The Parochial Church Council I'PCC, or 'Coun(Il'l is a body corporate and a registered charity11129435),

membership, offittrs, standing committee and conduct of meetintrs are also govemed by ecclesiastical law.
This Teport concerns the PCC and tlie acti￿ltIeS ofr the parish 8enerally for The Ecclesiastical Parish of St
Marylvbone wlth Holy Trinity, St Marylebone ('St Marylebone. or 'the parish'l in the Deanery of St
Marylebone, the ArclTrdeacoThry of Charing CTOSS in the Churth of England Diocese of London. Since earl},
2016, the Archdeaconry has been temied "The ArchdeacoTLry of the Two Cities" and is served by the
Archdeacon of London and the Archdeacon of Charing Cross. The area of tlie pari.4h is approximately half
a mile acioss by QDe and a half miles North to South in London districts Wl and NWI. It extend5 from Baker
street and Park Road in the Ivest to lapproximately) Great Portland sti.eel and The Broad Walk (Regenys
Park) in the East, and from Prince Albert Road in the North to (approximately) George Stieet and Queen

MEMBERSHIP AND ORGANISATION
Membership
Members of the PCC {"the Council") are elected by the Annua] Parochial Church Meeting {'APCM') or co-
opted by the Council, in aecoTdance with the Church Representation Rules. It has been the practice of the

There are currentl) 610 individuals on tlie Electoral Roll compaied with 590 im 2024 Annual Report. Of these,

The calendar year 2024 saw. a strong and eTrthiisiastic team of side5men amd welcomers opeiatino
throughout the year. The sidesmeTh and weliomers haN'e continued with the additional responsibility OE
processing the iegistration ofyoung Chuich mcmbers each Sunday and those membeIs vf the team wlio are
parents of those who attend Young Church have been extremely helpful in this regard.
Of the 25 people named in thc last report as regular 5idesmen, INO, namely Rachel Tustin and Yang Sie
have resigned, and they aie both thanked foi their time of service.

more than one duty and ovei the period covering the Ch12Stmas services, a number of people covered

MUSIC AND SPECIAL SERVICES
Musical highlights
2024 was FUU OE musical high points and developments, perhaps rnosf importantly induding the complete
OITerhaLiI of the RieLTer organ duTino the summer ￿.hiCh has restored the instrument to its glorious
eapaaty; a Festival of IX Lessons and Cayols that saw a record /50 attenders,. and a performance of Handel's
Messiah tn assoaation WateryeTry Opera Festival. Mole on all these events below.
Personnel
2024 a]so saw important changes to the music department.. Ivilliam Fairbairn left Èn September to take up the
position of AsS15tant Director of MLtsic at Cjifton College. and Edwaid Carewll conduded his tenure with us
as Ortran Seholat, moving on to the same position at Liverpool Anglican CathedEal. Though we iwere sony
lo bid farewell to bi)th of them. our team has bcen ably reconstituted with the appoinknnents of Luke hLitchell
as Assistant Director of Music (corning fiorn the Queen's College, Oxford) and Maya Shepherd as Organ
Scholar IMa}'a eoTnes to lis fvuTn Haileybury and Vwill niove on to Cardiff Unii'ersity in 2025 to study
medicine). Both new arrivals have already made iTery p05itii"e contsibutions to the life of the parish in theii

Junior Choir

PeEhaps the most signiEicant musical project OE 2024 was the restoration of the Rieger organ. AfteT the
buildings works of the last few years, added to nearl}. 40 years of dailv use in church ServI￿S and by the
Ro}'al Academy of Music. the or8an was in need of a complete overhaul. The scope of the Wor￿ was large,

