There I be few events that have had a greater impact on its worshipping life than Covid-19. Nevertheless, God has been good and there is much to report, celebrate and be thankful for. Despite the disruption. many of St Philip's activities have continued in other forms and new ones have been initiated. Not all are covered in this report. bul the selectlon detailed in the following pages d8monstrates the continued vitality of the lrfe of the chU￿h. The latter articulates the truth that the presence of God always leads to th8 overfiow of Spirit-fuelled mission - personally arKI corporately. Foundational to Ihe new vision: worship and prayer. the discipleship of th8 saints-, and the outward expression of Jesus. love through ministry and mission, particularly locally in Odd Down and Bath. Soams of Revelation Below is a summary of just some of the areas that the Spirit has particularfy highlighted over the past year. Some are th8 resurgence of historic words, some are new. We honour His word like a seam of gold running through a r￿kface that is our privllege to mine. Beacon on a hilVw*er flowi downhill St Philip's as a beacon on a hill is a historic word that has been prevalent in Tuesday momings throughout this last year. It is similar to other pictures that we have receiv8d of water flowing downhill from Odd tk)wn. These words indicate the activty of the Spirit and speak to the influence of St Philip's in th8 city. Wave of His resencerrsunami of love On day the Lord gave three people the same - that a wave of His presence was coming. One of the three people described it as a 'Tsunami of Love". We have since honoured this word on th& prayer room wall and with a worship song wrltten by Jay Cook called "Send Your Waves". We continue to pray for the Spirit to poured out. lanted Earty in Lockdown 1, the Lord told us Ihat He was plants'ng seeds. Though we are unable to see them in this s8ason, they will bear fruit. REPORTS: BEHOLD These reports reflect our d8sire to pursue the presence of th8 Lord and minister first unto Him. In our pursuit of Him. and in our growing awar6n8ss of the manifest prwJen¢e of the Holy Spirit, St Philip's is a discipleship environment We believe that the most important thing is th* God is ￿tr￿ured and the saints equipwj to release heaven outside the walls of tho church. Worship- Jay Cook Wornhip sits firmty at the foundation of our vision as one of the key way5 that we enter Into the manifest presence of God. We hold worship at a very high value. We believe that we are called to behold the manifest presence of God and to pour out our love and affection upon Him in worship. It has been exciting to see tha worshlp team grow in freedom. d8Pth. devotion numbers. Thls is particularly the case considering the challenging circumstances of this year. As a team, we have had to adapt to a few different circumstances this year. including: recording wotship sets from home. doing socidly distanced live setvices. and recording and filming full length worship sets on a SurKlay èv8ning. Although the ways in which we CO￿orate￿ worship have been changin9. the team have stspped up to every challenge and done a fantastic job. To reflect our high value on worship. we have undertaken a number of upgrades to the sound and visual systems to help facilitate our times of worship tC*3ether. So far, we have installed a new visuals computer and bought the latest version of ProPresenter findusty standard for song words and visuals). We have also adapted our wsuals system to run high- definition visuals to muftiple screens throughout the room to he5p people further back in the room see the w¢yds and pictures on the screen. (This has helped a lot since having to do socially distanced services). The next move will be to purchase a new digital sound desk, which will help to further enhanc8 our tlme8 of worship and make Ilfe easler for the t￿m. We have been unabl8 to dive deep into team development this y8ar. but we have managed a few training evenings. These sessions have aimed to equip everyone on team so that ttr can operata In their role whilst also being able to freety worship the Lord. Worship team, production team and sound team are all one team. split into separate roles. We hold each rol8 at the same value- whether at the front or behind the scenes. St Philips We have moved deeper into dtfferent ways of worshipping the Lord and finding freedom In worship. One of the ways in which we have done this was by putting on different events. When we were able to meet in person, we had a Kingdom Com8 - whlch is a worship and prayer evening where we press into worship and prayer in the Spirit. Then when lockdown came, during Lent, we had Abide evenings on Zoom - which were an hour bng and prnssed into time in His pr8sence with no agenda, just relying entirdy on what God wanted to do with the evening. rcumslances were diffwent. we had plans to have more frequent prayer and worship nights, but unfortunately, we have been restricted by the pandemic. I'm looking forward to the &￿Ing of restrictK)ns so that we Can all worship together agaln! I'd like to give thanks and acknowledgement to Dave Atkinson who took on the role of camera man and worship vidèo editor for this season. whilst still leadlng worship and training young people on how to use the video cameras. I'd also like to thank the wholo team - everyone has stepped up to the task of dealing with onlin8 seryices brilliantty- Prayer- Paul Ferguson Prayer also sits at the foundation of our vision as another key way In which we practice the presence of God and leam to hear His voice. The role of the Holy Spirit is 8ssentiai to prayer. He teaches us how to pray by revealing to us the desires of our Fatherfs heart. Thiq is the only place from which to pray in His will so that His Kingdom would come through us. The strategy for prayer at St Philip's is that we create as many opportunities as posslble to encounter the presenc8 and grow in intimacy with the Holy Spirit. We are therefore fo¢u88ed on equipping as many people as posgible to grow in the prophetic aThJ learn how to pray in the power of the Spirit. Highlights this year have included: Tuesda momin er meetin - these meetings have grown in both Size and F)ower. Th8y are an engine room of prophetic prayer that constantly feed into the vlslon and what We believe the Father Is ￿lling us to In each season. Pra er Mini Course - intemJpt8d with thg onset of Lockdown 1. w8 ran 1.5 ccwjrses last y8ar. 30 attended the first, nearfy 40 atterKled the second. The material seeks to equip the saints to pray in the power of tha Spirit in order that we may pray as the disciples did and in obedience to Jesus, commission to us thal we heal sick. raise the dead and proclaim fre8doffl to captives. During the courses. we have seen muftiple healings. one person recèiving the gift of tcryues; and. on both occasions. over 80% gave or received a prophetic word, sorne for the first time. Kin dom Come - Kingdom Come ev8nts aro evenings of unhindered worship. interc8sslon and prophOt￿ oncounter. Though three are planned for each year. we managed t)nly one before Lockdown 1. Nevertheless, that evenlng we worshipp8d for two hou￿. tho St Philips prophetic flowed. our youth were proph•s￿ over and people w￿e healed. What a great startl 24-7 Pra er Room - during Lent of last year, the "Green RoomlCrech8" was r8frtted as a 24-7 prayer room. Time slots were booked up. some prayed through the night. and many gathered for haW nights of prayer and worship. Everything shffts on prayer and l am excited for the next incarnatlon of the prayer rooml Preaching- Paul Ferguson We don't camp around semions: we camp around the presence. We aren't satisfied mer8ty wtth g¢Jod theology; we want an encounter with His presence. We ar8 establishing a preaching cuEture In which the focus is not gifting but anointing. Every semion at St Philip's seeks to be an invitation to grow in intimacy with God and respond to Him in wayer ministry. New skills. new technology and new pattems ol ministry have all been required. For some. online worship ha5 been challenging. but for others liberating. F￿lowIng the national pattem, we have seen our overall engagement increase with people who would not normally worship at St Philip's join us each week online. Each service is watched live by around 72 households. By the erKI of the week. services are viewed on average 250 times. We have been joined by people in London, Belfast, Nottingham, Ontsrio and Sydn8y. Each week, we have broadcast a main servic8, a kids. resource and ffortnightly) a school assembly for St Philip's Primary School. l am particularly grateful for thé opportunities that have arisen through those assemblies, and also the Online Community Carols. to present the Gospel in people's homes in ways that would never have been aV￿lable to us before. The Online Community Carols was viewed over 5(K) times. including many in the area who do not atterMI St Philip's. Everything that has happ8n8d this year through our I￿lIne seNices is to the glory of God and l am grateful for the ways that He has inspired and resourced us. Belonging is reffi￿ted in many aspects of the lrfe of St Philip's, from activities that keep members of the congregation connected and encouraged in their faith." to initiatives that refl&t our place of belonging in thSs naighbourhood and city. l am particularfy gratefvl for the ways in whlch Covld has glven us new opportunitiés to connect with those outsld8 the Church as we seek to convey messag8 that 'St Philip's is here for Odd Down.. St Philip's and St Martin's Garden Schools - Paul Ferguson Our increased contact with Sl Martin's Garden School is detalled in the MATf22 report below. However, I want to aCkr￿wIedge her8. With gratitude to the Lord. the ways in which we have been able to reach out to the teachers and pupils of both the wimary schools in the parish. This has been particularty the case at Christmas and Easter in which we were able to gNè 500 Bible Society books arKI a gift to every pupil at both schools. In addition. Margaret and I have shared online assemblies * St Philip's Primary with Ad Taylor-Week5 of Emmanuel Church. These have presented us with opportunities to share the Gospel every fortnight in term time. I was parti¢ular1y encouraged that the second and third lockdowns meant that the assemblies were watched in each pupil's home. rather than just in the classroom. This is another example of the access that Covid-19 has afforded us into the community. r relationship with both schoo15 has greatly improved this past yoar. I give glory to God. They are different contexts but the Lord is opening doors in both. My relationshlp with Andy Joy has been a joy {SOfry!I this year and we have been able to bless him and his staff with gifts; a 'spa retreat. in