## **Trustees Report for St Leonard’s Church, Streatham. Yr 2020 – 20201** 

## **RECTORS REPORT** 

_‘I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you_ …’ _Philippians 1v3&4_ 

The word that best describes my experience of serving as your Rector during the past year is ‘gratitude’ and Paul’s words in the verse above could be my own, as I write this report. 

It has been a year unlike any other and yet, despite the fears, anxiety, and sadness we have remained steadfast in our commitment to be a community of ‘Faith, Hope and Love’ in the heart of Streatham. Sien Yin, in her finance report talks about our need to be _‘nimble, responsive and adaptive to change’_ and this is _exactly_ what we have managed to be this year. 

During Lockdowns we have worked hard to offer online worship, prayerful and practical support and wherever possible, maintain vital human connection. The building has been cared for and our finances have remained stable. Zoom has been a Godsend; enabling the continuity of so much we enjoy and at times, more efficiently, creatively, and inclusively, than before. 

Having said that, it has been a joy to return to ‘in person’ worship, despite the necessary steps to ensure risk is managed and the gallons of hand sanitiser that is used! Christmas and Easter services have been highlights for me, and I am deeply grateful to our Clergy Team for their support in the sharing of preaching and worship leading. I also want to pay tribute to Calum Fraser our Director of Music and his team who have kept our hearts enlivened with sacred music despite the endless changes to the ‘rules’. 

The reports that follow are inspiring and reflect the reason why I feel such a deep sense of gratitude for the body of Christ at St Leonard’s. 

I do not feel the need to repeat any of what you will read here, there is nothing I can add other than my thanks, to you and to the God who works through you. 



We have a remarkable team at St Leonard’s, and it has been a joy to watch it grow in size and capacity over the past year. 

At the back of this report is a copy of our **Mission Action Plan** which was updated in July at our vision morning. It sets out _why_ we do all that we do and therefore helps us keep our focus on the things that we believe matter. I have updated it to reflect this year’s developments. 

It has been said that _‘Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality’_ and if in some small way my leadership has encouraged and enabled the many people who have contributed to this remarkable report to achieve all that they have this year, then I am deeply grateful to have been able to do what is required of me, as your Rector. Thank you. 

I cannot let this opportunity pass by without making specific mention of our outgoing Church Warden, Ann Morisy. Ann has served as Church Warden since almost the beginning of my time at St Leonard’s and has been an incredible source of wisdom, energy and fun. We release her with heart felt gratitude from the many roles and responsibilities of Church Warden safe in the knowledge that she isn’t going anywhere! Thanks, must also extend to Margie (and Barney), for sparing Ann over the past 3.5 years!

## **CHURCHWARDENS’ REPORT** 

Remembering 2020 is quite a challenge as memories have been obscured by the impact and implications of Covid-19. However, it is important to trawl our memories because 2020 was a remarkable year at St Leonard’s with new ways of operating to accommodate the various lockdowns and progress being made on many fronts. 

# As churchwardens our primary responsibility is for the buildings and churchyard, and in 2020 this included both church _and Hall_ . For the last thirty years our church hall has been leased by Spires as the base for work with homeless people. During this time, the condition of the building has deteriorated, and Spires recognised that they were not in a position to undertake the necessary repairs. As a way forward we have drawn up a new three year lease with Spires, and as a church we have agreed to carry the 



responsibility for repairs. This is a big commitment, but as Spires ceases to be sole leaseholder this will enable the hall complex to be available to a range of hirers.  It will also release the top floor flat and middle floor meeting room for potential income generating streams to help maintain the hall. This new arrangement will enable wider community use of the building whilst enabling the valuable work with homeless people to continue, as Spires have request the hire of the ground floor for three days a week.  A working group has been set up to look at future use, aware that the Borough is renovating the adjacent hostel accommodation and aware of the frequent requests that come from local people and groups to make use of the versatile and robust facilities – yes, room for birthday parties, five-a-side football, indoor hockey, toddlers’ play group and so much else. 

# The roof, the roof, the roof – we say it three times because we have addressed its leakiness in three phases.  2020 has been the Chancel phase, the third and final phase, and in this phase we are also removing the grim polycarbonate covering on our glorious stained glass windows in the chancel. All the preliminaries have been undertaken, faculty approval obtained, tenders in place and assessed and fundraising set in motion. The work on the roof will begin in 2021.   Already, some stalwart charitable trusts have responded to requests for support. We are particularly grateful to Viridor and the Heritage Lottery who have helped us in each of the three phases.  Special thanks are due to Caroline Leveaux who has headed up our fundraising efforts at every stage – not just a dream maker but a dream deliverer! 

