Chairman’s Report - Neil Finch
At the end of another season it’s fitting to recognise all those who make it possible for a club the size of Bedwell Rangers to function and provide such an important resource to so many people in our community.
We have a great group of trustees who are committed and professional in everything they do. Without the vital roles they perform behind the scenes so well there would be no club. I’d like to give a special mention to Anna who took on the essential role of Club Secretary at the beginning of the season and has quietly and efficiently made a seamless transition.
A huge thank you to all the team officials associated with the club; their selfless dedication to their teams is so often underestimated as is the long term effect they have on the young people under their care. I know they get huge satisfaction and enjoyment from what they do but that doesn’t mean everyone shouldn’t appreciate the time and effort they put into doing the very best they can.
In many ways this was a very challenging season. The match day behaviour of adults who should know better is a problem that doesn’t appear to be going away and if anything we had more issues this season than in previous seasons. Thankfully, the vast majority of poor behaviour was from opposition coaches and parents but in any case it results in us having to deal with negative things when our time would be much better spent providing positive outcomes for the young people that we are here for.
Another ongoing concern, again related to adults, is the unrealistic and unbeneficial expectations placed on children, particularly regarding ability and results. We want all our teams to be as competitive as they can possibly be when they reach the age when competitive football begins. Until then we must start educating coaches, parents and players that development and enjoyment is the main priority. Even at the younger age groups results can of course be an indication of progress and improvement but this should not be at the cost of not developing good all round players. If we prioritise the development of players then good results will naturally follow, even at the younger ages.
It has also been concerning to see a growing number of young players being moved from team to team, often to so-called elite teams that sell themselves as academy’s, in pursuit of unrealistic goals. Too often, parents overestimate their child’s abilities, leading to decisions that ultimately hinder enjoyment and long-term participation in the game. While we absolutely support players moving on when it aligns with their development and ability, the trend of very young players moving on prematurely is troubling. We often hear stories of regret from those who have left Bedwell Rangers, only to find the experience less enjoyable elsewhere, or worse, to see the child lose interest in the game altogether.
Going forward one of our biggest challenges is going to be the rising costs of doing what we do and maintaining our ethos of keeping our fees as low as possible so football is affordable for everyone. The partnership we have agreed with The St John Henry Newman School for the use of the brand new 3g pitch will allow us to provide a better facility for many of our teams but we must use this as an opportunity to improve our offer to the community and try and bring new blood into the club.
Fundraising is another area that needs renewed focus. This past year has been particularly difficult, and if we cannot improve our fundraising efforts and increase participation, the modest 10% fee increase proposed for next season (despite expecting this to result in a significant
loss) will not be sustainable and a much larger increase will be necessary in the following year. With all the challenges we have faced and will face in the future it should never overshadow what an amazing football club we are all part of. Whenever I am at meetings, training sessions or matches, either working with or watching all the fantastic people involved I have immense pride and admiration in Bedwell Rangers. If you take a step back and just watch you will see that the smiles and the joy on the faces of the players, parents and official far outweigh anything negative that we may encounter.
I can’t finish without mentioning a couple of people who are stepping away from their roles and will be a huge loss to the club and to me personally. Nicky George became a trustee the same year I became Chairman and very soon agreed to become the Vice Chair. Nicky has always been a voice of reason, someone I could ask for advice, run my thoughts by or turn to for an opinion. The best thing about working with Nicky was that even if we disagreed it always felt as though the others opinion was respected and whatever way we decided to go once the decision was made it was fully supported. Nicky, has spent several years as the Club Welfare Officer and has also been involved in pretty much every club activity, event and function since she arrived. Nicky will remain involved and is going to take on the role of Junior Coach Coordinator; Nicky founded the current Junior Coaches programme and I know she is keen to drive it forward into bigger and better things,
Gary Dempsey is Bedwell Rangers. I think it’s fair to say that if it wasn’t for Gary it’s likely there would be no Bedwell Rangers and the club would have gone the way of many other of the towns historic grassroots football clubs and disappeared. Taking over as Chairman from Gary seven years ago, following his recommendation, was a huge honour for me and even bigger shoes to fill. Since then as well as performing the dual roles of Treasurer and Registration Officer, Gary has continued to oversee everything that goes on at the club. Gary will forever be one of, if not the, most important person in the history of the football club.
Looking forward to next season I’m excited at the prospect of having some new trustees come on board and I personally intend to have renewed drive to take the club forward.
