Para 1.17
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing docurnent
To advance education by providing or
assisting in the provision of facilities for the
teaching development and supervision of
the playing of chess amongst persons
under the age of twenty-one years resident
in England and Wales or eligible to
represent England and Wales at chess so
as to develop their capabililies that they
may grow to full maturity as individuals and
members of societ
The main activities of the charity are
organizing and running the finals of the
London Junior Chess Charnpionships,
promoting the finals and the qualifying
events, working with organizers of the
qualifying events to ensure that they run
well and that the competitors have a good
experience. Promotion of finals and
qualifying events involves printing and
distributing leaflets and keeping
maintained website with key infomiation
about the events. Running the finals
requires hiring a venue suilable for playing
chess over five days (split either side of
Christmas with lfvo days befo￿ and three
days afterwards) with a capaGity large
enough for 400450 competitors and in
addition their parentslguardians. Running
the finals also requires paying staff who are
chess arbiters (registered with Ihe
international body FIDE) to run each age
group section. There is also a need for
additional help on the days of the fln81s for
administration and guidance for
Darentslauardians.

Achievements and Performance
SORP ￿ference
In 2023 we ran a Suc￿sSful event.
Several hundred children took part in
qualifier toumaments, and those that
qualified attended the LJCC Finals, at
University of Westminster Marylebone
Campus and University of Westminster
Harrow Campus.
Our events were well organised and chess
was played to a high standard.

Financial Review
Review of the charity's
financial posilion at the end
of the period
Para 1.21
Total cash funds.. £28,187. These are held
in the charity's Co-op bank account and are
available for immediate use.
The charity has no other monetary assets.
The charity has no investment assets.
The charity has assets held for use as
described in the box below 'Assets held by
the charity,.
The charity has payments to two arbiters
outstanding and has yet to be invoiced for
the ECF grading fees. These are likely to
total around £1000 and should be payable
in the followin
financial ear.
The following are the main reasons that the
charity holds reserves.
11 After building up reserves we will be
able to spend some of them on
equipment for the finals. This
includes clocks, sets and boards. If
we are able to do this then we will
be able to simplify the logistics of
events as we will not need to source
equipment from elsewhere and we
will also save money on the hire
fees that we will not need to pay.
2) Each year we have to pay Certain
expenses (such as venue hire)
before receiving all entry fees and
we need funds in the charity's
account to be able to pay for these.
3) There is some uncertainty about the
cost of venue hire each year and we
need to have enough in the charity's
account to be able to cope wilh

Para 1.47

Inveslment policy and
objeGlives including any
social investment policy
adopted
Para 1.46
No specific investment objectives.
Principal risks facing the charity are..
1) Increasing costs. particularly venue
hire and staff costs in an
increasingly professionalized chess
world.
2) Brand erosion. The charity requires
the finals to be run smoothly 50 that
competrtors and parentslguardians
enjoy them. This includes the
management of complaints and
having clear procedures and
policies for this. The is also a risk
associated with the qualifier events
which we as a charity do not
manage directly but they are
associated with the brand and so
we must endeavour to ensure that
qualifier organisers receive suitable
coaching where necessary so that
children and their parentslguardians
are satisfied with these events also.
3) Safeguarding. The finals host
around 400450 children and their
parenlslguardians at each of the
pre- and post-christmas events and
it is vital that we have adequate
safeguarding procedures in place.