St Marylebone Festival
tn 2024, we undertook hfv'o major new projects as part of the St Mary'lebone Festival. tn March the choir
perfonned Bach's St John Passion in honour of the 300th anniversary ot the WOTk, and in Deceinber we
perfoLThed HanLlel'b Mvb4jiih in collabuiatiun with Waterperr5' Opera Febtivaj. Both Loncerts tncluded full
orchestra and solossti and attracted large and enthusiastic audiences. We ivill build on diese succe55e5 with
similar CO2)￿rtS in 2025. Otrher Festival events included a summer jazz concert LTriven by The Easy Rollers, a
swing band, and we continued oui. seiies of lunchtirne concerts in partnership with the Royal Academy. Cyur
organ recitals weie btiefly inteiiupted by the Liigan works, bill nonetheless continued to attract ijery ejninent
pertorniers, including Jamie Mcvinnie and Richard Pinel. Thanks to S￿art Harrison Eor hi5 work
coordinating the lunehtime roneerts, and to Willi&n Fairbaim and Luke Mitchell for the oriyan tecitals.

In addition to OLir usual seqiience of servi￿5 for Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas the cholr sang for a
large number OE weddings, memorials, and other special servAces this year, including participation in the
London Festival of Contemporary Church Miisic. A particular highlight was the IX Lessons and Carols
service in DeLeinber which drew 750 peoplel

MISSION AND LOCAL OUTREACH

The St Marylebone CE School
The chaplain has continued to ￿ve pastora] support to students and staff, to lead and support high-
quality ivorship, and to gupporl the Head and knior LeadersIiip Team ISLT} takin4Y the lead on
sttategy and planning related to Collective Worsliip and the Sthool's Church of England Ethos and
PCC of St Marylebone AEfftual ReFort 2024

Character. The thaplain has delivered training and reSoUr￿S both to the SLT and the staff team
more broadIy on recosrllsing and communicating the school's Cluistian ethos" on leading collective
worship; and on preparation &oT SIAMS inspection. He is working closely with the Head of REP to
prepaTe the school for an expected SIAMS inspection next academic year.
Collective Worship continues to be offered to extremely
high standard, in assemblies and through the Thought for
the Day broadcast to tutor groups at the start of each day.
Singing in church- whith had become moribund following
the pandemic- is now back to full strength, with confident
partiapation across the year groups. A wide range of
mwical accompantment ￿}d styles has helped, aloii8 Wlth
the Director of Music's entertainins and invigorating hyn

A small staff prayer meeting continues, and a new Bible Study, CTOSS Examined, is being nm by two
members of the teadiing staff under the Chaplain's supervision and advice. ￿le next steps will
inclLide expanding the resources available foT Thought Eor the Day and dovetailing Collective
Worship more intentionally with the PSHE curri￿lIum.
Chapel Team has continued to thrive, with members fvom all lower sthool years. The￿ are 20
student mernbers, with aroimd 8 at any one time participating in activities and all taking their tum
serving, assistin8 with assemblies, readin8 and pra}Tin8. They are passionate, fun. and committed
both to explorins and deepening their faith and to leaming how to serve at the altar. The cohort
includes several sMdents with particularly marked speaal educational needs and behavioiiral
thallenges in Chapel Team. The diaplain has worked closely with the SEN and pastoral teams to
ensure that Chapel Team is an experience that glows CODlidence whilst proiryding a properly
containing and nurtLiTing envirorunent. The chaplain is ably assisted by tluee student sacristans in
Year 9 who are exceptional youns leaders.
The chapel thoir now has a record number and is singing with great confidence and a much-
expanded repertoire, part of the first-class experience that any private School would be proud of. At
the Festival of N'llie Lessons and Carols, the musical offering was of an exceptional standaTd, eclectic
in styles and involving a hu8e number of students. Hildegard of BIn￿ry Handel, Mozart, Chopin,
Jazz, Fleetwood Mac, and students, own compositions have been part of OLU worship this year.

