These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’s passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread (Leviticus 23:4-6).
The Lord God gave the people of Israel seven festivals. These were times of rest, reflection and celebration. The times of the festivals corresponded with national harvests. The second of these is the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It is so closely related to Passover feast that they are often treated as one. However they are different feasts although they both are celebrated together. Part of the ritual of Passover involves the removal of all products with leaven (another name for yeast) and this corresponds with the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The Pascal Lamb must not be offered with leaven or yeast (Exodus 34:25) so it was always removed by the Passover morning. That is because leaven is a type of sin. We only need little yeast (or leaven) placed into bread dough to cause the whole loaf to rise. This helps give our bread its pleasant taste and texture. That is why it is a good illustration or type of sin because like a sin it may begin little and hardly noticeable but soon it grows and dominates our lives – just like leaven in bread or cakes. It soon spreads and permeates the whole lump. So when Jesus said this is my body making a connection with the bread of the Passover, He was saying that like the Passover bread there was no leaven or sin in Him. By contrast He advised His followers to beware the leaven of the Pharisees and Scribes (Matthew 16:11; Mark 8:15). He did not want and He does not want His followers contaminated with the sin of hypocrisy – which was the leaven of the Pharisees. From time to time it is a good thing to clear out old and redundant things from our lives. As we look ahead into 2025 let us – as it were – ‘spring clean’ our lives of anything that hinders our witness for Him.
The following lists some of the activities of our church in the year that has just passed (2024).
Evangelism: due to the problems we have with our bank account being closed, the door to door has had to be suspended. Hopefully this will be temporary. Our monthly Coffee Morning and Fellowship is still running and provides a venue for relaxed conversation - All Welcome.
Sunday services: again I extend my thanks to Barry K and Martin D who each minister one Sunday per month. We are indebted to both of them for their faithful service and healthful teaching.
Our Thursday Prayer and Bible Study is now studying the Gospel of Luke.
Prophetic Witness: Due to difficulties booking the hall Martin D has decided to move these meetings to Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Baildon. Martin has also handed over future administration and organisation of PWMI to our friend and brother Martin H.
Other churches and Cricket Club: We continue to have a loose fellowship with ‘New Life Christian Fellowship’ which continues to use our halls to conduct their meetings.
Due to Pastor Vojtech’s illness ‘Krestanska Misia Imanuel’ has not been using our halls. I am still in contact with Stefan (church member and translator) who is hopeful the church will once again use our halls once Pastor Vojtech’s health improves.
During the summer, Martin and Stella D have kept in touch with the Cricket Club.
Conference and other special meetings: For the second time (in as many years), Muff Field was not represented at the June Wesleyan Reform Conference 2024. Also due to other previous family commitments I was unable to attend the Ministers and Pastors Group Annual Retreat.
Bank account: I am happy and somewhat relieved to report that our account with Barclays Bank has been restored. It will be a great relief for me to no longer have to carry cash (from our church collection and gifts, etc.) to the Halifax branch each month. I should like to express my gratitude to David S and his sister Margret K for resolving this. However, we were not alone, many churches have faced similar difficulties because of Barclays change of policy.
Maintenance and repair of the church manse has proved to be very time consuming and quite expensive. Thankfully, we have new tenants and I can now rely on the estate agents to manage this property.
Church outings: on 27 June 2024 we visited Crag House Farm at Cookridge. This is the headquarters of the Christian charity, ‘Caring For Life’. We had a hearty lunch and then went for a leisurely walk around the extensive grounds. Some even managed some shopping and purchased plants from the charity’s garden centre.
