we give careful consideration lo any org8nisation wshing to use the fa¢ilities. therefo￿ charities and local

The Institute recognises the importanee of education and life leaming skills as key priorities and continued to
develop partnerships wlh relevant organisations, such as GAVO and Adult Leaming Wales to respond to the
needs of our community. We have a growng need for parenb"ng. healthy eating and Teadability classes
throughout Blaenau Gwent,. accordingly. we a￿ prowding. wlh the assistsnce of these or9antsalions and our

Our Volunteews
Volunteefs play a malty part in the success of 8¢1i¥its"es and evenl$ wthin the Inslitute. have a volunteer
slratggy which encompasses the training and development of the indNi¢Jual. re9ul¥ reviews and training
opporlunities being hi9hlighted.
In nomial times, we have around 35 active volunteers. ar￿ others who support from time to lime. Volunteers
range from members of the Board (dealing ￿th govemance. strategic and business issues). Luncheon Club
support, and helping OLrt with the general day to day fvncbons of the Instrtute. such as Special Events. Weddings
and Farnily Events as well as a range ol community a¢ti¥itie$. We have abo introduced a f¢)mial Volunteering
programme as part of our V￿VA and 'Hive' pfojects.

Food Olstrfbution Centre
Durin9 the pandemic we sel up a 'Food Pantry.. distributing free food lo individuals and families locally. We
piloted and implemented a new programme-'Cook Fresh. wheo we have provided 50 familie$ and indiwduals a
week with a healihy meal for 4-6 people w￿￿ete with cooknng in$truclions for a conlnbution of £3.
'The Hlv•' Project
Following on from our very successful 'Hive' pilot prcgramme. where the main elements of the project were the
Comrnunity Fs)od Hub, Readabilty (Adult Lileracyl and Volunteering, the 'Hl¥e Connect. Project - UK Shared
Prosperity Fund IVKSPFI People & Skills. administered via BGCBC. has funded the 'Hwe' proje¢t since June
2023.
The concept was that these projects and. irKleed. our c￿*b Llan project, should not be viewed in isolation bul that
participants could be cross•referred behveen one part of the Programme and another. Thu5, for example
someone who was a volunteer could be referred into our Readability programme anL1 vice versa. For individL4als
who engage in la110￿￿ se5sions', we ¢arefully and confidentially recortl individuals. progress throughout the
process by means of Individual Development Plans. requi￿ evaluations from participants on all courses and
programmes.

This project commenced on a pilot basis in November 2023. Entitled 'Numbercrunch', it uses cooking to
develop participants fijnctional numeracy.
This was a very difficutt programme to deliver.
In the middle stages of the PTOgramme, we sfanted our Cook Fresh programme lowa¥ds numeracy, aTrJ
budgeting as well as subsidised food and cojking. with 70 people participating.
Participants overall to end March 2025, 298- wilh 147 refeffed from partner cKgani$ations.
65 numeraw coufses delivered wlh 22 dtherent cohorts.
80% of participants gained new lrfe skills, 30% gained new numeracy skills. and 28% improved their
budgeting skims.

Monthty Lunch Club
Lunch Club proves lo be very popular and eonsislenty attracts around 70 people each month. The Lunch Club
conkn.nues to host a Ftipup ehanty shop for the 'Hospice of the Valleys. on a monthty basis. generating income of
Ipproxim8lely £1.500 per annum.
Community Groups at the In$litule
The weekly Knit and Natter group became constrtLrted in January 2018 and goes from strength to strength. They
have continued lo support national and local charth.es by creating. selling and donating knitted rtems. including
poppies, the income from which 15 donated to the Bntish Legion. The group ncrw has a monthly tabbe
Luncheon Club and have joined us at Communty events such as St Iutyds ChFiStmas Far to taise fur#ts.

wedding5, private and business parties and celebrations, and runs and ho$l$ commercial events. Charges are

rates and. lo Support affordabilty. discounts from stsndard Tates are provided to thè local ¢cffimunty and lrtal
community organisatims.

years. when the shift to working digitally increased s￿nIfican￿ due lo the pandemic. The majority of marketing
and promots'on is done digrtally ￿￿ng various s¢)cial media platlorms, our websrte and third-paty platfomis and
website$ le.g. Google My Bu￿ness} bLrt trad￿Onal form5 of markeb.ng are still used for promotion. Soclal media
platromis continue lo grow wrth followers ￿ like5 continuing lo iruease and increased numbers of p051tive
reviews. Work has been undertaken lo fvrther develop Our brand, the websrte, Indr¥idual Giving and Corporate
Sponsorship as a new means of fvndrai%rffJ. Great stndes have been made in building our digital profile and we
now have a firm foundakn.on on to fvrther develop our strategy and forward plan lo grow bland 'Llanhillelh

