PARISH MEETING :

The Minutes of the meeting held on 11[th] April 2019 , were signed as a true record with no corrections. All persons present were in favour.

Appointment of Safeguarding Officer:

Jane Serbyn was appointed to this position for the Team.

Finance:

Peter Borley-Cox explained that the meeting had to approved both the 2019 accounts and the 2020 accounts. Both years had been independently examined and nothing had been found. Both financial years had been given a clean bill of health. However, the financial position needs to be highlighted and the parish share has not been able to be paid in full. 2019 was £23,700 short and 2020 was £41.00 short.

Paula Blackwell asked if the reopening of the church halls would be a help to the Parish’s finances. Peter Borley-Cox said that the reopening would be helpful as this was a large source of income.

Peter Borley-Cox proposed that the meeting to approve the two sets of accounts. This was seconded by Ruth Gould. The meeting passed this motion.

Appointment of Independent Examiner:

Peter Borley-Cox proposed that Jackie Brame be appointed as Independent Examiner. This was seconded by Mandy Bentley. The meeting passed this motion.

Revd. Canon Jane Butler took this opportunity to thank Peter Borley-Cox and Sue Evans for their hard work in what was a very trying year. She added that the parish finances would not run as smoothly without them. Revd. Canon Jane Butler told the meeting that Peter had held the position of treasurer for 10 years and Sue Evans had held the position of deputy treasurer for 15 years. Both wanted to take a break, so the meeting was asked to think and pray on this matter.

Electoral Roll:

Due to lockdown, it had not been possible to audit the three electoral rolls. The main changes had been with any deaths that may have occurred. The three electoral roll officers were amending the rolls when any changes had occurred.

Team Vicar's Comments:

Revd. Rachel said it had been a difficult year for the parish. It had had to adapt very quickly, and the use of technology had allowed the whole Parish to grow closer. The embracing of technology was due to Revd. Denise.

Curate’s Comments

Revd. Denise said that she echoed what Rachel had said. It had started in February 2020 when everybody had to work together to ensure that the congregation all had books and other worship materials. She praised the parish to embracing Zoom. She said that they were a unity in the parish which was lovely to see. She told the meeting that the Parish needs to build on this.

Rector's Comments:

Revd. Jane said that it had been a horrendous year in many ways and had been difficult for everyone, the three churches and the Team. However, there had been positives as people got to know each other. This is why the Team is keen to continue with coffee Zoom. We must give thanks that we have come through this time. Revd. Jane said that she had been hugely supported by the Revds. Rachel & Denise and the lay team. We must now look forward and build the team stronger. Revd Jane said she wanted Kingsthorpe to be a good parish for her successor to take over.

Revd Jane thanked Mandy Bentley (St John the Baptist), Jo Carrick and Shirley Cumbleton (St Marks) for their service as Churchwardens.

Revd. Jane thanked Revd Denise for her time in the parish as curate. She added that she had been a superb curate and wished her well in her new parish. The Parish will be having two curates joining the team in the summer.

Report from Organisations & Committees

Revd. Jane told the meeting that all the report were in the booklet which had been circulated. She asked if there were any questions. There were none.

Any Other Business:

Paula Blackwell said she felt that recognition should be given to the work of the St David’s Foodbank. Revd. Rachel added it had been successful as the Foodbank had volunteers from all three church and that Paula was right that the Foodbank’s success should be noted. The Foodbank has helped many families in the parish.

Mandy Bentley felt that thank needed to given to Dorothy Brooke who had stepped down as PCC Secretary after many years. Revd. Jane agreed and said that Dorothy had been given a plant of her choice as a thank you gift.

Team Rector’s Report

The parish has continued to work with in the situation of COVID. So some of the things that have been done have been done differently to accommodate that. During this year we have both lost and gained staff. Rev Denise Maud left to be and incumbent, Rev Rachel Hetherington left after 11 years to work at St Christopher’s Care Home. Two new curates came Rev Jonathan and Sarah Lee to fulfil their curacy. Rev Stuart Mousir-Harrison continues to work with and be based at St Marks Church.

On the whole although there has been much change due to the continually changing situation of COVID the churches have coped well, with both the services on zoom which have been well received, as has morning prayer and compline. There have been people from each church attending these services. As lockdown was eased the churches opened up again although with less people in all of the churches. We have noticed that some people in our congregations have been severely affected by COVID and lock down and some have lost confidence. This is a concern to us especially as we are missing families and continue to do so.

All the groups have continued either on zoom or in person as has been appropriate in all of the churches.

All the churches have opened up during this time and some things have started again.

The financial situation of the parish continues to be a concern as we cannot meet our pariah share as we have been unable to do so for some time. This continues to be a very difficult situation for the parish. I would like to thank. Peter Borley-Cox and Sue Evans for all the work that they do with the accounts.

All the church buildings are in good order and working towards their quinquennial requirements. The work at St John the Baptist church towards the extension of the chapter house continued but has been slowed down because of COVID. All fabric meetings across the team have been held on zoom.

All church wardens meetings have been held on zoom. I would like to thank them for their hard work, working in continually changing circumstances.

The ability to use Zoom has made a difficult situation easier and I would like to thank Rev Denise Maud especially for all the work she put into this so that Zoom could be used in a variety of situations.

On the whole this has been a good year working in difficult circumstances, and I would like to thank all those both in the lay and clergy team and others for all they have done to make this a good year.

I look forward to the next year and what it will bring.

Curates’ Report

We would like to thank everyone for their warm welcome of us to Kingsthorpe. Our ordination as Deacons on June 27[th] 2021 was a very special service, and we were sorry that the numbers allowed were so restricted. We are hopeful that our ordination to the priesthood on June 26th 2022 will not be restricted on numbers and that many of you will be able to come to support us.

Since arriving in parish we have been busy helping the churches reopen after the covid restrictions and bring back or initiate a number of new activities.

Little Stars launched in Sept 2021 at St Mark’s Church, and then a week later at St John the Baptist Church. This group for parents/carers and their children attracts usually through word of mouth or Facebook, between 10-20 families each week for a 1.30-3pm session where we gather for stories, songs and prayers on theme accompanied by live piano music and the presence of a large Teddy Bear dressed in his liturgically coloured waistcoat. After this there is informal time relaxing with toys, chat and refreshments. It’s a chance for parents/carers to meet others after the isolation of the pandemic, and many new friendships have been forged.

Out of the contacts made through Little Stars, an Alpha Course has been launched. This small group is exploring together more about Christianity and discussing the difficult questions that arise for many believers in their journey of faith.

Men’s Group has met several times over the past six months on Saturday evenings, as Covid restrictions have eased. We have enjoyed each other’s company with good conversation, meals, games and an indoor bowls evening together. It is hoped that the group will expand over the coming months and that in addition to purely social events there may be occasional opportunity to meet to discuss and consider how faith and challenging issues that arise in daily life might interact.

PauseWork4-Lunch has been meeting in St. Mark’s church hall on alternate Thursdays since September. It provides an opportunity for those who are working from home, or locally in Kingsthorpe, to eat and talk together over a quick pre-cooked lunch which is slotted into a lunch-hour away from work / the home office. There is usually an interesting Thought for the Day to discuss over coffee before those who have gathered depart for their afternoon’s work. While numbers are currently small it is hoped that the group may expand over coming months.

In September Brick Church restarted with its monthly, ‘second Sunday’, afternoon events at St. John-the-Baptist Church. There is a lovely mix of family groups who attend regularly and it is encouraging that the group is expanding. We enjoy a bible story together (read and watched on a ‘Lego-video’, before

launching into an hour or so of fun with Lego and Duplo, taking themes from the bible story and building together with creativity and imagination. This is coupled with a Lego treasure hunt, a prayer wall and colouring sheets, which is all followed by Grace, and more chat over a ‘sandwich & cake’ tea together. Prizes are awarded to the best builds each time.

In October Rev Sarah and Sarah-Jane Major went to visit Year 6 at Whitehills Primary School to talk to both classes about their Christian faith and to answer their anonymously written difficult questions about faith. It was a really super morning, and the children were so responsive and interesting to talk to. This was followed by a zoom with Year 2 in Advent, and then in February 2022 with visits from year 2 and year 5 to St Mark’s Church to explore Easter. A large team was involved in both the set up and the running of that day and our thanks go to everyone who was involved as the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed their time at St Mark’s Church. More visits are planned to the school to talk to Year 4, and for the Early years classes and Year 1 to visit our churches in the summer term.

Our weekly rhythm of a mix of online and in person services of zoom morning prayer on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Spiritual Communion which transferred to being an in-person Thursday morning Holy Communion at St John the Baptist Church, have become a regular part of our worship with those who choose to attend. Weekly Compline has become a fortnightly online service preceded by either coffee & chat or the Bible Book Club run by Sarah-Jane Major. We do encourage anyone who is available at those times at the beginning or end of the day to join us if they can, it is so lovely to meet to pray and worship together.

We have spent several months this year shadowing Canon Jane and learning how to conduct baptisms and funerals and have really enjoyed the privilege of engaging with families through this process, celebrating happy occasions as well as sharing together in more difficult times. We have enjoyed pastoral visiting and taking Holy Communion to those less able to attend church now later in life.

We have enjoyed being part of the running of the Advent and Lent courses since we arrived, and we were excited by the imagination of the group that gathered to attend the Leading Your Church Into Growth online course that took place in February. We look forward to working with everyone throughout 2022 and beyond to help develop a wide range of accessible prayer and worship opportunities that might appeal to those wanting to engage with faith in our parish.

St David – 4 members have moved away and 1 new member added. The total membership is 37.

St John the Baptist – There was no formal revision of the roll in 2021 but the 3 persons that had died during the year were removed leaving 86 persons remaining.

At the revision for 2022 5 had left the parish and 1 had died leaving 80 on the roll. There were no new applicants to join the roll at this point, but 3 non residents have indicated a wish to be added to the roll as soon as they have completed the statutory period of 6 months attendance at St John’s.

PCC Secretary's Report 2021

The Parochial Church Council met five times in the 2020-21 parochial year. Officers were elected at the end of the annual meeting. All the meetings were quorate and held on Zoom. Attendance was very good.

The main items of business across the year:

Deanery Synod is attended regularly.

Core Groups remain and were able to restart in person during the year, i.e., Pastoral Care, Nurture and Growth, Youth, and Mission.

St. David’s Churchwardens Report - 31[st] December 2021

Vestments & Chattels:

These are all as previous years and are in good serviceable condition, valuables are retained within a locked safe when not used for worship.

Buildings & Fabric:

During the year, several repair works have been carried out, as requested in the Quinquennial Inspection.

Electrical Inspection undertaken September 2021, satisfactory. This year it is the 5 year overall electrical testing due and we are in the process of booking this.

We are confident that the hall continues to satisfy the safety aspects as required. Similarly with the Fire Regulations the current fire precautions, testing regime and evacuation routes are compliant with requirements. These tests are carried out every 6 months.

During the year, metal shelving was installed in St. David’s prayer room to make room for more storage for the Food Bank, as a necessity during the Covid Crisis. Also the kitchen had new work tops fitted and was deep cleaned throughout. Plans are in place for new shelving and flooring in the store cupboard, this is desperately in need of changing due to the many organisations using it. Funds were raised for this by holding a Beetle Drive, a Musical evening and Quiz evening, all well supported and the work will be financially covered. Quotes are being obtained for the installation of a Toilet for the Disabled, and grants are being applied for.

Overall the property is in good repair, many thanks to Peter Cotter. The grounds are kept in good order, our appreciation and thanks to the regular work of Dave Fall no small task. Also through the year working parties have kept the grounds tidy and in good order.

General:

Although we have been closed for parts of the last year we have tried to keep a visible presence in the community and services were held where possible. Thanks to Sarah-Jane Major and others for arranging the usual Christmas activities which was greatly appreciated.

Finally, thanks to the Revd Canon Jane, Revd. Sarah and Johnathan, Sarah Jane Major and visiting priests for their support for St. David's family and the community. We are so grateful to all the members of the congregation who have given us their support, whether it be in the social or fund raising events, good teamwork, it is very much appreciated. Particular thanks to Peter Cotter who carries out an enormous amount of work behind the scenes, unknown to many of us. Also to Barry Munroe who has voluntarily taken over the task of cleaning the hall etc. in readiness for outside bookings. Also thanks to Joyce for organising the 50/50 club which after the break caused by COVID, numbers are now improving, not forgetting tea-makers, flower arrangers, and all who contribute to the upkeep of our service.

St. John the Baptist Churchwardens Report, 2021

As with all other churches the opening of St. John the Baptist Church at the start of 2021 was restricted to funerals only, albeit with limited numbers, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Normal services, in church, restarted with a Eucharist on Maundy Thursday, but without the traditional washing of feet, and then a service on Easter Day with communion in one kind only (bread). Services initially were limited to 10.00am only on a Sunday, with mid-week services continuing on-line. Attendance at services and funerals continued to be limited until May when restrictions were eased.

At the end of 2020 our Director of Music, Mr Andrew Moodie, had resigned his post with us and Mr Ian Smith agreed to continue playing the organ, and looking after the choristers. However, numbers in the choir were initially restricted and a lot of the younger members did not return after the lockdowns.

Revd. Denise Maud had left us in May to take over her own parish(es) and then in July we were joined by two new Curates in training, Revds. Jonathan and Sarah Lee. As the Curates were not ordained priests, we were not able to have a Eucharist service every week and we often held a Service of the Word at 10.00am on a Sunday.

The Church was open for Heritage Weekend with the usual historical information on the building and the “Chained Library” on display. This weekend coincided with the annual “Ride & Stride” event.

The annual Remembrance Service was held within Church in November, and this year we were able to hold the Act of Remembrance at Kingsthorpe War Memorial. This service was well attended, with both Kingsthorpe and Whitehills Scout Groups joining us. At the end of November, the service of Spiritual Communion was stopped on-line, and Holy Communion was re-introduced at SJB at 9.30am on a Thursday.

During the last few months of the year a new “Little Stars” group was set up, aimed at pre-school children; and met alternate weeks at SJB and St. Mark’s. Brick Church was also restarted on a Sunday afternoon on a monthly basis.

The Christmas Tree Festival was arranged for the start of December and was well attended and finished off with “Carols on the Green” with refreshments and fire-pits. Although there was no Advent Carol Service this year, we did hold a Nine Lessons and Carols service, Crib Service, Midnight Mass and Christmas Day Family Eucharist. We also hosted a Christingle Service within church for the local Kingsthorpe Village Primary School. Numbers continue to be lower than what was considered “normal” but Christmas services were well attended and we hope it will pick up again in 2022.

St John the Baptist Fabric Committee Report 2021

The fabric committee has met regularly during the year. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic all meetings have been virtual meetings on Zoom.

A health and safety review is carried out regularly.

Work on the project to extend the Chapterhouse has continued. The DAC had, as previously reported requested further archaeological investigations which were planned to be undertaken prior to the faculty application being submitted. The DAC however asked for those investigations to be carried out prior to issuing the faculty application forms. The excavations were carried out in September and the findings reported to the DAC. Unfortunately, the DAC did not consider the report detailing the findings until December and then raised further questions which were answered. Until such time as the faculty application is submitted only limited progress can be made in seeking further financial support. Whilst it is appreciated that the DAC have a role to play, they have not helped moving the project forward.

The quinquennial works have been completed. Additional works were required to repair stonework on the Chancel Gable end leading to a significant increase in cost. The total cost was however within the budget set aside for the works. In addition to the works required in the quinquennial report a sump was formed in the crypt to deal with the ingress of water at times of heavy rain.

A minor repair to the clock was needed and carried out by Smiths of Derby.

Annual servicing of the clock, boilers, alarm systems and fire extinguishers was carried out

Following a spate of call outs to the roof alarm the alarm company were asked to check the system over when they undertook the annual service. One of the sensors was found to be damaged and was replaced. A second sensor was also found to be faulty. This was also replaced.

The additional earthing required for the lightening conductor is still required. It is intended that this would be carried out as part of the work to extend the Chapterhouse.

The work to the trees and shrubs in the churchyard has been completed by the contractor working for the Borough Council. Regular trimming of the trees is also being carried out.

In December the boiler in the Chapterhouse failed. The boiler was over 30 years old and irreparable. The Archdeacons approval to it being replaced was obtained and quotations sought. The work was carried out in January.

There were no organised churchyard tidy-ups during the year due to pandemic restrictions. The fabric committee would however like to thank those that have, as individuals, on occasion done some tidying up.

St Mark’s Churchwardens report – year ended 31[st] December 2021 Buildings and fabric

The boilers had their annual service and maintenance in November 2021 and no issues were identified.

All the appropriate checks to meet the Fire Regulations and electrical testing have been undertaken in the year. A minor repair/upgrade of the emergency lights was required, and this was carried out as soon as it was identified.

We have begun to review future plans in line with Net Zero Carbon Church guidance to see how we can reduce our energy usage.

Thank you to the fabric committee who do so much to maintain the church, often keeping many repairs ‘in house’ to enable us to save money. Thank you also to the many members of the congregation who help keep St Mark’s looking good – cleaning, lawn mowing, gardening, and many other jobs which are all appreciated!

General

It has been good to see people and activities return to normal over the year following the lockdown of January 2021. Our Sunday attendance numbers are

now stable and similar to pre-pandemic levels. We are looking forward to increasing our activities and outreach more in 2022.

Sadly children’s activities have not restarted due to few children attending on a Sunday. We have increased links with the school and look to more plans with the uniformed groups now that we have more confidence with larger numbers of people.

We have regular groups running during the week and Little Stars and Pause Work4Lunch have been welcomed new initiatives.

Hall bookings continue to be good with several regular bookings which brings in a steady income.

At Christmas we held a range of activities both in and out of the church to try and remain as covid-safe as possible. Carols on the Green returned and attendance was the same pre-covid. We also held an outdoor trail for small children and also left pebbles around the area for children to find. Both created engagement on Facebook and excitement for a number of children! We held a Christingle Service on Christmas Eve and had 74 people attend. It was lovely to welcome so many people into church after such a long break.

Thank you to everyone who as supported my first year as churchwarden. It is very much a team effort and everyone’s contribution is highly valued. There are many people who help with the running of the church so a big thank you to everyone who is involved.

Lay Reader’s Report

Another challenging year but also where there have been many blessings and opportunities to meet and worship together both through zoom and in person.

We said goodbyes, which are always difficult but we also said hello as we welcomed our new curates Rev Jonathan and Rev Sarah. It has been a privilege to get to know them and work alongside them. They have so much energy and their deep faith and love for Jesus and their desire for mission is infectious and has inspired me in my own journey with Christ.

Over the last year

I have worked together with Sarah, Jonathan and members of the Kingsthorpe family with local schools, it was exciting to welcome the youngsters back to our church buildings as well as visit schools to support the RE curriculum.

Fun and Faith meet once a fortnight. A team of adults coordinated by Kathy Wilcox and joined by Chris Woodley, myself, Jonathan and Sarah learn together with our young people, share a meal, and have fun. (They are much better at

bowling than I am, they put the barrier up for me so I didn't keep scoring 0). Our young people are a credit to themselves, their families, and a pleasure to work with.

Become part of the Little Stars team.

Enabled Bible Book Club to restart via Zoom, we are exploring our faith and our understanding of the bible together as a group.

Led Morning Prayer and compline via zoom.

Taken a funeral for a member of the St David's family, a real privilege to support a family through their loss.

Home communions, a special time for members of our church family who are now unable to come to church. I receive just as much or perhaps more from them as they do from me. They really appreciate the visit and hearing about their church family.

Leading service of the word services at all three churches and on occasions Holy Communion by extension at St David's. I have always felt welcomed at all our churches and would like to express my thanks to all church wardens and those responsible for music who have ensured that everything is ready for those services.

One of the highlights for me has been working with the eleven people from across the parish who came forward to join me in the Leading Your Church in Growth course. I had prayed about it as soon as I saw it advertised on the Peterborough web site. My prayers were answered. One real positive for me to come out of the pandemic has been the three churches working ever closer as a team. I won't say anything more about possible future plans, watch this space, be open to fresh ideas and opportunities to share with others our faith and work together in our communities.

Lastly, I would like to thank Rev Jane, for her encouragement, guidance, teaching, and prayers.

I look forward to continuing my journey with Christ together with you all.

Report from the Lay Pastoral Minister 2021/2022

This as we all know, as was the case last year not a normal year, due continuing covid restrictions. Nevertheless, church work pastoral care had not stop, it was carried on in a different way with regard to the rules. Thanks to all our Team Ministry we were adaptable using various innovative techniques, which we have come to use and rely on such as Zoom etc. In addition St Marks Church was encouraged to use the prayer network of communicating with each other as to the welfare of their contacts by phone or txt. Prayer request and concerns are fed into the Lay Ministers and sent out to the group, now numbering over 18 strictly sticking to the content of the request

As a result of the ever-changing restrictions care home communions are still suspended but external communication and individual home communion continued. Via the Lay Ministers and thanks to the curates and Sarah Jane in helping across the Parish. Personally 4 or 5 regularly receive communion at least once a month and really look forward to this and are very grateful

For those who are unaware, as reported each year, a constant review is undertaken by Rev Jane whereby individually as ministers and Lay Ministers, we get together regularly for 1:1 for an hour or so, face to face. This gives us all an opportunity to express our opinions ideas and grievances and to be of mutual encouragement in addition to the Team clergy and Lay Ministers. Some of our St Mark’s congregants are now in an established prayer triplet which was and is carrying on as and when it is permitted. The promotion of this vital area needs to grow

Fun & Faith continues to operate, live and the youngsters have great fun along with some varied ethical, faith, theological topics prayer and teaching. Thanks to Kathy, Sarah Jane, Rev Sarah, and Rev Johnathan in keeping this worthwhile Ministry going now at St David’s. twice a month. The youth enjoyed and outing at Christmas at the bowling alley and the traditional Pancake day, was also reestablished. Thanks to Johnathan Hunt in baking again, and to all that help to make this another success

The House groups which were reported on last year are indeed still functional and established using lots of different approaches and material. the groups functioned well in house or gardens, or Zoom if need be .

