Structure, governance and management
The Parochial Church Council is a corporate body established by the Church of England. The PCC operates under the Parochial Church Council Powers Measure. The PCC is registered as an independent charity, registered number 1130896, in the name of “The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Heworth Christ Church, Diocese of York”.
The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. A local agreement which has been applied is that the members of the PCC serve a 3 year maximum term of office after which they cannot stand for re-election within one year. All Church attendees are encouraged to register on the Church Electoral Roll and stand for election to the PCC.
Heworth Christ Church PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have regard to House of Bishop’s guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults).
The full PCC normally meets 6 times during the year. Because of restrictions due to the Covid situation there were only 3 meetings in 2020.
Objectives and Activities
The Parish of Heworth Christ Church has the following Mission Statement:
At Christ Church our hope is to see The Kingdom of God grow in our communities through Worship, Prayer, Lifestyle and Outreach.
Vision Statement: A Healthy Church- A Growing Church
The members of the PCC are aware of the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit in “The Advancement of Religion for the Public Benefit” and have had regard to it in their administration of the PCC.
Achievements and Performance
Church attendance
There are 105 parishioners on the Church Electoral Roll. There are several people who are ineligible to be on the Electoral Roll (eg Clergy) and others who wish to remain part of the Church family although unable to worship here on a regular basis due to illness or other circumstances.
Because of Covid restrictions the Church was closed or could offer only limited access for much of the year. The attendance figure for October was an average of 13. At this point, Churches were allowed to open subject to strict spacing and movement control, and Christ Church provided the opportunity for quiet prayer. However, throughout the closure period services were streamed from the Vicarage via Facebook every Sunday morning, and most of our worshippers chose to follow this service. Around 30 households followed the service live each week, with larger numbers watching a recording at other times.

Vicarfs Report 2020 For the whole of the world. 2020 will bE the year of Coronavirus. It wa5 identified in 2019, had hit our headlines by january 2020.yet it had complety governed our lives by March. All aspects of our lTrves were affected.and'nomial life. changed beyond recognition. And 50 did'church.. But just HOW did it change.... We couldn't gather in the building. Sunday services moved to being onllne. fewer ¢)pportunities for us to have a rznge of people taklng parr the leading and ddivery of the Sunday morning Service. Our only viable option vos to'live 5rream' directly from the wearage vla Facebook. It cook a good long time to learn how to do this, let alone do it well. But by Chri5tma5 we were able to offer simple vide05 which enabled us to be creative with our'Le$sons And Carols, which thankfvlly gave us the chance to in1Ve more people. Meanwhile a good number of people regularly recorded thefflselves doing readings or leading prayers. which gave us a welcome view of someone we knew, kyJt couldn't see or meet with.we found a way to'break bread. from time to time. which hdped a little to restore a basFc sense of community and cofflmon purpose. Alongside the Sunday stuff. I produced'Touching Base.. which gave a very short focus and for the day on Monday to Thursday in the first instance, and l also produced'DIYWorship' on those days offering a basic format for datly worship, prayer 2nd ble readlng. PCC and other meetings happened via Zoom. a medlum that we'd never realty had to use befo. In and amongst all this. l suspett that many of us became much more farni14ar with latIvelY recent technolo8y. and I hope. we also became mueh more comfortable with IL Very quickty after live streaming on a Sunday It became clear that we were attratting a handtul of people each week whose names we didn't recognise. People who would very probably never walk into the building at 10.30 on a Sunday rnorning were choosing to join in and be part of the weekly live StM. In percentage term5, we have had as many a5 25% of those dtchIng not regularty part of our'churth orbiE'.This in itself ha5 Ven u5 both a challenge and an exciting opportunity 35 we consider seriously just what'church. might need to look Ibke when I rescrlctions are lifted. We're already loong into what we'd need to su¢ce5sffiJlty Ie stream the regular Sunday morning service from church when we can Kdther once again. We couldn'r gather in homes.yet some groups have still found the means to'meet., typically via Zoom. No, it's not ideal, but Its probably the best mean$ ol meeiing together that is available tD us for the time being. and so many people have used great initiative to make things happen: thanks ro you 1.. But ic has mearc thac the regular contsct that is so often made wlth others has not been pos5ible.we addressed some of thi5 bY'buddng. UP those people who we felt might be most vulnerable, and some of those'new. relationships have grown and flourished. People have dtscovered creatyve ways to help others feel loved and included.you could Say thit there are some aspects of lockdown that has helped our sense of community grow rather than dwndle, l 8ues5, and I'm thankful for that and 50 grateful to those who have tirelessly kept people in couch with other5 wherever they could. The thing I've missed the m05t this year is regular and frequent gatherings other people. We've all suffered in that respert and yet 50 many people have worked $0 hard at ereatlng opportuniues for latIOnshIpS to grow and blossom. I been amazed at the way people have shown svch resilience and'fighting spirit. in the face of a really cough and unpreeedented SOCI slwadon. and Ie leamed first hand this year just how difFJcult it C2n be for families to find ways to get together. They do Say thac Communie$ often thrlve when faced real challenge. and I can see how so many people have given 50 much in the Interests of others over these 12 months or sth It¥ so heart warn)ing and ir¢spirin& And we've kept the shlp afloaL even if wekn drrfted into se3s that we never imagined. We've found ways to dg all that we've needed to do. including holding ourAMPIAPCM via Zoom. Regular income ha5 (you might Say inevitably) gone down. but we haven't had to'sell the silver.. and l thank so many of you for continuing to 5UPPOrt this church financialty through the las( year.we will get through this together. I'm convinced. And as we dq we'll work together and discover just where the God who has been with us all the way through this year takes u$ nextl Thanks to everyone as we have together risen to thi5 Immense Challenge antj for the way in which so many have gone'beyond the call of duty. in doing 50.
