## Chairman’s Report 21/03/2021

Our year at Harmony has been a good year, which has helped us to achieve our aims and improve our financial income in comparison to our previous year. Our previous year was quite a challenge financially and this year has proved that obtaining funding has become more achievable, even though feedback from funders indicates that funding has never been sought after so much and the amount of applications are overwhelming to funding organisations equating to funding organisations dedicating themselves to the very best of projects, or sharing a lesser amount usually to particular regions. This of course means that Harmony has proven itself by acquiring funding throughout the year from numerous organisations based on our excellent projects and giving value for money.

Our volunteering staff are professional and competent in many roles including Youth Counsellor, photographer, videographer, sports coach, music producer and artist, along with handling day to day tasks including administration, financial and project management.

We are very proud that we are at the heart of our community and have been since 2001, we are also proud to be part of a substantial support network including Bolton Council, Bolton CVS, Bolton Youth Offenders Team, Bolton Jobcentre and Bolton constabulary, Clarion Futures along with many local business’s.

Harmony has extended its outreach within the community and now delivers basic needs food parcels and clothing to those that are in need. We offer educational projects to numerous primary schools within Bolton with an excellent record, we are currently in operation of projects funded by Bolton Council, Clarion Housing, JD Foundation, each project serving the young people our area and the community at large.

In house we continue to welcome young people particularly those with issues ranging from anxiety to drug or alcohol miss use, we differ from the standard youth club centre where our visitors are invariably those who lack trust in the system, those who would not normally attend mainstream institutions and have a stained past or bad record in society. We at Harmony have a non judgmental attitude and provide a pathway for insight to personal issues by offering interests to suit a wide range of tastes, one of which are our three music recording studios, sport, dance and filmmaking Within our very busy weeks, we still manage to acquire volunteers and come up with exciting project ideas to approach funders with, since the time of writing the Government has lifted the social lockdown rule due to COVID-19 virus which has meant that all our funding requests have been restarted therefore we are slowly regaining normal service. The projects that where currently paused have been resumed, along with new and exciting projects both inhouse and in the community, we still have our centre which is fully manned and there to assist those in need in relation to guidance after the lockdown, assisting with benefits, food and lodging.

While many charities and community groups having to close their doors permanently, I am confident that Harmony can continue to provide excellence in its support of the community built on its years of experience with young people and its validity amongst the organisations, business’s and the people of Bolton.

We will continue to provide quality service, secure our reputation and remain a hub in serving our community.

Mr John Hynes (Chairman of Harmony youth project).

## **20 years of Harmony Youth Project**

Harmony Youth Project was established in 2001 and was the vision of one man, Mr Charlie Barrett. 20 years later it has a rich history of supporting young people of all ages to improve their quality of life and becoming a valuable member of our community and society. Harmony started at Hibbert St. community centre but it soon became apparent that the place was too small for the amount of young people wanting to attend Harmony, Charlie responded to the demand by renting the top floor of an old mill in Wordsworth Street Halliwell and opened it as a media centre where the young people could have a safe and secure place to go, this would become the home of Harmony Youth Project for the next twenty years. Harmony, a registered charity and state-of-the-art Youth Centre in the heart of Bolton for 8 to 19 year olds, is open 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year, offering an exciting range a of targeted and universal provisions including music production, film making, photography, sports, arts, mentoring and community outreach work, all our activities and opportunities are available to all young people across Bolton and Greater Manchester. Here’s to another twenty years!

## **Keep Harmony In Bolton**

In May 2021 it will be Harmony Youth Projects 20 year anniversary. We are very proud of the work and positive influences and changes we have made in Bolton. We have always worked with the most deprived and disadvantaged people while doing positive projects and initiatives, engaging with a wide range of diverse groups of people which represent the Bolton community. We have achieved many successes in our 20 year journey and we believe we have helped change the face of youth and community work not just in Bolton but in the North West. We have strived to build bridges and strong community links in some of the most deprived wards in the Bolton area.

Using music and other art mediums we have embraced the many multicultural differences and helped people to see the true positives of living in a diverse community. We like so many businesses, charities and organisations, have struggled financially over the duration of the pandemic. We now have genuine fears and concerns for our charities survival as since March 2020 we have lost all contracts with schools and other youth provisions as they have had to close. This represents our main source of income and we believe that our charity is a very special one, providing services like no other in this town. Therefore, we are asking anyone has been involved with Harmony to help us through this crisis enabling the charity to continue to serve the community of Bolton. If you are one of the many thousands of people who have been positively affected by the charity over the last 20 years please help in any way you can.

