2. Minutes of the Annual Parochial Church Meeting held on 5[th] May 2024

The minutes were approved and signed by the Chair.

3. Matters arising

New Braiswick park is finalised and closed on the accounts side of things as well as the lease being surrendered.

4. Reports:

In addition to the information provided in the written reports, the following points were noted:

a) Electoral roll

We have a new Electoral Roll this year. Quite a few people came off and there have been lots of new people. There are 65 people on the roll in total: 47 residents and 18 non-residents.

b) Proceedings of the PCC – Trustees’ Annual Report (TAR)

The PCC meet once every couple of months. We make a good team and have had fun this year putting together our Parish Profile.

We are grateful to everyone that helps in any way.

c) Financial statements of the PCC

We are deeply grateful to Sarah who has taken on more of a role with the accounts. We are no longer paying the Diocese and instead are paying Sarah. Much thanks are given to Terry Gray who has shown Sarah the ropes and taught her how to use the accounts package.

The Parish Share for 2024 was £57,273 for St. Michael’s. We were delighted that we were able to pay £51,975 of the share. Which was an amazing achievement whilst in vacancy.

New Braiswick Park is now closed. Funds were moved from the Halls to close the account and make it zero.

Sarah gave a brief explanation of the accounts and offered to explain in further detail to anyone that would like to know more.

We are very grateful for the gifts and donations made by everyone. Many have given for many years, could this be an opportunity to look again? Have we increased our donations over the years? If you are able to increase your donation that would be amazing, equally if you are not that is also fine. We thank you all.

d) Fabric and goods

The fabric, goods and ornaments were complete, and no items were missing.

One glass carafe that is used for communion is broken. We are looking into replacing it, but it is not easy with the sizing.

The terrier is all up to date.

e) Proceedings of the Deanery Synod

Thanks to Andy as our Deanery Synod representative. Deanery Synod is an opportunity for Clergy and Lay people to meet 3 times a year in Colchester. There is often very interesting speakers. The representative would

report back to the PCC at the next meeting. Andy has not been able to attend all of the meetings this year but informs the meeting that its is a good opportunity to gain a wider understanding of the Church and look beyond our Parish. It’s interesting to see that often many churches are in the same position.

This led to some interest and in the role and there is a possibility of a new Deanery Synod Member.

f) Groups and organisations

We are grateful to all the groups that have sent reports in. It gives a lovely snapshot of events in both the church and halls and what groups have achieved throughout the year.

The Halls Committee have a great responsibility, and thanks must go to them for all they do as well as our Health & Safety Officer & Joe for the music report.

We are also grateful for the scouts that continue to come to parade. Many groups are now multi faith and therefore their attendance is not as high as it once was. But we usually do get good support from them at Remembrance and on Mothers’ Day. It was lovely to see the scouts as the bells were rung to commemorate VE Day 80[th] anniversary.

5. Elections and appointments:

a) Election of parochial representatives of the laity to the PCC

There were no members elected at the meeting

There is one vacancy for a Deanery Synod Representative.

Graham (Joe) Richardson’s came to the end of their term of service (3years) on the PCC.

We had the following nominations to stand:

The meeting voted in favour.

One PCC members were elected.

There remained four vacancies on the PCC.

The meeting expressed their thanks to the PCC as well as to Hazel & Sarah for what they are doing.

b) Appointment of the independent examiner

Andy Ayton proposed that the meeting approve the appointment of John Mehen again as the independent examiner. Seconded by Kevin Hindle

The meeting voted unanimously in favour.

6. Priest-in-charge report and thanks

In the absence of an incumbent Reverend Hazel Greenland express that is is a real privilege to be in the position to write a vote of thanks and to bring together the depth & or everything & everyone in the Church. Sides /Music/ PowerPoint and more – none of this would happen without you over the last year. There have been words of support and encouragement along the way and although it has been a heard year Hazel is deeply grateful for everyone.

We have indeed had a few wobbles, and we did make a shout out to the Bishop for help. 24 hours later Bishop Roger had several dates in his diary in which to visit the team and offer support and guidance where necessary. It has made a huge difference, as there have been things that have come through to the team, that we lack experience of and his advice and guidance has been amazing.

The team that is continuing to build is amazing. Heartfelt thanks to Lesley, Sue, to Sarah in the office & to the deputy churchwardens and John Chandler who after a difficult year continues to support, guide and help us all.

Huge thanks were given to Reverend Hazel Greenland who has taken on quite a challenge and for that we thank you. You have also shown fabulous pastoral care and have given great spiritual guidance. Thanks, were also expressed for Paul, who continues to support Hazel.

7. Matters of parochial or general interest

Thursday 29[th] May is Ascension Day. There will be morning prayer in Church at 9.15am. There will be a hall working party after the service to trim back some hedges in the car park and to clean the halls kitchen cupboards.

The Quiz night with Fish & Chip Supper takes place on Friday 23[rd] May. There will be a small raffle and another game in the break. Please bring along some cash if you wish to participate.

Thanks to John Chandler who has been in contact with County Broadband and has received the necessary paperwork from the Diocese. We should be having internet installed in the Church on Wednesday 21[st] May.

We have been extremely lucky to have had some great visiting clergy over the past year.

Our advert is on the Diocese website and is also in the Church times. The closing date is in mid-June. Please pray for applications to come in and for guidance during the interview process.

There is a vacancy on the PCC for PCC Secretary. At present it continues to be undertaken by Sarah King, Church Office Administrator. Note of thanks to Sarah for fulfilling this role. Please pray for someone to come forward to take on the role permanently.

