Annual Report 2022
LIFEbeat Charity Purposes and Activities
Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document.
Summary of the main acvies in relaon to those purposes for the public benefit, in parcular, the acvies, projects or services idenfied in the accounts.
LIFEbeat’s mission is to build creave communies to improve the wellbeing of young people - giving them the skills and inspiraon to overcome the challenges they face, navigate the divisions in society and lead confident, healthy and purposeful lives. Creavity is at the heart of LIFEbeat’s values. Our unique approach embeds the arts and creavity at the heart of all our programmes and training delivery. LIFEbeat has two main purposes:
-
To advance in life and relieve the needs of young people through:
-
The provision of recreaonal and leisure me acvies provided in the interest of social welfare, designed to improve their condions of life.
-
Providing support and acvies which develop their skills, capacies and capabilies to enable them to parcipate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
-
To advance the educaon and training of adults in skills using art-based pracces that can be used in parcular but not exclusively in-group facilitaon of young people to enliven learning, inspire full parcipaon, build group cohesion and develop safe environments, which enable authenc communicaon.
Our programmes focus on four themac areas, which are the basic resources for a resilient life. The young people on our programmes explore these areas, building a greater understanding of themselves and others:
-
Self-esteem
-
Emoonal literacy
-
Social skills
-
Resilience
We also seek to contribute to a society where adults are fully empowered and supported in using their own creavity and experience in order to mentor young people in posive and facilitave ways.
LIFEbeat Community
LIFEbeat is a community of youth, staff, volunteers, organisaonal partners and funders who believe in the posive potenal of young people. All our programmes and iniaves are delivered within the context of this vibrant and lively community network which is culvated via regular gatherings and reunions. These acvies currently take place in London, Somerset, Devon and Leicestershire.
Youth Programmes
LIFEbeat Residenals
Our main youth residenals are intensive 7/8-day programmes for 50 young beneficiaries, aged between 14-18, supported by 25-30 staff and volunteers. 95% of the young people who aend our camps come from disadvantaged backgrounds, referred to us by a range of partner organisaons. We work with young carers, looked aer children, refugees, and at-risk youth, and our youth communies are as diverse as possible. Supported by a team of facilitators, the young people become part of a community where they reflect on their lives, relaonships and aspiraons in an enjoyable and fulfilling way. The programmes use creave, arts-based acvies such as music, art, dance, games and storytelling, with a constant emphasis on inclusion, interacon and experienal learning.
Peer Mentoring
Young people are selected by applicaon to join our peer mentor programmes to develop leadership skills and personal and professional confidence. Parcipants are supported and mentored to learn LIFEbeat facilitaon techniques, creave pracces to use in professional contexts, and interpersonal work to gain self-reflecon tools and techniques. The programme was launched in 2015.
Youth Leadership
LIFEbeat aims to empower the voices of young people. Youth leadership programmes aim to facilitate them to take acon on the issues they care about to contribute to social change.

School Arts Programmes
LIFEbeat trains and works with arsts and creaves to deliver School Arts Programmes across the key stages, using the arts and creavity to promote wellbeing and community.
Creave Projects and Films
LIFEbeat oen produces films to empower the voices of young people on issues they care about. Their voices and perspecves are always at the heart of our work.
Youth Evaluaon
We use our general LIFEbeat evaluaon survey at the end of each programme. Our evaluaon approach includes gathering both qualitave and quantave data, and links to our four key indicators of Self-esteem, Social skills, Emoonal literacy and Resilience. For all our residenal and long-term programmes, we also assess parcipants’ wellbeing levels using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) at the beginning and end of each programme.
Trainings
LIFEbeat Creave Pracce Trainings
We offer adult trainings naonally for youth workers, arsts, counsellors and volunteers which provides a toolbox of skills to engage young people in creave and effecve ways. The trainings are open to our partners and adults of all ages and professional backgrounds. The LIFEbeat Creave Pracce is also a central element of our adult volunteering experience.
LIFEbeat Schools Trainings
LIFEbeat now delivers school trainings centred around embedding the arts and creavity to facilitate mental health and social and emoonal learning for pupils in primary and secondary schools. We also deliver teacher training modules designed to bring Creave Pracce and facilitaon skills into the classroom.
LIFEbeat Creave Mental Health and Wellbeing trainings
LIFEbeat delivers creave trainings to upskill teachers to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of both staff and pupils. These are offered for Heads, SLT, Governors, teachers, school nurses and mental health leads. Our approach focuses on building schools as places of “belonging” and using creave group processes to build self-esteem, social skills, emoonal literacy and resilience.
Our trainings provide an overview of a whole-school approach which places staff wellbeing and resilience at the heart of the school culture. These trainings provide a LIFEbeat model which brings together different strands of the curriculum, including mental and physical health, relaonships and sex educaon and wellbeing. Our trainings provide schools with the skills and strategic vision to become inclusive, compassionate communies where diversity is embraced and celebrated.
Volunteers’ contribuons
We provide full training and mentoring to those wishing to volunteer for our programmes. On average 57% of camp staff are volunteers - they aend the pre-camp staff training weekend and are mentored throughout the programme. Most volunteers hear about LIFEbeat as part of a youth referral organisaon or via our Creave Pracce training.
We have provided 68,124 volunteering hours at camps since 2008, and up to 95,339 volunteering hours across all our youth provisions. We wish to thank everyone who has volunteered for their invaluable support and the energy and ideas that they bring to the organisaon.

