Trustees Report for year ending 30 April 2023
Introduction to Christopher's Smile
In October 2006, Christopher Capel then aged 4 was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, an aggressive
paediatric brain tumour. Following 21 months battling the disease Christopher lost his fight for lrfe in
June 2CK18, nine days before his 51Xth birthday. Christopher was the only child of Karen and Kevin
Capel. Following their tragic loss. Karen and Kevin Capel wanted to help children with cancer in the
future by funding research into new treatments for childhood cancer.
Background to Christopherfs Smile:
Chrlstopherfs Smile started in October 2(K)8 and was registered as a charty by the Charity Commission
by a Declaration of Trust Deed dated ltrh May 2009. The charity raises fundin8 exclusively for
paediatric cancer research wlth a bias towards the development and approval of genomic diagnostics
for paediotric solid tumours. Christopherfs Smile has a fimi principle that every penny of a donation
should be used for the cause for which it was given. The charity has continued with this principle for
the financial year 2022- 2023.
Aims and Objectlves
After Christophels death, we wanted to make a difference for chlldren with cancer in the future.
Although there are many charities that raise funds for different aspects of childhood cancer, we saw
the only way of breaking this terrible cycle was to fund research. We had seen first hand the efflcacv
and side effects of current treatments ￿th In Chrlstopher and the other children in the Royal
Marsden's Children's Oncolo8y ward. We learned that if a child surrfives, their life and that of their
family is never the same again. It was these memories that led to our charitls vision:
"Our vislon Is that every child diagnosed with Childhood cancer will not only 5urvfve but ￿a¢h
adulthood enjoying a good quality of life."
This vislon has bèen translated into our chariivs objects as:
l. Provlde funding to non-profft making ￿searCh organisations that furthers research Into
paediatric cancers.
2. Raise awa￿ne$S of the needs of non-profit making research organisations that further
research into paediatric cancers.
3. Ralse aWa￿nesS in the general population of the need for fundlng the research into paedlatrlc
cancers.
Christopherfs Smile is a target based organlsation. We made the decision to Set a fundraising tar8et
in order for our supporters to know what their money is to be spent on. We also believe that
charity's funds Should be spent or allocated the earliest oprM)rtunity-

Christopherfs Smile continues to hold the following set of values. When we stsrted the charty we
decided to adhe￿ to a set of principles which we believed in and which our donors would ￿SpeCt.
> Every penny of every donation would be used for the cause for which it was given.
> Costs should be kept to a minimum and we do as much ourselves as we can.
> Where we need to buy in products or expertise we would control costs vigorouslv.
> Every donor or supporter should be shown exactly where their donation has been spent.
> Build a relationship with donors and value every donation no matter how small.
> Ensure that funds are spent in the best way possible to get maximum benefit from them.
We set these objectives for our first year and our aim is that they will remain in place while
Christopherfs Smile is still needed to raise funds for childhood cancer research.
Paediatric Oncology Artlvlties and Infiuentlal Factors May 2022 -
Aprll 2023
This year has been the third year Whe￿ Christopherfs Smile's activities have been influenced greatly
by the Covid 19 pandemic. As the UK slowly exits from Covid 19 ￿StrICtl0n$, the pandemic is likely to
leave a legacy In a number of areas of fundraising actNity. Notably these are-
A huge reduction in the use of cash and a greatertransition to Spending uslng cards or cashless
systems such as Apple Payi Google Pay and Paypal.
Face to face fundraising actiVit￿S have not existed during the pandemic and have not
recovered partly as a legacy of the pandemic and also due to the current cost of living crisis.
Whlle worklng from home is slowfy ￿duCin& socialising both inside and outside of the
workplace and involvement in charity sUPPOrt activrties is eXtrerne￿ low compared to pre-
pandemlc levels.
A reappraisal of people's finances durin8 the pandemlc and the prioritisatlon of famlly
spendlng durlng the current financial crisis resulting in fewer charity donat￿n$ especlally as
charities became less visible durin8 the pandemic period.
The factors above have meant a huge decline in income forchrtstopherfs Smlbe. Thls decline In income
has meant a slower growth in our reser¥es. Our 'Liquld Biopsies for Chlldren. project finished at the
end of De￿mber 2021 and while this project has resulted in MO￿ evidence for Llquid Biopsies to be
used in NHS Standard of Care, our high level objertive of includin8 brain tumours in this work was not
successful. This was due to a number of fartors. the chief factor being the availability of cerebral spinal
fluid for genomic analysis. Thi5 issue must be corrected before we as a charity will fund projects to
8ain enough evidence for Liquid Biopsies to be used in NHS Standard of Care for children with brain
tumour5.
Funding future Projects
The trustees of Christopherfs Smile take their ￿spOnsibl11t1e5 for the spending of donors, funding very
seriously. We will not fund a project just to say we have a project in progress regardless of the benefits
that the project initiators clairn. The trustees are still committed to the genomic analysis of brain
tumour DNA in order to assist in the furtheran￿ of treatments for paediatric brain tumours.
Paediatric brain tumours kill more children than any other type of paediatric cancer. Our previouslv
funded work on liquid biopsies for brain tumours has proved 2 thing5: the first is that cUr￿nt

mainstream technologies are not sensitNe enough to analyse the miniscule amounts of tumour DNA
in the bloodstream and secondly that obtaining cerebral spinal fluid for analysis is beset with
procedural and clinical hurdles. There is a ray of Ilght on the h0ri20n though. Long read sequencing
offers far higher sensitNity than current panel sequencing and when we can responsibly proceed with
a project utilising this exciting technology we will do so. We fully realise that we have not funded a
project for some time but the trustees would rather wait and fund a project that has a chance of
success which could provide clinicians with vitsl genomic data on a child's brain tumour without the
need for invasive neurosurgery. This approath is backed by the trustees and if successful would
provide a real step change in the way the most aggressive paediatric brain tumours could be analysed.
Our aim is to provide cllnicians wtth the tumour genomic data in order for the most appropriate
targeted drugs to be used to ochieve the best therapeutic effect.
