Annual

2024
ROMILEY
.iY

Letter from the Vicar
We pray for her new rninistry there to be hugely fruitful.
We also pray that In 2025 we wlll lind the pèrson God is
calling to lead that forwards, as we are totally cornmitted
to sèèing God's love and grace r&a¢h the families ol
Romiley.
Rather than repeating here what you will read In the rost
ol this report, I'd like to take a step back and look at some
ol the trends of what I believe we can seè here and that
God is teaching us and calling us to in the years ahead.
In your hand you are holding a report of a yèar in the life
of St Chads church in Romiley, our attempt to capture
the key things which happened In 2024. It Is good to
remember the highlights and honour all those who have
poured their Ilves into our life together. In the followlng
pagès you will read about children and older people,
worship and outreach, the excitement Of fresh init18tives
and the fruit ol established ministries faithfully serving
people for decades. Things aren't perfect at St Chad$,
we gel things wrong. wè axperlfrnce disappointments, a
church is rnade up of imperfect people. the general
picture l see h&r& Is encouraging and so I want to
commend it to you and invite you to read tt with a
grateful he8rt.
The first trend is growth. We have seen a number ol new
people Come to loln the St Chads family 8nd th8t
Includes some who gave their lives to Jesus In the past
year. Our 9.15am services have grown younger and our
118m servlces seem to grow fuller and fuller, especlally
kids church which has seen substantial grO￿￿L
We rèjoice in that.
There have been two other areas ol growth In 2024 to
celebrate, which are prayer and finances. Our rnonthly
prayer events have found growlng momentum and for
many of us become a core part ol our regular
eng8gernent in the life of our church. Ch8rles Spurgeon
said °whenever God determinès to do a great worK He
first sets His people to pray.. There is always space for
you to join us too, my hèart would be lor the prayer
events to be the biggest event ol the rnonth. I believe
wé'd se8 so much more nèw Illè and Ilvas transformod il
thal were to happen.
2024 wa$ 8 year of significant change In 8 number ol
ways. One highlight was the arrivals of both Katie Wade
and Dave Hill. Having made the laith-fvèlled decision In
2023 to create two new posts, Katie's arrival in April was
a landmark celebration. I wasn't the only one in tears as
K8tle knelt to be licensed into this leadership role only
few metres away from the spot where nearly thirty years
earller she knelt to Commit har li16 to Jesus. The party
aftèrwards was lull of joy and it was wonderful to
welcome back so m8ny friends and lomer mèmbers ol
St Chads from across the years. In the summer Dave
was ordained and he, along with Rachel and the f8mily,
Iready feel very much part ol the life of St Chads. We
celebrate the joy, wisdom, love, faith and much mo
that Katle and D8ve brlng to our church and we
recognise the huge contribution they are making to
growing and strengthening various ar￿$ ol ministry.
You will see from the financial report that 2024 was
very healthy year financially for St Chads, which is a
huge encouragament after the PCC made the decision
in late 2023 to stretch out in faith and prayer for fin8n¢lal
provlslon for néw posts. We arè $0 grateful to you for
your generous giving and investing into God's kingdom.
1 want lo th8nk Jane lor the irn¢redibly hard work she
does in managing and cornmunlcating the state of our
finances to en8ble us to steward the church's money
carefully. We are not here to store up money, but to sow
into God's kingdom. We are also aware that we enjoy the
usè ol excellent fa¢llitles due to the ￿CrIfiC[al generoslty
of previous generations and therefore the PCC is asking
what God is Calling us to invest into now, lor the sake of
future generations ol worshlppers at St Chads. We have
set another faith budg￿ for 2025 and thank ytsu for
faithlullyjoining with us In thls.
In this report you will read about 811 our midweek
ministries and partnershlps as we continue to share the
love ol God with our local community. We acknowledge
the sadness for us, but the win for the kingdom that
Vlcky Reedy was called by God to rnove on from her
paid role to tske on a post at the Hideaw8y.

