Croydon Methodist Circuit Trustees Annual Report lorth• year ended 31 August 2025 Review of pro8res5 and achlÈvements Throughout the financial year the Croydon Methodist Circuit had Seven stèff members.. five ministerial Staff.. Revd Karen George Ipart-timel. Revd Richard Low50n, Revd Gyula Flak, Revd juliet Ushewokunze Ipart-timel and Deacon Al Henry together with Mrs Juliet Smith (Circuit Administrator) who trained and handèd over to Miss Julie Turner. All our churche5 remain Committed to maintaining their involvement In community outreach activities. Addington Methodist Church engages with three local schools.. The church hosted activities at Christmas. suth as Christin8le seryices for a number of classes and at Easter sessions on the Easter experSence. Beavers, Cubs Scouts, Rainbow5, Brownies and Guides meet weekly at the church hall. The young people attends four Parade services durin8 the year. Durin8 the year "sleep-ovels" were held on the church premises, the young people also run a coffee mornin8 on behalf of the church. The church has a monthly Messy Church for children and their families that Is well attended by school and communlty. The church holds a monthly comwnunity coffee mornlng during which donations are collected for the Vlne Food Bank in New Addington.. these events are supported by the local Church and communriy. Chrlst Church Methodlst Addiscombe hosts a Stay and Play toddler$ group which serves the community meets weekly, becoming a very popular group with an average of 25-28 weekly. At Christmas, they held a Carol Service at with they invited two local nurseries to loin them. The annual Christma5 Party took place. Rainbows. Brownies and Guides meet weekly at the church, they attend Church parade 3-4 tlmes a year. During the year, a new form of worship called "Breakfast Church- was been started In an effort to reach young families and those on the fringe of the church and cofflmunity, they have been verv Successful. Café worship continues to meet monthly which is an alternative, informal Service. During the year a number of social artivities were held for children and young families of the church and community, such as a quiz night. There are many regular activities at Downsview Methodist Church, in addition to worship by our congregation and two other congregations who re8ularly use the building. The Luncheon Club for senior citizens meet weekly and also have outings such as going out for lunth. There are usually 20- 25 attendees. The organisers also provide support to members such as visiting them in hospital or sending cards when they are unable to attènd. The Downsview Players. an amateur dramatic group based at the church, put on reBular shows. They include perfom)ances particularly for people with additional needs, a150 takin@ the show to Hall Gran8e.

The Girls, and Boys. Bri83des meet weekly as doe5 the Brigade5 Band and the Community Choir. The brigades also run an annual camp for younB people. In partnership with the Waddington Way Residents Association, the church annual take party in the Big Lunch - this wèlcomÈd local resldents and members of our community groups and the wider community. Thi5 had around IO0+ attendees including local councilors. The church continues its outreach programme of periodically providing drinks and refreshments to the children and parent5 from Downsview School who park in the church's car park to collect their chlldren I'mission In the Car Park'l. This year. we started an after-school Craft session for prlmary age children on the 2nd Tuesday of most months which has become very popular (around 25 children plus their carers attend). These a1vIlle$ create a bridge beiween the church and the local School. We have hosted several visits for the ltxal primary sthool (Downsview Primary) which supports thelr currlculum, both for RE and PSHE, makin8 link5 Wlth the wider community. Each year, the School choir performs at the Luncheon Club Chri5tma5 Lunch. The church offers a weekly friendly 8atherin8 on Monday afternoons. It started out as Warm Place, durin8 the winter Season, but due to demand from users, it now runs throughout the year. It is mainly attended by older people including those with dementia. We have started a new group for people in their 20s and 30s as an informal place of support to meet and eat. as people in this demographic can experience loneliness and Isolation. In addition to the above, our halls and rooms are regularly let out to the blood donoation team, keep fil. residents meetin85 and other community activities Includlng children's partles. Norbury Methodist Church holds a weekly Pop-in communlty café which is well attended and valued by local people. The church also runs a weekly craft group and Posh Tots, a weekly group for toddlers and their carers. VarKJu5 community events take place on the premi5e5, including monthly 5ur8erie5 for the local ward councillor5. A150 a weekly knitting 8roup for Seniors meets. The premi5e5 of Parchmore Methodist Church and Community Centre are being used bv five community groups, includin8 performing art for children and young people. The trustees agreed the opening of a lunch club in thè Pop-rn and it is now bÈin8 run on a small scale by volunteers. The Church also holds a regular Coffee Morning and provides a valuable opportunity for members and their family and friends to meet over refreshments to chat ènd to play games.

