**NIGERIAN COMMUNITY LEEDS: 2022 ANNUAL REPORT**
## **Reference and administrative information**
Nigerian Community Leeds (NCL) is registered both as a Charity and a Private Limited Company with the Charity registration number of 1129681 and Private Limited Company number of 6781277.

The NCL Board of Trustees is made up of 5 elected officials and 5 co-opted trustees; together they make decisions on behalf of the organisation. The names of the current elected trustees and co-opted trustees are as follows:

The above Constituted Board of Trustees (CBoT) were appointed on the 7th November 2021 for a two-years term.
## **Structure, Governance and Management**
NCL's governing document remains its Article of Incorporation and Memorandum of Association.
General meetings (GM) are held quarterly where members ask questions relating to the Charity and Trustees give updates on their stewardship during the quarter(s) concerned. A finance report is also presented by the Director of Finance on behalf of the Chairman accounting for all financial matters in line with the budget.
The CBoT meets regularly to discuss the affairs of the charity in relation to its aims and objectives.
## **Objectives and Activities**
The key objectives of NCL are;
- The advancement of Education;
- The promotion of racial harmony;
- The advancement of Enterprise;

Some of the main activities undertaken in relation to our key objectives include:
## **EXCEL@NCL**
Excel@NCL is a supplementary school founded in May 2007 and it’s an integral part of the Nigerian Community Leeds (NCL) programmes. Excel@NCL enrols children between the ages 5 – 16 years. NCL is diligently providing valuable cultural education and academic support to our children. Every Saturday during term time, we continue to benefit from the great sacrifice made by our volunteers who work hard to deliver on this core objective of NCL. The Supplementary School is designed to provide pupils with a better understanding of their Nigerian Heritage by focusing on our diverse cultural values, traditions and moral teachings using storytelling, dance drama, food and music to help pupils understand the rich cultural heritage of the various tribes in Nigeria.
We offer a wide range of teaching such as numeracy and literacy, Nigerian Civics, Nigerian drumming & dancing, drama and Nigerian art workshops.
Our mission is to positively celebrate our rich Nigerian heritage. Pupils are now more aware of their roles and responsibilities to the community and their environment.
Excel@NCL won the National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education (NRSCE) Silver Charter Mark Award. We have now added a key academic element of the teaching of Mathematics and English by qualified subject specialists.
The programme session runs every Saturday, 12:00 – 14:00 during the school term at Richmond Hill Community Centre, Long Close Lane, Leeds, LS9 8NP. It has been a challenge to get back to where we were pre-pandemic due to a shortage of volunteers. However, we are gradually making meaningful progress to unleash the potential of this programme. A couple of excursions took place as part of this programme; a visit to London Museums and an outdoor picnic.
We have up-to-date policies for Excel@NCL for Child Protection, Terms of reference (TOR), Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, Off Site procedures, Role Descriptions, Safety Advice for Volunteers, Volunteer Policy, Behaviour Management Policy and more. Leeds City Council has continued to support NCL in all of its activities.
## **SPORTS@NCL**
We delivered our usual annual Leeds African Cup of Nations (LACoN) football tournament. The LACoN event is delivered in two ways, the Junior tournament and the Senior tournament. The Junior tournament is organised among primary schools in a certain postcode in Leeds. Pupils travel to neighbouring schools to participate; the venue is rotated among the participant schools. The senior tournament is designed for adults (18 years and above) and accommodates people from various communities around Leeds and surroundings. This event is a flagship NCL project that has made a

positive impact on the promotion of racial harmony and community cohesion across the city of Leeds and environs.
## **WELFARE@NCL**
Our annual programme of events are designed to improve the health and wellbeing of our members and beyond, and to help relieve the impact of the rising cost of living. Ethnic food banks were arranged with our partnership and independent business donors. This meant we were able to support our community members who are elderly, frail and those who were experiencing difficulties in the face of the rising cost of living.
## **ADMIN@NCL**
NCL has an online presence through its website. This gives potential members and donors access to read about the charity and its various activities. The website is kept up to date with information about the charity and the activities we are delivering. It is also used as a signpost to our partners and third parties.
We also communicate with our members via text messages, emails and WhatsApp to enable the dissemination of critical information in real time to the members concerning the activities of the organisation.
## **OTHER PROJECTS@NCL**
NCL organised a number of projects to target the needs of our members. These include: International Women’s Day (IWD), Leeds West Indian Carnival (LWIC), NCL Fundraising Gala and Award Night (NGFAN), the Family Day Trip (FDT) and Nigeria Independence Day (NID).
IWD was used as a platform to promote awareness on gender equality. The aim was to encourage members to accelerate their effort in promoting gender equality in their respective domains. Women were also encouraged to empower themselves to challenge domestic abuse and mental health issues resulting from abuse.
We took part in the LWIC to promote Nigeria cultural heritage, community cohesion and inclusiveness.
After the COVID-19 interruption we delivered the NGFAN 2022 which took place in Marriot Hotel Leeds city centre. The event is geared towards raising funds for Nigeria House Leeds as well as recognising notable individuals and enterprises in our community.

FDT is an annual event organised for members to travel to the seaside and spend a day together. The trip is part of NCL’s responsibility for the welfare of members as we would normally subsidise the cost of the trip for those not able to pay for their tickets.
The 62[st] Nigerian Independence Day celebration took place in person on the 1[st] of October 2022. This was an event organised to mark the anniversary of Nigeria's independence from British rule.
NCL is continuing to partner and network with local businesses in the community, Leeds City Council and other stakeholders. We help to promote local businesses via our social networking.
## **Financial Review**
Our efforts at prospecting for and obtaining grants for carrying out the activities stated in our objectives will continue in the coming year taking into account the difficult economic situation facing us all which has been compounded by the rising cost of living and more.
We report an in-year surplus of £9,554 compared to a surplus of £5,445 in the previous year.
Total funds carried forward this year of £54,360 compares to £44,806 for the previous financial year.
The Unrestricted Fund was in deficit by -£3,050 while the Designated and Restricted Funds were in surplus by £41,365 and £15,775 respectively at the year end. NCL did not hold any funds as custodian trustees on behalf of any other body.
## **Conclusion**
On behalf of the 2022 Board of Trustees (BOT), I have the pleasure of presenting this Report. Collaboration remains at the heart of what we do, and I am happy to report that our partners have and continue to express their willingness to work with NCL due to our commendable mission and objectives which we have delivered on, as evidenced by the events, activities and programmes in this report.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended **31 / 12 / 2022.**
**Responsibilities and** As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the **basis of report** accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