Trustees’ Annual Report of the Parochial Church Council of St. Michael’s Church, Myland,Colchester For the year ended 31st December 2025

Aims and Purposes

St Michael’s Parochial Church Council (PCC) currently has the responsibility of co-operating with the Churchwardens, in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. From April 7[th] 2024 St. Michael’s entered vacancy.

The PCC is also specifically responsible for the maintenance of the church and halls complex of St. Michael, Mile End Road, Mile End, Colchester.

Objectives and Activities

The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and to become part of our parish community at St. Michael. The PCC maintains an overview of worship throughout the parish and makes suggestions on how services can involve the many groups that live within the parish. Our services and worship put faith into practice through prayer and scripture, music and sacrament.

When planning our activities for the year, we have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and especially the supplementary guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. In particular, we try to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of the parish community through:

To facilitate this, it is important that we maintain the fabric of the church and our community facilities.

Achievements and Performance

We continue to owe a huge debt of gratitude to Lesley and Sue as Churchwardens and to Sarah in the church office for all that has been achieved in the past year. The Easter and Christmas seasons saw pleasing numbers, given that Christmas Eve was a working day. There have been definite signs of growth in general church numbers, with new members joining across the age spectrum. This is something to celebrate and we rejoice that giving has remained high and that many continue to make a significant contribution to keeping St Michael’s running, especially during the vacancy.

Worship and Prayer

The PCC remains keen to offer a range of services during the week and over the course of the year that our community find both beneficial and spiritually fulfilling, and such services include traditional Holy Communion, quiet morning prayer, wholeness and healing, family worship, an Introduction to Faith course for new members and celebrations or commemorations of significant dates and events.

Regular Services

Our pattern of services has remained consistent for the year. We continue to use the Church all year round for Sunday worship, and requested funerals, memorials and weddings. The prayer diary, which had been running for nearly four years, is now printed in the monthly newsletter and contains a suggested daily Bible Reading and psalm with prayers for people to worship daily in their own home.

All are welcome to attend our services, which remain of a high quality, and preaching has often been inspired.

Church Electoral Roll

There are 65 on the current electoral roll, 47 people reside in the Parish and 18 non-residents.

Milestone and Special Services

As well as our regular services, we enable our community to celebrate and thank God at the milestones of their journey through life, funeral services/burial of ashes/ memorials have carried on throughout 2025, and the demand for our services remains high. Both the Harvest Festival service and the Service of Remembrance were well attended, and we were delighted to welcome representatives of our uniformed organisations. The satellite Foodbank based in the hall foyer is now established every Friday morning and we are grateful to all who volunteer to provide this valuable service to our community.

Music

We are indebted to Joe and John who play so well for us, as they provide excellent leadership in worship, as well as supporting funerals and weddings as they are able. We continue to be grateful to Barbara Cutter, who covers music as and when necessary. It was good to hear the choir again at Christmas.

Deanery Synod / Diocesan Synod / General Synod

We have recently re-elected a member of the PCC to Deanery Synod and to receive reports of what happens at both Diocesan and General Synod. The General Synod has passed legislation and published draft prayers for the blessing of same sex couples in church, this is a big step for those in favour and against such a move, and is now being debated at a Diocesan level, eventually this will come down to individual priests and parishes to decide upon.

St. Michael’s Church and Myland Parish Halls

Due to the ongoing vacancy, we have been unable to give priority to work on the church and hall buildings, though necessary maintenance has been carried out where required.

Pastoral Care

In 2025 we have continued to do our best to care for each other in the church community. Though our numbers are increasing, a small group continues to offer pastoral support to those in our congregation who are struggling. I believe that we do a good job of looking after each other, as we also nurture and befriend those joining us who are new to the faith.

Ray continued to visit Woodland View and to hold a weekly communion service there until his retirement in April 2024. We are sorry that this work has not been able to be carried forward into vacancy, though we would very much hope that this could be resumed once a new incumbent is appointed. The Clergy and churchwardens remain contactable at all times, with email addresses and telephone numbers readily available, including on the website and in newsletters.

Mission and Evangelism

Our Parish Mission Statement continues to be: “Following Jesus’ Great Commission, we will continue the ministry of Jesus and live the message of Jesus in the manner of Jesus”. This mission takes us out into the community; a community that is diverse, dynamic and an ever-growing in population. Our mission to the schools in the parish continues and we were able to deliver Posadas to groups at Myland and Queen Boudicca schools. Both of these schools used the church for their school Christmas concerts, which was wonderful. We would hope to make further connections with the school on New Braiswick Park again and to forge some links with Camulus school as we are able. The annual Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal, although smaller in number, happened, as did a Lent lunch and the Children’s Society box appeal, which continues to be encouraging.

The church is a ‘hub’ to which many people are drawn for a variety of reasons, but we hope and pray for new opportunities to arise for us to develop new ways to encourage parish newcomers, as well as more longstanding residents to be aware of our presence, our mission and the fellowship we offer.

Ecumenical Relationships

The church is a member of Churches Together in Myland (CTIM) and re-committed itself to working in unity in 2023. We have joined together on Palm Sunday for the blessing of the Palms for all our churches and for a service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January, as well as joining together for Carol Singing outside a local food store in the Parish.

Financial Review (Important - Please read it)

The financial review is provided within the attached Treasurer’s Report on Page 8.