A group of between 14-16 peoons from both church and community Bathers each month to bake bread. each month somethin8 new is being baked. A new proofing oven has been acquired. The monthly film club continues with a large number from Church and community. Church members have close link with Hall Grange the residential care home run by MHA IMethodi5t Home for the Aged) in Shirley. giving support as volunteers and supportin8 artivitie5 in the home and in the Wilderness, a heritage Barden on the Hall Gran8e premlses. The ¢hur¢h Conducts week Worship services at Hall Gran8e. The church continues to support the work of 5hrublands Food Bank and Shirley Nei8hbourhood Care. Dudn8 Christmas and Lent studies and activities were held. A Christmas tree festival was held at Christmas engagin8 Wlth the church groups and commtsnity groups. During ihe year a number of activities including jumble sale. book sale and qulz nl8ht were held for the church and community. South Norwood Methodist Church holds a Coffee mornin8 hvice a month for the communlty to come together. We also held a number of events for our 150th Anniversay including an dmusic concert and family fun day. The mlnister and several church members lead a monthly service at Acacla Care Cenlre, a local residential care home. Other organisations hire the premises for drama classes etc. West Croydon Methodist Church has a Wednesday Club offering support to indivlduals and families who are homeless or stru88linB in other way5. It operates weekly except the last week of each month. offerin8 food, toiletries and clothing. Out Youth Group meet on Friday evenings drawin8 In the community. They or8anise a ran8e of events talent niBht, careers day and jtsmble sale. A community BBQ in the summer. The premises is used bv other churches and re8ular sur8eries with local councillors from Croydon council. The above shows that many of our ¢hur¢hes run various activities for children and young people. Churches host and engage with a range of uniformed or8anisations. West Croydon Methodist Church has a partiCLtlar ministry with children and young people; it has an active youth club to support young people in their Christian faith with many bein8 confimied and received as church members. The circuit provides ministers and preachers to lead a weekly Sunday afternoon worship service at Hall Grange, a residential care home run by MHA. Several church members do voluntary work at Hall Grange.

Training has been offered to local Church and circuit tnJstee5 to equip them for their roles. Prescribed office holder5 in local churches and the circuit have en8a8ed with the mandatory Unconsciou5 Bias and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion a5 part of the Methodi51 Church in Britain's Juslice, Di8nity & Solidarity Strategy. The clrcult trustees also adopted a roft of policies relating to circuit lay employees. The circuit's work is guided by the Methodist Church in Britain's statement "Our callin.. The Church exists to increase awareness of God's presence and to celebrate God'5 love The Church exists to help people to grow and learn as Christians, through mutual support and care The Chur¢h exists to be a good nei8hbour to people in need and to challenge injustice The Chur¢h exists to make rnore followers of Jesus Christ The cSrcult provides initial training for Local Preachers and Worship Leader5 as well as on80in8 peer support for those accredited. Creating Safei Space safeguardin8 trainin8 is offered annually to those needing initial or refresher traininB. The Circuit staff ¢ontinve to work in partnership with local and national voluntary and statutory bodies. They engaBe ecurnenically with Croydon Churches Forum as well as other local groups.