To everyone who has contributed to another year at Bedwell Rangers; thank you. Have a great summer and come back ready to continue making a difference in the lives of the amazing young people at the club.
Club Secretary Report - Anna Williams
I would like to start by thanking the Trustees, coaches and parent volunteers for all their hard work over the last year and also the children who come along to play football and have fun which is why we all do what we do.
I would like to say thank you to everyone for all the support and patience with me as it was my first season in this at the Club, and I am still learning and finding my feet. Special thanks to all the Trustees who did help me a lot and made me feel welcomed.
We have started the season with over 50 teams and over 600 registered players. Mid-season we launched 3 new teams (U7 Girls Phoenix, U7 Boys Ice and U10 Girls Gruffalos). Unfortunately we have also lost a few teams which folded at the end of season (U11 Frankfurt, u11 Leipzig, u12 Dragons and U18 Amazons) with a couple more teams still at risk of folding.
During the autumn/winter months there was spell of the really bad weather (wet/windy) which resulted in many games not being fulfilled or postponed. When the weather settled the season was already approaching the end.
We have a few success stories with our U14 girls Dragons winning their League Cup, U9 Braga, U14 Roma and U18 Jaguars reaching Cup Finals and many more…
Season was challenging, not only for me. There were many behavioural issues, not only happening at the pitches but also at the side-lines. We have incurred a few poor practice concerns from FA, one misconduct charge for unacceptable parental behaviour, 4 send offs, 44 yellow cards including 2 yellow cards for the coaches. This is a record number of cautions in a club long history.
We picked a few fines for the club from leagues for not following the league instructions mainly not filling KO times on time or not returning MCF forms, and mainly from MidHerts though we had only 5 teams in the league. I will start affiliate teams soon so if there are any changes in intentions which I am not aware of yet, please e-mail me or send me a message on Whatsapp.
Thanks again for this season and good luck for the next.
CLUB WELFARE OFFICER REPORT - Nicky George
This report comes with mixed emotions as it will be my last one as a trustee and CWO of Bedwell Rangers FC. Because of this, I dug out my very first AGM report from 2019 to reflect on the role…
In fairness, it is a very similar picture! I did talk about behaviour back then and it is still front and centre now. It is a hugely critical area to Herts FA as well and sometimes the sidelines are not a pleasant place to be – and this is me talking as an adult. Consider how a child feels. We all have a huge responsibility to maintain our standards. No one is perfect, but sadly We've had a number of issues this year from the sidelines, but also, from our officials. A critical role for the CWO is to ensure that we have qualified volunteers. We all sign up to codes of practice. We all go on the safeguarding course. Majority of us have completed our Introduction to Coaching. Every training session mentions how we conduct ourselves in front of children. All that I ask is that you continue to focus on this. It is the worst job for us as trustees to challenge or investigate our officials.
I’ve mentioned qualifications. This has changed significantly over the years, where before, you needed a simple DBS and off you went! Now you need DBS, Safeguarding and First Aid, along with at least one person with a Level 1 qualification. Sometimes I wonder if the FA enjoy making it harder for us to find volunteers, but ultimately, it does mean that the quality of the training we give the children is much better, so I thank each of you who have got the qualifications. I’m aware that the trustees hope to support our volunteers further with this development of our Coaches.
A huge part of the role is the DBS verifications. I did a bit of research and I reckon I’ve completed just under 500 DBS applications in my tenure. At one point, it was my favourite part of the job as it meant I got to meet everyone, but with one year completing 89 DBS’s the
novelty wore off! However, as of 3rd June, this all changes and it all goes through with self verification. New guidance to follow, but it takes the heat off a very manual process for the new CWO.
Once again, we have achieved 3 star accreditation. So when we are chasing you for things, this is why. A super important achievement with the FA and opens the door to certain initiatives, such as the Thriving Clubs programme. This has been lead, once again by Graham Storey. Thank you Graham.
I’d like to thank all the trustees for their support, I’ve worked with some fabulous people who I respect hugely. However, I did want to give a particular shout out to Neil. Dedicated to Bedwell to the core… few people realise how much he does for this club, but for me, he was my constant sounding board, voice of reason and now lifelong friend. Please give him your support, he’s going to be lost without me.
