Organisational structure
SophiaForumisacompanylimitedbyguarantee,incorporatedon4November2008andregisteredasacharityon 15
September2009.Thecompanywasestablishedundera Memorandumof Association,whichestablishedtheobjects and
powersofthecharitablecompanyandisgovernedbytheArticlesandAssociation.Thetrustees,whoarealso the

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The organisation'spurposesandaimsas set out in the objectscontainedin the company'smemorandumare to promote
and advocatefor the rights,health,welfareand dignityof women livingwith HIV throughresearch,raisingawareness and
influencingpolicy,bya)developinganddeliveringouradvocacyprogramme;b)bringingtogetherinformation and
researchontheissuesaffectingwomenlivingwithHIV;c)creatingpartnershipswithorganisationsand individuals
deliveringservicesandd)buildingrelationshipswithpolicymakers.Theseaimsareconsistentwiththepurposes for
which the organisation was established.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Impact
Thetrusteesreviewtheaims,objectivesandactivitiesonaquarterlybasiseachyear.Thereviewlooksatwhat the
organisationhas achievedandthe outcomesof its workin the previousyear.The reviewlooksat the successof each key
activityandthebenefitsit hasbroughtto thosegroupsof peoplethattheorganisationis setup to help.Thereview also
helps to ensure the aims, objectives and activities remain focused on the organisation's stated purposes.
SophiaForumhashadasuccessfulyearofoperationsdespitesignificantfundingandstaffingconstraintsaswellas the
impactofCOVID-19.Wehavesuccessfullybuiltonpreviousachievementswhilstalsodevelopingsustainabilityof the
organisation through infrastructure strengthening for the creation of future projects and organisational growth.
Programmes
1. The GROWS project funded by Fast Track Cities (FTC) focuses on improving the quality of life of women over the age of 40 living with HIV. We launched the policy report for this work in October 2022 and continue to work on the GROWS Training manual workbook and creation of videos supporting HCP and WLHIV. In March 2023 we held an International Women's Day event with our partners NAM aidsmap, Positively UK and UCL along with women who had taken part in the GROWS training, showcasing our successes to the wider sector.
2. Project Respond funded by Gilead focused on the lived experiences of Black African and Black Caribbean heritage women living with HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic. A final report is due for publication in Jan 2024 and an abstract was accepted at EACS conference in Summer 2023.
3. Sophia Forum is part of a new collaborative project with THT, NAT and C12 Bureau called HIV Equity, Equity and Justice providing HIV Awareness, Peer Support and advocacy in prisons.
Conferences
BritishHIVAssociation(BHIVA):SophiaForumuseditsstandtopublicisework,andtobuildrelationships with
stakeholders in the HIV community at both the Spring and Autumn BHIVA conferences.
WeheldalivespokenwordeventinOctober2022associatedwithapreviousprojectBeardedandFlushed which
included a short film screening a partnership between NAZ, Sophia Forum, 4M and Positively UK.
SophiaForumCEOpresentedonthemenopauseatanawarenessraisingeveninWalthamForestandinvolvedwith a
menopause session at a women's group hosted by Positive East.
Advocacy
We'vebeeninvolvedin MSD's50 over 50 Campaignfor peopleageingwith HIV. SophiaForumsupportedMSD to identify
womenofdiversebackgroundstosharetheirthoughts,fearsandhopesofpeoplelivingwithHIVagedover50years of
age.
SophiaForum'smenopauseresourceshavenowbeentranslatedintomultiplelanguagescollaboratingwithDr's and
communitymembersto supporttranslationsfor distributionsthroughoutEuropeand in Africancountries.We revised our
longstandingprep leafletsand have furthertranslationstoo supportdemand.Thesehave beenwidelyused in the UK and
international orgs.
We continueto work with Gilead's'Findyour Four'campaignat an organisationallevel,and our CEO workedwith them in
the creation of their menopause resource.
Our CEO workedwith ViiV Europeanpolicyteam in developinga sectionspecificto the needsof women in their European
HIV Policy document which was published in 2022/3

WecollaboratedwithLondonSHARECollaborativeonanurgentjointresearchandcommunityresponsetothe global
outbreak of human monkeypox.