At 31 January 2025 the ¢harty had unrestrKled reser¥es of £32.342 (2024.. £18.196} aThJ unspenl restricted
reserves of £121,220 {2024'. £84.892). The charivs free reseThes were £32.342 at 31 January 2025. Total
reserves were £153,56212024.. £103.088).
Plans for FutUTe Periods
aim lo budd on OUT past succe￿e$ and encourage new relalionships with other organisalions. We plan for
Llanhbllelh Miners Institute to become increasingly prominent as the key Communty Hub for the area, working
wilh others in Community Engagement in general as well as in speufic projects.
To support these ambrtions, the 1nsb.tute works in accordan￿ the strategy set by the Board.
Structure, govèrnin¢• and management
Tom lthyatt MBE is Chaii of the Board of Direct￿$. The Board sel$ the organiWion's strategic and opwalional
direction is responsible for the fLrture development of Ihe Institute. Regular Board meetings are held.
Due to fundin9 constraints. the Institute was wthout a General Manager from 2012 until 2017. In the meantsme,
the Institute was sustained by the loyalty and efforts of ils staff an(J volunteers supported by sorne very generous
and timely extemal funding. As slated above, longer lemi ￿artS a￿ held ￿th WCVA antj Barclays (Bounce 8ack
Loan). Funding was obtained in 2017 to appoint a General Manager. bul reg￿ttably. due to funding conslrainls,
we were unable to maintain the position of General Manager beyond the end of August 2019. and. since
September 2019. the role has been fuffiiied by members of the Board. Staff have prov(ded their fuN support. To
fulfil the strategic direction. the Board appointed a full time Community Engagement Manager and a fvll time
Operations Manager repo￿.n9 directly to the Board. These roles are supported by a full th.me Project Coordinator
and a part time Finance offi￿r. They all remained in post during the repo￿"n9 year.
Goveming document
Llanhilleth Miners Institute is a Charitsble Cc4npany, L￿nited by Guarantee, and the goveming documents were
filed with Companie$ House on 18 January 2007. the date of Incorporation. Followng advi¢e from Wales C
operative Cenlre. the Instilule amended Ihe 9oveming documents on the 20 Seplember 2012 al an Extraordinary
General Meeting.
The memberghip fee is a token payment of £1 per annum.
New Board members shall be elected indi¥idualty at each Anr￿1 General Meeting by all members present.
Risk Man•gement
The Directors and Trustees have a comp￿he￿Ve risk register vknich is wulaty reviewed. 11 details the
likelihood and impact of the risks that the organisalion co￿1 face.. the establishment of plans to mitigate those

1.1 A¢¢ounllng ¢omiention
The finanual slatements have been wepwed in &cordance wrth the chanty's goveming d¢xument. the
Companies Act 2006 and "Accounting and Reportin9 by Charilie5'. Statement of Recommended Practice
applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard
applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland {FRS 102) {effeclive 1 January 20191. The chority is a Public
Benefit Entty as defined by FRS 102.
The finanaal statements are prepared in sterling. which is the frjnctional currency of the tharity. Monetary
amounts in these finanaal stslements a￿ rounded to tr* nearest £.
The financial statements have been prepa￿ under histLYul cost convention. The principal a¢eounling
policies adople¢J are set out below.
1.2 Going ¢on¢¢rn
At the time of appfoving the ffinanci￿ statements. the tnjstees have a reasonable expecL*ion Ihat the charity
has adequate fesour¢es lo continLre in yrational existence for the fofeseeable futu￿. Thus the tnjslees
contsnue lo adopt the 90ing concern basis of acco￿ting in preparing the financial statements.
1.3 Charitable
Unreslricted funds are avwlable ftw use al the dixretion of Ihe trustees in furtherance of Ihgir charitable
objectives.
Re$lrieted fvnds are subject to sperjfic conditions ty don¢ys or grantors as lo how they may be used. The
purposes and uses of Ihe restricted funds are set ¢wt in Ihe notes to the financial slatements.
1.4 Income
Income is recognised when Ihe charity is legally enlitled to it after any performance conditions have been met,
thè amounls can be measured reliably. and rt is probable that intA)me will be received.
Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donali¢)ns are recogniseil once the charity has been notsfied
of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferTal of the amount. Income lax re￿verable in
relation to donations receNed under GiftAid or deeds of covenant is recognised al the time of the donation.
