OBJECTS AND PUBLIC BENEFIT
The objects of the Becontree Heath Islamic Society (BHIS) are to:
l. Advance the Islamic faith by maintaining and managing a community
centre and masjid in Barking and Dagenham.
2. Advance education and provide facilities for social welfare and
recreation.
3. Promote other charitable purposes as deternlined by the trustees.
In line with these objectives, BHIS delivers a variety of services and activities
to benefit the public.
ACTIVITIES
Daily Prayers: BHIS is open to the public daily, hosting congregations of
400-500 people for prayers.
Educational Services: BHIS operates a Madrasah for children and
supplementary education for adults during the week and weekends.
Community Engagement: BHIS works with other organisations in
Barking and Dagenham, emphasising interfaith cooperation. A highlight
of ?023 was a virtual interfaith Iftar during Ramadan.

Visitor Centre: Regular monthly visits from adult groups and schools,
helping to foster understanding and combat Islamophobia.
Facility Hire: BHIS offers facilities for Nikah, meetings, and
conferences.
Fundraising: £83,110 was raised through donations and initiatives in
2023, with continuing community support.
VOLUNTEERING
BHIS benefits from a strong volunteer base, contributing services such as
stewarding for prayers and events. Volunteer contributions are estimated to be
worth £52,000 per year.
STRATEGIC REPORT
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Prayer Services: The Masjid is open daily, accommodating around
690,000 visitors annually, with weekly averages of14,000 and Friday
peaks of 700-950. The Friday sennon is delivered in English and other
community languages.
Ramadan and Eid: In Ramadan 2023, BHIS hosted over 45,000
attendees for prayers, provided meals for breaking fast, and held five
congregational prayers on Eid.
Educational Programs: The Madrasah operates with 70 students aged 7-
14, offering essential Islamic education. Staff are DBS-checked, and a
governing committee oversees the program.
Social Welfare and Advice." BHIS Imams offer religious advice on
marriage, family matters, and Islamic finance, with an average of 12 daily
contacts. Legal advice is also provided by volunteer barristers and
solicitors.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Women's Groups: BHIS supports over five female user groups for
different communities.
Interfaith Work: BHIS actively participates in local interfaith forums
and works with organisations to combat Islamophobia and promote
community cohesion.
Anti-Racism Initiatives: BHIS supports campaigns against racism and
Islamophobia, collaborating with local anti-hate groups and supporting
movements like Black Lives Matter.
PREMISES AND SECURITY

Security Measures: BHIS conducts regular risk assessments and
provides 2417 security for the premises, with an increased presence
during high-traffic events like Ramadan and Eid.
Governance and Expansion: BHIS is reviewing staffing and planning a
first-floor extension to increase capacity. Administrative facilities are also
being redeveloped.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Income Sources: BHIS raised £83,11 O through donations, fees, and
fundraising activities in 2023.
Reserves Policy: As of December 31, 2023, BHIS held reserves of
£14,600. A new reserve policy was introduced in 2021 to ensure the
charity can meet operational costs.
Interest-Free Loans.. BHIS has interest-free loans (Qard Hasanah)
totalling £165,900, which are vital for operations, including the purchase
of premises at 798 Green Lane. The loans are repayable within 90 days
upon request.
RISKS AND GOING CONCERN
Reputation and Financial Recovery: BHIS continues to recover from
financial misconduct by trespassers who unlaw￿lIY occupied the
premises from 2015 to 2020. Legal action is ongoing to recover losses.
Going Concern.. Despite challenges, the trustees consider BHIS
financially stable, supported by regular donations and the ability to raise
funds through appeals.
GOVERNANCE AND ADMINISTRATION
Legal Responsibilities: Trustees are responsible for preparing financial
statements in accordance with UK law and accounting standards. The
financial statements for 2023 were approved on August 31, 2023, by:
