The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and to become part of our
parish community at st Mary and St Ethelburga. The PCC maintsins an ov0N￿ of worship through¢)ut the parish
and make8 suggestions on how our services can involve the many groups that live within our parish. Our services and
worship put faith into practice through prayer and wpture, music and sacrament
When planning our activities for the year. the incumbent and the PCC have Considered the C¢)mmission's guidance
on public benefit and, in particular, the specific guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. In particular, we

To facilttste this it is also important that we maintsin the fabric of the churt* ￿lIdIng of St Mary and St

Achlevements and Perlornianc•
Ministy
During 2021 the parish has continued a8 ono of eigm parishes in Ihe Elham Valley Group Benekn, wth the
Reverend Jane Weeks as Rector and priesl-iTrcharge. The Cov1￿19 pandemic resulted in the cessation of most in-
person 8ervice8 throughout the benefice during the early part of the year and there has been an increased level of co
opération be￿en parishes. Revd Deb Scoble was ordained in June 2021 and is now Curats, resident in Lyminge.
R8ad8r Sharon P8inè ha$ ￿ntInUed as the Leader of the Pastoral Care Team.
Worship and Prayer
Desprte the pandemic have conts'nued to offer a raNJ8 of se￿1￿$ week by week, usiry a mixture of Zoom and
prfrrecorded services during the period when the church building was ck>sed. The 8.00 am Eucharl8t and evening
prayer provide a quiet, inb'mate and reflective environment for worship whilst OPF)Ortunib'e8 are provided for people to
engage in more informal worship Ihrough the services on the fitst and fourth Sunday momings of each month. the 3
Sunday now being a choir-led Communion service.
All are welcome to attend our regular services. In 2021 there were 72 M the Churth Electoral Roll, only h¥0 of whom
are not resident within the parish. Vlhen meeting. the tyFxcal weekly attendan￿ was 21>25 adults.. online sèrvic8S
attracted around 18 attendees while recorded serwces typically had 4¢>50 viewings. With the relaxation of COVID
restrictions, face-tfrface services were resumed from Easter onwards.
As well as these regular worship services, we enable our ¥*fiole communty to celebrate and thank God at the
milestones of the journey through life. Through baptism we thank Gc*# for the grft of lrfe: in marriage public vows are
exchanged with God's blessing., and through funeral Se￿iCeS friends and family express their grief and give Ihanks for
the life which 1$ now complete in this world and to commend the person into God's keeping. We have celebrated 12
funerals or intsrment of ashes in our church during 2021 and only ￿e wedding and two baptisms- numbers reduced
due to COVID.
We have weekly Bible Study and Hlyne Groups arKI have participatsd in Benefice Advent and Lent groups - most of
these held online this year.

Synods
During 2021, one member of the PCC was a member of the Elham Deanery Synod, providing the PCC wth an

Th8 chU￿h Building
We want our church to be awailable to our communty for private prayer and this year we have again been able to
leave it open during day1￿ht hours- mostly for ￿ats wayer complying wrth govemment COVID restrictions.
As in previou8 years. the PCC continued the rnonagement of the churchyard, sawng money on contrad gras8 cutting
and involving many people- not all of wthom are regular churchgcers. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions. thè
Communty Service work team. supervised by the Probation Servw, were not available to help this year.
Pastoral Care
Ethdburga Lunch Club. The popular monthty lunch dub has not met due to COVID r8striction8.
Schoo18 Activitie8. We interact *ryth the village Church of England school in many ways, although reduced this year
due to COVID. Revd Jane and Revd Deb arKI others take regular assemblies in school, there are schools services,
and we have one foundation governor. The school again organised their Prayer Week this year.
Some members of our parish are unable to attend thur¢h due to sickness or age. Vlhen allowed, a pastoral care
group visits those in the church family and communty needs are brought to our attention. Priests have vislted
all ¢hur¢h members who have requested it to celebrate o)mmunion with them either at their hom88 or in hospital.
S8feguaffling
The church ha8. over the past 8everal years. fvlly met our safeguardiw responsibiliti'es by carrying out ri8k
as808sments, 88feguarding training, and 8nsuring that DBS dearances are obtained for all requlred activ1￿88.
Mission and Outreach
Ouhvard Giving. One tenth of our weekly gmng is 88t agde for giving to Christian projects outside our own church -
distributed to vati¢XJ$ local, national and intemational charilies- as well as an emergencies fund. In 2021, a total of
£3000 was gNen.
During lockdown. a weekly benefice news and prayer letter has been produced which has been distributed
electronically and in paper copy to those wthout email. This keeps our parishioners inft)rmed of the important matter8

Flnanclal Review 2021
Receipts
Despite restraints incurred due to the Covid virus, our total voluntary income increased overall by £210, due
mainly to the fact that weddings and baptisms were résumed. colléctions from brought in £316, an
increase of £274.
Donation box receipts also increased by £165 and tax re<x)vered on all voluntary income by £407. These
inGrea$es, h¢)wever were offset by an overall redu¢tKJn in regular voluntary giving of £636
The increase in receipts was due rnainty to the following:
Parochial Fees received whth were £3,588 more than last year because of the resumption of
weddings.
Income from our investments amounted to £10,614, 8 surprisingty higher sum than was anticipated
and only a tiny r8du¢tion on last year
It was a real pleasure for us all to at last b8 able to hold 8om8 fundratsing activrties thk8 year. Apart
from the social aspéct that we had all missed we raised a net totsl of £451 from the music evenings,
£699 from the g8rd8n Safari ￿kand and £467 fr(xn the Christmas tree festival.
Expenditur8
Our largest unrestricted payment is for Mini8try. and the main portM)n of thB is the Parish Share which this year
amounted to £31,362 - a decrease of 1 %
Due to lad( of 88p4ices and lockdown. ministry expanses were reduced to only £590 for our Curate's expen8e8.
Wrth the increase in weddings. the portion of the parochial fees that were payable to the Diocese Increased to
£2,309. We had to pay £193 in total to other clergy because of Rèv Jane's extended sick leave.
Running Costs Were r8duced by £486 mainly due to a negotiated decrease in utilty payments
Th8 Administration Expenses indude Lyminge's share of the Benefice Administrator's wages and expense8,
copier repairs, advertising etc
The total wages and expenses that ￿re recouped from the other parishes in tho banefice
amounted to £6,593. an increase of £3.444.
Every year we reserve 10% of our unrestricted inc<)me to gNe to charitie8: thi8 year we gave a total of £3,000
We had to draw £10.000 down from investment lunds this year to support th8 running expenses of the church
because voluntary giving, donations received and income from our investments were insuffi¢ient by £11,161.
However despite having to draw down this sum, th8 investment funds have increased in value by £28,955,
leaving us 8ti11 in 8 good financial position to cover ministerial and running costs for several mre y8ar8
R88eNes
The total income fr(xn our investments went down this year by £210 but the value of them increased by £23,064
which vms much better than expected.
Our total investrnents are now valued at £463,902.. made up of Unrestricted £220,513 and Restricted £243,389.
Pathways to th& Past
Pathways to th8 Past. which was sot up to raise funds ts the archaeological dig and subsequent repairs to the
pathways and churchyard, received donations and grants this year of £63,987 and expenditure amounted to
£68,617 leaving a balance of £18,274 to be carried forward to 2022.

Volunteern
We woukl like to recognise and thank all the volunteers who work so hard to make our church the lively and
vibrant communty it is. In particular we want to mention our churchwarden Bob Lane who has worked so
tirelèssly on our behalf (acting also as verger) in the Ghurchyard and the church building and Lynne Lane
for her work on the church's finances. and all the other members of the PCC for their valuable contribution to the
ministry and running of the church.
Structurn, Govomanc• and Managemont
The method of appointment of PCC members is sel out in the Church Representation Rules. The membership of
our PCC consists of the priést-in-charge. churchwardens, the readers and members elected by those who are
on the electoral roll of the church. All who attend our Se￿￿e$ are encouraged to register on the E￿CtOral Roll
and stand for election to the PCC.
The PCC members are responsible for decisions on all matters of general concem and importance to the parish
including deciding on how the funds of the PCC are to be spent.
The full PCC met six times during the year with an average level of attendance of 90%. Given tts wide
responsibililies, the PCC has a number of comrnittees and working groups, each dealing with a particular aspect
