The trustees, who are also the directors for the purposes of company law, present their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2025.
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in notes to the accounts and comply with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and Companies Act 2006 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland published in October 2019.

Objectives and activities
The aim of the Charity is to promote, maintain, improve and advance education by the encouragement of the arts including, without limitation, the arts of drama, mime, dance and music. We review our aims, objectives and activities each year. This review looks at what we achieved and the outcomes of our work in the 12 months to 31 March 2025.
We have referred to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives and in planning our future activities. In particular, the Trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives they have set. The activities of the Charity, subcategorised into Main activities, and Fundraising activities are described further in the Achievement and performance section of the Trustees Report.
Public benefit
In shaping our objectives for the year and planning our activities, the trustees have considered the Charity Commission's guidance, including that on public benefit and fee-charging. We believe that Yorke Dance Project is one of the UK's most creative and accessible dance companies.
We aim to inspire audiences with work that is entertaining, relevant, exciting and technically excellent. We are committed to inclusion and access and the belief that dance and music are art forms for everyone to experience, participate in and enjoy. Creating new work is an essential part of ensuring that our art form remains vibrant and relevant. We commission new music, films and costuming for our works, adding richness to the cultural offer of the country.
With support of our major funders, we present world class performances of the widest possible range of repertory throughout the United Kingdom in middle and small-scale venues, cinemas and art galleries. We work hard to ensure that cost does not prohibit access to our performances. Tickets for performances in the UK are priced across affordable ranges (from free events to ticket prices between £5.00 and £45.00) which reflect the regional economies where we perform. We also offer a wide range of concessions and special offers on ticket prices. Where possible we work in association with venues to ensure schools can access our performances at affordable rates and they are supported by our education and community engagement work. To complement this the charity offers, when possible, a Youth Leaders Programme, Professional Pathways Programme and apprenticeships for graduating students, supporting and developing the next generation of dance leaders and dancers in rural and market towns. We offer opportunities including free dance training for talented individuals, repertory-based programmes for schools and community groups, bespoke workshops for local comprehensive schools for free and continuing professional development for professional dancers and teachers.
We also offer internship opportunities to young professionals who are just setting out in the field following their conservatory training. Many of our projects include free access to a Yorke Dance Project performances ensuring that no child or young person is excluded due to financial constraints. Above all we believe in the importance of taking the arts to everyone and work hard, through dance and music, to break down those barriers perceived or real that exclude people from the pleasure of experiencing or engaging in the arts in their many and varied forms.

Achievements and performance
The activities, achievements and performances of the charity are detailed below:
Main activities
Touring & Performances
In March 2024, Yorke Dance Project brought their latest touring programme CALIFORNIA CONNECTIONS to the Linbury Theatre, Royal Ballet and Opera, London. The programme, which had already played in Leeds, then went on to have its final performance at the Winchester Theatre Royal on 23 April 2024.
CALIFORNIA CONNECTONS saw the company celebrating the work of four choreographer and dancers, each with strong ties to the American West, including Martha Graham, Bella Lewitzky, Isadora Duncan and Yorke Dance Project's artistic director, Yolande Yorke-Edgell.
Also in April, Yorke Dance Project's took their film of film of Kenneth MacMillan's Hamlet-inspired ballet Sea of Troubles, directed by David Stewart, to Dorchester Arts for a special screening followed by a talkback with Deborah MacMillan, widow of the choreographer and trustee of the MacMillan estate. While in Dorchester, YDP also held a showing of the film in a local school.
In May, the company began work on creating their first film feature cinema release, Dance Revolutionaries, comprised of Robert Cohan's Portraits, formerly titles, Lockdown Portraits and Kenneth MacMillan's Sea of Troubles. YDP worked again with director David Stewart, along with Mandy Kean from Mustard Studios, to edit and package the film for nationwide cinema release in the summer.
On 24 June, DANCE REVOLUTIONARIES premiered at the Chiswick Cinema, former home of Rambert Dance Company. The evening was hosted by Rambert School principal Amanda Britton with a panel discussion following the screening. Director David Stewart and the film's star Dane Hurst answered questions from the sold-out audience.
In July, the film went on general release, primarily through one-off, "event-cinema" screenings, with several "encore" screenings as well. Altogether, DANCE REVOLUTIONARIES screened 116 times at 86 cinemas across the UK.
In August, while DANCE REVOLUTIONARIES was still being screened, YDP began working with celebrated UK choreographer, Christopher Bruce on creating a new work for our next touring programme MODERN MILESTONES. In September, a group of YDP dancers and guest artists began research and development sessions developing Bruce's TROUBADOUR, a piece for 8 dancers to music by Leonard Cohen. The company worked in Frome, Somerset where Bruce's son, the choreographer Mark Bruce, has a studio.
Bruce's TROUBADOUR will become one of the featured works on the MODERN MILESTONES programme, which celebrates significant milestones in contemporary dance including Bruce's 80th birthday, Robert Cohan's centenary & the 100th anniversary of the Martha Graham Dance Company.
Throughout the autumn, as Bruce continued work on TROUBADOUR, finishing an initial draft in December, YDP put further plans in place for work on MODERN MILESTONES. The company decided to engage young choreographer Liam Francis as its first associate artist for the production. In addition to making a new work for the programme, Yorke-Edgell and associate director, Stephen Pelton, would mentor Francis as he began work establishing his own company Francis Dance Company. His associate artist position began in January 2025.
On 6 March 2025, YDP once again participated in a collaborative event at Dance Scholarship Oxford, as part of DANSOX's Sleep and the Rhythms of Life project. YDP dancers performed excepts from Between