I would encourage and reiterate a comment from Last year’s report if you are at all interested ask myself or your fellow church friends, Jane Serbyn, Mark Brame or Canon Jane or Clergy for more details where you would be welcome. It might be that you would be interested in leading, if only on an ad hoc basis, if so, discuss this with one of the Ministers

House groups are on offer to all regardless of your ability or standing, and we strongly recommend that, you take advantage of this great resource, plenty of opportunities on all days and time so there can be no excuse that you can’t make some time if only for the fellowship. You don’t have to be an academic we can all learn from each other to increase our faith and share our experiences.

We wish it to be noted that Margaret and Chris are extremely grateful for the help and support of other members of the congregation and Team Clergy that people in our community are cared for. The pastoral needs are well covered at St Marks and across the Team as a whole.

Kingsthorpe Team Ministry Safeguarding

Since the last APCM there have been no Safeguarding issues identified in the parish. Regular updates have been presented in a report to the PCC meetings. A diary of Parish safeguarding Officer’s actions is kept by the Lead Parish Officer.

The Safeguarding team have updated the Diocese Parish Dashboard, encouraged PCC members to update their Safeguarding training and responded to policies as they come up for renewal.

Trainings covered are: Safer Recruitment. DBS certificates have been kept up to date as necessary and are now renewed every 3 yrs. All PCC members and those working with young people and vulnerable adults must register. Training continues to focus on Safeguarding and Domestic Abuse.

In November we held a Parish General Update training for all those DBS checked and other interested parties about Safeguarding, First Aid and Food Hygiene. Jane Serbyn

St John the Baptist Choir Report

The last 12 months have seen a gradual return to normality at services and rehearsals. However, this was only after several months of being restricted to a choir of just six, following an unexpected change to government regulations. These difficulties doubtless played at least some part in the loss of two further trebles during the autumn term, leaving the choir’s treble line with just our Head Chorister, Honey. We also lost three adults: sadly John died, Martin is no longer able to attend for health reasons and Polly relocated to Kent. We give thanks for their long and faithful service to the worship at SJB.

On a brighter note, we have welcomed two experienced adult singers (Mike and Stephanie) and a probationer treble (Boa) who was recruited by Honey. An

outreach initiative to children at two local schools has just been launched and we hope this will yield a few new junior members. Robin has taken on the responsibility for training the trebles and has reintroduced the Tuesday afternoon rehearsals. Nevertheless, it must be emphasised that the very small number of trebles/sopranos continues to be a material risk factor to the future viability of the choir. The choir has long been a vehicle for outreach to young people and their families; that it thrives is thus of wider importance than its simple contribution to Sunday worship.

Despite our reduced numbers, the choir is able to sing an anthem most Sundays and to lead the congregation in the setting of the Eucharist when appropriate. We were also delighted to return to a full ‘Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols’ on Advent 4 with the choir augmented by several former members and occasional singers.

Finally, I’d like to thank all members of the choir for their steadfastness during a difficult period in the choir’s history, mentioning Honey in particular for her commitment and enthusiasm as Head Chorister. Thanks also to Robert Wakefield who has recently started to share the organ playing, thereby releasing me to direct the choir which makes for more secure and accurate singing.

St John the Baptist Flowers Arrangers Annual Report 2021

2021 started in another lockdown and so the church was not in use and no flowers were required.

We kept in touch via our WhatsApp group sending photos of arrangements we had done at home together with photos of our spring gardens.

After lockdown ended we did arrangements for Easter and were able to continue doing arrangements throughout the rest of the year. We were especially pleased that we were able to do flowers for weddings that had been postponed from the previous year.

For the Christmas Tree Festival, we did a Christmas Roses tree which we decorated with silk and chocolate roses.

Looking to the future, we are experimenting with ways to do arrangements without using floral foam.

St Mark’s Flower Fund Report

We have continued only asking for donations at Festival times and provided flower arrangements for these. During the summer we have placed silk arrangements in church because of the extremely hot conditions in the building. Due to the ongoing COVid pandemic situation in the latter part of 2021 we decided to put a winter silk arrangement in church.

At the end of 2021 the accounts stood at £100.52 cash in hand. I made marmalade from the oranges which were made available and asked for donations for the Flower Fund. These donations totalled £24.55. At the time of writing this report the Flower Fund stands at £125.07. This year Easter and St Mark’s Patronal Festival will be celebrated a week apart so I will be asking for donations towards the cost shortly.

My thanks to those who have made donations and also to Ruth and Susie who have helped with the arrangements.

St David’s - Renew Wellbeing 88

This support group was formed in February 2019 with the regular support of volunteers. It is a space where it is ok not to be ok. A place to find a warm welcome, friendship and support.

