TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT FOR YEAR

1 SEPTEMBER 2024 to 31 AUGUST 2025

CHARITY NAME: CHAPEL ALLERTON METHODIST CHURCH

Registered Charity Number 1129425

CHARITY’S PRINCIPAL ADDRESS : Town Street, Leeds LS7 4NB

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The purposes of the Methodist Church are and shall be deemed to have been since the date of Union, the advancement of –

1) The Christian faith in accordance with the doctrinal standards and the discipline of the Methodist Church;

2) Any charitable purpose for the time being of any Connexional, district, circuit, local or other organization of the Methodist Church;

3) Any charitable purpose for the time being of any society or institutional subsidiary or ancillary to the Methodist Church;

4) Any purpose for the time being of any charity being a charity subsidiary or ancillary to the Methodist Church.

The principal activities of Chapel Allerton Methodist Church are the provision of opportunities and facilities for regular Christian Worship and associated activities and provision of facilities for youth and other community activities.

To this end we:

1.Provide corporate worship and related activities for spiritual growth and the deepening of faith in God through Christ.

2.Express Christian love through mutual care and support and provide for fellowship for members and for others within the community.

3.Provide outreach of faith and witness within and beyond the local community.

4.Raise the awareness of the church family of concerns experienced by our fellow Christians and others, in other countries, in this city and the neighbourhood.

To facilitate this work, it is essential that we maintain the fabric of our two buildings, the Church and the Methodist Centre. This is financed in part through letting many of the rooms to local groups and organisations, whose activities run throughout the week and provide direct benefit to the local community – These include: Playgroups, Guides & Brownies, Youth Clubs, Lunch Club, Arts Club, indoor sports and fitness groups, Seniors Groups and ad hoc family parties and cultural events.

As sponsors and supporters of Thrive Leeds, a local ecumenical Youth Project, the Church is pleased to be able to host their two youth clubs in the Methodist Centre and to provide office space for Thrive Leeds’ staff.

The membership of the Church and those attending regular worship has been broadly stable with a few new attendees balancing out the deaths and transfers.

The Church continues to support ‘Churches together in Chapel Allerton and Meanwood’ and has strong ecumenical relationships with St Matthews Church as covenanting churches, worshipping frequently together and organizing annual shared events. Our links with Chapel A Baptist Church, who worship in our Methodist Centre building, grow ever stronger as evidenced by our joint project to carry out refurbishment work during the Summer of 2025.

Further refurbishment of the Methodist Centre is needed, some of it urgent, schedules of necessary works, costings and means of financing, are in process of being drawn up.

There is also a desire to adapt our Church building to provide a more open and welcoming aspect as well as creating more useable spaces. A feasibility study is being embarked upon in the new financial year, this study to include exploration of options to reduce the carbon footprint of this building.

The Church has continued to be generous in its support of other charities. In 2024-25 our Church Charity was Leeds Mind, for which £7,628 was raised through special events and activities. A further £1,760 was raised for various charities through special collections; and a grant of £4,000 was made to Thrive Leeds.

Reserves Policy

It is the policy of Chapel Allerton Methodist Church to hold reserves that exceed 25% of annual expenditure. Reserves currently comfortably exceed this figure, but are set to be reduced by the necessary refurbishment works and desired building alterations referred to above.