pandemic and lockdowii.. higher anxiety, less experience of soaalisin& and disrupted leaming are
all evident in diEfereiit ways for different age groups, and uicreasinglv so as we welcome new
student5 for ivhom the pandemic affected early }'ear5 of primary education. The deaths of two
piipils- one in year 9 and the other in year 11- oveT the p￿t year has broiisht additional pastoral
needs. The chaplain has been intimatel}i ini'oli'ed in supporting students. staff, ￿ld the families of
the pupils concerned. Memorial 5en,"ices lor the girls have been critical tor conlall]ing and
expressing students, grief.
The St Marylebone CE Brid8e School
The Church of England's onlv SpeciaI School Lnanages a strong Christian ethos in the context of a
dii'erse student body with many Students of other faiths (particularly Muslim diildren). The sch001
continues to enjoy its new purpose-bLiilt horne in Queen's Park, with the landscaping of the OLltdDor
space now reaching a maturityi that creates a nUrt￿ing and containins environment.
The thaplaiIi ivorks with staff (indudins tlie i%'ide range of therapists) to provide accessible pastoral
care to sttidenls. He produces the dail}, act of ii'orship via power-point and bupporlb staff in the

Father Stephen Heam has continLied to support the Children's and Families Worker. The annual
First Mass of Chrisl]nas for ChildTen was a jo}T with numbers regaining their pre-pandemic stIetkgth

Children's & Families. Work
The thaplain has conbnued to act as line manager for the thildren's and Families, Mintstry Lead.
In Iul}", we were joined by Liam O'SullivarL as our new C&FML. His vision and energy have been
wonderful and is reini'igorating our families, ministry after a year withoiit a pennanent person yn
post. Nevertheless. the chaplain with extraordinaril! committed young chuich volunteers was able
to keep some provision going, ana a deep debt ot" sratitude is due to them. We had excellent
thildren's worship on Good Friday, with statiODS of the cr055, and at Christmas, where over 60
attwided the aiildren's First Mass of Christmas. All-age worship on Harvest and Motherins
Sundays weie both well received, with positive comments from both youns families and older
members of the congregation.
Junior Chozr has also increased in nEunbers and confiden￿, singing monthly at the Choral Eucharist,
and conttibuting to the Nativity Play. Great thanks is due to Dr Hannah French ft)r her ima8inative
and engasing leadership OE this group.
Music for the Moment
We have continued to develop and review this excellent programme of concerts for people livins
with dementia. their families. SilPPOTters, and carers. Father Stephen, supported by Mother Katv,
has met re￿ilarlY with other stakeholdeTS {Resonate Arts, The Wigll)OTe Hall. and the Roval
Academy of Music) to plan and reE￿e the running of the evaits, and year 9 students at SMS have

The Communitv and Developnient department undenvent staff changes in August of 2024, and a
new manager sfarted wlth the team.
In January Mie saw the Start 0£ our partnership with Forsters w'ho are now operating their Community
Kitchen ftorn the Church, aimed at supporting the homeless but open to anyone in need of a hot meal or
company. This takes Pla￿ eTrery Thursday Irom the church kitchen and Howard de Walden Roorn.
.Trl'e hosteiq an event with The Marvlebone Society to celebrate the launch of a new book, The Memorial
Garden. The book delves into the history of St Marylebone (past and piesent churches) and the local area. 25

Women's Day event in eaTI}' March for around 30 guests, all of whom had supported St Mar)'lebone in some

viewing event on the eveninty of March 14th. This occasion oEEered membeTS of our congregation a chance to

The Adopt a Ptpe appeal to support the restoration of the organ successfully raised £50,425 from individual

of the upconiing organ restoration project. The event frathred current and fonneI St Marvlebone organists

after a generous donation in 2023. The proiect coincides with a larger project for Paddington Street Gardens,
a public consultation took platr in May and we will be ivorking towards a start date early in 2025.
We re￿]VEd a number 0£ donations foT the St Nqarylebone HCC throughout 2024. The Aubrei, Orchard Ltsle
Trust donated £4.0(h). Capita donated £17,500 split into 2 pai'ments and £5,0(Kl from The London HQ
CornmiiThityT Fund la group of several Business ImprovementDL5tricts in Victoria, Ivhitehall and N'.orthbankl.
We ajso received £10,000 from The Harley Street BID and £12,000 froin the Hoivard de Ivalden Estate. These
donations allowed us to cover the eost of our bursary programme offering low-cost mental health support to
those who would not usuall}, be able to afford private fees. The donations also allowed us to increase the
frequency of the Makin8 Sense tsTOUP drop-in sessions from forthightl}' to weeklv.