## **Harmony In The Community**

This is a new initiative to help vulnerable families who are suffering due to the current climate, working in close proximity with our partners and their generosity, we are able to supply these families with food hampers with enough food in them to last them a week and ensure they have something to eat. Over 250 families have benefited from this ongoing project through the Bolton area. Harmony in the community also acts as a hub which offers, help, support and advice by signposting to other agencies so that we can broaden the level of support and make clients more aware of the help that is available within Bolton. We also offer a one to one counselling service free of charge and strictly confidential for anyone who is in need of help.

## **After School Club**

Children are now able to come to our after school club as soon as possible each day. Children can freely play and take advantage of the centres facilities including dance floor craft and chillout areas. A snack bag is available supplied by Homeless Aid UK for each child who attends the after school club on a rolling snack basis so children can decide when to eat. Healthy Eating Guidelines are followed and each bag includes wraps or sandwiches with cheese or meat, vegetables, fruit, fresh orange juice and yoghurt.

## **Harmonize Youth Club**

Harmonize is our exciting new modernised youth group at Harmony youth centre and is aimed at eight to fifteen year olds, and runs every Friday 6pm till 9pm.

We use Music, Dance and Crafts as a tool to directly engage with young people giving them a platform to express themselves. We are holding fortnightly dance themed events at our centre in Halliwell where we provide a safe and secure space with music DJ’s, MC’s open mic, food, tuckshop lighting effects, pool, free WIFI, X- Box chill out area, all supervised by trained staff.

## **New Partner JD Sports Foundation**

After the BBC and ITV news reports, I was contacted by JD Sport representative, who offered us a 2-year partnership to support us with funding and donations of equipment to help create a positive relationship with our youngsters. True to their word, they supplied us with a number of JD goody bags, which contained Nike and Adidas backpacks and baseball caps to hand out to our young people.

## **Bolton at Home**

We have secured funding from Bolton at Home to enable us to continue to help disadvantaged young people and also struggling families through these difficult times. What does the funding mean to Harmony; As a youth support organisation, we have a duty of care and aim to achieve our goals by reaching out to young people to give positive links to information, opportunities, that they would not otherwise have access to. We have the space at our youth centre to accommodate many different groups, and we feel by bring our community together we can share the fun thing as well as help, support and advice. We will provide young people with access to counselling, information, support, and advice enabling them to grow in confidence and reach their true potential. This service will help break down barriers through information and education give young people the opportunity to embrace the cultures and backgrounds of Bolton's multi cultural and diverse community

## **The Limelight project**

We would like to introduce you to our Limelight Club. We offer this club to all the children in the Bolton and Greater Manchester area. We already work with schools in Bolton including projects developed with St Ethelbert’s. At the moment due to the covid situation we are unable to work in schools, so our project with schools have been put on hold. We will continue to run the project at our centre and offer all our young performers the opportunity to grow and learn with our professionally trained staff. The Limelight project is aimed at young people from 8-13 we hope to instil a fun and exciting way to develop musical talent, while encouraging a sense of discipline and focus.

Our team have a range of experience within the music industry and skills to help develop our young people’s knowledge of music and performance skills. The skills we can offer to young people will include breathing and breath control, help to develop singing in key, harmonies, and a sense of timing and rhythm, we will work with individual or through collaboration with others.

## **Summerzone 21**

Summerzone is an innovative project for children aged 5-18 that we have run for 20 years and is one of our most popular annual events. Designed to run during the school holidays, it would be ideal for children from families with low incomes from Halliwell and surrounding area. The project will be advertised across our social media platform as well as across our contacts and networks to inform children who otherwise may not have the opportunities that we offer here at Harmony, it will be also advertised in local chip shops, cafes etc. It will take place Monday – Friday (9-3pm) at our youth and media centre in Halliwell, Bolton and will provide a range of activities for young people delivered by a professional youth workers and volunteers. The day consist of a morning and afternoon session and would feature Pool/Ping Pong/Table Football competitions, Big Screen Movies & Xbox, Art's and Crafts, Indoor Games, Karaoke and DJ Workshops, Instrument tuition including Guitar, Piano drums

and percussion training. Hot and cold food and drinks, Party games and activities All carried out by professional experienced fully DBS certified staff.

## **Satellite Projects**

We are in the process of running bespoke projects and workshops at other centres throughout the Bolton areas that will help and encourage the positive interaction between a wide and diverse group of young people from various cultures and backgrounds. We at Harmony believes there are no greater mediums that can motivate and inspire young people than the arts, sports and recreational pursuits. There are also so many new and exciting job opportunities for young people through the social media outlet, such as marketing, design and even starting your own business in something they love to do such as makeup or gaming. With the right people providing the leadership in these fields, we believe the young people of Bolton will have much better opportunities to succeed.