Revd Richard Grocott, comes to us from a nei8hbouring circuit and has 20 year5 Èxperience of this role. He will have Pastoral responsibility for the churches at West Croydon and Parchmore. In addition he will offer strategic leadership to the wider circuit and will chair meeting5 of the circuit trustees and their executive. the Circuit Leadership team. He will a150 provide line management to the cirtuit adminlstrator. Risk Assessment The Circuit Leadership Team ICLTI continues to review the regulatory framework in which the circult operates and where the CLT finds areas of risk to the circuit, appropriate action is taken to minimlse the risk. 5afe¥uardlng Every person has a value and dignity which come5 directly from the creation of male and female in God's ima8e and likeness. Christians see this potential as fulfilled by God's recreation of us In Chrlst. Amon8 Other things this implies a duty to value all people bearin8 the image of God and therefore to protect them from harm. The Croydon Methodist Circuit commits itself to ensuring the implementation of Methodist Connexional Safe8uardinB policy: government legislation, 8uidance and safe practlce in the circuit and in the churches in support of thls. Local church and circuit safeguardinB officers have ensured that those new to the relevant offices withln local churches and the circuit have obtained a DBS disclosure and attended the Foundation Module training offered locally or in the wider district and. where appropriate, the Advanced Module trainlnB offered by the London Dlstrlct. Revd Cameron Kirkwood. Doreen Rldden and losef Hopeson- Sawah are q¢Jalified to offer Foundation training Wlthin local churches or across the circuit. Local church safeguarding officers have also been making sure that those who hire our premises are compllant with safeguarding pollcy and practl¢e. The Croydon Methodist Clrcuit commlts itself to the provislon of support. advice and trainlng for lav and ordained people that will ensure people are clear and confident about their roles and responsibillties In safeBuardin8 and promoting the welfare of children and adults who may be vulnerable.

The Statement of Financial Activities for the year ended 31 August 2025 Ipa8e 121 shows a surplus of almost £74,000. arising principally from an enforced delay in refurbishing one of the circuit manses resulting in additional rental income of £16.¢XJO and a related reduction In maintenance costs of £14,000. receipt of prior year circuit assessment arrears of £18.000. £6.000 higher interest receSpts than bud8eted, and lower than expected staffing costs: specifically, actual costs for part.time ministerial support and related costs to cover the period following the move of the clrcuit's previous superintendent minister to a new appointment in August 2024 and the appointment of a new superintendent minister in Summer 2025 were £16,000 lower than expected. As a consequence of the above costs defèr131s and savings and addilional income in the year ended 31 ALtgust 2025 the circurt's financlal resources increased by £73,30512024.. £32,493) and the circuit'5 net current assets Increased from £204,687 at the beginnirbg of the year to f 277,992 at year end, of which £174,22512023'. £101.9291 represents general reserves. Lookingforward the necessary manse refurbishment works will now be carried out in the new financlal yèar. The circuit continuesto anticipate that churcheswill be able to meet future assessment payments in full, and therefore expects its financial performance to be stable over the 2025.28 period. Taklng into #¢count the actions taken in recent years to maintain tight control over the circuit's fixed expenditure and therefore church assessment levels, the Trustees have every ieason to believe that the circuit is a 8Ollb8 concern. Reserves Poll<y The reserves of the circuit are dependent on the extent that its ongoing Costs can be funded from the assessments levied on the individual churches. The circuit sèeks to operate it5 flnancial affalrs eJ¢h year on an ongoin8 basis. At the year end. the actual readily available reserves. being the circult's General and Model Trust funds, represented 11.48 months12024'. 8.731 expenditure, which Ss In excess of the stated policy of general reserves of at least six months expenditure. Looking forward, the circuit 15 confident that for the fofeseeable future total reserves will remain at an adequate level.

Detailed governance arrangements are outlined within the Constitutional Practice and Discipline of the Methodist Church by order of the annual conferencè ICPDI. The Connexional Office implements decisions made by Conference and is a150 responsible for the Statloning of Presbyters In individual Circuits. Connexional decisiorbS are passed to the Chalr of the District and appropriate Officers of the Dlstrlct for regional implementation. The district passes control down to circuit level for local implementaiion by the Superintendent Mlnister, ministerial staff and Circuit Stewards via the medium of the Circuit Meetin8. The membership of the Circuit Meeting is laid down in the Constitutional Practlce and Discipline of the Methodist Church. To8ether the members of the Circuit Meetin8 are the Mana8in8 Trustees of the Circuil. Trustees As set out In Methodist Standing Order 510. the members of the Croydon Methodist Circult meetin8 are the Charlty Trustees, membership beln8 made up of ministers and circuit office holders, who are automatically trustees, together wtih representative5 appointed by the local churches. Owing to the number of individual churches in the circuit and the fart that the majority of the Circuit Meeting members are those elected by individual churches, it 15 clearthat the make-up of the meeting Is subject to frequent change.