Reserves Policy

It is our policy to invest our current funds balances with the CBF Church of England Deposit Fund, and longer term monies with the CCLA Central Board Investment Fund.

Further Information

We are thankful for all those who continued to support our mission and ministry here in Myland, especially since we went into vacancy. We are grateful to all those who have stepped up and will continue to step up to keep the church running smoothly. We hope to encourage greater stewardship so that we may build on our work here, expand our activities across needs and age groups, and enable St. Michael’s Church to continue to serve the parish of Myland in the future.

Structure, Governance and Management

The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules 2022. At St Michael’s, the membership of the PCC consists of ex-officio positions, namely our clergy team, churchwardens, and Deanery Synod representatives as well as members elected by those of the congregation who are on the electoral roll of the church. Other members are co-opted if and when appropriate. All those who attend our services/members of the congregation are encouraged to register on the electoral roll and stand for election to the PCC.

The PCC members are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the parish including deciding on how the funds of the PCC are to be spent.

During 2025, the PCC held six meetings. The average attendance was 87.5%.

In accordance with the Church Representation Rules 2022 Rule M5 (3), the PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have due regard to House of Bishop’s guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults).

St Michael’s Church is situated in Mile End, Colchester. It is part of the Diocese of Chelmsford within the Church of England. The correspondence address is Myland Parish Church Office, Myland Parish Halls, Mile End Road, Colchester, Essex CO4 5DY.

Parochial Church Council of St. Michael’s Myland Treasurer’s Report for the year 2025

St Michaels Myland operated 8 different funds in 2025, held within 3 physical accounts and the following report, together with the Financial Statements, are prepared from a software package specifically designed for use within the Church of England.

Church Overall Funds

This important Fund (Unrestricted) reflects the cost of Christian ministry at St. Michael’s Church, including the contribution made to the Diocesan Parish Share, which largely provides the stipend, pension and housing for the clergy. This remains the case even though we are in vacancy.

Planned giving was down from £34,561 to £29,496 and collections income was down from £4,043 to £3,691. We also received a small legacy donation/bequest which helped boost our income. Parochial fees (weddings and funerals) were also down from £5,752 to £4,534. Other voluntary receipts are down because in 2024 we received a sizeable legacy donation.

This means our total income was down from £125,096 in 2024 to £103,975 in 2025. As a result, we were only able to pay £38,717 of the £58,384 2025 Parish Share.

Costs are being kept under control, as far as we are able and there was a decrease in expenditure from £116,301 in 2024 to £98,681 in 2025. However, the electricity meter was changed to a smart meter in October 2025, and the church has not yet received a bill against the new meter.

At the end of the year, we have retained £5,294 in our total funds.

Myland Parish Halls

Within those figures Halls lettings were down from £39,203 to £37,396.

Repair and Maintenance costs were down from £5,235 in 2024 to £2,130.

Cleaning costs were down slightly from £12,327 to £12,071. This does change throughout the year; in 2025 there were fewer party hires therefore fewer cleans required. We are grateful to our hall cleaners who have not increased their costs in recent years.

The net position was slightly lower than 2024, with a net income of £3,078 last year to a net income of £1854 in 2026. However, the electricity meter was changed to a smart meter in October 2025, and the halls have not received a bill against the new meter.

This results in a total balance of £7,739 as at 31 December 2025 (up from £5,903 last year).

Canon Bolsin Endowment Fund

The capital sum of £5,000 in this fund was donated many years ago and is held in a share account; therefore, the value can regularly go up or down. We are currently permitted to utilise income from the Fund, but not the capital. The balance is currently £4,660 as at 31 December 2025, with a decrease in value during the year of £194.

Fabric Fund

This fund receives gifts given specifically for the fabric of the Parish Church. During the year there was no expenditure taken for maintaining the Church. The balance is £7,298 on the 31 December 2025 which includes interest of £230.

Friends Fund

Although only a small fund yearly standing orders are received from people registered for donations, and this year we received £200 in standing orders and £98 in interest. The amount held as at 31 December 2025 is £3308.

Children’s Ministry Fund

The Children’s ministry fund was a restricted fund with £1500 received from the Mission opportunity fund 2025 from Colchester Deanery. 75% of the funds were transferred to Forest Church for Children’s ministry work in the Parish and the remaining 25% of the funds were used for children’s ministry within St. Michael’s. The 25% was used to buy a variety of Children’s bibles to be given at Baptisms, along with Christmas activity books that were given to Children that visited the Church on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. The fund is now closed.

Conclusion

The PCC say a huge ‘thank you’ for all that our members have given, continue to give, and fund raise, because it is through the regular giving of committed church members and others who value the on-going work and mission of this church that we are in a good position we are, considering we are in vacancy.

Let us encourage each other to look again at what God is asking of us, as individuals and as a worshipping community, so that Gods name can be glorified in St. Michael’s.

It is up to each one of us to respond to God’s prompting through the work of the Holy Spirit. May we all be richly blessed by refocusing on what it is God is calling us to do in the parish of Myland.

During 2025 we have remained without a full time incumbent and are currently still in vacancy. Whilst this has brought new challenges, it’s important to acknowledge in particular and offer special thanks and heartfelt gratitude to Lesley and Sue, our churchwardens and to Sarah in the church office. They have each continued to work tirelessly, giving so much of their time to make sure that the church and the halls run smoothly. Thank you so much!