Sleeping and Waking as well as from Bella Lewitzky's META 4. Additional speakers and participants included Sebastian Klinger, author of Sleep Works: Experiments in Science and Literature, 1899-1929; Akanksha Bafna, researcher at Oxford's Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute; Eric Clarke, Emeritus Heather Professor of Music, and expert in the psychology of music; and Roger Smith and Irina Sorotkin, authors of numerous works on the history of dance, and also Kinaesthesia. An audience of about 60 attended.
Also in March, the company hosted a private screening at Soho House of their work-in-progress: Movement of the Mind-Robert Cohan on Film: His Work, In His Words. With support from the Abderrahim Crickmay Charitable Settlement, the company created the first few chapters of Cohan's "film-book", conceived with the choreographer during the Covid pandemic. This exceptional, visual journey into dance, narrated by Robert Cohan, is an important part of our dance heritage. Not only will it be an essential resource for libraries and universities, but also an art book bringing movement to life through Cohan's words. Movement of the Mind has the support of the British Library who will archive the finished book as part of their Drama and Literature Recordings, Sound and Vision Collection. The preview screening was attended by a fullhouse of 45 people.
Professional Development and Training
While in rehearsals for CALIFORNIA CONNECTIONS, YDP invited professional dancers to be guests in company class where they participated alongside members of the company as they trained for the day's work.
Educational Activities
In September 2022, after several Covid-related setbacks, YDP had finally produced their film of Kenneth MacMillan's Hamlet-inspired ballet, Sea of Troubles. The film premiered on 10 October 2023 at the Royal Opera House in conjunction with World Mental Health Day. Following which YDP developed a new workshop entitled MINDFUL, in collaboration with HFEH MIND, mental health charity. These workshops, which were offered to 12-15 years-olds, picked up on themes and characters in the film to give participants a physical experience of employing their personal creativity to help with their overall mental health challenges. While the workshops themselves took place in late 2023 and early 2024, creatives and educators from both HFEH MIND and YDP met several times in April and May 2025 to evaluate MINDFUL, discuss future workshops and produce the final report.
Fundraising & Governance
Yorke Dance Project's Board of Trustees had their first meeting of the fiscal year on 24 September 2024. (An earlier meeting in April was cancelled due to illness.) Another meeting took place on 21 January 2025. We are currently seeking to broaden and diversify our board.
During this fiscal year, Back Fore, a company that is a long-standing patron of YDP, partnered with us to deliver our annual fundraising golf day at Loch Lomond Golf Club in July 2024; The event raised over £45,000.
In February 2025 YDP received a grant of £25,000 from Cockayne Grants for the Arts for the London premiere of MODERN MILESTONES. This was complemented by miscellaneous donations across the year amounting to just over £10,000.
Friends and Family Fundraising Scheme: The charity continues to run our yearly membership scheme. There are a small but steady number or friends which the company hopes to further expand upon in the coming year.