The second trend Is our commltm&nt to remain a family
amidst the pressure to behave like an institution. As the
church we are God's family. The first ¢ommandment is
to love God, the second to love our neighbour,
relationship with God and others comes first.
The additional burden this places on local churches
grows èver hèavler and l encourage yC>U to pray lor the
leaders ol the CofE lor wisdom and faith to prioritis&
God's mission above propping up the Institution.
Rècent months have been particularfy challenging for
the ColE, which is all the more challenging when played
out In the national news wlth s&nsationalist headlines
which only give a snapshot ol complex sttuations.
We are liwng in a society in which anxiety is rising and
trust is falling. One result of Ihls is thfy tendency to try
and find safety and security in institutions and
structures. Institutions exist 89 s¢allolding to create
dègree of sal&ty and we need structure and law in
fallen world. I notice two things going on in 50Clèty, an
increased distrust and crumbling of ovgr-stretched
broken institutions alongside an increase in those
institutions trying to fix Ihlngs wlth moré rules and
bureaueracy. This impacts us in many ways as a large
church, which is part ol a long-established
denomlnatlon. We need structures and processes, but
our heart is to retain a sense ol family and relatltsnsh1p
and I wanted to share that at th8 start of this report lor
three reasons.
A positive drive lor institutionalism we are seeing In
these days is a longing to hear the volces ol survivors
and victims ol abuse and to cr&ate a safe culture for 811,
free from abuse in any form. The heart of ¢reating safer
churches Is lives transformed by thè lové of Jesus and
sharing his Commitment to empower and protect the
most vulnerable in our communilles. We ar& thoroughly
committed to that and are actwely embracing btsth a
58feguarding culture and the ne¢essary processes
which facilitatè it.
A final theme whlch God was speaklng to us about in
2024 was the kingdom priority ol en98ging in both
evangelism and so¢i81 action. We long to share the
good news of salvation in Jesus with those we rea¢h out
lo every weèk in our communlty. We also long to see
God's love expressed practically in cornbating povèty.
lonellness 8nd other challenges people In our
community face.
Firstly, this report Is a document written for both our
church fami￿ and an official report whlch is sent to the
Chèster diocese and Charity Commissioners as part of
our govern8nce. 111 you're in an offlcé somewhere
rèadlng thls In a pile ol Anglican Church reports - God
bless you, may you h¥ve 8 wonderful day and know
God's love In your lifel So although parts of this report
are by nature 'official', we've tiled to avoid 11 belng too
dry and focused on information. but that's slightly
unavoidable.
I have really wrestled wth the question over tho past
year ol which of these is prima￿ I have come to the
conclusion that a biblieal understanding ol the kingdom
ol God requires a bothland 8ppr08ch. Thesè two
together ara far more powerful than holding them
against one another, we need more ol both.
We absolutely want to see peoplè know Jasus now and
nto eternity, we also know that his love transfortns Ilves
and communities and this often stsrts practically. In this
report you will rèad about both these things and I
delight in that, because both are expres5ion$ ol tha love
of God for Romllay.
Sècondly. two thlngs we celebrate from last year are our
bronze aw8rds lor e¢o-church and accessibility. I'm
ambivalent about awards like these, we're not here to
get plaques on the wall, but to see God's love change
lives. We celebrate thes8 awards as a sign of our
commitment to our values of love. They are merely a
notablé expresslon of our love lor the creation God has
glven us, a recognition ihat climate ¢h8nge has

poor.
The aecessiblllty award highlights our Com￿ltMent lo
show love and value to 811 God's chIld￿n and recognisa
the partlcular efforts we make together to enable those
who have additional needs to encounter hls love and
grow as disciples of Jesus.
So ple8se read on, wlth an open grateful heart and as
well as finding out mora information. Before you re8d
pray and ask God to touch your h88rt wlth thè things
that are on his heart as you read.
Thirdly, we are part of the Churoh of England,
a denomlnatlon which I feel is becorning more
institutional as it experiences decline and dlvislon.

