Aims & Purposes
TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF ORPHANED CHILDREN IN THE KAILAHUN DISTRICT OF SIERRA LEONE THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME WHICH INCLUDES
PROVIDING FOOD, SHELTER AND MEDICAL CARE AS REQUIRED BY EACH CHILD ON THE PROGRAMME.
Objectives & Activities
-
The main objective for 2020 – 2021 to ensure that the KIK academy is providing quality education for children in the Kailahun township and to become a government assisted school.

To continue to develop the land to support self sustainability of feeding programmes

To continue to upgrade facilities within the school.

To bring the pre school to the KIK academy site where children learn to speak English through play
-
To ensure that strict financial control is in place through the development of in country Finance committee. In country board of trustees set up comprising of beneficiaries’ who are now in a position to support other children on the programme. These trustees will insure that the charity meets is aims and objectives for the coming years.

Achievements & performance
-
The school has been fully operational for 4 years and has maintained a good standard of education examination results reflect this and the principal is now on the Government register for salary the remaining teachers are set to follow this academic year. The government is now contributing to the running costs of the school.

The school and project is now overseen by a finance committee which provides the much needed oversight on the financial controls within the school and agricultural project.

Work continues to ensure that the land is self sustainable – a beneficiary is now being sponsored to attend the GTI college and undertaking studies in agriculture

The IT suite has been upgraded with 6 laptops and a laser printer. A new IT teacher has been employed for the school
-
One of the older beneficiaries’ who is currently on the teachers distance learning course for economics has taken over the role of school bursar which will meet the requirement of the government.

5 male children who require KIK support due to being at high risk of abuse are now living on site .

The charity now employs 8 full time local employees and 12 teachers and 4 older children from the programme who are acting as Teaching Assistants in the school. Employment will increase with further development of the land

a. CONSTITUTION
Kids in Kailahun is registered as a Charity (No. 1129242) with the Charity Commission and operates from 2 Pendle View, Barley Burnley, BB12
9LA
b. METHOD OF APPOINTMENT OR ELECTION OF TRUSTEES
New Trustees are sought from time to time, usually to fill a perceived gap in the skill mix of the current Board. This is done usually by a direct approach to potential Trustees by an existing Trustee.
c. SAFEGUARDING
New Trustees are all DBS checked. Kids In Kailahun has a Child Protection Policy that all Trustees, Volunteers and Local staff adhere to at all
times.
d. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE AND DECISION MAKING
The Board of Trustees as a whole and Director are collectively responsible for the wellbeing of the Charity within a framework of prudent and
effective controls, which enable risk to be assessed and managed. They have also to ensure that the aims and objectives of the Charity are
maintained and to understand its obligations to all stakeholders that help to finance its operations.

e. VOLUNTEERS
The Trustees recognise the huge amount of work put in by its volunteers to support the work of Kids in Kailahun and that KIK simply could not
function without its volunteers.
Financial Review
Funds have been used on providing uniforms and school fees for the 100 children on the KIK programme
The maintenance of the school has been the priority for all fundraising efforts over this reporting period
Kids In Kailahun continues to provide a feeding programme for the most needy children on the KIK programme
Kids in Kailahun provides Free lunches for all children in the Primary sector of the school.
The charity is going into 2022 with reserves and has 3 years of unclaimed GIFT aid to apply for.
