2021 COMMODORES REPORT

AGM – 18[th] Nov 2021

Another out of the ordinary year, who would have guessed.

I should mention the Covid word as we cannot ignore it and I believe we did a fantastic job as a club to manage the risk and open up the clubs activities in a safe and secure manor. I know there were other clubs watching our approach, as our dashboard changed on a frequent basis on the club website.

What I am very pleased to announce, even with all this uncertainty, the club has successfully moved forward. The pandemic has given us the opportunity to think about the things we do, look at the ways we have done them in the past and make positive change. As a club membership we should all be incredibly positive about what we have achieved and what the future will bring.

We continue to have a superb committee, full of proactive people and it’s been fantastic from my point of view to make new friends, have a laugh and at the same time, carry out the clubs activities and make improvements in all aspects of the club.

The Monday evening meetings continue to happen, I think we have found regular updates rather than one longer monthly meeting, gives some focus to activities and we can deal with any issues straight away rather than wait a month. It might sound like a challenge, but people dip in and out of them and they have turned into a regular social event. Enjoying something that could be a chore.

The Whatsapp management is still in full swing. Keeping people informed has worked, we have direct contact with our membership, University teams, Yorkshire Water, class associations and the RYA.

We now have a Microsoft Sharepoint site, so all our documents are in one place and it is easier to share information. If you are at the AGM I’ll show you what that looks like.

Disappointing that we had a break in during the year, with two of our rib engines stolen, container doors, club house doors and windows damaged, and bizarrely an Optimist which was out on long term loan to Joss. Thank you to everyone who came together during that day and following week to make the club secure and to begin the hassle of making insurance claims. Of which the main claim is still in progress. Well done to Joss in claiming for the Optimist of which, we are looking to reinvest that money back into the club boats.

We should recognise the local sailing clubs we received support from, particularly Glossop SC who loaned us rib engines, which allowed us to continue with kids week and several other events.

Sadly, recently we lost Jane Evans through long term illness and I would like to recognise the help and support she brought to the club and to myself behind the scenes.

Standing down from the committee this year is John Coulton, many years of support to the club. Many of the ideas on how to move the club forwards came from John and I look forward to the continued phone calls on how I can do that further.

Something that happened during the year highlighted what the club was all about. When Josie had a very nasty fall and ended up in hospital for several weeks, I was very pleased to see so many people rally around in her support but also to pick up the mantle with all the activities she carries out for the club and there are a lot ! Gladly, Josie is well on the way to a good recovery. I would like to thank Christine, Ed, Jill, Emily, Nicholas, Joss, everyone on the committee and I’m sorry if I have missed anyone, for standing up and keeping the place running.

Youth (the clubs future)

Our youth committee members continued to make a fabulous contribution into the meetings, it was great to have that perspective and it made a huge difference to the Topper and School events, Laser open meeting, in particular. Well done to Charli and Oliver and we wish them well for the adventures into the post school world.

I’m glad to announce that Chloe Mills has joined the committee, welcome onboard, there is space available for someone else if you would like to be involved.

Sailing Activities (Vice Commodore Jerry Hannabuss, Olli Mills, Charli Fensom)

A huge thank you to Jerry Hannabuss for his work and contribution to everything sailing at the club.

Making sure we had rescue boat cover, race officer, results and the risk assessments all in line, to allow this all to happen.

Once we were able to introduce sailing activities, Jerry and team, planned out the Ad-hoc sailing, with all the associated restriction. I was impressed to see how this worked out, small groups of people getting together to go sailing, any evening of the week, whenever the weather suited. This got us going again. This progressed into running additional social sailing evenings, introduced racing, including additional starts for rising stars, youth, juniors who wanted a more relaxed version of racing.

Its been very pleasing to see a good turnout of boats throughout the year, very positive to see the kids on the water having fun, whether that be pottering around and or joining in the racing. We do not mind what any member does, you can race, socially sail or just potter around, just come and have a go on the water. It is about the fun in a safe environment.

I had a number of conversations with senior RYA team members during the year and the sailing activities we carry out at the club, racing, training, taster sessions, adhoc sailing, kids clubs, kids weeks, RC sailing are all very aligned with the RYA. We were seen in a very positive light and it was good to talk to the RYA teams about our active sailing membership.

Once again, a special mention to Martin and Cheryl who have continued with the role to look after the club boats. Wow, they certainly have made a difference, having all the club boats available, looking clean and healthy, all lined up smartly, makes the side of the clubhouse look fabulous, just what an organised sailing club should look like. A brilliant job, thank you.

The Pennine RC group has again steadily grown throughout the year, always good to welcome new members. A very civil activity of racing, tea and cake followed by more racing. Impressive to see so many races and to hear the banter. We can expect this to keep growing and we will build up quite a fleet.

Dinghy Park and Membership (Alan Waterworth)

No messing around here, we now know, who owns what and where to park it. All labelled up, and everyone issued with breeze blocks for the launching trollies.

Well done for sorting out new anchor points in the dinghy park, another team effort and it has not been easy getting them all into the ground.

Alan has also done sterling work in keeping track of the membership database and supporting the website development. He continues to own the record for the most items and longest update on the weekly meeting! Thanks Alan, good fun and great work.

Kids Week / Kids club / Kids sailing (Nicholas Perry, Emily Tredoux, Ray Tredoux, Josie, Nick Oldrini, Alan)

Another well organised Kids week/ Kids club / kids sailing year. I keep looking at all the great activities, the food, the organisation and time people put into this area. Personally, I am so pleased that we have such an active team that make all this happen. Well done guys, I know you all also have a great time.