Wellbeing & evaluaon outcomes:
Parcipants completed the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) pre-programme to assess their baseline levels of wellbeing and again on the last day of the camp to measure distance travelled, together with our general LIFEbeat evaluaon survey. The WEMWBS assessment tool gives a total score across fourteen different areas of emoonal wellbeing. With few excepons, we have seen a general increase in parcipants agreeing with these statements ‘all of the me’ and ‘oen’, as well as a decrease in the values at the lower end of the scale (‘rarely’ and ‘none of the me’). The guidance for WEMWBS analysis suggests that a change in score of 3 or greater for an individual should be considered ‘significant’. On average there was a 10 point increase over the period measured, with mean scores going from an average of 46 at the beginning of camp to 56 on the final day.

B) Non-residenal Youth Programmes
Throughout the year, we deliver a range of non-residenal programmes to further develop personal and leadership skills and offer the young people and adults in our community a chance to reconnect. This year we have also:
-
Delivered a new LIFEbeat School Arts & Wellbeing Programme with Somerset schools
-
Worked in collaboraon with recruitment agency Invesgo to offer 1 to 1 career mentoring sessions to alumni, extending the range and scope of our offer
LIFEbeat School Arts & Wellbeing Programme (New Programme)
LIFEbeat is engaged in a mission to put the heart back into educaon, to create inclusive, engaged happy school communies and to opmise outcomes and opportunies for all students. Improved mental health and wellbeing contribute to improved educaonal engagement and achievement. Based on previous work in Somerset schools, in the 2021/22 academic year we were commissioned by Somerset County Council to deliver a LIFEbeat School Arts programme. The aim of this programme was to embed a whole-school approach to wellbeing, using creavity and arts to empower the voices and self-expression of children and young people. We partnered with 14 schools across Mendip and South Somerset to deliver the Somerset School Arts Project, across all key stages and trained a network of local arsts and creave praconers in the LIFEbeat creave wellbeing approach. Linked to the Somerset Wellbeing Framework, the project also supported schools in seng up their own student wellbeing acon groups to embed the three wellbeing pillars; friendships & relaonships, community & belonging, self-care & healthy lifestyles.
In total, we worked with over 1,230 children and young people in parcipang schools, all of whom have been idenfied as struggling with wellbeing and school engagement. Recruing a team of 23 Creave Facilitators (including writers, poets, musicians, theatre praconers, and craspeople), schools were offered programmes where children of all 3 key stages were given the opportunity to parcipate in a series of creave workshops. In addion, over 17 teachers were trained in a whole school approach to wellbeing and in LIFEbeat creave pracce across the schools. We are evaluang this programme with a view to codifying the model and replicang it in new regions.
The project evaluaon included feedback from students, facilitators and teachers; below are some key outcomes of the project across all parcipang schools:
-
Parcipang schools gave a rang of 4 out of 5 on average when asked if the project had given them
-
new ideas on how to beer embed creavity and wellbeing themes into their school culture.
-
13 out of 14 schools signed up for the Somerset wellbeing Framework, and 10 out of 14 set up their own Student Wellbeing Acon group.
-
Students had the opportunity to engage in creave acvies they may never have tried before.
-
Students were given the opportunity, space and support to think about how they feel in themselves, their friendships and relaonships and their community. This in turn allowed a space for them to express how the pandemic and the aermath of the pandemic has affected them.
-
Students worked together in mixed age groups, forming new friendships and memories of a shared creave experience.

