Moretonhampstead Sports and Community Centre Limited
Trustees report for year ending December 31[st] 2024
2023 ended well with momentum and enthusiasm in equal measure and at the start of 2024 we looked forward to another good year. Working off the back of a successful 2023, we wanted to continue the engagement initiated with the wider community with a view to further exploring the opportunities to make the best use of our facilities, support existing activities as required and welcome new ones. Wellmoor have been pro-active on this point, identifying members of our community who, for a variety of reasons (financial/social) may encounter difficulties joining a physical activity setting and supporting them with extra finance and/or confidence building strategies to sample what’s on offer on their doorstep. We are grateful for this extra assistance.
Our Charity objective is to provide and maintain the Sports Centre building and playing fields for recreation, amateur sport and other leisure-time activities for the benefit of our community in and around Moretonhampstead. It is always a joy to see activities running and people enjoying the benefits of regular exercise and social interaction.
We are fortunate to have these facilities and they are often the envy of visitors and newcomers to the area. Needless to say, being a volunteer managed and run organisation, things take time to happen and evolve but the groundwork is very well established and there to build on.
We continue to be mindful of the financial constraints on family budgets and the need to balance our running costs and overheads with making access to the Sports Centre sufficiently affordable so as to encourage more participation. With targeted advertising and careful budgeting, it is very pleasing to note that turnover has increased and although costs and overheads have increased, the net result maintains a secure financial position at the end of 2024.
In June, we hosted the MartialArts4Fun 30[th] Anniversary Celebrations which was an amazing fun filled family weekend of camping, activities, BBQ and disco. Everyone agreed that this was a very successful and enjoyable event. Once again thanks to the organisers and volunteers who gave up time to be on duty to ensure the smooth running of the weekend.
Our facilities have also been popular with school groups, training pupils for Duke of Edinburgh awards and it has been fantastic to see the playing field home to an array of overnight hike tents.
Moor Football, held their second Football Fiesta in early September, which proved to be another amazing event, building on the success of 2023, attracting lots of families who all enjoyed the day. The Sports Centre was buzzing with activity and excitement.
Once again, we hosted the hugely popular community fireworks display and bonfire evening in early November. The attendance numbers once again exceeded expectations and in collaboration with Moretonhampstead Swimming Pool, the Fireworks Draw raised money for both organisations . Full credit to our volunteers who worked extremely hard to make the event such a success.
We have been actively looking for community support to promote better use of the tennis courts (coaching?) the bowling green and club house (repurpose?) and to re-design the concrete pad previously occupied by the skate park and bike track (now sadly dismantled on safety grounds). Much depends on the level of demand that can be demonstrated for any given use but we are open to suggestions and offers of help to explore the economic and practical viability of these and take any potential projects forward.
We have also been involved with some environmental sustainability projects. Firstly, the volunteers working with Trees in Time have planted hundreds of saplings around the perimeter of the playing field to restore and strengthen the hedgerows and also some fruit trees to create a community orchard. When we undertake any work to the grounds, we are always mindful of maintaining and enhancing the wildlife corridors and habitats (water and land) that we have been nurturing for many years.
Secondly, we have applied for a Green Business Grant from TDC and hope to qualify for this funding to replace the solar panels on the roof of the Sports Centre building (the original installation is old and no longer efficient). Assuming the bid is successful, this will be another positive step towards the longevity and future viability of the Sports Centre by significantly reducing the energy costs.
This report would not be complete without expressing huge gratitude to our team of volunteers, working alongside the Trustees and Directors of MSACC to keep the doors open and welcome people the Sports Centre on a daily basis.