the Manna House for th8 Staff team at the end of last Octob8r half tenrt; and messages of encouragement arKI prayer. Andy Stammers has sUpp￿ed and encouraged Claire Parfftt. head of St Martin's Garden School - in ways that were never plann￿. Th8 opportunity ft>r Andy to step into chaplaincy role there has been awesome. Pastoral Taarn - Margaret Joyce COVID restiictions have meant that people began to feel isolated very quickly. The last year has been w different to any year wa have ever known and it was really important to be led by God as we respKJnded. St Philips One of the first things we did pastoraily was to Set up regular phone calls to our church family and to some in our communty. It was important to keep in touch with everyone when we could no longer see each other. Initially the staff team made most of the phone calls but as the pandemic continued many of you join&1 the team of people who made calls to a few people regulady so that everyon8 received more than one phone call a week. The thing that most of us miss is that sense of touch and for those on their own a cuddle would mean ￿ much or holding someone's hand. We have prayed with p80ple and sensed God's touch in those prayers. We have deliv8r&J flow8rs to different people, some to those who have lost loved ones in our church family but also some in thé community. Often, we have sent flowers to those who we have sensed need a blessing or those who are unwell. Jules has forffled a team to provide Baked Blessings. There are a group of b8kers who make and deliver cakes to give a blessing to those who receive them. This is for those on their own but also families. in fact anyone can receive a baked blessing. This started in January 2021 and is happening every week. This year has ffleant the church has had to rethink how to be church. Last y&v I had a picture of a how a butterfly evolves. When It is a caterpillar it is finding tts way and preparing for the futurn. When tt tums into a chrysalis it is changing and preparing for its future life. It will emerge as a b8autrful tr￿tterfly. All the time the creature is the same. I believe God was saying that the church has 1)een the same through this pandemic but will emerge as different and more beautiful. I believe that tho Holy Spirit has led us to do things differently which will help inform tha way we do things in the fvture. Connection with each other is essential to belonging. Jesus wants us to go on caring, having compassion and seeing things through his ey8s because we belong to Him. We givè thanks for all that th8 Lord has done and wlll do at St Phlllp's in the future. 'One 2 thie'lRoast on the Road - Andy Stammers The COVID restriclions imposed in Marchl April prev8nted the running ol our morrthly 'One 2 One, Sunday lunch for memb8rs of our church congregation and wider communlty that would Mrnally eat on their own. Lockdown exacert)ated the loneliness and feeling of isolation, something th* the 'One 2 One. meal had been successfully challenging arKJ combating for many years. The group helps members to feel connected and to belong to the church. For many this may have b88n their only contact with others. Lockdown posed many obstacles to the vlsion of this group but once w8 had overcome t logistics. an opportunty arose to take cooked roast dinners out to the community using a nthork of delivery 'runners'. This has resulted in the church demonstrating the generosty. love and overflowing of the Spirit of God physically to ow community. It is wtth great joy that delivery volunteer3 are able to (socially distance) deliver meals, spend a few moments in conversation (often the only face to face conversation that Pevson may have) and find out any other needs they might have. io St Philips The group has increased in number with ddiveri8s being made to the house bound and new connections b8ing identified within the communty. We are thankful to b8 serving our community at thls time of great need. Drama Group- Yvonrn Conn)y The drama group have still been meetiThJ together r8gulaty on a Monday evening sinc8 our last show in January 2019. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic we have not been ablè to meet together in person or do any perforning on the stage. This has not stopped us from meeting together. as one of the aims of thè group is to support each other. A regular group of between 15 - 20 have attended zoom meetings, and thls has blessed so many people who alone ￿ who are missing social interactions. God has given us some v8ry gIft￿j people to enable us to produce several videos and hav8 launch￿ our YouTube channel. We felt it was important to still be connecting with the community of Odd t)own and the chann81 has enablgJ us to Skyead further afield. The music vldw was followed by a mini documentary. 