure of exploring how this part of the
bulldlng can be carefully opened up to wider use.
With Fr Henry Everett leaving in the summer, the relationship between Grand Junction and
the church has been picked up by the PCC church wardens and has been one of good
communication and positive collaboration

Young People and SCI￿015 Programme:
Junction Juniors and Young Actors continue to run as our Monday after-school clubs, with a
new regular artivity Green Kids Clubs recently starting on Tuesdays. Takeover the Future
continues to happen about tswo terms out of three. Our holiday provision steadily increased
in 2022, so that we were offering some holiday workshops for young people (mostly primary
school age) during every holidayexceptthe Chrlstmas holidays. We also added two Music
Management programmes for young people aged 1fv21 to learn about careers in the music
industry and the skills they would need to get into it. We have continued to hone our focus
on creativity to boost communication skills and wellbeing for the you age 8roups, and
employability skills and confidence building for older young people.
2022 also saw the beginning of the Wonderful Words Programme. We were lucky enough to
secure two years of funding for this in summer 2022 from Paul Hamlyn Foundation to deliver a
programme focused on vocabulary instruction through drama for Years l and 2 children. We are
now working each week with a group of 15 children at St Mary Magdalene's, St Stephen's and
Edward Wilson. Regularwonderful Words family eventsforthe children tsking part will build on
the in-school pro8ramme to introduce new famllles to the activtties happenin8 at Grand Junctlon,
The project also greatly strengthens our relationship with our local school5.
Communlty Open Days:
We ran three of our own communtty festivals in 2022. Two took place in the summer using
the green space around the building as well as some indoor spaces. We then ran an indoor
Autumn Festival In November 2022. All events were attended byaround 500 people. We also
took part in Westbourne Festival with a number of activities.
Famlly Shows:
In the first part of 2022 we continued our family perfomiancesthrough small pots of
funding. In summer 2022 we secured funding from Foyle Foundation to allow us to deliver
further 12 shows lover 6 days}, which began to take place from October 2022. Numbers
have steadily grown for these performances. with some being attended by as many as i¢X)
people.
We have recently moved from our very Iow-COSt family ticket to a Pay What You Can
Scheme. This allows us to keep our ticket price lower than any othertheatre in London. but
also allows those who can afford to pay more to do so. and. Importantly, we can keep track
of numbers attending. Family shows now tske place once a month on Saturdays or during
school holidays.