I’m not completely disappearing. I’ll still coach my son’s team and will be focussing on the junior coaches to see if we can formalise how we develop our young coaches. My final sign off with a big shout out to our volunteers. You are brilliant and the impact you have on our community is nothing short of fabulous.
We couldn’t do it without you. THANK YOU.
Media and Brand Officer – Jon Pace
It’s been an interesting season. As a club, we decided that there was scope to make this role, and hopefully it has been worthwhile. It’s been a three-pronged role this year, trying to improve communication internally within the club, increasing our exposure outside the club via both social media and local newspapers, and looking for products that help raise the profile of the club.
Internally, we have tried to press home how to make contact with officials, but on top of this, we’ve tried to make contacting opposition teams with venue details easier with Infographics that give all the relevant venue details and rules. This is something we want to take further and have a central hub with all relevant details in, but this is a time-consuming piece of work.
We have also tried to liaise more with our coaches, with Q and A sessions, and questionnaires. It’s a hard job to balance 120+ coaches who all have different and quite often contradicting ideas, but hopefully now they realise that their voice is important to us. Externally, we have managed to get a couple of stories in the local newspaper, and we are continuing to try and put more content on social media. Again, there are constraints as to what we can post, but it’s always good when we get parents and coaches working together on this.
We’ve also continued to branch out into Bedwell Rangers Merchandise. We have produced umbrellas, bobble hats, key rings, and towels in recent years, and have now added ‘grip’ socks to our range, which seems to be a universally popular idea. Trying to find trends like this where we can bring money into the club, whilst still providing goods to our members cheaper than they can buy on the open market, is key as it promotes the club in a positive light and gives our players and supporters value for money.
On a personal note, I would like to thank both Gary Dempsey and Nicky George for the years of service they have put into the club in their various roles. From firsthand experience, I know the positive influence they’ve had on the club.
Head of Girl's – Tinotenda Chatindo
This season has been a valuable learning experience for me as Head of the Girls Team, and overall, I’m pleased to say it’s been a good year for the girls’ section.
At the beginning of the season, I made a real effort to attend the first training sessions for as many teams as possible. It was important to me to get to know the coaches, players, and parents early on and to understand each team’s dynamics from the outset. It was a great opportunity to show support and to build relationships that I hope will continue to grow.
One area I’ve been particularly able to assist in has been referee support. I’ve helped source referees when needed, and I hope to continue doing this into the next season to make sure our games are well-managed and fair for all involved.
Like every season, we’ve had a few blips along the way. There were a few issues within some of the girls’ teams, but I’ve spoken directly with the coaches and tried to provide help and support in resolving these matters in a peaceful and constructive way. I want to thank the coaches for their patience and willingness to work through these challenges together.
As this is my first year in the role, I’m still learning. I continue to lean on fellow trustees and especially Neil for their guidance and support. Their input has been invaluable, and I’m hoping to build on what I’ve learned this year so that I can offer even more help and leadership in the next season.
I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the players for their enthusiasm, hard work, and commitment throughout the season. To the parents, thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and involvement , it truly makes a difference to the success and enjoyment of our teams.
To summarise, it’s been a positive year overall. The girls' section continues to grow and thrive, and I’m proud of the dedication shown by everyone involved; coaches, parents, players, and volunteers. With continued collaboration and support, I’m confident that next season will be even stronger.
– Kit and Equipment Officer Warren Kennedy
Another exciting season has come to a close.
KIT:
The club have agreed to extend our agreement with www.kcsportsteamwear.co.uk to supply us kits via Umbro.
We are currently in a good state with all shirts/shorts and socks in the hands of Bedwell Rangers FC to virtually complete all new and replacement team kits.
Please note, all players kits and official kits must only be ordered via myself and no direct orders will be honoured by KC Sports.
EQUIPMENT:
We have selected to use one equipment supplier www.networldsports.co.uk which offers us extremely good
terms and a constant supplier of stocked items. This agreement will stay in place for the foreseeable future.
- Treasurers Report Gary Dempsey
Once again an extremely busy season and managing an extremely busy job and family life has been challenging. Again, my thanks go to all trustees for ensuring that I have the correct documentation to pay all invoices. Special thanks goes to Sharon who ensures that referee fees are checked and then Sharon checks all my errors before we complete our payments.
Last years budget forecast a deficit of £17.5K. However, we managed to fulfill all of our obligations and ensure that all kit was kept up to the high standards set by our kit officer, Warren Kennedy.
