Charity registration number: 1131609
Objectives and Activities
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | To relieve the suffering of Greyhounds, Lurchers and Whippets by providing necessary care and temporary shelter and by placing them in suitable homes. To advance the education of the public in the care of Greyhounds, Lurchers and Whippets. |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
Connections with the public and information about the dogs in our care were conveyed via social media and our website. Home checks are carried out to ensure dogs and owners/homes are appropriately matched. Advice prior to and after adoption was offered to the public either through a virtual platform or over the phone. The cost of living crisis is affecting the volume of potential owners coming forward. The cost of living crisis has also been partly responsible for more dogs than in previous years have being returned to us. We also have had a slightly higher intake of sight-hounds that have been living as pets with owners who find themselves no longer able to care for their dog. Other animal rescues are also struggling to accommodate dogs and this is putting pressure on our charity to offer dogs within our catchment breed a shelter space. We are still liaising with other rescues in the hope that the situation **improves. ** |
| We have maintained a strict policy of never euthanising a healthy dog by accommodating dogs that would be difficult to rehome within the Greyhound Rescue North East team, in foster placements or permanent residence at our kennels. |
||
|---|---|---|
| Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit |
Para 1.18 | Trustees have had regard for the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance. This is demonstrated by the support provided to ensure that healthy dogs are rehomed and those unsuitable for rehoming are cared for. The charity continues to offer advice and support to the public to increase knowledge of animal welfare and offer additional support as required. |

Para 1.38 | The founder of the charity is our main volunteer. His contribution is fundamental to the care of the dogs and the day-to-day running of the charity. He also provides the kennelling facilities to house the dogs free of charge. 4 volunteers help with work at the kennels and 1 of these volunteers also runs the Instagram account. 1 volunteer helps with the Facebook account and prepared the 2020-2021 accounts. 2 volunteers support admin and purchasing for the kennels. |
| Other | Trustees oversee the running of the charity, assist with all aspects related to caring for and homing the dogs, and are responsible for all administration, Facebook, banking and accounts, website and marketing, and fundraising |

Para 1.41 | Collection tubs Calendars. Pets at Home, at very short notice, stopped supporting us as their charity of the year midway through the year to support Pets Pantry, a small unregistered charity providing food to people who can’t afford to feed their pets. According to their Facebook page, this charity paused operations September 2023. We have not contacted Pets at Home to reapply for charity of the year status because of the abrupt way they ended our relationship. The cosmetics store Lush contacted us at the beginning of 2023 to ask if they could support us with their charity pot. We initially declined due to lack of volunteers to attend the in-store event. However we managed to enlist some volunteers to help and liaised with the Newcastle Eldon Square store to set up the fundraiser day. On the morning we were due to attend the store we received an email saying we could not be part of their charity fundraisers because we are a greyhound rehoming charity and Lush are opposed |

|---|---|---|
| Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period |
Para 1.21 | Financial position remains viable, and an independent examiner has reviewed accounts as our income has risen above £25k. |
| Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held |
Para 1.22 | In addition to the general running costs of the Rescue, the charity endeavours to have funds to meet larger, unforeseen veterinary bills for animals in our care and those being rescued on an ongoing basis. There is a recognition that larger kennel facilities will be required in the future to meet demand and funding for this requires a build up of reserves as running costs allow. |