'Making Drama Out Of A Crisls.. Where member5 of the group shared how having faith and being part of the drama group has helF￿ them through lockdowns and isolation. A retum to acting brought The Audition. a comedy play based on a Zoom meeting. Currentty we have just cast another play. involving 20 membets of the group. This will also be put on YouTub8 for anyone to V18w and know that we are still going. Al of our productions this year have been written by people within the group for the group at this time. These have brought in new members and the strengthening of friendships. Usually, we would have produced a large show and made donations to support the church and local charlties. Being unable to put on a big show has meant that outcometincome has remained the same and we were in a positK)n to still offer th8 church a donation and contribute to new equipment fof the work Gtyj continues to do at St Phillp& Our prayer circle has b8en for both r8quests of needs and thankfulness and wg have Seen many answers to prayers. The group memb8rs are keen encouragers and have b88n sending each other biblical roferances and songs to lift spirits and focus back to God during the dlfficult times. It has been a very productive year and we are forever thankful of the b18sslngs God pours Olrt on us through each other and the gifts God has giv6n us to reach out to people. Holiday Clth - Graham Pearson In February half-twm, 60 primary school chlldren fillwj our church with their laughter as they enjoyed the 'CHAThABOX' Time Travel holiday club over 3 days. This annual event is a great opp)rtunity to share. through games. team activities. crafts and quizzes with the primary age children in our communlty, our love of the Lord and follow Jesus. instructlons "to bring the children to him". With the help of the Tardis. lent to us by Dr Who, the children heard aTKI leamt about TRUST. Key people (Joseph, Daniel. Esther and others) from the Bibl8 travelled across li St Philips time to tell us their stories and the children acted those stories wlth them through drama and team time, activities. arKd crafts. Thanks to all the volunteers PO adults and 5 younger team help8rsl who made it all possible. and to the parents and carérs who joined us at the end of the last day to share in the fun and see what th8ir children had been doing and making. Also. to the volLJntewE who helped prepare over several weeks before hand. Each Child developed an understanding of trust. wlth each other, within families, and with activities like school. from our time travellers and with Jesus and his Father. Community Minibus - Suzame Stammers The beginning ot the y&qr saw our mlnibus being used by many member5 of our church and local communty. aiding individU￿S to reach setvices and activthes that they would struggle to otherwise. The church community used the bus for such a¢ttvities as; SPORT walks. Men's weekend to Dartmoor, collecting craft for holiday club and One 2 One. These activiti8s bring péople into a closer relationship with each other, strengthening friendships and reducing isolation. Extemal groups also use our mlnibus, such as: Springs and Julian House Syrian refugee relocation support. Unfortunately. Covid-19 reduced a lot of planned usage from March onwards. Wè were sorry to note that th8 ER updated for our 2020 Annual Church Meeting showed that four names were no longer on the ER. Of these, three members had died and one had left. Each one was a treasured member of the church family and is rnissed. We were encouraged that fourteen new members indicated their desire to belong to St Philip's by applying to b8 on th8 ER.. Safeguardlng - Jemy Barker As a Church we have Intr¢)duced a New Safeguarding Policy following the Church of England's recommendations for Promoting a Safer Church and their Safeguarding Policy Statement within The Parish Handbook. Rlsing Gen: Youth Joyce StPhilips- Wicki Atkinson with Rachel Jonos and Dave 2020 has been a year of change for St Phillp's Youth, but we have had th8 supwrt arKI prayers of the church throughout. We began the year with a confimatM)n service, the 16 St Philips Bk8hop came to our church to bless several of our young people in a moving and powerful sepiice- something we are so grateful we could do Wore any lockdowns. Until March. we were meeting Sunday mornings during the main service for toast, chat, encouragement. prayer and blblical teaching. We have a wonderful core group of young people, all currentty from church families, and the atmosphere was often encouraging and amusing. We are aware that for many of them. this was the only plac8 they have Christian friends. For a core group of those young peopte. the move from physical to Zoom meetings on a Sunday evening happened fairty easily and they continue to attend online. Howevw, there are about half th8 young people that we have been unable to get along to the Zoorns and we wlll continue to reach out and encourage wherever possible. When we have had the opportunity to meet in person in 2020, we had a good mix of young people and they have boen really happy to get together. We have had trouble keeping a consistent venue, which Is something to plan for when we're next back at church together. We have also been realty blessed by two new members of the youth leadership t8am, St Philip's ordinand. Matt Vaine and Bath Youth for Christ intem. Meg Tucker - both have fitted in w811 and led some really good sessions. We look forward to worf(ing wlth them more when we are meeting in real lrfe again. The majortty of our youth work has been on Zoom and WhatsApp this year and we ar8 SO thankful for thelr and the leaders. flexibility. plus the support of their parents. Through God's leading, a relationship was built with the new headteacher resulting in the appointment of school chaplain. This resuFted in a closer working relationship between the school and the church enablirrfJ the practical allocation of volunteers and finance to assist in the school vision that 'every child matt8rs' and