We would also want to thank all those who faithfully read, pray intercessions, assist at Holy Communion, welcome so warmly all visitors and new members of the congregation; our wonderful musicians who lead us so ably and prayerfully in worship; all who present and prepare PowerPoints during worship; all who clean and keep the church safe, wind the church clock and do the many jobs that mean that Sundays happen and the church is as well-maintained as our finances allow; to those who support us at funerals and weddings; those who serve on the PCC. We have been particularly grateful to our visiting clergy for their faithful ministry during this time and of course, to John Chandler for his invaluable service with us. Thank you all.

We would like to ask for your continuing prayers in the hope that the appointment process might soon be nearing its conclusion, God willing. Please do continue to pray God’s person and the right person to choose to come to St Michael’s and work with us. We trust always that God will answer our prayers, and we know that God is always good.

We continue to have been blessed this year with new members in our congregation and we welcome them warmly. During October we ran a Start Course, which is an introduction to faith course, which 5 people attended. It has been very exciting to see how God is working in the lives of those who are joining and swelling our numbers.

We are deeply grateful to all who give of their time, their skills and their financial support, to support the work of the church here. Many of you have been faithfully giving over many years and for that we say a huge Thank you. Please consider if you are able to give any more, whether as a one-off gift or in more regular giving. We understand that times are tough for many, but if you can help, particularly at the current time, that would be much appreciated.

CHURCHWARDENS’ REPORT

Fabrics and Goods

Thanks, must be given to Hazel, John and our amazing visiting vicars for their continued support during 2025. We have been in vacancy for the whole year.

To carry out our roles effectively we rely on the contributions of our valued Deputy Churchwardens and all Church Assistants. We are most grateful and thankful for their efforts and to all that help in so many ways. However, so much is falling on so few and we are struggling with the manpower. Could you help in 2026?

Sadly, during 2025 we continue to have issues in the Churchyard, regarding, grass cutting and maintenance in general as well as some grave issues. We did however have several trees removed.

The Quinquennial inspection was completed in 2023, and the PCC continue to concentrate on any issues for the Church as and when funds allow.

PCC SECRETARY’S REPORT

As a Parochial Church Council (PCC), we are responsible for making decisions on matters of general importance and concern for the Parish of St Michael. We meet regularly to consult together and to support and further the mission and ministry of the Church.

The PCC held six meetings during 2025, with decisions made as required and in accordance with the Church Representation Rules 2022. The average attendance at meetings was 87.5%.

If you are interested in joining the PCC or would like to support the Church in another way, please feel free to speak to a member of the team.

COLCHESTER DEANERY SYNOD

Lay representatives plus clergy from all the Anglican churches in the Colchester Deanery usually meet three times per year, to hear what’s going on in the Diocese and nationally, and to discuss and share ideas about how we can work together more effectively across Colchester. During 2025, however, it was decided that the Synod meeting in October would not take place, as we held our first Deanery Day instead. Please find below a short report on the Deanery Synod Meetings held during 2025.

12th March 2024 – At St. Michael’s Church, Myland, Colchester

Our speaker for this Synod was Wendy Lidgate, Programme Manager for Colchester Episcopal Area. Wendy introduced herself and explained her role. She also explained the background behind the Strategic Mission and Ministry Investment Board (SMIBB) and how her role fits into it. Wendy’s role is to help us all plan how each and every parish can tap into this fund.

18th June 2024 – At St. Peter’s Church, Boxted

Our speaker for this Synod was Sam Fowler, From Christian Youth Outreach (CYO). Sam started off by introducing himself and a little bit about what CYO do. CYO's vision and aim is for every school in the Colchester area to be regularly prayed for by at least one Colchester Church, and that every Colchester Church will be regularly praying for at least one local Colchester school - at least once every term. Sam stated that at the moment an amazing 45% of schools across Colchester are prayed for by churches. They would like to get this to 100%.

SAFEGUARDING REPORT

I took up the position of Parish Safeguarding Officer for the Chaplaincy of St Michael’s on 1 August 2025, succeeding Sarah, who had served in the role for a number of years.

Since my appointment, I have completed and passed all mandatory safeguarding training, as well as several additional voluntary courses offered by the Diocese. I also attended a Safeguarding Service in October 2025, officiated by Bishop Guli, and continue to take part in the Diocese’s monthly online safeguarding drop-in sessions.

I am now in receipt of all safeguarding records, which are stored securely in accordance with Church of England GDPR requirements.

At the time of writing, the Chaplaincy is fully compliant with Church of England safeguarding policies and procedures, including those relating to policy adoption, awareness, and training.

There have been no new safeguarding cases during 2025, and this position has continued into the New Year.

Good progress has also been made in adopting and updating the Parish Safeguarding Dashboard, which is now being used effectively to monitor and manage safeguarding activity.

HALLS MANAGEMENT TEAM

The Halls Management Team is a small team of people, working together to help manage and run the halls. Following Ray Gibbs retirement and his resignation as chair of the team we continue as a team of 5 with Sarah King (Office Manager) acting as chair. We continue to meet every few months to discuss issues that have arisen and need attention; It is also our responsibility to make important decisions about the running and maintenance of the halls. We have a set budget that we can agree on for expenditure, after which we must take any large purchases through to the PCC.

In 2025 we have continued to discuss the remaining issues from the quinquennial inspection, and it is the opinion of the team that the items not already dealt with remain financially unviable but will remain on our list for monitoring and discussion. Other items that we have been dealt with include the boiler in the kitchen is broken and is too costly to repair so we have purchased 2 new kettles. Various minor repair jobs have been completed, including removing broken door handles and replacing with push plates. The lock on the office door has been replaced for security reasons and new keys have been distributed only to those who need access to the office. The main hall door is still giving us some problems Kevin has again done some adjustments and it seems to be a lot better. The small hall needs decorating. We are waiting for a quote to do this.