Financial review
During the year, the Charity saw a small decrease in total income to £221,090 (2024: £223,677), the majority of which was provided by donations, grant income and fundraising income. Expenditure also decreased during the year to £210,113 (2024: £286,542).
The movement is predominantly due to a change in activities as detailed in this report and also reflects the plans for future period productions which occur after this financial period. The Charity ended the year making a surplus of £10,977 (2024: Deficit of £62,865).
The cash at bank and in hand balance of the charity increased to £19,834 as at the year end date.
Principal funding source
The majority of the Charity's income is received by a variety of individual supporters by way of unrestricted donation, significant amount of grant and fundraising income was received during the year also. The Charity is not reliant on one specific income source however a key part of its development plan for the future is to increase its sources of income so as to spread its risk.
Reserves policy
The Charity's reserves policy is to maintain reserves at a level adequate to protect its ongoing work from significant fluctuations in funding. The Trustees believe that 3 months unrestricted, charitable activities expenditure, currently £39,680 (2024: £80,307) would be an appropriate level of reserves at the year end. The Charity's unrestricted reserves are in deficit of £18,049 (2024: £29,026) at the year end date.
The Trustees will endeavour to build reserves over the next 12-24 months from fundraising events and grant applications in order to continue with its charitable objective. The Trustees will closely monitor cash reserves to ensure the success of this future project.

Plans for future periods
The company's upcoming activities include:
From April 2025, the company will begin work on further building their MODERN MILESTONES programme. Grant applications will be written to previous funders Cockayne Grants for the Arts and Arts Council England, while new potential funders, including Idlewild Foundation and Jerwood Foundation are approached.
In summer, the company will begin to assemble the dances who will perform the programme: YDP dancers Ellie Ferguson and Amy Thake will go to New York with Yorke-Edgell to learn Martha Graham's 1937 solo Deep Song from Graham repetiteur, Elizabeth Auclair; Liam Francis will begin creating his work CAST for four YDP company members; Lewitzky Dance Legacy Trustee John Pennington will come from California to teach Lewitzky's Kinaesonata to the full company; and rehearsals to revive Robert Cohan's Lacrymosa will also take place.
Full company rehearsals will continue in October before MODERN MILESTONES gets its out-of-town premiere at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds on 15 November. This show will be followed by two performances at Memorial Theatre, Frome on 28 & 29 November.
Following the Christmas break, rehearsals will resume in preparation for the London premiere of MODERN MILESTONES at the Linbury Theatre, RBO from 19-22 January 2026.
In March 2026, if funding permits, the company will film Robert Cohan's Lacrymosa, with David Stewart and Yorke-Edgell co-directing. It will be performed by original cast members Laure Dalley Smith, currently with the Martha Graham Dance Company, and celebrated UK freelance artist, Jonathan Goddard.
In tandem with their artistic work, the company will continue working to strengthen its financial position by securing sponsorship and applying for project funding from Arts Council England. They will also develop their infrastructure, recruit new board members and bring on an administrator.

Structure, governance and management
Yorke Dance Project Ltd, also known as YDP or Yorke Dance is a Company Limited by Guarantee (Registered Number 06842496) incorporated on 10 March 2009 and a Registered Charity (Number 11128891). The Charity was registered on 30 March 2009 and is governed by a Memorandum and Articles of Association dated 10 March 2009.
The Trustees, who are also the directors for the purpose of company law, and who served in the year are shown on the information page in the reference and administration details of these accounts.
Risk management
Management has reviewed the major risks to which the Charity is exposed. Where appropriate systems or procedures have been established to mitigate the risks the Charity faces. As is the case for many Charities, external funding represents a risk to the stability of the Charity. YDP enjoys the support from a number of loyal donors, costs are closely monitored to ensure the Charity operates within its means and the Charity maintains some reserves, all of which minimise exposure to this risk.
Organisational and decision making structure
Yorke Dance Project Ltd is a registered Charity and a company limited by guarantee. A Board of Trustees is responsible for managing the business of the Charity, holding an Annual General Meeting each year. Responsibility for the day to day running for the Charity is delegated to Y Yorke-Edgell, the founder and former patron whom is a current dancer and choreographer for the Charity.
Appointment, induction and training of trustees
Trustees are appointed at the Annual General Meeting or by resolution of the Board of Trustees. The number of Trustees shall not be less than three and the total number is not subject to any maximum unless otherwise determined by an ordinary resolution of the Annual General Meeting. It is the policy of the Trust to appoint new trustees by personal invitation given knowledge of their skills and background.
Most Trustees are already familiar with the work of the Charity and upon appointment are provided with a new Trustee pack. This pack includes a copy of the governing document, recent Trustee meeting minutes and a copy of the last set of financial statements.
Independent examiner reappointment
A resolution to appoint A Robinson FCA of Lovewell Blake LLP as independent examiner will be proposed at the next Annual General Meeting.
Small company provisions
This report has been prepared taking advantage of the small companies' exemption of section 415A of the Companies Act 2006.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the financial statements of the company for the year ended 31 March 2025 which comprise the statement of financial activities (including income and expenditure account), balance sheet and the related notes.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act’).
Having satisfied myself that the financial statements of the company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your company's financial statements as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