St Marylebone partiapated in the festive Merry Marylebone event in November, hosting a stall featuring
handcTafted items, cards, ajid snacks made by our consre8ation and volunteers. The occasion served as an
Oppo￿nIty to both raise money for the churth and etTrsage with the local community.
The Mii"ocles ix Morylebojie cotnmuntty appeal ra￿ again in December. This was die third year of a successful
partnership between St Marylebone Parish Churth and The Harley StEeet BID with the aim of supporting
the wider Marylebone and Westminster Community. Mle raised £6,190 which was aistnbiited in the fonn of
vouthers for food or clothing to local indi￿dual5 and charities. Ille also asked member5 of the community
tn dcjnate toys and with the help Of the l.Dnd()n Bu.%ine.1s srhonl we. collected and delivcred over 150 items.
Through collaboration with other churche% and charitie.s, we were able to target those who were mn%t in
need in the area.

Volunteering and Community Support.. Our voliinteers continue to play a vital role at Si Marylebone,
particularly af the Ivelcome Desk, where tlie}' greet visitors and proK'ide infomiation about the Church. Two
volunteers have coiisistently staffed the desk on Tuesdays and Wednesdajys. with addithonal help on Fridays.
Volunteers also facilitated monthly Chiirch tours and largeT group tours for organizations such as the U3A
group, the London Appreciation GroLlP, and the National Churches Trust.
In 20?4. Olir corporate gardening volunteers frorn Wates Conslniction helped maintain the EastBank Garden,
while NTicholas Stephens Construction is committed io suppoitiLig garden iipkeep in 2025.
Our aTchive volunteers have rnade sioniftcanl strides in organizing and catalo8uino the collection. This work
has been inva]uable not only for the preservation of St Marylebone's herita8e but also for the professional

THE ST MARYLEBONE HCC Psythotherapy
2024 was a biisy and overall positive year in the life of St Marylebone HCC. We ended the year liavin& (or a
second year in a row, Lovered the cost ol salaries and a contribution to the Churth costs. We made a small
SLLrplus and liave a clear way of prodiicing oiir accounts.
We have had the usual comings amd goings in the team. After a full yeaT of undertaking psychological
assessments, Anoushka Beazley has moved on. Tracy Brown who had bewi witli the Centrei jILSt oves seven
years, left ai ChJistiDas. We liave v￿￿ed TTaCy'S contributioTr undertakintr client work and also initial
consultations. We hope she Lnay ieturn in the future. Michael Davey left Lis in ApriL as he is very involved
in the Laiirel CentTe. We have been delighted to welcome thiee new therapists, Keziah Cader and Lina

with improvements in individual membeis, circuDlStances. It has 3 key core number, but il would be good
to expand it and oui aim for 2025 is to publicise this more widely and attract new members. The group also
enjoyed a visit from its benefactors, Tonjp and Michelle Hillary, w,ho were most impressed with the gTOUP'S
achievements.
We have been delighted io receive donations towards Moking Sense and the Centre's bursary fund. as this
Me￿]$ we can continue to offer Iow-COSt therapy to people w.ho otherwise could not afford psycliological
help. Ive are rnost grate￿1 for recorded donations of just uTrdeT £38,WO received in 2024.
In the middle of the year, our Consultant Psychiatrist. Dr Mariane Hayward. ran a workshop on Eating
Disorders, which was very well attended and appreciated. Discussions are currently underway with
Professor Christopher Cook, for an event on'Hearing Voices.. Spiritual Phenomena tn the Consultin8 Room..