Whilst setting a budget for 2025-26 the trustees expect that we will use up to £20K in reserves in the coming season and to ensure that we keep our loses to an absolute minimum we will have to increase subscriptions across the board by 10% for all teams.
The club has run no social events this year, running such events is a fundamental part of the success of the club. Events, are designed to be affordable, fun and brings families together. We seem to have lost one of the key building blocks of the club. The trustees must be supported when an event is being run. We would normally bring in £5K a year in funds. This year it had been less than £300.
Fines – This season has seen a dramatic increase in players fines. The club rule is simply, if a player, manager or spectator incurs an FA fine they have to pay it. This season we received 48 FA fines. One of which related to a serious FA charge for an U7 team!
Going forward I understand more teams want to join the Mid Herts League. This league will fine a squad for the most trivial of reasons and we were fined a total of £320. Every single fine was avoidable and managers need to accept their responsibility to the league and ensure results are submitted on time, matches are confirmed, referees are notified and teams must turn up to games. All fines take time to process, we don’t have time to process the fines, it is unfair and we are unpaid volunteers doing massive amounts of admin.

AGM – Sponsorship Officer Report
June 2025
Another exciting season has ended which saw Bedwell Rangers FC sponsorship partners continue to support.
We exit 2024/25 season with a total of 27 active sponsors.
It should be noted that the entire club benefits from any sponsorship support received and not just the team carrying the sponsors logo; therefore, if you are a manager of a squad that is unsponsored, I urge you to assign yourself a goal of identifying and obtaining a sponsor (2 or 3 years) for the coming season. It should be the collective goal of the entire club to have all teams/squads at least assigned to a single sponsor.
Enjoy the summer, and please ensure that any interested party who are looking to support and sponsor a real grass root team are directed for my attention.
Best Regards
Sponsorship Officer - Chris Budden

Minutes Secretary – Joga Shoker
This has been my first year as part of Bedwell rangers, and being the minutes secretary for Bedwell Rangers Football Club has been an incredibly rewarding experience, far more enjoyable than I ever anticipated. From the very first meeting, I've found a real sense of purpose in contributing to the smooth running of a club that means so much to the community. It's not just about jotting down notes; it's about capturing the essence of our discussions, ensuring every voice is heard, and seeing our plans come to fruition on the pitch and behind the scenes. The camaraderie among the committee members, the coaches, and the parents has made every session a pleasure, transforming what could be a chore into a genuinely fulfilling part of my role.
What I've really enjoyed connecting to the club's journey and its successes, big or small. Whether it's seeing new equipment purchased, fundraising targets smashed, or the teams celebrating victories, knowing I played a small part in documenting those moments of progress is incredibly satisfying. It's a privilege to be part of such a passionate group dedicated to fostering a love for football in our young players, and I genuinely look forward to continuing my contributions.
Fixtures and Pitch Co-Ordinator – Garry Worton
I would like to start with a thanks to all Managers/Coaches who over the course of the season have been fantastic in their understanding. The engagement with all coaches around weekend matches has worked well where we have setup WhatsApp groups which enable them to organize anything from picking up keys to open and closing facilities.
I would like to think in terms of the weather conditions we suffered during the 2023/24 season, the current season has been more straight forward, and teams have not had too much disruption to their schedules.
Council Pitches
During the later stages of the current season, we started to use the council parks more. But like last season this was not straight forward. Where we had hoped to continue using an online portal to make such bookings which was allot easier, we went back to having to request fixtures by email and then awaiting confirmation. The council have not helped where they will not open any pavilions which would enable teams to use the changing rooms and toilets at the parks, and where teams need to continue to provide any supporting equipment. This is something we have now registered a compliant with.
Everyone Active and the council.
Coming to the end of the season we did have a few home fixtures arranged where unfortunately due to the formats we needed to make use of the parks, and this required the club to purchase more nets. This will help us come the new season should we encounter any issues with any of our current venues. In the last few days in starting to prepare for the new season I have been informed by Everyone Active that Meadway park will be rested next season. This will mean that throughout Stevenage there will be only 3 parks available for all teams which will be Ridlins/ Shelphalbury and Peartree.
Partner Schools
The biggest challenge in organizing pitches across our partner venues at schools is the accessibility to Senior pitches. We still only have the one senior pitch at Marriotts which on certain weekends could have several teams using it. This is something we do need to look at addressing moving forward.
