Achievements and performattee
The Summer Festival went ahead with a good deal more 5rability aNJ certainty ¢ompar¢d io the previous two years due
to the potential risk of Covid restriciions. This allowed a Festival with a greater variation of perfomiance including
expansion into a folk direction for one concert. The theme was 'Soundscapes' which consisted of 15 conceTts across an
expartded week%. The them¢ took its inspiration from nature, the seasons, and Ihe elernents - all expressed through
music. After nearly three years of the Covid contrxi, there wa5 a strong anisti¢ desire to touch base with the environment
arouttd and above us. Th¢ music chosen was either directly or indirealy inspired by the forces of the natural world, at
times thematically. or perhaps io portray a particular Lsptct of natt￿¢ itself.
This year we were able to re-acce5s some of our churches but the main bulk of activity took place in the specially hired
rnarque¢ in Welburn Manor. Other Concerts werc held in Coxwold, Danby and Egton Bridge which allowed us 3 wider
distribution aGross th¢ North York M¢x)rs than the previous Dvo years. Whilsi the use of th¢ marque¢ is a great expense.
the Trustees weTe clear that it was the least risk in tem￿ of potential restriciions. Audience feedback undertaken after the
Soundscapes Festival showed a strong de5Lre to wnlinue with the mngernenl if the funding could be secured. The
TTU51ees were delighied tha( there was a strong response from audience members with the 2023 costs raised within a
couple of months. The Tr￿tte$ are inunen5ely grateful for this support.

Report of the trustees (incorporatiDg Ibe directors, report)
for the year ended 31 March 2023
Concert attendances at the Summer Fesiival were consistently Str(￿Ig and on¢¢ agoin there was on organis¢d holiday tour
(through a trav¢] agency spe¢iolising in classical music iours) which reSul￿d in a large number of attendees in the second
week. Ticket income remained very healthy and incre&%ed sufficientty to help defray ¢xtra expenditure. The Trustees
continue to ensure public benefit by allowing affordable access lo world class music in local seuings. Following a
rinancial r¢view of costs and fiwther benchrnarking in 2021 the Trustee5 did incr£￿e licket prices for 2022 but are
satisfied the cos¢ remains considernbly cheaper than (Hher professional chaJnber music concens or festivals within
northern England. Onc¢ win efforts were also made ￿ markei and encourage younger people 10 attend. this included
discounted and free tickets.
With the diminishing impact of the Covid pandemic. it was much easier to source venues for concerts outsid¢ of the
summer festival period. A Launch Concen was held in Kirkbymoorside in December 2022 which was sold out. a Winter
Concert was held in Si Hilda's Westcliff in l¥Tritby in March 2023. These allow the Fesiival to rethrn to its aim of having
a year round presence across differeni areas of the North Yotk Moors.
The Trustees were able to Secu￿ sufficient grants and donations ro ensure the 2022-23 period largely broke even in
temis of incorne and expenditure. The Trumees remain satisfied that ihe Fesiival is operaiing in a financially stable
manner. The Trustees met twice during the year 10 review governance and financial requirements and make decisions
regarding charitsble activity. We w¢r¢ delighted to welcome Dr Christine Kirk as a TTustre during the y¢8r as a
replaccment for Mrs Jane Dingle stepped down aftcr 8 ycar5 of Service. As always, we are grateful for all those who help
and support the fe￿ival behind the scen¢5 throughout the year.
Fillanci21 revieiv
