Annual Report of the Parochial Church Council for the year ended 31st December, 2024

Administrative information

The parish consists of two churches; St Peter, Nevendon, in the north of the parish and St Gabriel, Pitsea in the south. It is part of the Deanery of Basildon in the Diocese of Chelmsford, Essex, within the Church of England. The correspondence address is The Rectory, Rectory Road, Pitsea, Essex, SS13 2AA.

The Parochial Church Council is a charity registered with the Charity Commission (no. 1131085). The Parochial Church Council members who have served from 28[th] April, 2024 until the date this report was approved are:

Structure, governance, and management

The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. All church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election.

Objectives and activities

The Pitsea with Nevendon PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with incumbent, in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has maintenance responsibilities for the Church Youth and Community Centre of St Gabriel,s, and Nevendon Community Hall at St Peter’s.

Attendance

The PCC met regularly during the year with very good attendance at each meeting.

Electoral Roll:

The Parish Electoral Roll stands at 80 persons. It will be renewed in the coming year.

The data held on the roll is treated as confidential and the only items published are a list of names.

Rector’s Report

First of all, this shall be my last Rector’s Report, as I shall be retiring and leaving the Parish in July. I will report a bit on 2025 as well – as I will not be at next year’s APCM!

I have been the Rector of this Parish for 15 years, and I have witnessed lots of changes in the Church and in the World, but as I said in my first report for 2010: “I am looking forward ... as we continue to try to be followers of Jesus and to spread the Good News of his love to a world that needs to hear it.” My view has not changed – and through all that we do here – I am still committed to proclaiming the Gospel.

Licensed Lay Minister : One of the most important events of 2024 was on the 13[th] July when Jacqui Moss was admitted as a Reader and Licensed as a Lay Minister in Chelmsford Cathedral. It has been a joy to have an assistant minister in the Parish (the last one was nearly 10 years ago) and congratulations to Jacqui who has worked really hard at the training over a number of years and is growing in confidence with preaching and leading services.

Regular Pattern of Services : Having established a post-COVID pattern of services in 2023, we needed to change it once again in 2024, as the Bishop pronounced that all COVID-safe practices should stop and that we would return to ‘Normal’ – especially at Holy Communion!

So, on a Sunday at St. Gabriel ’s:

9.30am for Morning Prayer in St. Michael’s Chapel. During Lent we used the Book of
Common Prayer , owning to its more penitential stance;
11.15am 1[st] and 3[rd] Sundays for Holy Communion (followed by refreshments in St. Gabriel’s Centre – thanks to Sue Bell);

2[nd] Sunday Parade Service with Pitsea St. Michael Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, and

4[th] Sunday “For All the Church Family” with Holy Baptism ;

6.30pm 1[st] and 3[rd] Sundays for Evening Prayer (live streamed on Zoom in St. Michael’s Chapel for the benefit of those who have been unable to attend a service during the day), and
2[nd] Sunday Holy Communion and 4[th] Sunday Holy Communion, with a Celebration of Wholeness and Healing .

(The evening services will be discontinued from June 2025 to prepare for cover during the interregnum).

and on a Sunday afternoon at St. Peter ’s:

3pm Holy Communion (followed by refreshments in Nevendon Community Hall - thanks to Cheryl Hammond;

and finally

5[th] Sunday – which occurs four times a year, we use The Book of Common Prayer for services in both Churches.

We continue to live-stream our main morning service from St. Gabriel’s – and there are still a few who tune in live and more who watch it later on “catch up”. I am very grateful to Lydia who continues to do the live streaming and monitor our YouTube channel. Lydia recently achieved Basildon Volunteer of the Year 2024 mainly because of her work in our Church and sitting on the Young Essex Assembly.

Thanks also to our Bible readers and prayer leaders: Chris , Doreen , Jacqui , Ingrid , Simon, Sue, Norman , Lydia , Salomë , Pat and Sarah ; and those who have volunteered to read on the spot when asked!

Our weekday activities have continued well. The Monday Bible Study Group has been watching episodes of “The Chosen” for discussion about Jesus in the Gospel, and we recently arranged a trip to the cinema to see the first two episodes of Series 5. (If you have not yet discovered “The Chosen”,

I can thoroughly recommend it, as it is accurate to the Gospel and all the poetic licence scenes are entirely plausible!)

The Parish Communion service in St. Peter’s Church every Tuesday morning continues (except during school holidays), and the ‘Midweek Reflection’ remains on Thursdays on Zoom, while there is still a request for an online service during the week.

On Fridays I take Communion to those who are housebound or are having difficulty getting to Church.

Confirmation: Recently, there was a Basildon Deanery Confirmation service at St. Andrew’s Basildon, presided over by the Bishop of Bradwell, the Rt. Revd. Adam Atkinson. Confirmed from our Parish were: Paul Ellaway , Joel Erogun , Deborah & Oskar Kessler , David Mensah and

Gemma & Marie Saunders .

Our main Festivals of the year at Easter, Harvest and Christmas were once again blessed by the choir that Norman put together for those occasions.

Also, and extra special mention must go to Emily Marlton (supported by her family) for raising many thousands of pounds for children’s works – especially the Children’s Society and Noah’s ark Nursery in Machakos!

