Stewards’ report to TMC AGM, Thursday 24[th] June 2021

Current Stewards team: Sarah Biggs, Jackie Palmer, Eunice Weemys, Pam Wylie and Rob Palmer.

Iris Wright, John Wright, Jennifer Youé have been acting stewards pending formal confirmation at this AGM.

This report reflects upon the extended period since we were last able to hold an AGM in June 2019 and looks ahead to the opportunities arising as lockdown eases. The pandemic has meant that it wasn’t possible to hold an open meeting during 2020. We hope that the scheduled easing of lockdown restrictions will go ahead as planned thus allowing us to meet in person on 24[th] June, with those who wish to connect online joining the meeting via Zoom.

Steward team changes

We formally record that Lionel Davies has stood down as a steward since the last AGM. Sarah Biggs will also be standing down as a steward at the end of this month. We thank Lionel and Sarah for all they have contributed in their service as stewards.

We’re pleased to have had Iris & John Wright and Jennifer Youé serving as acting stewards in the period since the last AGM. Formal confirmation of their appointment as stewards is sought from the meeting.

Eunice Weemys has kindly offered to serve an additional year as steward for the coming year.

Pam Wylie has also kindly agreed to serve once again as our senior steward for the coming year.

Services at TMC in the past year

These unusual times continue to present constantly changing circumstances, but thanks to the skills, inventiveness, commitment, and hard work of so many in our church family we have continued to safely extend what we’re able to do together in person and also share together online each week as well as maintaining regular contact with many of those without online access.

When lockdown eased, we have met in person for socially-distanced Sunday services. Now that more of us have been fully vaccinated, numbers attending have gradually increased. A sizeable number continue to follow the streamed service or catch up later via the TMC YouTube channel.

The monthly all-age service with a dozen or so families sitting together on blankets is proving particularly popular.

We continue to be thankful for our Pastoral teams and others who maintain contact with those who are not digitally connected and deliver printed copies of the Friday update email along with service-athome sheets and audio-CD/DVD recordings of the previous Sunday’s service.

Looking ahead

With our Superintendent minister Rev’d. Steve Emery-Wright retiring at the end of August 2022, the Circuit Invitations Committee is already in operation seeking a match for the appointment of Steve’s successor. Pam will be representing TMC on the Invitations Committee.

Rev’d. Phil Griffin reaches the end of his time with us in August of this year so Phil, Catherine and family will be moving to a new appointment. A “Farewell Service” will take place on Sunday 25th July, 6.00pm at Yelverton Methodist Church followed by a Faith Supper – further details to be circulated nearer the time.

In various ways, the easing of lockdown has added to the complexity and diversity of what we’ve needed to offer as a church. Many among our congregation and local community are continuing to stay away from larger gatherings. Also, there are those who are now able to connect with our new ways of worship whereas they might not previously have come into a service at church on a Sunday. It has been vitally important for us, therefore, to continue with the various online offerings which many are relying on. Indeed, it seems certain that some of our online offerings will remain as a permanent and important part of how TMC functions in the long run.

Following the disruption of the last year or so, it is important for us to grasp the opportunities which now arise as we look to “build back better”. An encouraging example has been the online Alpha course which ran successfully from January to March. The 2 individuals most powerfully impacted by this Alpha course would not even have even participated had the course been running in the “usual” way. Several from this Alpha group have continued to meet online each week and have just completed the Bible Society’s “Bible Course”.

Stewards and others are already discussing what our “new normal” might look like. Ideas and contributions to these discussions are most welcome.

A key issue for the period ahead will be to again encourage widespread involvement in supporting and enabling the regular activities at TMC. We have been blessed with amazing teams of volunteers over the years. After the interruption of the past year or so, we’ll need to re-establish the teams for our various regular activities and look to find ways for us all to share our different skills and giftings.