The budgets are as usual being closely monitored; the letting fees have remained the same throughout 2025 and continue to be monitored on a regular basis.

Party bookings have remained low throughout the year. Regular bookings seem to be a bit up and down through the year with some cutting hours. The hall’s finances have remained fairly steady through the year.

HEALTH & SAFETY REPORT

Our congregation numbers are still continuing to grow, and we are regularly getting new members joining the congregation and staying with us. Potentially this could give us some Health & Safety issues, however I am pleased to say that we continue to maintain a safe Church and during the past year we have had no major Health & Safety issues.

Once again, the Christmas Tree Decorating on the Saturday before the tree lighting service went very well with everyone working sensibly and not taking any unnecessary risks. This is always an enjoyable morning for all those who come along. The Christmas Eve Carols by Candlelight service was very well attended and at one point we had people queuing to come into Church. Whilst this is a really lovely position to be in it did mean we had a last minute rush to seat the back area of the Church with additional chairs to keep people safe, bearing in mind we were using lit candles for light. All went very well with no problems but we should revue our thinking for this years service.

During one of the local primary school’s carol concert rehearsals we did have a couple of pupils feeling poorly but this was dealt with using the correct procedures by both Church and school staff.

Our good Health & Safety record is mainly due to everyone who enters the Church, for whatever reason, taking a responsible and sensible approach to theirs and everyone else’s safety. Thank you everyone.

MUSIC AT ST. MICHAEL’S

The past year has been very much ‘Status Quo’ as regards music for worship and there is little to report by way of innovation or development. Having said that the musical accompaniment for regular services has been provided by the faithful team of Joe Richardson and John Barrett. Words for hymns are prepared by Suzanne, Emma, Justin, Aref and Connor and projected on to our large screen for the congregation. Organ music for weddings and funerals is usually provided by Joe Richardson and occasionally by Barbara Cutter. Together with ‘Pre’ and ‘Post’ service music this is offered on both piano and organ.

There have been no regular singers or instrumentalists at weekly services but the group gathered again to lead the Carols by Candlelight service in December. This was a memorable and uplifting experience for all.

The ongoing hymn choices are made by our two musicians Joe and John. Music for worship is a very important element of our Sunday morning service and features both traditional hymn singing and some less formal settings.

I pray that we may discern God’s Will for the future Ministry of Music in our church life.

CHURCH OFFICE REPORT

The Office continues to be a very busy environment, even more so as we have not had an incumbent since April 2024.

Our sincere thanks go to Margaret for continuing to prepare the Baptism certificates. Margaret has carried out this role for many years, and her dedication is very much appreciated. Thank you also to everyone who helps in any way — your support truly makes a difference.

It is hard to believe that two years have now passed since we said our farewells to Reverend Ray Gibbs. While there have been a number of challenges during this time, we have worked through them together. Special thanks must go to Hazel, Lesley, and Sue, who have been absolutely wonderful and have worked tirelessly with and alongside me throughout this uncertain period — even on the days when simply keeping the office running was made possible by their endless support and much-needed cups of tea.

BIBLE STUDY GROUPS

The Bible Study Group continue to meet on Zoom on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 – 8.30 pm, where we share what we have learned from the sermon the previous Sunday. This also gives us the opportunity to ask questions about the passages of scripture we heard on Sunday morning or about the sermon itself, usually directly from the person who wrote it and this gives rise to many interesting and informative discussions. It is a pattern that seems to suit this group very well.

This time on a Wednesday is open to everyone of course, and we would encourage anyone who can join us to do so. We love to read and discuss the Bible together. The studies aren’t too deep; the focus is on finding exciting and surprising things in God’s word.

Over the course of the year, we have been delighted to welcome new members of the congregation to the group, which is growing steadily and has around 6-8 regular attenders.

Advent gave us the opportunity to do something different, where we took time for meditation and reflection on “waiting for Christmas and Jesus’ birth” and this has given us a very different perspective on experiencing the reality of God in our lives and living in the scripture we read together.

During Lent we held a Lent Course – 4 Great Loves! – where we looked at Loving God, Loving God’s Word, Loving God’s people and Loving God’s purpose. It’s always good to choose a different direction for study and it’s encouraging and challenging to hear God speak of God’s plans for us and the resources available to use through grace.

ST. MICHAEL’S YOUTH GROUP

St Michael's Youth Group continue to meet once a month, on the second Sunday of the month. We have increased the length of time that we meet which is now from 3pm - 5pm. We advertised further last year via local churches and posters. We also looked at the items in the shed that we inherited but unfortunately, none were suitable for use therefore, these were recycled or taken to the tip. This will also clear space for future investments.

For our final meeting of 2025, we were invited to attend Forest Church where we made stars out of twigs and twine, whilst each lit our own camp candle. We each learnt how to light a fire under Forest Leader supervision and enjoyed the peace and excitement of being amongst the trees whilst reflecting on scripture, eating toasted marshmallows, s'mores, drinking hot chocolate and enjoying a new experience together.

We are looking forward to a new opportunity of meeting with young people from across Colchester in 2026.

Although numbers are still low, we will remain available for those regular members who continue to enjoy competitive board and card games together.