The St David’s Renew 88 Wellbeing has been meeting on Wednesdays during the Pandemic as a support group. On occasions it has been necessary to pause the face-to-face group meetings in favour of a weekly parcel drop and individual support meeting on the doorstep. During this time also the offer of weekly Zoom meetings has been taken up by some members as a regular way of keeping in touch. Parcels contained a craft activity, prayer and meditation materials and refreshment. Recipient’s feedback has been encouraging during these isolating periods.

From July 2021 we were able to meet ‘face to face’ in St David’s Hall maintaining social distancing and following Covid regulations. It was great to see everyone together again.

The sessions include sharing of expertise and gifts in hobbies and personal caring and encouragement. Various activities are available, and a spiritual prayer and meditation space is included. Sessions conclude with a time of reflection and prayer.

Despite the restrictions of Covid 19 it has been a most enjoyable group which has steadily grown throughout the year. Members have found fellowship and relaxation. Currently there are twenty-six attendees.

St David’s Time for Tots

This group of Parents and children 0-5 has had another successful year. In September some of our youngsters started school, however our numbers have again increased and many of our children are now between 0-3.

During the Pandemic, our meetings have been sporadic, sometimes closed and when open have been necessary to limited numbers. We were able to maintain communication with our families by text and Facebook messages and activities.

From June 2021 we returned to regular meetings. Risk Assessments are carried out as regulations change.

Each week we start with a time of story and songs. Families receive Parenting support and courses, DVD boxes containing Parish information and family support. Church activities are advertised with personal invitations.

Our attendance currently is 18 adults and 22 children. Information can be found on our Facebook page and the parish website.

Mothers Union Chairperson Report

We started the year well with a communion service in September. During the service we inducted Paula Blackwell as a new member. This was followed by a faith lunch. We have continued with the monthly meetings.

A Christmas lunch was enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to Jane Roberts who organised this event.

Baptisms have now started at St John the Baptist. Thank you to Pauline Gothard and her team for giving their time and dedication for such an important occasion during a child’s Christian journey. Peggy Ingleton will continue to send cards to all those baptised.

When I agreed to be Branch Leader 3yrs ago, little did I know what was to come. COVID 19. Because of Covid my role has been different from the one experienced before. We were unable to meet as a branch for about 20months, but gradually

we have been able to come together again beginning with an Afternoon Tea held at St David’s last year in June.

During that difficult time, we were able to keep in touch through emails, phone calls and letters. Thank goodness for modern technology. Much of this was enabled by the committee members and I liaising and meeting regularly. I wish to thank the committee for their wonderful work and commitment during this difficult time. Thankyou Jane S, Paddy, Pam, Ann, Brenda and Jane R.

Thankyou also to Canon Jane and her team for their continuous guidance and support. Thankyou to all members for their support and understanding. Together we have survived as a branch.

I prayed that someone would come forward to be the new branch leader and my prayers were answered. Sarah-Jane Major will be your next Branch Leader and I thank God that my prayers have been answered.

May we continue as a branch, upholding the aims and objectives of the worldwide Mothers Union.

Parish House Groups

Over the past year during Covid 19 Zoom meetings have been possible. A variety of topics have been decided upon by those who attend and have created opportunity for discussion and learning.

Groups sizes are flexible, and sessions are strategically placed across the week including morning and afternoon sessions. Two house groups continue to offer a range of Bible studies and related subjects including prayer, support and refreshment.

Kingsthorpe Churches Together 2021/2022

Representatives from Kingsthorpe Churches Together held an informal meeting in January 2022 at St David’s Community Café to discuss the future of KCT as we emerge from the pandemic. The last meeting was February 2020. When we were discussing the Walk of Witness and plans for Easter 2020.

Present was Revd Francis M’itiiri (Methodist minister) Joan Heaton (St John the Baptist) Ruth Gould (St Mark’s) June Ward (St David’s) Maureen Robinson (St David’s) Dawn Lovesey (Baptist Church) Revd Sarah Lee Curate at Kingsthorpe Team Ministry. Trevor Clarke (Methodist) sent his apologies. There was no one able to attend from St Aidans Roman Catholic.

It was decided after some discussion that due to the toll the pandemic had taken on individuals over the last two years it would not be possible to reintroduce all the activities that had previously taken place. It was also decided that if KCT was to continue it needed a clear idea and terms of reference as to what KCT was trying to achieve. The representatives are to have another meeting in March 2022 to discuss the future of KCT.

