Attendance
The PCC met 10 times during the year with very good attendance at each meeting.

Rector’s Report
Regular Pattern of Services:
This past year has seen the Parish establish a normal pattern of services on a Sunday and during week which has been consistent throughout the year. I have also been pleased that we have continued to grow in numbers at all of our services.
So, on a Sunday we begin at St. Gabriel ’s at;
- 9.30am , for Holy Communion (pre-intincted wafer brought to the Communicants), at which we have retained all the COVID-safe protocols – temperatures, masks, social distancing, one-way system, and refraining from singing (as this service has been requested by those who attend and recommended by the Church of England, it will continue as long as it is needed!); then
11.15am 1[st] and 3[rd] Sundays for Holy Communion with the offer of the Chalice, followed by refreshments in St. Gabriel’s Centre (thank you to Sarah for organizing this), and
2[nd] Sunday Parade Service with Pitsea St. Michael Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, and
- 4[th] Sunday “For All the Church Family” with Holy Baptism – which is now firmly back in the main service of the Church!;
In the afternoon, we move to St. Peter ’s for:
3pm Holy Communion with the offer of the Chalice, followed by refreshments in Nevendon Community Hall (thanks to Cheryl for organizing this), and I have been delighted with the amount of congregation crossover with people attending either Church, depending on the time of the service;
and finally in St. Michael’s Chapel
-
6.30pm Evening Prayer live streamed on Zoom for the benefit of those who have been unable to attend a service during the day. (at major festivals Evening Prayer is ‘live’ in St. Gabriel’s or St. Peter’s Churches).
-
5[th] Sunday – which occurs four times a year, we use The Book of Common Prayer for services in both Churches.
We continue to live-stream our main morning service from St. Gabriel’s – and there are still a few who tune in live and more who watch it later on “catch up”. I am very grateful to Lydia who continues to do the live streaming and monitor our YouTube channel. She also keeps Zoom updated, which is appreciated by participants as joining in is possible on Zoom.
Thanks also to our Bible readers and prayer leaders: Chris , Doreen , Jacqui , Ingrid , Norman , Lydia , Salomë , Pat and Sarah ; and those who have volunteered to read on the spot when asked!
During the week, our Bible Study Group meets at lunchtime on a Monday in St. Gabriel’s, and we have done the Pilgrim Course, watched a film on the ‘Turin Shroud’ and are currently studying The Acts of the Apostles. There is a Parish Communion service in St. Peter’s Church every Tuesday morning (except during school holidays). The ‘Midweek Reflection’ remains on Thursdays on Zoom, while there is still a request for an online service during the week.
On Fridays I take Communion to those who are housebound or are having difficulty getting to Church.