The knit & Natter group is held fortnightly on Wednesday morning for 10.00am until 11.30am in the small hall.

All are welcome to join us for crafting, knitting, refreshments and fellowship.

MYLAND BABY & TODDLER GROUP

Myland parent and toddler group had a very successful year in 2025, in regards to providing a weekly get together for parents and carers with their early year’s children.

We have seen new members join throughout the year, each enjoying the activities on offer in a relaxed environment with the opportunity to grab a coffee and have a chat with likeminded people from the community. Some come regularly, some less frequently, but all know there is a place for them when needed.

Throughout the year, our crafts have been themed with what’s going on around us. And At the end of the year, one of our longstanding Grandmothers, presented themselves as Santa at our Christmas party, and the children were overjoyed. All that came contributed to the buffet and Raffle and it really showed the nature of community spirit.

MYLAND MOTHERS’ UNION

The year 2025 has been a very interesting year as we have had some very memorable occasions. Some highs and lows but we have all experienced the wonderful love and support we have for each other.

In February we had our A.G.M. This was chaired by the lovely Ivy Dix. All officers and Branch Leader were voted to their various offices. Meeting concluded with a members social catch-up as we had not seen each other for quite awhile as we have no meeting in January.

At our March meeting we had a lady visit us called April Best and her visit to Romania. It was both very informative exploring the wide culture diversity as well as the land of the country and the vast difference between us haveing running water and all the modern facilities that we very much take for granted. All the members enjoyed the steep learning curve in what we were educated about. It brought home to us just how much our fellow dwellers on this tiny planet of ours have to suffer so much while we in the UK live a very comfortable and modern life.

In April we had our Post East Communion with Revd Hazel Greenland. It was a lovely Communion service where we enjoyed remembrance of peace, love and fellowship as we journeyed to the Cross of Good Friday and the Celebration of Jesus/ resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Our May meeting was the Branches Annual Lunch outing which was held at The Cricketers at Eight Ash Green. This was a lovely occasion to have a socal gathering and the delightful event was enjoyed by 12 of the members. Sadly many members were unable to be with us this year as many were either ill or recuperating from various viruses, operations or mobility issues. But we held them all in prayer, love and our warmth of fellowship.

In June we had a speaker from the China Inland Mission organisation talking to us. Dorothy Chadborn was both informative, interesting and managed to put across a very difficult talk in a very gentle way. China is rather like an onion! Hard to get into, multi-layered people and culture that is both joyful but at times can make one cry at the turmoil in such a vast country. The members thoroughly enjoyed seeing the various mementos that were brought to the meeting and to hear that Dorothy had connections with Hudson Taylor when he was a China Missionary. We also remember the fun we had trying to get various assorted tiny nuts out of a bowl using just chopsticks!

July was our Annual Strawberry Tea meeting. For which we gave a grateful Thank You to Adsa for kindly providing the Strawberrys and for Rev ld John Chandler in organising them for us and for Anne Price collecting them. Also a huge Thank You to Ivy Dix for providing all the wonderful scones!

Approximately 32 tickets were sold. Those that came had a lovely time. We also had a quiz with chocolates as a prize.

August saw the branch have its Coffee Morning. We had a Bring I nl Buy stall which several of the local city businesses dontated to. A cake stall, a Raffle table as well as the ever popular Refreshments table. This event was very busy and provided much laughter and joy to the people who came. Also as it was held mid-week, (first Wednesday in August), people were not tied up with weekend jobs and so had time to come and unwind with a welcome cup of tea or coffee have a lovely slice of cake and do a bit of shopping at the same time. As well as take some cake with then to have at home. A lot of hard work was put into this event, but it was done joyfully and provided much enjoyment to those that did come.

At our September meeting we had Shelley Bell who is the Befriending co-ordinator of Age Well. A very worthwhile organisation. These lovely people provide all sorts of help be it testing your old fire alarm, getting a new one or even having mobility aids fitted at your home for free they will get you the help you need. Several of the members took up the offers of help with their lives and wanting to live as long as they can independently live. We cannot thank Shelley who came enough as she put across a very hard and in some cases a delicate matter in a very lovely way. We all knew the charity Age Concern but we did not know that this is the new name of them Age Well. We all have tried to pass on the knowledge we learnd at this valuable meeting to others who need a bit of extra help that is very personal to them and their individual needs. The support that Age Well gives is so valuable and very much understated especially in a world where so many live on their own and need support or a family that needs support themselves looking after others.

October was our Harvest month and we were delighted that Rev ld John Chandler shared some of his wonderful thoughts on the theme of Harvest. We were so pleased to have John with us and his singing on various themes of Harvest were a

joy to hear as well as brought much merriment to the members. A lovely afternoon and the members remarked at how much Harvest means to them. The members also kindly brought items to support FoodBank. We had quite a table full of items that were very generously given even more so in the current financial times we unfortunately are going through. So it meant even more such was their kind generous gifts in making sure that whoever is out there is seen as their fellow neighbour that is in need.

