Minutes of the Annual Church Meeting held on Thursday 19[th] June 2025

## **Tavistock Methodist Church**

|Ref|Minutes|Actions|
|---|---|---|
||||
|1.|**Welcome**
Rev Chris Brown welcomed everyone to the meeting and explained the format||
|2.|**Opening Devotions**
Chris read from Luke 5: 1-11 where Jesus calls Simon Peter and the other fishermen. It can
be a challenge to fulfill our calling to be fishers, but the clue is in the story. Jesus finds a
point of connection then uses it as an introduction. Chris then told the story of Henry
Trumbull and his train journey and interaction with another passenger. Evangelism is not a
system, it’s listening and waiting to hear people’s concerns. We can then go in softly.
Chris opened the meeting with prayer.||
|3.|**Approval of members of the meeting**
A list of members of the meetingwas distributed aspart of the calling papers.||
|4.|**Apologies**
Apologies were received from the following Church Council members:
David & Valerie Norman; Anna Dodd; Joan Gosling; Wendy Greig; Jackie Palmer; Margaret
Smith and Peter Johnston.
Other apologies were received from:
Andrew Greig and Eunice Weemys||
|5.|**Minutes of the previous meeting**
Minutes were approved and signed byChris||
|6.|**Matters Arising**
Chris mentioned that some aspects of church life were talked about at the Church
Weekend,and the idea for mission came out of that||
|7.|**Notification of Any Other Business incl. conflict of interest**
None||
|8.|**Correspondence**
None received,nothingto send||
|9.|**Appointments which won’t come up in reports**
Jennifer Youé is stepping down as a Steward and Chris expressed the meeting’s thanks to
Jennifer for all she’s done.
Eunice Weemys has said she would be happy to become a new church steward.**This**
**appointment was agreed by all those present and eligible to vote**
The TMC reps, whose time of office has come to an end, are Jennifer Youé, Kelvin
Shillabeer and Nathan Blundy.
Jennifer said she did not want to be reappointed and Kelvin said he was happy to
continue. Rebecca Mullins offered to become a new TMC rep to Church Council.**These**
**appointments were approved by all those present and eligible to vote.**
This leaves one vacancy on the Church Council for a rep from the TMC general
congregation.||

Minutes of the Annual Church Meeting held on Thursday 19[th] June 2025

## **Tavistock Methodist Church**

||**The members of the Annual Church meeting gave authority for this vacancy to be filled**
**at the Church Council meeting; with a recommendation that it be someone from the**
**young people’s group.**||
|---|---|---|
|10.|**Connexional, District and Circuit matters**
Nothing to report||
|11.|**Reports from the life of the Church (as distributed prior to the meeting)**
Updates were given as below:
•
Family Work Management. Dee Benzie reported that Lisa Dawson has been
appointed for 5 hours a week, working with 11-18s, on a one year contract. Please
hold Lisa in your prayers
•
Property. Peter Rowe advised the meeting that we have received a quote for
repairing the wall which will come to about £35k. The Chair expressed thanks to
Peter
•
Finance. Robert Oxborough pointed out that costs are increasing while income is
decreasing (various reasons for this). We have reasonable reserves, but we need
to increase our income and address the shortfall. There is no further action the
Church Council needs to take until the autumn meeting
As the reports for the Annual Church Meeting are produced for info only, there was no
need for a vote on them.||
|12.|**Discussion on Mission**
A mission focus was agreed at the Church Weekend in March 2025. Subsequently, some
interested parties met and talked about what could be done. We can step out in faith, but
need to be wise as to how to do it.
Those attending this Annual Church Meeting shared ideas about how the mission would
be carried out, where it would be done and who it would be for.
After much discussion, Rev Paul Smith proposed that the mission focus week should have
its climax on Pentecost Sunday (24thMay 2026) – so it would include two weekends.
**This proposal was carried by a substantial majority of those present at the meeting and**
**eligible to vote.**
It was also agreed that each church group should be approached about how they want to
be involved in the mission.
A steering group will be formed to oversee and then smaller teams will help with events.
At the moment, the steering group will comprise:
Rev Chris Brown; Deborah Bevan; Tracy Harding; a steward; two young people and Roger
Leigh. Rev Paul Smith said he was happy to be consulted. Other people can also be co-
opted onto this group as need arises.||

Minutes of the Annual Church Meeting held on Thursday 19[th] June 2025

## **Tavistock Methodist Church**

||Everyone is to think of things that could be done – follow your passions and bring them to
the steering group. Robert Oxborough mentioned he could help with a creative thinking
workshop.
Prayer meetings have already been set up and prayer triplets could be set up, along with
asking the life groups to pray too. Wendy Greig to be part of this conversation.
Rev Paul Smith proposed, and Pauline Sawyer seconded, that a budget be set aside to start
this work and**a sum of £1k was agreed by all those present and eligible to vote.**
Donations would be welcome too, as we need to bear in mind we may lose some rental
income as the church is to be used for events.
Robert mentioned that we could also take some money from reserves if needed.||
|---|---|---|
|13.|**Future dates**
Nothing mentioned||
|14.|**Date of next Church Council meeting:**
Wednesday22ndOctober 2025,where the dates for 2026 will also be arranged||
|15.|**Closing prayer:**
Chris closed the meeting by saying let’s get excited about taking the message of Jesus out
and the meetingclosed at 9:05p.m. byall sharingthe Grace||