demonstrating the love, care and compassion that overrtows from the Father5 heart. Practlcally. in partnership with the GoodGym. St Philip's volunteers cthred dense undergrowth to create a forest school area and as lockdown progressed. so did foc poverty as the effects of zero overtime. furtoughing and job losses hit members of the community. Through the MATT22 initiative, St Philip's supported the school. along with other community groups, in the distribution of weekly fo¢)d parcels. Bill Ga The year started well with the green room being redecorated arKI refumished lo make tt a 24-7 Prayer Room to bo used through Lent. The door locks were mc*Jified to allow access froffi the outside so that it could be used indep8ndently from the church building and b0 available 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, it could only Used for a few weeks before th8 Covid lockdown closed the church buildings to everybody. Obviously, the I￿kdOWn pr8vent8d the routin8 maintenancè that would normally have been carried out. When access to the building was allowed some maintenance could resume and some pipework in the gents. toilet was replaced. The opportunty was taken before services could recommence to cl8ar the narthex, remov8 all the notice boards and r8palnt the walls in a light grey colour to make it more welcoming. New welcome graphics have bew put up with plans for more décor to enhance the feel of enteting the church. At the same time the Aijministrator's office was repainted arml new desks installed giving 4 workstations for flexible working. The sound and vlsual system in the church has also been upgraded to make it mor8 suitable for live and recorded services. Another project that Is under way is to make the baptisty suitablo for families with young children to use during gervices. A local firm has donated and installed a gLqss screen betw8en the church and the baptistry to make it soundproof. It is proposed to move the font to a position outside the church. This will open up th8 space and when It has b88n carpetèd and a sound system instslled it will be a versatile room for use during services on for other me8tings during tho week. Plans are in place to upgrade the ventilation system in the kitchen to m68t the latest safety standards. Thts work has been schgduled for early in the yèar. We are blessed to have such a versatile church buildlng wh￿h is in very good condition. Thanks go to all those ChL1￿h m8mbws who have given their time and energy to help keep the building well maintained and we look fO￿ard to fvrther impyovements n8Xt 19 St Philips Roof R rt- Graham Pearson PCC approv&J a plan in December 2019 to undertake much-needed repairs to the flat roof at the front of the Church to stop sevèral leaks that were damaging ceilings. rooms arKI spac05 in the Church and affecting their use. by Setting up a Capital Development Fund, 8e&king grants, and potentially a loan. During 2020 we applied to a number of charities and trusts to supp(xt thè plans with varying success. but in October the Congregation generously respond&Y with further donations to gather the funding needed. without a loan. to s&irt the work before anothar wlnter took its toll. The contractors began the work to cover the 200 square metres with special membram, shaped insulation and triple glazed roof lights on 16 November which was completed on January 11 2021, successfully passing several tésts and inspections. The flnal project cost of £72.489 was met from the congregation giving of £43.218 It20.086 given in 2020} and raised from Grant$1£302001. As we start to gather again and transition to live worship. it is important that we ate open to: the Spirit in these days our new vision a5 we focus on uniting all ministry and mlssion under it the opportunity that Covid has given us to review what we do, why we do it and how we do it. We will be driving forward a number of development plans to adapt and maximise the facilities God has given us. This will include refreshing aspects of our building fabric and exploring ways of increasing capacity on Sundays to disciple our children and young people. I am excited to see whether MATll2 will grow to be our prinwy social transfornmtion ministy. Our APCM was FXJStponed and eventually held following Covid restrictions on 18 Octobor 2020. All church members are encouraged to register on the electoral roll ol the Church and stand for election to the PCC. Th8 PCC members aré responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concem and importance to th8 parish including deciding on how the funds of the Church are to be allocated and spent. When planning and undertaking our actfvities for the year, we have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public beneflt. and in particular the speclfic guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. Reserves Free reserves The free reseprfes of the PCC are those funds that are freely available to be spent in pursuing the charitable objects. Reseries It is our PCC policy to ty and maintain a balance on free reserves which equates to at least 2 months unrestricted payments. This is equivalent to £27.083. It is held to smooth fluctuations in cash flow and to meet emergencies and expenditure. The 23 St Philips balance of free reserves at the year-end as shown above is below this target and the PCC aim to improve the position in 2021. This policy is reviewed annually.
