Rev 7vs 9-17 Minister Report

In this triumphant vision of heaven, we are led to see the vast crowd of witnesses crying out in worship ‘salvation belongs to our God’.

And then, with all the angels that hymn of thanksgiving vs12.

And then there is the promise of eternal shelter and God’s provision and guidance.

This is the 200[th] Anniversary of the building of the first church and a fitting time to give thanks for the saints who have gone before us. The visionaries who stepped out in faith to buy this land and open the first church. Only a small band of saints in Christ. I wonder what they would have thought as they look upon the work of the church today?

We give thanks for the Saints of the past, we stand on their shoulders with a desire to serve our community and proclaim Christ in order to make disciples and make a difference with the practical love of God in our community.

And it is fitting to think about the Saints who have gone before us, because this year has been a sad year when we have lost some of our dearest members and friends.

We remember before God ; Jean Hibbert, Alan Burton, Dorothy Easthorpe, Les Snowden and Shirley Ellins- whose thanksgiving takes place on May 17[th] .

They are now part of that vast crowd worshipping God and face to face with their Shepherd.

In our sadness and loss, let us be inspired by their faith in Jesus and in their service to God with us in this church. May we pick up the baton and continue to follow our Shepherd, the Lamb upon the throne, proclaiming Christ and practically serving our community in the love of Christ.

And in our sadness may God wipe the tears from our eyes.

As we look to the present, we give thanks for the 3 people who were baptised and the two who renewed their baptism and the one who became a member on Easter day: Tom, James, David, Debbie, Emily and Lucy

We give thanks for the Alpha Course that we had this year and for those who became Christians through it.

And we give thanks for emerging leaders and their influence locally and nationally. For Hannah Caval, whose testimony of faith is going to be shared at the National Alpha conference at the Albert Hall. And… news hot off the press… Andy Gordon-McKibbin who is going to candidate for the Methodist Ministry. We pray Hannah, Andy and Naomi and their family. This is the sign of a growing and fruitful church when we can empower growing ministry and witness in the next generations.

This all starts with our evangelism and our welcome into Church. You will hear from Scott about how we are trying to build bridges with those who we welcome into the life of the church. We need to remain intentional in all that we do. We want to bring people into the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. In the last year we had our first welcome meal and we will be planning the next one soon. This is an opportunity to invite newer people for a meal and to share what it means to be part of the church and what difference it makes that we are part of the Methodist Church. The first one was very successful and we hope to build on that.

We are also still working on a discipleship course and I personally want to get that up and running in the coming year. In the meantime, discipleship continues to be fed through our house groups and in the last year two new housegroups have started. If you are not part of a group please speak to Graham Pettinger.

And another area that we are working on is to improve our communication and it is hoped that you will notice different ways that we are trying to keep people informed.

As I close, I want to bring us back to consider this year bi-centenary year. We started the year with a 24 hour prayer room. We will continue our celebrations with the coronation concert on 6[th] May. Any profit made from that concert will go towards the repayment of outstanding intertest free loans for the building project.

In June we will be attempting a bible marathon. Reading the bible from Genesis to Revelation. As we do, we are declaring that as a church we stand on the Word of God. “Let the word be heard”. We need as many people as possible to join in by reading in relay style non stop for 4 days. There are over 300 individual reading slots – so we need over 100 readers over the 4 days to be willing to share in the 15 minute reading slots. Its an amazing experience and more information will follow.

Then around 25[th] November we hope to have another Gala Dinner and gift day to sow into the future mission of the church. This will include entertainment and a time to celebrate the witness of this church in the past and pray for it witness in the next 200 hundred years.

Finally, I want to thank every person who has offered themselves in whatever way to enable the work and witness of this church to continue. There is a culture of willingness to help in this church and we are blessed for that.

Thank you

Jonathan