My family has been my most constant source of support in the Parish, and (of course) they will be accompanying me into retirement, when I take up the ‘House-for-Service’ post at St. Giles Letterston in St. David’s Diocese in the Church in Wales. Sarah for support, encouragement, belief, and for Coordinating St. Gabriel’s Youth and Community Centre for years; Lydia for her live streaming work in Church and regular attendance; Miriam (now settled in Ipswich); Isaac for drumming in the Law Band (currently working on a Master’s Degree in York); Salomë currently working with Fellowship Afloat Charitable Trust ; and Reuben for playing guitar with his Dad (and finishing ‘A’ levels at Sixth Form College this Summer).

Other Activities :

Regular Care Home services in Gifford House and Rectory Lodge are ongoing, and I am hoping that those who help with the services will continue after I leave.

I shall be standing down as Chaplain to Basildon District Scouts and Pitsea St. Michael Scouts , Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts in July, but have really enjoyed being involved for the last 15 years with Church Parades and Christmas services. The Pitsea St. Michael Scout Group is celebrating 100 years this year – join us for the fun day next week!

Occasional Offices : There were thirty-three Holy Baptism services in St. Gabriel’s last year, and five at St. Peter’s. Also, 1 wedding at St. Gabriel’s and 5 at St. Peter’s!

I have taken 6 funerals in St. Gabriel’s during the year, and 4 at St. Peter’s. Also, a further 21 on behalf of the Parish have been conducted at local cemeteries and crematoria. I have also presided at the interment of 11 lots of Ashes. From our own congregations - currently and previously – and their connections, during 2024, we acknowledge the deaths and burials of Norma Harrison , Janet Benton , Pat Francis , Pat Porter , Dave Creamer , Linda Geary , Betty Jeffery , Bryan O’Connell , Keith Gibb , Pat Joy , Mick Elder , Don Sheppard , Bernie Turp and Mavis Feltham . And from 2025: Catherine Marshall , Joan Wheeler , Bernard Larocque , Dot Muschamp and Richard Little . We pray that they all may rest in peace and rise in glory.

The Future:

My last services at St. Peter’s will be on Sunday 29[th] June (St. Peter’s Day – when we celebrate 750 years!) and at St. Gabriel’s on Sunday 6[th] July.

I shall be licensed as ‘House-for-Service’ Cleric in St. Giles Church Letterston, Diocese of St. David’s, Church in Wales on Monday 1[st] September 2025.

May the road rise up to meet you; May the wind be always at your back; May the sun shine warm upon your face; and the rains fall gently upon your fields. And, until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

Treasurer’s Report

The general PCC account shows a deficit for the year of £2,970.47. However, Emily Marlton raised £10,000 for Noah’s Ark Nursery at the end of 2024, but it was paid over to them in 2025. So, the deficit should have been £12,970.47 at the end of the year. But the money that we have spent on repairs to the churches and halls has come from the Fabric Fund (which the current PCC had designated the land sale money to go into the Parish Fabric Fund specifically for those repairs) and not from the general fund!

So, taking these things into account, the General Fund of voluntary giving and Parish expenditure should look like this, if we take the figures above out of the equation:

Gift Aid

The parish continues to make good use of the HMRC Gift Aid Scheme whereby for each £1 donated by an income tax payer registered with the parish we can claim 25p. This may sound a small amount but when multiplied by the generous amounts donated it mounts up to a considerable sum over the year. During the year we received £6970 which helped greatly in meeting our outgoings. I would like to thank all those who take part in the scheme in this parish – it is most appreciated by the PCC.

Fund Raising for charities

During the year money raised for charities amounted to £23,108: £16730 for Noah’s Ark in Kenya, and £6378.00 for the Children’s Society. Amounts distributed were £7266 for Noah’s Ark and £5943 for the Children’s Society. Outstanding amounts to be paid early in 2025. Continuing thanks go to those who regularly contribute to the Children’s Society, and especially to Emily Marlton who continues to raise large amounts for Noah’s Ark.

St Gabriel’s Churchwardens’ Report

2024 has been a year of gradual but continuous recovery from the COVID pandemic, during which we have concentrated on maintenance and repair issues in the main.

Our biggest issue currently is the roof leaking from the light well above the Font. This is a longstanding problem which is still proving problematic to address. We have finally found a firm of roofing specialists that have diagnosed the problem and repairs have been carried out which have been partially successful. Hopefully this will be resolved at the same time when repairs to the guttering are carried out.

There is a continuing problem with the overflow of rain from the roof. A solution was put forward by the roofing company which was forwarded to the Diocese for a faculty consideration. However the Diocese requested an architect’s report on the plan put forward. Last year we had no architect

due to his retirement. However a new architect has been appointed by the PCC and he has put forward a new plan which will put to the Diocese for consideration.

Some minor work is to be carried out to reset some paving stones and to white-line some hazards in the car park.

St Peter’s Churchwardens’ Report

During the year there were only minor repairs to St Peters. These were to the pump room door drainpipe on 30/01/24 and to the lynch gate latch, oiling of said gate and oiling of the north porch on 18/05/24.

Choir

The choir again reformed to rehearse and sing at the Easter, Christmas, and other services during the year and their efforts were very well received. I thank them for their time given and for their enthusiasm and for their joy of church music.

St Gabriel’s Youth and Community Centre

The St. Gabriel’s Youth and Community Centre is now used on the 1[st] and 3[rd] Sunday of the month for refreshments after Church. This has revived the opportunity for people to chat and have fellowship, and also a good chance to talk to new members of the congregation.

During the week the Centre is used regularly by Cubs, Strollercise, Line Dancing, and the Vange Amateur Radio Society. Also, during the year there have been some one-off bookings for our Pitsea Saint Michael’s Scout group. Other parish events were also held as needed.