Wardens, report
.Jan Ford &An(*ewGoddaYrl
Tradltlonally, the role of church warden is often seen as
being focussed on looklng after thè building.
Accordingly, this year, wè're pleased to repc>rt that we

As the ingress of raln stoppèd, the floodgates opened in
other ways as not one, but two, new cl&rgy joined us.
It was a joyful occasion as the returning Katlè Wade was
licenced to be our Associate Vicar in Aprll, she has been
such a blessing and we are excited tts see how God
leads Richard and Katie to disciple St Chads. Then, In
Juty, Dave Hill joined us as our curate with his lamlly and
we are 211 enjoying his deeply thought-provoking
semion& We are so blessed to have three Spirit filled
and Insplratlonal preachers.
As the Anglican Parfsh Church In Romlley, we welcomed
those from our 10¢21 community and beyond lor Infant
baptisms, wèddlngs and funerals.
Wè are blessed that so many ol our church fatnily servè
across the week and on Sundays in order lo bless our
church and local community through our many varled
ministries, and we thank £11 those who lead and serve
week in, week out, to make these happGn. Ourvolunteer
evenings hav8 also been a real encourag8mant to all
who came.

In July we celebrated 35 years ol Prampu5hers (now
Prammies and all groups included in Mini Chaddersl.
It was wondgrtul to SÈ6 the Impact and friendships that
have been impacted by this rninistry.
We h8d Naoml from Growlng Hope vlslt in Merch io help
us look at how we can be more accessible as a church
lor everyone. She Chatted wilh the team$ on Sunday
morning and gave feedback on ways we could help
children with additional needs. W& héld a workshop in
the afternoon where other churches were welcomed.
We are thankful to Vic Stone, who is overseelng how we
can help our groups be more Incluslve.
Please read the separate reports to see details of all our
ministries. It is sometimes 2 challengè to fill all ol our
volunteer spaces so, if you feel you can help serve on
any ol our teams, then please contact the church office.
Our APCM was held during a joint Sunday morning

God's ￿slon for St Chads. We have a150 continued MLT

Youth Church has realw gone from strength to St￿ngth
over the last year. The young peoplé have rèally found
their voice and It'5 been great to seè thèm ask quèstions
and go de&per in terms of what thelr lalth Is. We h8ve
8150 changed the way we run thlngs, in terms ol being

We can t W81t for the next course to startl Thanks to all

We have already seen great results from thls change in
terms Df them having more chance to bulld community

Blast - Zok•Watts
BLAST is our primary school outre8¢h group that meets
mld-wÈèk in the Guywood Centre. We have a great
core group of klds who come every week to play games,
have lun and learn more about who Jesus Is and what
having a faith means lor them in their own lives.
A big hlghllght was also seeing a few ol our young
people publlcly declare their faith to the rest of the
church at Easter by choosing to become baplised.
We can't wait to wh8t the next year holds for this group
of young paople.
T￿r &TBN .Z¢keWatts
TNT Ischool years 7-111 has gone from strength to
strength over the last year, wY(h our numbers growing
with new young people loining 8nd bonds and
friendships continuing to grow between thetn. We had a
great trip to Alton Towers in the sumrller term where the
young people had great fun spènding the day on roller
coaslers and other fun ridés. Recently we've been
doing a series on good news, and we have 8150 done the
Onelile Leadership serfes which was great in growing
their leadership. A particular highlight last term was
when TBN planned and led a TNT se55ion which was a
great opportunity for the groups to come together
and for the younger ones to lèarn from the older ones.
2024 saw some changes in TBN Ischoo1 ye8r$ 11 to 131
with all our year 13 students leaving to go off to
universlty in September. But before that there were
many highs, including a group weekend èway to London
to attend the Onelife Conference which was a fantastic
event wherè the young people were ablè to meet lots of
Chrfstians their age and grow in theirfaith.
Another youth takeover saw TBN all playing their part
brilllantly serving and declarfng their faith in front of the
rest of the church and then finally culminating in a TBN
prom as a great send off lor the year 13s. Recently
we've bèen looking into Romans 8 and 81s0 doing a
serfes on prayer.
