Fln•nc4•1 Report •f the Parochlal Church Council for 2023
In 2023 total funds rose £180,922 from £3,750.644 to £3,931,566 ￿ thereby ochleved
partlal recovery in the 2022 fall from 2021's total of £4.072.073.
Wkn1e thfs Is ? very satisfactory result it was helped by some peculiar v4ents. Of prfme
importan¢¢, the Guardiafts (a separntety r¢9iStered charlty) contributed £124,800 in the
year to offset the cost of the major repalN The repair programme as defir￿ in 2022 is
no¥v complete and the Guardian5 grants for these ￿paIrS. Indudlng those recefved after
31-Dec-2023, wlll exceed £225.0fy). The PCC is extremely gra￿ful to the Guardlans for their
yjpport and recognises that wlthout It the repalrs could not have been carried out.
The resiAts atso bEnefiited from a revival in the stock market& In 2022 the capltal value of
the Parlsh's investrnents recorded a k•ss £(293A49) but in 2023 the Investft￿nts athleved
piial galn of £190,325.
Removing from the totsl these plus the legacy Income (É18,621}, VAT recovery and otlier
grants {£32.651) and adding back the major repairs (£140.596) reveaEs that the ParFsh lost
£(44.879) on its day"to-<lay opertrions. Whlle thts Vrn5 an improvement on the 2022 resulf
£(68.260) thef e is no doubt that the parish has nrt yet recovered frnffl the irnpèrts of the
COVTD pafkdemt, Church attendanc¢ is still d*>wn. there are signlncarstly f￿￿er weddln9S
and fU￿ra1$, the hirers of our church ￿115 have been 5foTV to fesume their a£rivlUes, and
workl￿from.1￿ffte has reduced the demand fty places In our Pr&Schod.
The 2023 operating Ioss Joins a hlstory of such losses. Thwe are two maiDr cofttrlbutors to
¢over,ng thls l¢>ss: St Atphege Thurch and the St FrancÈs Parish Fund (which covers the
expenses of the Parish, suth as the Piofwr Minister, vknSch are not Jttrlbutable to any other
part of the Parlth). The desire to invest ln ministry and bulldings puts significant pressure
on the reserves held by kxxh. The parlsh therefore faces signiflcant strategic declslons
re9•rding thelr future use and thls In turn may affect our abllty to subsidise suth operating
losses. The aim must be to grow our rnembershlp and Incorne through such Investrnent. but
such a Stratsqy Is not without risk. A furth•r tisk Is ¢xJr over-dependenee on inve5trnent
