2024 Re ort and Accounts Parochial Church Council of Tickhill St Ma with Stainton St. Winifrid Incumbent's Introduction l am delighted to commend this year's annual report for your consideration. I would like to use this opportunity lo express my thanks to my colleagues in ministry the Lay Readers who assist in worship and take a good share in preaching and teaching '. the Churchwardens who fulfil their responsibilities so well, the members of the PCC, and its committees who are committed to the whole mission and ministry of the parish,. PCC officers, especially our PCC Secretary, Phil Beavers and our Treasurer, David Morley, who contribute so much to the efficient working of our parish life and good stewardship of our financial reSoUrs. Of note is the completion of the work this year in replacing our obsolete gas boilers, with new more efficient boilers. This was a challenging project, not jLFSt about cost, but also in administrative obstacles. Well done to The Fabric Team in seeing this through to the endl In a year in which the senior hierarchy of the national Church of England have fallen far short in their responsibilities towards safeguarding. I want to highlight Ihe excellent positive Contribution of our own Parish Safeguarding Officer, Louise Johnson. Her work in keeping our PCC informed, aware, and up to date with training and policies is invaluable as we seek to provide a safe environment for children, young people and vulnerable adults. Behind the financial figures, and the bare bones of the description of our activities, lie the enthusiasm. commitment and hard work of the whole church community and our supporters. Bell ringers and singers, flower arrangers and cleaners, tea and coffee makers, odd jobbers and handy workers, sacristy helpers and liturgical hangers, Bible readers and intercessors, visitors for baptism families and for the bereaved, keepers- in-touch through magazine, weekly sheets, website and Facebook, they all make huge contribution. Many thanks to them all. And thanks to all who worship here, all who offer their time, talents and financial support to this work and all of goodwill in the wider community who help support our work in the parish. Without their participalion in the life of our parish. both in Tickhill and Stainton, there would be little to report. Aim and Purpose. The Parochial Church Council of Tickhill St Mary with Stainton St. Winifrid (PCC) has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the church, pasloral. evangelistic, social, and ecumenical. It also has maintenance responsibility for the ¢hurch buildings within the parish. Objectives and Activities. The PCC remains committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our churches and to become part of our parish community at Tickhill and Stainlon. The PCC maintains an overview of worship throughout the parish and makes suggestions on how our services can involve the many groups that live within our parish. Our services and worship put failh into practice through prayer and scripture, music, and sacrament.
When planning activities for the year. we have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and the supplementary guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. We try to enable ordinary people to live out Iheir faith as part of our parish community through.. Worship, prayer, and communion (both in church. whenever possible. and by social media). learning about the gospel, developing knowledge and trust in Jesus. Provision of pastoral care for people living in the parish. especially the lonely and vulnerable members of our community. Missionary and Outreach work. To facilitate this work, it is important we diligently maintain the fabric of the churches and the more recent digilal link, which enjoys a permanent presence in our pattern of worship across our parish and beyond. Safeguarding and Health & Safety continue to take high priority and are regularly discussed at PCC meetings. The PCC has complied wilh the duty to have due regard to the House of Bishop's Guidance in relation to safeguarding. Achievements and Performance. Worship and Prayer The parish church of St Mary, Tickhill is open daily, affording all visitors to the church time for both private prayer and peaceful reflection. There are morning and evening services every Sunday. Together with the inclusion of a morning service on Wednesdays and 'Church Done Differently, on a monthly basis we offer a rich variety in our pattern of worship. St. Winifrid's, our chapel of ease at Stainton, has a monthly Sunday morning service of Holy Communion as another very welcome contribution to the pattern of serViS across the parish. We continue to provide occasional services in co-operation wilh Stainton Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee to mark Mothering Sunday, Easter, Harvest, Remernbran, and Christmas. All are welcome to attend services in our churches and through social media. At present there are 164 parishioners on the church electoral roll, 18 of whom were not resident within the parish. One name was added during the year and four were removed., having sadly died and two moving out of the area. The average weekly attendance, taking a typical Sunday from each month was 62 from 64 in 2023. The Church Done Differently, a relatively new 'Fresh Expression, at St. Mary's, added a very encouraging additional monthly average of 40 members of the parish to our worshipping community The average number of those attending worship remotely. was largely maintained. We have celebrated 25 Christenings {an increase of 2 on the previous year), 5 Weddings (a decrease of 1 on the previous year) and 18 Funerals lan increase of 1 on the previous year). Agrant is regularly made to St Mary's ICE) Nursery and Primary School which is funded partly by the Churches and match funded by The Tickhill with Stainton Parish Clerk's Trust. Each classroom continued to have a prayer corner and active worship continued to take place on every school day.