The staffing level in the parish during the last year was Rector (Revd. Canon Jane Butler), the Curates (Revd. Denise Maud left the parish April 2021, Revds. Jonathan and Sarah Lee both joined the parish June 2021) and one half-time Team Vicar at St. David's Church (Revd. Rachel Hetherington left the parish July 2021). Assistance is also given to the parish by Rev Stuart Mousir-Harrison. The Lay Pastoral Ministers are Christopher Woodley and Margaret Gorringe. Mrs. Sarah-Jane Major is a Reader Ministry. Mrs. Judith Whitmore was the Lay Evangelist within the parish.

St. Mark:

Jo Carrick, Shirley Cumbleton, Suzanne Evans (Assistant Treasurer), Andrea Francis, Margaret Gorringe (LPM/ex-officio), Ruth Gould, Helen Hickman (Secretary), Elizabeth May, Karen Tomlin (Churchwarden), Kathy Wilcox and Christopher Woodley (LPM/Deanery Synod/ex-officio).

The Parochial Church Council met five times in full session in the year. All meetings were held on Zoom and were quorate.

(Representation to the PCC from each church at the annual meeting in 2013 increased to 10 persons over and above Churchwardens and Deanery Synod members (as agreed and notified in 2012)).

Various members of the PCC support the life of the Parish through sub-groups, i.e., Pastoral Care, Nurture and Growth, Youth activity and Mission.

Deanery Synod representation after the annual meeting was 3 persons. (The electoral roll allows for 5 positions).

The Parish was unable to pay the Parish Share in full in 2021. Regrettably any fund-raising efforts were curtailed due to the restrictions of the pandemic and the third lockdown.

The Parish Office, with a Team Co-ordinator and voluntary assistance, continues to be an important asset.

Mrs Jane Serbyn is the Parish Safeguarding Officer. She has ensured that across the team on-line training has been undertaken where individuals have access to the technology to do so. She provided regular updates to the Parochial Church Council.

The Team has representatives to the local Kingsthorpe Village Conservation Group, Pocket Park Committee, Kingsthorpe Churches Together and St. David's Community Association. The Community Café at St. David's had been closed due to the pandemic. However, as restrictions eased the Community Café was able to gradually reopen in line with the restrictions operating at the time. St David’s have been running a very successful and well used foodbank.

Fabric matters are dealt with regularly at all churches. The redevelopment of the Chapter House at St. John the Baptist has progressed and the report on the bore hole examination was submitted.

During 2021, contact with the local schools has continued. This has been happened by Zoom and in person once again when restrictions permitted.

Other events in the year:

Each of the church halls gradually opened for community events and sponsored by the church congregations.

Notes to the financial statements

  1. The financial statements of the PCC have been prepared in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 2006, together with applicable accounting standards and the SORP 2005, using the accruals basis.

Financial Review & Reserves

The net result for the year was a surplus of income over expenditure in unrestricted funds of £2,553. The PCC experienced a modest recovery in its income following the COVID-19 pandemic, with its buildings re-opened for most of the year – although not to pre-pandemic levels. With the corresponding impact on running costs, this means that whilst the PCC was able to pay a higher amount towards its Parish Share this was still not paid in full and neither did the amount paid reach the level pre-pandemic.

This report on the financial statements of the PCC for the year ended 31 December 2021 which are set out on pages 1 to 3, is in respect of an examination carried out in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 (“the Regulations”) and Section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

Respective responsibilities of the PCC and the examine

As the members of the PCC you are responsible for the preparation of financial statements. You consider that the audit requirement of Regulations and section 144(2) of the Act do not apply and that an independent examination is needed. In 2021 the Charity’s gross income did not exceed £250,000 and I am qualified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. It is my responsibility to issue this report on those financial statements in accordance with the terms of the regulations.

Basis of this report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act and to be found in the Church guidance, 2006 edition, issued by the Finance Division of the Archbishops’ Council. That examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the PCC and a comparison of the accounts with those records. It also includes considering any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Notes to the financial statements

  1. The financial statements of the PCC have been prepared in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 2006, together with applicable accounting standards and the SORP 2005, using the accruals basis.

Financial Review & Reserves

The net result for the year was a surplus of income over expenditure in unrestricted funds of £2,553. The PCC experienced a modest recovery in its income following the COVID-19 pandemic, with its buildings re-opened for most of the year – although not to pre-pandemic levels. With the corresponding impact on running costs, this means that whilst the PCC was able to pay a higher amount towards its Parish Share this was still not paid in full and neither did the amount paid reach the level pre-pandemic.

A summary of the PCC reserves is provided below. The reduction in restricted funds was due to ongoing fabric works at St John the Baptist church.
