ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2020 THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF ST JOHN’S CHURCH, STANSTED MOUNTFITCHET

Aims, purposes and objectives of the PCC

St John’s Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The PCC is also responsible for the maintenance of the church building and grounds and the church hall.

St John’s is part of a United Benefice with the parishes of Birchanger and Farnham. Stansted parish is part of the Dunmow and Stansted Deanery. The Schools and Communities Missioner post is currently vacant, and the future of Connect 120 is under consideration.

In the past, St John’s has had strong links with St Mary’s Church of England School, Magna Carta School and Bentfield County Primary School. However, during the exceptional year of 2020 visits to these schools could not take place.

The following activities/services usually enjoyed by many people did not take place after March 2020 because of Government restrictions relating to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Report on activities during 2020

Our services and activities were operating as usual until 15[th] March when, because of the Covid 19 pandemic they came to a halt during the first national Lockdown. The last service in church was held on 15[th] March after which services were streamed through the Zoom platform. Our first Zoom service was on 22[nd] March. We continued with Zoom services from the Rectory until 16[th] August, when the Rector began to broadcast from church. We returned to services in church from 6[th] September (continuing to Zoom for those who did not wish to attend in person). The choir “socially distanced” were permitted to sing. The last service before Lockdown No. 2 was on 1[st] November. Services on Zoom took place throughout November, with Rector Paul Wilkin’s last Sunday on 29[th] November. Services took place in church for the remainder of December - socially distanced, face masks being worn and no singing. Lockdown was lifted on 2[nd] December, and therefore we were able to have our Christmas Midnight Service in St John’s.

During some of the time of lockdown the church was open for private prayer.

On 1[st] March 2020, two weeks before the first lockdown, a new sound system was dedicated to the memory of Barry West, a former member of our congregation.

The PCC met three times in 2020 – on 20[th] January (in the church hall), 13th July (by Zoom), 28[th] September 2020 (by Zoom). Ann additional “meeting” was held by email on 30[th] December to formally accept a resolution concerning a legacy.

Finances

Our Treasurer Philip Everett stood down at APCM 2019 and the roles he undertook were distributed between other PCC members. We are grateful to him for agreeing to produce the 2020 accounts. Our main fund-raising event, the Christmas Market, did not take place. Money from the proceeds of the sale of former’s curate’s house in Gilbey Crescent was invested at the beginning of the year, and a sizeable legacy was received towards the end of 2020.

Incumbent

After Paul’s retirement at the end of November, the Archdeacon invited us to interview Rev’d Dr Colin Fairweather. He has now been appointed and will be inducted on 13[th] April 2021 as Priest-inCharge of our Benefice, with the addition of the Parish of Takeley and Little Canfield.