We have three places representing our parish on the Deanery Synod which provides the PCC with an important link between the parish and the wider structures of the church. We have a team of volunteers who prepare the church for occasional services and open the church daily, giving the community access for a time of quiet reflection and private prayer. New central heating boilers have now been installed and commissioned at St Mary's, much welcomed by the congregation and our many visitors. Obtaining permission to undertake this work however has been somewhat challenging. which sadly delayed the installation programme and resulled in the need for temporary heating in the church during Advent. 2025 will see more exploratory work being undertaken to further improve the ambient heating across the church. The church website and social media platforms continue to be very active during the year, being a valuable public relalions resource in broadcasting the life of our Chufches in the parish, and beyond. The church continues to remain compliant under GDPR legislation. Provision of Pastoral care Pastoral work has continued with vigour in the parish, keeping in touch with the lonely, the vulnerable and the sick. Missionary and Outreach Members of our Mothers, Union have conlinued to support the valuable work of the Women's, Refuge. The weekly notice sheet has been prepared and sent by email to 85 members of the parish on a weekly basis. Throughout the year we have continued to send significant monthly contributions to neighbouring foodbanks. Our monthly parish magazine is distributed by a team of volunteers and is also available at the back of both churches. The magazine keeps parishioners informed of important matters affecting the church and articles that help develop knowledge and trust in Jesus. St Mary's Church of England Primary School is supported by a committed team of Foundation Governors alongside those representing the staff, and those appointed by the local authority and parents. The School Chaplain, Jenny Hosker, supports the school's provision of pastoral care, collective worship, and Religious Education. Ecumenical Relationships Our Roman Catholic friends were able to meet for Community Mass in St. Mary's church on several occasions during the year. This continues a long and very welcome tradition. We continue to take part in the aclivities of Tickhill Churches Together, including participation in The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Lent Course. Good Friday and Easter United Acts of Witness, Christian Aid Week events etc.
Volunteers We would like to thank all the volunteers who work so hard within our church. They are too numerous to mention separately, but to you all, without whose help and Commitment our church could not flourish, a heartfelt thank you. Financial Review Total receipts into the General Fund were £91.6351£90,582 in 20231 and these are detailed in the financial accounts. £90,028 (£52,143) was spent to provide Christian ministry from St. Mary's Church and St. Winifrid's Church. The net result for the year, therefore, was an excess of income over expenditure amounting to £1607. In 2023, payment of Diocesan Common Fund, initially pledged at £60,000, was restricted to £15,000 after consultation with the Diocese to make funds available to assist in the replacement of the church boilers which, as reported elsewhere in this report, were installed this year. The amount in reserve on General Fund brought forward into 2024 includes this 'saving'. A transfer of £45,000 has subsequently been made from General Account to the New Development Fund Unrestricted Account. As the name suggests these funds remain unrestricted i.e. they can be used for any purpose at the discretion of the PCC. Common Fund payments amounted to £45,000 this year in accordance with our pledge to DI0Se. The PCC remains most grateful for the support it continues to receive from its congregation. The 100 Club once again raised substantial funds and remains an important part of our annual fund raising. Close monitoring of finances to meet the financial challenges ahead will continue to be required, especially with responsibility of financing the upkeep of buildings. In addition, the parish is now beginning to feel the impact of increased energy costs - electricity Contracts were renewed in Autumn 2024 and our new gas contract at Tickhill has shown a very substantial increase. Reserves Policy The PCC aims to keep two months wnning costs by way of unrestricted reserves to ensure there is sufficient working capital to fund the running of the church. In formulating this policy, the PCC has considered Ihe need to make appropriate contingency for unseen events, to plan for known expenditurelevents and to make allowance for income sources, not realising expected budgeted levels.
Structure, Governance and Management. The Parochial Church Council is a corporate body established by the Church of England. The PCC operates under the Parochial Church Council Powers Measure. The Parochial Church Council of Tickhill St Mary with Stainton St. Winifrid is part of the Diocese of Sheffield within the Church of England. The PCC is a registered charity. The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. At the Parochial Church Council of Tickhill St Mary with Stainton St. Winifrid the membership of the PCC consists of three churchwardens (being ex-offi¢io and two being in post since the Annual Church Meeting on 21.05.2024, leaving one vacancy), INO Readers are ex-officiol and its membership elected by Ihose members of the congregation who are on the Electoral Roll. Everyone who attends our Seice$, indeed all members of the congregation, are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and consider standing for election to the pcc. At the APCM in 2022 the concept of a three-year term for elected lay members of the PCC, by rotation, was agreed. It was then revisited at the APCM in 2023 when the transitional arrangements were agreed, enabling its application and for it to reviewed on an ongoing basis. This matter will appear on the agenda for the Annual Church Meeting in 2025. PCC members are corporately responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance lo the parish, including deciding on how the funds of the PCC are to be spent. New members receive initial training into the workings of the pcc. The Standing Committee, made up of three churchwardens (currently two in office and subject to election), treasurer, secretary and PCC representatives to a similar number as churchwardens. It Is available as a quick decision-making group, where necessary. It regularly meets before the PCC to formulate the agenda and discuss pertinent issues. The PCC met 8 limes during Ihe year (an increase of 1 over the previous year) with an average level of attendance of 84 % (unchanged on the previous year). Given its wide responsibilities the PCC has several committees each dealing with a particular aspect of parish life. These committees, which include Mission. Fabric, and Events and Social, are all responsible to the PCC and report back to it regularly, minutes of their decisions being received by the full PCC and discussed, as necessary. John Hoare was a Deanery Synod Rep. and Noreen Sweed was a Deanery Synod Rep. and the Lay Chair of the Deanery Synod.