Bosun (Nick Oldrini)

Another part of the club that takes a lot of time and focus to make sure we all have access to safe, reliable facilities. It is easy to forget and take for granted, that we can open the container doors, jump on the tractor, find the fuel, start a rib, have a few hours driving around, hopefully not too much actual rescue but always being prepared.

A very big thank you to Nick Oldrini, who does all work to make sure everything is ready for us all to use. We also love your WhatsApp pictures of rib tying down examples (mainly bad ones), boots, dinghy hardware, cast away bouys, pontoons and spectacular sunsets.

This work takes a lot more time than we might all think, so all we have to do is, put it away from where you found it and not damage it !

Training Centre (Joe Ready and Dominic Barnes, supported by all our qualified trainers)

A more “normal” year this time, lots of training of members through the courses and we have waiting lists for next year.

Thank you to Joe, who is standing down from the committee this time. Well done for seeing us through the RYA training centre assessments again and for keep us up to speed with what is involved with running a successful centre.

Thank you too to Dominic, who makes sure the courses are run safely and effectively.

Welcome to Alan Waterworth who is taking over from Joe as the Training Centre Principal.

House Committee (Rear Commodore – Ed Corteen, Josie, Steve Spencer, John Coulton, Christine)

The more I get involved with the club the more I realise that this fabulous group of people keep the club ticking along. Thank you all, very impressed with the time and effort you all put in to make sure we have superb facilities that are clean, tidy, warm, that we are fed and watered. All this doesn’t just appear from nowhere. This team prepare in advance with numerous Tesco orders and then setting up to serve everyone. Catering for kids week and 150 student event is a tall order.

We want to take the weight off some of the team, particularly with the larger events we hold and we are looking to have some support with the catering for these. So, we’ll continue to work out a plan on how this will work over the winter in preparation for next season.

During the year we have installed window panes, new external doors, painted the inside of the clubhouse, tidied up after the break in, dug trenches for cabling to allow electrics to the containers, kept the grounds neat and tidy, replaced the anchor points for the pontoon, bought new picnic tables and the list goes on. Thank you to all members who have helped out with working parties and providing the knowledge and expertise to carry out the work.

We have a list of projects and ear marked club funds to improve club facilities further and in the near future we aim to

All these projects will be funded from existing club funds and exploring grants.

Treasurer (John Hollis, or ”John the money” as he is known)

Many thanks to John, it is great to know that we are in good hands and that we have an excellent helm on the club finances. As you have seen from the list of projects we are looking at, John may be in for a tough ride next year opening the club purse !

Secretary (Ray Evans)

Whatever you want to know about the club Ray has it to hand. As we move into negotiations with Yorkshire Water to renew the lease it will be good to have both Ray and John as part of the team.

All the club meetings are documented and each week Ray makes sure we haven’t forgotten anything. Thank you Ray.

Club Welfare (Emily Tredoux)

A key role within the club to make sure we have right policies and procedures in place to demonstrate that we have suitable safeguarding for all our members. Thank you Emily for your support and guidance. Helping to keep the club a safe place for all members.

Just a couple of more areas !

Team Universities.

Great to meet you all, I know you share the tough ride with the Covid restrictions, thank you for keeping us in touch with your activities and supporting our risk assessments. It has been great to have improved communication via the Webchats. Keep up the good work in using Pennine SC as a base for the university sailing and advertising us across the country. It makes me smile when I meet people on Flotilla holidays or from the RYA who were students who sailed from Pennine. All have great memories.

Yorkshire Water.

As our landlord, and following a slight delay in activity due to Covid, we will be hopefully signing a new lease in the near future. We have an excellent working relationship with Chris Waters who is the operational manager for Winscar, he passes on how impressed he is with the work we have put into the club grounds. We are in regular contact with Dave Shepherd from the legal team who have helped us during the lockdown, but also with many other things this year.

Some feedback from Yorkshire Water from a recent meeting at the club, “I am really impressed, this is obviously a club that is well managed and has a good membership base. I am particularly impressed with the amount of different activities you run”.

On the down side, we were reminded that the lease does not allow any boat to be moored on the water over night, so we have removed the committee boat from its mooring to be compliant.

Overall

I was not aware of everything that happened at Pennine Sailing Club before I became more involved in the committee, but I’ve discovered so many people happily make a difference to our club community. It has turned out to be good fun and I hope we have demonstrated that fun on the zoom calls and WhatsApp groups, rather than meetings being a chore.

There are still more club activities I would like us to explore. The club house is a fantastic asset which is unused during the day time for most days, I believe we can offer more into the community. We have started conversations to set up a “Pennine Boat shed” based on the man shed charities ideas, where people can come and meet up during the day, maybe get involved in the club, maybe some sailing, rc sailing, rib qualifications etc. Lets see how this progresses and even better if it is something you would like to be involved with, please give me a call.

I hope you agree that the Pennine Club WhatsApp group has enabled direct updates to the ever-changing restrictions and club activities. We have 92 people on that group, it would be good to have all members on there, so please contact me and we can add you or use the QR code.

On a personal point, thank you to everyone who has sent me messages of support and those members that picked me up, pointed me in the right direction, when I got myself in a pickle.

If there is anyone, I have missed out then please accept my apology, you will certainly have played a huge part in the club. Make sure you tell me, as I’d not like to repeat the mistake next time. Thank you.

Auditors Report

We have examined the Income and Expenditure Account for Pennine Sailing Club which is in agreement with the book of accounts, and have obtained all the information and explanations which we consider necessary for the Audit.

In our opinion, these Accounts show a true and fair view of the club's Income and Expenditure for the year ending 31 October 2021 in stating an excess of income over expenditure of £19 800