The engagement with all our partner schools has worked well and we would like to say a big thanks to them all. Our relationship with Marriotts/ Noble/ Giles/ Woolenwick/Round Diamond and Barclays is especially important for the club. We need to always remember that we need to respect this partnership with the schools as without their support our roles would be very difficult.
All teams will see over the summer the nets at Marriotts, Nobel being replaced, and we are working closely especially with Marriotts on keeping the maintenance across the pitches and equipment at a higher standard. This will see all rear bars and pegs replaced. We are also looking to purchase a storage container which we will be for our sole use to store equipment. In addition, the club have informed Marriotts about important repairs which are needed to any of the goal areas on specific pitches.
Summary
Looking forward to the upcoming season we are on the look out to not only strengthen these relationships with the schools but also look at widening the number of facilities we use. The future especially looks bright we use going into partnership with John Henry Newman school where under the agreement in the new season we will have use of their new 3G pitch during one weekday and weekends. More details on when the facilities will start to become available will follow.

The below information is a summary on the fundraising and events throughout the 2024/25
2024 September 14[th] - Band Night.
Unfortunately, this event was cancelled due to poor ticket sales.
November 2nd – Halloween party
Halloween parties in previous years have been a great success and this once one was no different. With Bedwell players up to U11’s invited to come along and participate in with the Halloween games, activities and celebrations. Another perfect opportunity for the younger Bedwell teams to come together during an afternoon. With refreshments all added to the atmosphere, this event was packed full as the kids and adults joined in on the fun, and the pictures and feedback was amazing. This event generated valuable funds into the club, but we also raised an amazing £160.41 for the Antibullying alliance.
December 1st – Santa Walk - unfortunately this event was cancelled due to low numbers registering to take part.
December 16th – Bouncing back to Gravity for another year of fun for all the players of Bedwell, aclub favourite event. This is an opportunity to get together prior to the Christmas back. Despite slightly lower number attending than previous year, the event well attended, and the players have an amazing time unleashing energy bouncing with teammates and other teams in Bedwell. The hotdogs and fizzy pop also seem to be a winning snack cooling off after each session.
2025
June 7th – Presentation Awards day
With Nobel school hosting our Presentation Day for a third year, it was another great successful event. Great to see teams receiving their medals and trophies following the season activities. Well done to everyone that contributed to the planning, set up, and to the coaches, players and parent for there participation through the day.
The feel of the day is creating space an environment to allow coaches, players, parents and supporters of the club to celebration the season and purchase club Merchandise, food and drink, take pictures and enjoy the outdoor area before and after their award sessions. This event generated funds into the club fundraising pot, which was well received by the club, and we appreciated everyone’s support and contribution who attended on the day.
It's fair to say that this season fundraising has not been as successful as previous years. There are a number of contributing factors, venue availability volunteer to support, but the main points are, we reached out to the wider club to ask what types of events people would attend and unfortunatelyboth those events were cancelled due to poor attendance. This is disappointing, but we encourage to provide variety whilst host our traditional events we know are well attended and support the club
With the ever-increasing running costs the club are dealing with, it makes it so important that we maximise efforts across the whole club to keep our fees as competitive as possible. Your support in communicating our events and encouraging attendance is essential.
We are looking forward to the nest season events already and two keys date so far are the 13[th] September and 15th November, these will for a quiz night and race night, so please watch out for further communication on this in the coming weeks.
We also several independent donations, gifts and prises from individuals, companies, and our sponsors. All contributing to these events throughout the year. We thank everyone for this continued support to the club. In addition, our gift aid fund has made a difference, but we can still do more on this front. I would urge all our officials to encourage anyone registering with the club to select, as this additional contribution will be amazing.
Thank you to everyone who has helped with Bedwells fundraising activities and events over the past year. From those organising or attending your support, enthusiasm and dedication has contributed to the club. As always, if you or know anyone that is interested in supporting any of the fund-raising events orhave any suggestions for events. please contact myself or any trustee.
Independent Examiner’s Report
Report to the trustees and members of Bedwell Rangers Football Club – Charity Number 1131242 for the year ended 31 May 2025 which are set out on pages 1 to 19.
Respective responsibilities of officers and examiners
As the charity’s trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.
It is my responsibility to examine the accounts to ensure that they have been prepared in accordance with general accounting principles and to state whether any matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent examiner’s report
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Club and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as officers concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination and confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and contents of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