Notes to the financial statements

1. General information
The charity is a public benefit entity and a private company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales and a registered charity in England and Wales. The address of the registered office is 47a, Flat 1 Exmouth Market, London, EC1R 4QL.
2. Statement of compliance
The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland issued in October 2019, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), the Charities Act 2011, the Companies Act 2006 and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.
3. Accounting policies
Basis of preparation
The financial statements have been prepared on the historical cost basis.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the entity.
Going concern
The accounts have been prepared on a going concern basis, as the trustees are satisfied that no material uncertainties exist. In reaching this conclusion, the trustees have considered the level of funds held and the projected income and expenditure for the 12 months following approval of these financial statements. These projections reflect measures taken to address the current deficit. The budgeted income has been set prudently, taking into account fundraising performance for the year ended 2025, and the Charity continues to benefit from ongoing support from trusted affiliates.
The organisation operates in a challenging funding environment and future plans are under review. The trustees recognise that significant decisions will need to be made in light of the evolving funding landscape, but remain confident that the company will be in a stronger position to project forward and map next steps once these key developments materialise. On this basis, the trustees consider it appropriate to prepare the accounts on a going concern basis for the year ending 31 March 2025.
Income tax
The taxation receipts represent the aggregate amount of current and deferred tax debtors recognised in the reporting period.
Current tax is recognised on taxable income or expenditure for the current and past periods. Current tax is measured at the amounts of tax expected to pay or recover using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted at the reporting date.

Fund accounting
The unrestricted general fund represents funds that are expendable at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the objects of the charity. Such funds may be held to finance both working and capital investment.
Restricted funds, where applicable represent funds subject to restrictions on their use imposed by the donor or through an appeal.
Income
All income is included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has passed to the charity, it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the charity and the amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:

income from donations or grants is recognised when there is evidence of entitlement to the gift, receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably.

income from charitable activities relating to contracts for performances and workshops is recognised with the delivery of the contracted service. This is classified as unrestricted funds unless there is a contractual requirement for it to be spent on a particular purpose and returned if unspent, in which case it may be regarded as restricted.

income from other trading activities, including fundraising income is recognised as other trading income when there is evidence of an exchange element, evidence of entitlement, receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably. Income from other trading activities is recognised on an accruals basis.

investment income is recognised when there is evidence of entitlement, receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of the statement of financial activities to which it relates:

expenditure on raising funds includes the costs of all fundraising activities, events, non-charitable trading activities, and the sale of donated goods.

expenditure on charitable activities includes all costs incurred by a Charity in undertaking activities that further its charitable aims for the benefit of its beneficiaries, including those support costs and costs relating to the governance of the Charity apportioned to charitable activities.

other expenditure includes all expenditure that is neither related to raising funds for the Charity nor part of its expenditure on charitable activities.
All costs are allocated to expenditure categories reflecting the use of the resource. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs are apportioned between the activities they contribute to on a reasonable, justifiable and consistent basis.

Financial instruments
A financial asset or a financial liability is recognised only when the entity becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.
Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at the amount receivable or payable including any related transaction costs, unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where it is recognised at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest for a similar debt instrument.
Current assets and current liabilities are subsequently measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be paid or received and not discounted.
Debt instruments are subsequently measured at amortised cost.
4. Limited by guarantee
The charity is a company limited by guarantee and does not have share capital. In the event of liquidation the liability of the members is limited to £10 each.

9. Staff costs
The average head count of employees during the year was Nil (2024: Nil) and therefore the Charity has no requirement to analyse staff costs and employee benefits for the reporting period.
No employee received employee benefits of more than £60,000 during the year (2024: Nil).
10. Trustee remuneration and expenses
During the year no expenses were reimbursed to any Trustees (2024: £Nil). No Trustee received remuneration during the year.

Restricted funds
The Arts Council - Cultural Recovery Fund - relates to grants that were restricted for cultural recovery in line with the objectives of the Charity and the conditions of the grant application. All money to complete the project has been spent accordingly and assessed through a final activity report submitted to the Arts Council and independently certified. The remaining underspend remains and the Trustees will engage in communications to consider repayment or transfer to the general funds of the charity.

15. Related parties
During the year ended 31 March 2025, donations totalling £32,678 (2024: £10,000) were received from Y Yorke-Edgell and entities related to Y Yorke-Edgell by virtue of family shareholdings. At the year-end, loans outstanding to these entities amounted to £40,000 (2024: £31,678) and were included within creditors due within one year. Y Yorke-Edgell is the current Artistic Director of the charity and a former patron.