Our November meeting was titled A Stitch In Time! We had the Branch Leader give a talk about her life as a textile artist. It all started apparently when given a small sewing kit of a train when around six years old. (Yes we were surprised when we found out that our Branch Leader is a huge steam train fan!). We learned about her doing historical costumes the design and construction of them. The demonstrations that Maria does around the Uk. Also the history of embroidery and the fact of where to source the correct fabrics so they are of an authentic nature. We also learned of the commission work that Maria does from doing the replacement of the silver oystershells on the Ladies Mayrol gown of Colchester City to the latest work of repairing of church kneelers for a church in Essex. (Moths apparently are the terror of textiles!). We were also shown the set of five burse and veils that were donatated to Maria's parents church for the use in their communion services. Stitches that several members commented on were very life-like! It was Maria's way of thanking God for the very unusual talent she has. The photos and the samples of embroidery that were shown made a very enjoyable meeting and was much commented on afterwards by the members. As Maria herself said we are all stiched and put together by God! Also on the 9th of November, a Poppy Wreath was laid at the Remembrance Service held at the War Memorial on behalf of the Mothers/ Union Branch. We wished to show our grateful thanks and prayers

for all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. The two minutes silence was observed on this Remembrance Sunday.

December saw our Carol Service which was open to anyone who would have liked to come and join us. It was a lovely occasion and a huge Thank You to the Rev ld Hannah Cooper for leading the service and the lovely organist Clive!

(Wonderful playing!). We had a lovely time singing carols and listening to Bible readings of the Christmas message. We also observed the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Basied violence. Something that we observe leading up to Christmas as we know Christmas can be a very difficult time for some people. There was also the presentation of long service certificates to several of the Mothers/ Union members to mark their years of being a Mothers/ Union member. The longest one on this occastion was fourty-five years! This was followed by some wonderful refreshments that were kindly provided by the Mothers' Union members and was much enjoyed by everyone who attended. Also in December we decorated a Christmas tree in St. Michael's Church to represent Mothers/ Union in their Christmas tree event.

Joint Branch Leader and Secretary’s Report

MILE END ART GROUP

The last year has seen numbers at an all-time low, averaging 3 per session. Additionally, our chairman had to leave for health reasons. With such a low number of members the group was no longer viable, so sadly we had to make the decision to discontinue it.

Although a request had been publicised asking for more members and fresh blood to help run the group, there were no offers in this respect, and so the group was formally wound up on Friday 27[th] . March 2026, (what would have been the first meeting of 2026).

The group constitution states that:

“In the event that a resolution to dissolve the organisation is passed and any assets remain after the settlement of all proper debts and liabilities, these shall not be divided amongst the members but shall be transferred to a charity having aims similar to those of a similar organisation namely, “Community Action in Mile End”

Community Action in Mile End no longer exists, and nothing similar has replaced it, so it was agreed that the assets be donated to a local charity which broadly meets the above criteria.

1ST MYLAND SCOUT GROUP

2025 has been a good year for Scouting at Myland, each section has been busy with lots of fun enjoying some great nights away the Beavers joined two other groups for a sleepover at Jungle Adventure and have been to Thorrington with the District for the Sausage Sizzle sleepover.

The Cubs have attended a Spring Camp with two other groups attended the County Mega Camp alongside 1600 Cubs from across the county and enjoyed two days and a sleepover inside Legoland. The cubs and scout also had a fantastic joint sleepover at Go Bananas

The scouts have been to a Jamboree on the air camp talking to scouts from across the world and braved the cold at the District Winter Camp.

I am pleased to say numbers are good in all sections.

Some of the things the group have been up to during the weekly meetings are:

The Beavers have had an international night, have designed and made machines from junk modelling, completed the photographer badge, shown their collections or hobbies, done some gardening and first aid and been to Highwoods country park. They have made kites, completed the Air activities badge, been to the woods and cooked marshmallows on a fire, done some tent pitching, designed their own game, had a performance evening to their parents, celebrated Ye Olde English Halloween with traditional activities and had a visit from Reverend Hazel to talk about Advent, 9 Beavers have achieved their top award.

The Cubs have completed the home safety badge, made snakes for Chinese New Year, have made community maps, visited the foodbank, had an evening with Essex police and have opened the 1[st] Myland time capsule which was made for the Millenium it was lovely looking back on lots of memories from the year 2000, Bill Miller is our only leader who is still actively part of the group, the cubs have made a new time capsule to be opened in 2050. They have been to Highwoods country park, completed the World Environment badge and the space badge, and had a visit from guide dogs for the blind.

The cubs and scouts had a fantastic time Sailing in Mersea with the 17[th] Colchester Sea scouts and Five cubs have achieved their top award.

The Scouts have done a youth led evening, celebrated Burns night, have had a science evening doing experiments, looked at different festivals, had a survival skills evening, and completed 3-night hikes. They have learnt about farming and done a litter pick around Myland, worked on the Environmental conservation badge, done den building and backwoods cooking in the woods, discussed current affairs, had a practical skills evening teaching the scouts to make cups of tea, iron and wire a plug, had a DIY evening and made guys for Guy Fawkes night then went woods to burn them on a bonfire, 3 scouts have achieved their top award.

2025 looks set to be a good year, with the group turning 70 years old!

MYLAND RAINBOWS

Myland Rainbows had a very busy start to 2025 celebrating Chinese New year, Mardi Gras (carnivals) and Mother's Day. But the highlight for the Spring term was our joint unit sleepover on 22[nd] February as we took part in Girlguiding Anglia's PJ party to mark World Thinking Day. Always a great experience for our older girls. As we moved into the summer term, both units completed a fun challenge badge 'Safari @ home'. The girls also attended the clue - dun- it event hosted by Essex North East County at St Mary School. 2[nd] Myland visited Chesterwell Co-Op as part of their Fruit and Veg badge. 1[st] Myland spent a

lovely evening strawberry picking in Boxted. Both units ended the summer term in the park at Highwoods Country Park. The autumn term saw the Rainbow units celebrating Diwali and looked at the 'Dig for Victory' campaign to mark Remembrance. For the fourth consecutive year, Myland Rainbows took part in our County Commissioners 'Winter Good Turn' challenge collecting donations for the food bank. We always enjoy making tree ornaments to take home and for the older girls to decorate the tree in Church. We rounded off 2025 with the annual Girlguiding screening at the Odeon which was Zootroplis 2. We held our end of term Christmas parties at Go Bananas.