Highlights of 2023:
The main highlight of the year for me was the St. Gabriel’s Church Diamond Jubilee in September. The Law Family Banned played in the Centre; we celebrated Ernest Grevatt’s vision for a new church around the Foundation Stone; and we combined our 60[th] Anniversary with our Patronal Festival of St. Michael and All Angels at well attended services over Michaelmas weekend. It was also a joy that our preacher was former Rector Laurie Blaney – the man who had been instrumental in bringing St. Gabriel’s and St. Pater’s together.
This was followed by a Basildon Deanery Confirmation service at St. Gabriel’s, presided over by our new Bishop of Bradwell, the Rt. Revd. Adam Atkinson, who had been Consecrated Bishop in Westminster Abbey on St. Michael’s Day! Confirmed from our Parish were: Hazel & Hosea Bukwirwa , Paul Dicker and Simon Houghton .
As well as the Jubilee, our main Festivals of the year at Easter, Harvest and Christmas were very well attended and enhanced by the choir that Norman put together for those occasions.
THANK YOU:
My very special thanks, as always, goes to the Churchwardens of the Parish: Ingrid , Jacqui , Norma and Tina . Ingrid and Jacqui are standing down this year as their six-year term of office has expired; so too is Norma as she is moving away from the area. Tina has been nominated to serve for a further year!
Thanks also to “Team Gabriel” – Ingrid , Jacqui , Sarah , Chris , Martin , Tom , Sue & Sue – whose help and support has been invaluable for checking people into Church, folding notice and service sheets, (taking temperatures & sanitizing surfaces at the “COVID-safe” service), and assisting at weddings, funerals and the return of Eversley School, Cubs, Beavers, (& Squirrels!) for their Christmas, Easter and Harvest celebrations..
My thanks also goes to the members of the Parochial Church Council: Ingrid , Jacqui, Doreen , Norma , Tina , Dave , Paul , Norman , Sylvia , Sarah , Lin , Betty , and Chris for all their help in running the Parish.
Special thanks to our Treasurer Paul and Secretary Norman , both of whom are standing down this year; and to Emily Marlton (supported by her family) for raising more thousands of pounds for the Parish, the Children’s Society and Noah’s ark Nursery in Machakos!
My family is my most constant source of support. Thank you to Sarah for support, belief, care AND for Coordinating St. Gabriel’s Youth and Community Centre; Lydia for her IT skills, reading in Church and regular attendance; Miriam (now settled in Ipswich); Isaac for drumming in the Law Band (currently finishing his degree in Lampeter); Salomë for reading in Church and performing in Oddments Christian Theatre Company (grateful thanks to all of you who have supported her prayerfully and financially); and Reuben for playing guitar with his Dad (currently at Sixth Form College).
Other Activities:
Regular Care Home services in Gifford House and Rectory Lodge continue.
My work as Chaplain to Basildon District Scouts and Pitsea St. Michael Scouts , Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts continues, and Church Parades throughout the year have been well attended. Also, I was once again delighted that Basildon District Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts (and Squirrels !) came to St. Gabriel’s for their Christmas services.
4
With regard to our Sunday Services:
I have been please that attendance at St. Gabriel’s is now approaching pre-pandemic levels with an average of 52 adults and 9 children over both services.
St. Peter’s is still moving upwards; now averaging 10 adults and (sometimes) 3 children at the afternoon service.
In both Churches, we have had new people joining us during the year and becoming more involved in our worship and weekly activities.
Occasional Offices:
There were twenty-one Holy Baptism services in St. Gabriel’s last year, and seven at St. Peter’s. Also, 2 weddings at St. Gabriel’s and 2 at St. Peter’s!
I have taken 2 funerals in St. Gabriel’s during the year, and 4 at St. Peter’s. Also, a further 13 on behalf of the Parish have been conducted at local cemeteries and crematoria. I have also presided at the interment of 5 lots of Ashes. From our own congregations - currently and previously – and their connections, during 2023, we acknowledge the deaths and burials of Pete Hearl , Anne Thompson , Edna Embleton , Sid Grant , Maria “Me-Me” Chittenden , Baby George Dowuona-Edwards , Kath Ridler , Vicky Nicholls and Kevin Barnes . We pray that they all may rest in peace and rise in glory.
The Future:
This will be my last full year as your Rector before retirement. The Churchwardens and Parochial Church Council members elected at this APCM will be instrumental in preparing the Parish for the Interregnum and writing the new Parish Profile to find a new Rector. (I shall save my farewell speeches until next year!)
We must never lose our focus on being called to be the Body of Christ in Pitsea with Nevendon and to work at proclaiming the Gospel to all whom we contact through the Church. The Bishop gave me the responsibility for the Cure of Souls in the Parish (currently 25,161) – and my thanks to you for supporting me and sharing that responsibility.
I am glad that our two Churches have moved closer together in the last year and I pray that it will continue. However, I am still keen to see the needs and aspirations of our young people and children addressed and hope that the PCC will spend some time looking at that in the coming year.
May the road rise up to meet you; May the wind be always at your back; May the sun shine warm upon your face; and the rains fall gently upon your fields. And, until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
Revd Simon Law (Rector)
Treasurer’s Report
The general PCC account shows a deficit for the year of just over £4,000. This is not because we have overspent on our income – it is simply because we have used existing reserves to pay for work to the buildings. This has been made possible by managing to get Chelmsford Diocese to release the Land Sale money back into the Parish! (Many thanks to Norman for his perseverance!). The Incumbents and PCCs at the time of selling some of the land behind St. Gabriel’s Church: Rev. Laurie Blaney and Rev. Diane Deer – had asked the diocese to look after the money for the repair and maintenance of the Church and Hall. The current PCC has designated the money to go into the Parish Fabric Fund for exactly the same purpose!
5
Nevendon Community Hall and St. Gabriel’s have both been fully open during the last year. The reason for their respective funds appearing to be ‘overdrawn’ is because the expenditure has exceeded the income. Energy costs have increased greatly in the last year.
The Parish has continued to be blessed by sacrificial giving, mainly from St. Gabriel’s Church, and the fundraising for those much less fortunate than us has been astonishing and humbling! We have been able to give away nearly £7,000, which is almost 10% of our total income!
This is a summary of the figures for 2023:
Parochial Church Council (including both Churches and Fees)
| Total Income | £71,158 |
|---|---|
| Total Expenditure | -£75,234 |
| Deficit for the year: | -£4,076 |
| Balances at the end of 2023 | |
| PCC General Fund: | £3,846 |
| Parish Fabric Fund: | £141 ,745 |
| Total | £145,591 |
| General Designated funds: | |
| Nevendon Community Hall | - £739 |
| St. Gabriel’s Centre | -£2 ,865 |
| Total | - £3,604 |
| Restricted Funds: | |
| Land Sale (Transferred to Fabric Fund) | £0 |
| St. Gabriel’s Youth Group | £63 |
| Total | £63 |
| Grand Total: | £142 ,050 |
| + Capital value of buildings | £497 ,919 |
| Total in published accounts: | £639,969 |
Finally, a massive “Thank you” to all who have contributed so sacrificially in the last year, AND to those who have raised money for mission and outreach.
Rev. Simon Law (Rector) Paul Hayden (PCC Treasurer)
Gift Aid
The parish continues to make good use of the HMRC Gift Aid Scheme whereby for each £1 donated by an income tax payer registered with the parish we can claim 25p. This may sound a small amount but when multiplied by the generous amounts donated it mounts up to a considerable sum over the year. During the year we received £6278. Gift Aid has been of tremendous help over the past few years by augmenting the diminished income due to reduced collections and attendees at the services. I would like to thank all those who take part in the scheme in this parish – it is most appreciated by the PCC.