OurCEOisco-chairoftheLondonPrEpEquityworkinggroupandcontinuesouradvocacyandcampaignwork ensuring
PrEP equity for all.
Grants
Wewereawardedseveralnewgrantsandgeneratedincomethroughnewpartnerships.Weenteredintoa partnership
with Chelseaand WestminsterNHS FoundationTrust to providepeer supportto peoplebeingdiagnosedvia A&E BBV Opt
OutTesting,calledConnectToCare.Wewillrecruitafull-timepeercaseworkerandalsodevelopamandatory training
module for NHS staff. This is funded by Gilead for 1 year.
Personnel and organisational growth
We recruited3 new trusteesand beganrecruitmentof a new Co-Chairthis will remaina rollingprocessfor the board and
organisation.
Inadditiontogrowingourboardoftrustees,wecontinuedtocontributetowardsthedevelopmentofourtrustees by
attendingUnconsciousBiastrainingforalltrustees.Weareactivelyseekingfurthertrainingtostrengthenour boards
essentialknowledgeWealsoworkedonfurtherdevelopingournewstrategybyconductingaskillsauditand planning
next steps to recruit more trustees and skills on the board.
Currenttrusteeshavestartedacompletereviewandupdatingofallourgovernancedocumentstoensurewe are
complaint with charity law.
Community engagement
OneSophiaForumTrusteeisamembersoftheUKCommunityAdvisoryBoard(UK-CAB)SteeringGroup,NAT's advisory
group and a regular speaker for THT Positive Voices.
OurCEOisamemberoftheHIVactionplanoversightgroup,NATAdvisoryboardmemberandUKHSA SHARE/LEADS
advisory board.
SophieStrachan(CEO)wasinvitedtospeakaboutourworkinapanelforWorldAIDSDay.Shewasalsoinvitedto join
ViiV's new advisory board on HIV prevention checkpoints and community-based services.
Ourtrusteesarealsoinvitedtositonstakeholdergroupsandsharetheirexpertise.Wealsoattendawidevariety of
eventsacrosstheHIVandsexualhealthsector,includinga FastTrackCitiesWomenandPrEPevent,a U=U presentation
and UK Black Pride.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Sophia Forum ('the Company')
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 March 2023.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As thecharity'strusteesof theCompany(andalsoits directorsforthepurposesof companylaw)youareresponsible for
the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').
HavingsatisfiedmyselfthattheaccountsoftheCompanyarenotrequiredtobeauditedunderPart16ofthe2006 Act
andareeligibleforindependentexamination,I reportinrespectof my examinationof yourcharity'saccountsas carried
outunderSection145oftheCharitiesAct2011('the2011Act').IncarryingoutmyexaminationIhavefollowed the
Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
Ihavecompletedmyexamination.Iconfirmthatnomattershavecometomyattentioninconnectionwith the
examination giving me cause to believe:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
Thefinancialstatementsofthecharitablecompany,whichisapublicbenefitentityunderFRS102,have been
preparedinaccordancewiththeCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReportingbyCharities:Statement of
RecommendedPracticeapplicableto charitiespreparingtheir accountsin accordancewith the Financial Reporting
StandardapplicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland(FRS102)(effective1January2019)',Financial Reporting
Standard102'TheFinancialReportingStandardapplicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland'andthe Companies
Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
Income
All incomeis recognisedin the Statementof FinancialActivitiesoncethe charityhas entitlementto the funds,it is
probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructiveobligationcommitting the
charitytothatexpenditure,itisprobablethata transferofeconomicbenefitswillberequiredinsettlement and
the amountof the obligationcan be measuredreliably.Expenditureis accountedfor on an accrualsbasisand has
beenclassifiedunderheadingsthataggregateallcostrelatedtothecategory.Wherecostscannotbe directly
attributedtoparticularheadingstheyhavebeenallocatedtoactivitiesonabasisconsistentwiththeuse of
resources.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restrictedfundscan onlybe usedfor particularrestrictedpurposeswithinthe objectsof the charity. Restrictions
arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits
The charitablecompanyoperatesa definedcontributionpensionscheme.Contributionspayableto the charitable
company's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