# There is another dream deliverer to thank in 2020 – Toby Dare. Toby gave his exceptional expertise and copious amount of time to enable us to replace our dodgy lighting in the church. Our 1975 once state-of-the -art lighting was expensive and dangerous (yes, it was ‘condemned’ by the EU in 2020 but you will understand we took advantage of some legal wriggle room!)  We now have safe, energy efficient, flexible lighting, perfectly suited for the nave and chancel. Toby, we now have a beautifully lit church - thank you. Thanks also the late Ruth Bradbury.  Ruth remembered St Leonard’s in her will, and it has been a Godsend to us as we take on these costly but essential tasks. 

# Regarding the churchyard, we are very pleased with the way our first year of partnership with Lambeth Landscapes has worked out.  Our link with Ruth Davies has been excellent and there is fruitful collaboration with Ali Angus and Eco Church.  Not only does the churchyard look well cared for - thank you John Brown and Phil Heeley - it also has lots of things to attract interest and make for conversation. The churchyard has been a haven for many during the lockdowns. No news to report on the massive Turkey Oak tree and the Oak 



Processionary Moths it harbours.  However, that’s a worry for Lambeth Landscapes rather than your churchwardens! 

# Two years ago, a new sound system was installed. It does the job beautifully, but this year the system moved up a gear to make the most of the glorious sound from our Covid restricted choir and ensure a good sound quality for our growing number of people joining our Sunday worship on YouTube.  Who would have thought we could broadcast worship from St Leonard’s far and wide? Nick Turner is the man who led the way, sourcing user-friendly equipment for the task and ensuring Sunday by Sunday streaming. In addition, we are able to stream weddings and funerals, something that has proved immensely important given the restriction on the numbers who can attend in person.  Thank you, Nick and team.  Not everyone is adept at YouTubing and Zooming so we are grateful to Tesco Bags of Hope for a small grant to enable the purchase of five tablets plus Wi-Fi access to loan out to those keen to master the web learning curve. 

# We have a very special organ at St Leonard’s – designed and built by J W Walker in 1979 after the devastating fire in 1975. In 2020 we decided to put its maintenance (and its voicing*) in the hands of Harrison & Harrison, a company based in Durham but working to much acclaim across the globe.  They maintain the organs for York Minister, Westminster Abbey, the Albert Hall – and now St Leonard’s, Streatham. 

# During 2020 Sue and Phil Heeley have continued their commitment as assistant churchwardens.  Sue and Phil keep a diary of all the health and safety and regulatory tasks to which a public building must conform.  They arrange the many visits required for this, opening and closing the church to enable people to check the fire extinguishers, the lightening conductor, the heating system, the emergency lighting, the piano, the clock, the electrical appliances, the pests (relax, there aren’t any... although we keep a very close watch for moths because they cause mayhem in the organ), the crack displacement telltales,  as well as the engineers who are always wanting to tweak the telephone mast in the spire! These behind the scene tasks are hugely important and special thanks are due to Sue and Phil for managing this work on to the benefit of us all. 

# The various lockdowns have played havoc with the many rotas that are vital to the life of St Leonard’s, but some continue and have done so throughout: Churchwatch continues on Mondays and Wednesdays. Eileen, our part-time administrator, has taken on the rotas for intercessors and readers, and we will need twice the number of sidespeople given the additional services on a 



Sunday.  The tasks for sidespeople have increased to take account of all the necessary Covid precautions. Ian Pratt has marshalled the tellers to ensure the money that goes in the plate is Covid safe and ready for banking. However, despite all the disruption to usual church life, there are lots of new faces in church so we are confident that help will be found as we negotiate the new normal.  One of the rotas that never really got going was church cleaning and with the splendid toilets and kitchen it was clear that cleaning couldn’t be shirked.  So in 2020 we appointed a cleaner, Patricia, and the difference she has made is much appreciated. 

# The list of people who contribute to the happy ship of St Leonard’s are far too many to name – but we are grateful for the part you play and for the commitment people have shown throughout this distressing year. On your behalf we express profound gratitude to our Rector, the Rev’d Canon Anna Norman-Walker, who has discerned the way through this pandemic year with imagination, energy, skill and good humour. We have surely benefitted in this distressing year from Anna’s inspired leadership. Thank you Anna, and also thanks to Arthur and family for all you have given to St Leonard’s and to Streatham over the past tough and often distressing year.

disclosure5 in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustee5 conceming any such
matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an
audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

In connection with my examination. no matter has come to my attention:
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
to keep accounting records in accordance wth section 130 of the Act,. and