While we try and give the Rainbows new experiences throughout the year, we always find time to focus on the Girlguiding Rainbow programme too. Many complete interest badges at home, skills builder badges at meetings to achieve various theme awards. Most Rainbows end their time with us achieving a Bronze award, a few get Silver and very occasionally, 1 or 2 will get a Gold award. They've really showed a massive commitment to Rainbows and Guiding to get to this level, but we are proud of all our Rainbows for trying to do their best.

The teams of 1[st] and 2[nd] Myland Rainbows also want to take this opportunity to say Thank you to the Halls team for their support of our units.

We are delighted to report that we now have 13 Rangers attending regularly – a fantastic number and a real testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of the girls.

It has been another incredibly full and rewarding year for our Rangers. They have shown resilience, teamwork, creativity and a real willingness to take on new challenges. We are very proud of everything they have achieved and look forward to another exciting year ahead.

MYLAND PRE SCHOOL CIC

During January we celebrated Winnie the Pooh day, Burns Night, Australia day and Chinese New Year In February we celebrated Our feelings for child mental health week, Valentines and Wales.

We enjoyed pancakes for Shrove Tuesday on the 4[th ] of March.

We welcomed an ex preschool pupil in for a week during March for her work experience. During the week of 17[th] -21[st] March we wore red for red nose day and raised funds for Comic Relief. We raised a total of £30.00

On the 25[th] March we welcomed mums and grandmas into preschool to celebrate Mother’s Day and we rewarded them with cups of tea and coffee and cake!

On the 29[th ] of April we had a Bag to School collection where we collected 161kg and raised £32 for preschool funds.

In May and again in October we had Rob Sambrook photography in preschool taking photos of us all. The commission from both of those visits raised £108.64 for preschool funds.

Friday 16[th] May saw us go off on our annual trip to Easton Farm Park with all the children leaving us to go to school. Kings coaches were our transport and we had a great day hugging bunnies and having a tractor and trailer ride as well as seeing all of the animals.

Friday 23[rd] May saw Jackie retire from preschool after 22 years service.

On Wednesday 11[th] June we held a sponsored walk. We walked around the local area and were sponsored to do so. £350.50 was raised for preschool funds. We used £175 of the money to purchase a new water tray.

The walk was followed by a Teddy Bears picnic in the garden with parents/carers and younger siblings joining in as well.

We welcomed dads and grandads into preschool on 13[th] June for our Fathers day morning. They joined in our activities with us and enjoyed a cup of tea or coffee and a bacon roll afterwards.

We keep our links with local primary schools and during May, June and July we had assorted phone calls and meetings with teachers from Myland, Queen Boudica Primary, Braiswick, Heathlands, Boxted and Camulos schools. We also sent across reports for every child to the school they were transitioning to.

We welcomed the children who would be starting with us in September and their parents into preschool on the 25[th] June for an open afternoon.

The academic year of 2024/2025 closed on the 18[th] July with us holding our pre-school graduation. All the children leaving us to go to school donned their mortar boards and sang to their relatives and then were presented with a certificate and a book to commemorate their time at pre-school.

On Wednesday 3[rd] September the staff team went for a meal at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel to celebrate Jackie’s retirement as well as Megan’s 30[th] and Liliana’s 40[th] birthdays.

We returned to pre-school on the 5[th ] of September welcoming lots of new children to our fold.

On Friday 10[th] October we wore yellow to raise funds for children’s mental health. We raised £81 for Young Minds

We collected items for the foodbank and did a harvest display in the Church on Friday 10[th] October ready for their harvest festival on 12[th] October

On Tuesday 11[th] November we went to the Church and heard the last post and then a silence and reveille for Remembrance day

The week of 10[th] – 14[th] November saw us having dress up days for Children in Need and we raised £29 for them.

We continue to encourage our parents to use Easy Fundraising to help support us and our last payment of the year on 13[th] November saw us raise a total of £230.53 during the year for preschool funds through this.

Once again, we took great pleasure in decorating a Christmas tree for the window at church and the children enjoyed the experience of visiting the church and seeing all of the trees with their lights on.

We all dressed up in our Christmas jumpers and dresses etc for the week of 8[th] -12[th] December and we raised £23.35 for Save the Children

We held our Nativity in the church on the 16[th] December. We performed ‘It’s A Baby’ to our families and friends and welcomed them back to the hall for refreshments afterwards.

Our year finished on the 17[th] of December with our Christmas party. Party games, party food and a visit from Santa’s helper with a present for every child meant we all had a great time.

We received some devastating news in November and so on the 19[th] of December the staff team attended the funeral of Jackie.

Throughout the year the staff have continued with their professional development completing various online training courses such as safeguarding and prevent. They have also attended local support meetings run by Essex County Council, safeguarding forums and conferences and Special Educational Needs Cluster meetings

The preschool continues to run smoothly and have an excellent reputation within the community and wider area. We have a Facebook page and continue to strive to provide the best service to children of the community that we possibly can.