If you would like any information of the scheme please contact Rev Simon Law or myself who will most willing to help

Fund Raising for charities
During the year donations for charities the parish support amounted to over £9100. This amount was made up of £759 for the Turkey earthquake appeal, £405 to the Ukraine appeal, £3075 for Noah’s Ark in Kenya, £2466 for the Childrens’ Society, and £2455 for Oddments Theatre Company. In addition generous donations were made to the parish funds. Thanks are due to Emily Marlton who during the year raised a significant amount of these donations, and continues to do so, and whose support is very much appreciated.

St Gabriel’s Churchwardens’ Report
We would like to start this report by thanking Reverend and Mrs Law for their help and support throughout the last year.
2023 has been a year of gradual but continuous recovery from the COVID pandemic, during which we have concentrated on maintenance and repair issues in the main.
Our biggest issue currently is the roof leaking from the light well above the Font. This is a longstanding problem which is still proving problematic to address. We have finally found a firm of roofing specialists that have diagnosed the problem and repairs have been carried out which have been partially successful. It is not possible to entirely resolve he leak as it is due in part to the design of the roof. To address this the roofers recommended the addition of hoppers at the corners of the roof. These would redirect water more effectively away from the structural beams of the building and would minimize the pooling which occurs around the light well. However, this work requires a faculty which is taking some time to obtain from the Diocese. We are unable to advance any further with repairs until the faculty is forthcoming.
The restoration of the Communion Rail was undertaken during the summer and is now complete.
The addition of a fence and gate adjacent to St Michael’s Chapel, which was planned before the pandemic was able to go ahead during the better weather and is also now complete.
We have had issues with two of the heaters. One in the church itself needed repair and the heater in the church vestry was beyond repair and needed to be replaced. Both these works are now completed.
It has been an honour and indeed a pleasure to have served the Parish over the last years and Jacqui and I would like to offer our support and very best wishes to the incoming Churchwardens.

St Peter’s Churchwardens’ Report

During the year work on repairs and refurbishment to the church and grounds have progressed. A Memorial Seat for Colin Jeffery was installed. Ashes Memorial Boards have been repaired and oiled, and the double porch doors were repaired together with the oiling of the entire porch.
The moss on the Lych Gate has been removed, the gate has been repaired and the whole gate construction has been painted with oil.
Christine Ridler, Norma Simpson Churchwardens
Choir
The choir reformed to rehearse and sing at the Easter and Christmas services during the year and their efforts were very well received. I thank them for their time given and for their enthusiasm for their joy of church music.

Nevendon Community Hall
The hall is currently being used by the AA group on Saturdays. On Thursdays, once a month the Rainbow Trust meet - a group dealing with parents of children with health problems. Also once a month on Thursdays, Myotas (my own time and space), a group dealing with parents of children with autism and other health problems meet.
We are hopeful of more hirers coming along.
Doreen Fairman Hall co-ordinator
St Gabriel’s Youth and Community Centre
The St. Gabriel’s Youth and Community Centre is, post-pandemic, now used on the 1[st] and 3[rd] Sunday of the month for refreshments after Church. This has revived the opportunity for people to chat and have fellowship, and also a good chance to talk to new members of the congregation.
During the week the Centre is used regularly by Cubs, Strollercise, Line Dancing, and the Vange Amateur Radio Society. Also, during the year there have been some one off bookings for our PSM Scouts’ bivouac sleepover and District Cubs & Beavers’ skills days.
Plus, on Christmas Day it was used for refreshments after the Service for some who would otherwise have been on their own; Ukraine Night with Len & Pat Joy; ‘Passover’ Meal on Maundy Thursday; a gig by The Law Family Banned to celebrate St. Gabriel’s Diamond Jubilee; Harvest Supper with Mick Beackon from “Noah’s Ark Nursery” in Machakos, Kenya; and an open-mic “Evening of Christmas Cheer.”
The Centre is being kept clean and tidy by Reuben and me.
Since lockdown there are still fewer users than before. Consequently, the income is less than the expenditure. The greatest expense during the year was the replacement of the boiler for the heating system. However, this has made a huge difference to everyone who uses the Centre!
There are still problems with Grevatt Lodge when it comes to parking. This is something that we need to resolve we can increase the number of users.