30 children from Years 5-8 took part in a music and movement workshop based around the school wellbeing acronym STOP NOW!
S= sleep T= technology O= oxygen P= people N= nutrion
O= outside W= water
19 Students became musicians for the two days, wring lyrics around the theme of ‘STOP NOW!’ and creang music to accompany their lyrics. A piece of music with lyrics was developed for each of the leers. 11 students worked on choreographing 7 different movement pieces, one for each of the theme leers.
A film was made as a visual representaon of the school acronym which will be used in all areas of school life to remind students and families how to keep well and happy.
Youth Leadership
We give our Youth Leaders the skills and training they need to express themselves on issues affecng young people, create films and resources, become ambassadors for LIFEbeat’s work and bring our creave methodology directly into other sengs. This year we held 2 Youth Leaders days (in Somerset and London) and priorised preparaon for our Peer Mentors ahead of the summer programmes.
The Youth Leaders days allowed young people to reconnect with the community and to begin the process of planning the youth led elements for summer camps. Young people came together to discuss themes including mental health, wellbeing, belonging, diversity, community, sustainability and educaon. They explored the changes that they would like to see and the opportunies to take acon in their communies. The Peer Mentor training day in July trained our 19 - 20 year old alumni to deliver peer-led sessions during our 8-day intensive summer camp programmes. We focused on how to use LIFEbeat’s signature creave techniques to hold group sessions and build community, and how to structure workshops to engage young people, with a discussion about the challenges of peer mentoring and how to overcome them. We also upskilled them in their ability to mentor and support other youth parcipants.
LIFEbeat Community Building: Open Mics, Reunions and Gatherings
LIFEbeat holds regular online and face-to-face gatherings and reunions to nurture a sense of community and belonging over me alongside parcipatory programmes. In 2022, we held a late Reunion in Feburary for Somerset Young People who parcipated in the October 2021 Camp, as well as two End of Year Reunions in December for all Camp parcipants 2022 in Kilve and London. These events reunited Summer Camp parcipants with fun and creavity including workshops, games and open mics.

LIFEbeat/Invesgo Partnership
This year we have been working in partnership with leading recruitment specialist Invesgo. Invesgo chose us as their Charity of the Year for 2022, providing huge support through fundraising and a new Mentoring programme launched in partnership for our Camp alumni. We also welcomed one of their employees to our Embercombe Camp as a staff volunteer in the summer, who is now keen to connue volunteering.
Fundraising for LIFEbeat
Invesgo employees raised funds for LIFEbeat through mulple streams and events throughout the year. This included, amongst other things: GiveAll payroll giving; company social events; challenges such as a tough mudder, the Big Invesgo Cycle to Amsterdam and the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, and their Big Invesgo Quiz on the run-up to Christmas. Overall, Invesgo raised a total of £66,512.66 for LIFEbeat.
Invesgo & LIFEbeat Mentoring Programme
A key element of Invesgo charity partnerships is to allow their employees to get directly involved with the work of the charity they are supporng. As part of our partnership, we launched a very excing careers mentorship programme, piloted in the spring and replicated in the autumn. A total of 31 Young People parcipated in the mentoring programme during 2022 .
Young people from across the country were paired with Invesgo staff and each young person received three one-hour mentoring sessions to work on their career priories. A Core Team staff member was also present at each session to support the Invesgo mentor and comply with our Safeguarding Policy. To close the mentoring experience and celebrate their parcipaon, mentees were invited to aend a final day at the Invesgo offices in London, where they could reconnect with other young people from Camp, meet their mentor in person and experience the working environment first-hand.
“I really think this is the start of something quite special and our hope is to connue this as an annual volunteering partnership between LIFEbeat and Invesgo.” Lisa Holberton, Head of Markeng at Invesgo
The second stage of the mentoring programme launched in September 2022 and the group visited the Invesgo office during the 2023 February half-term. The programme feedback shows a posive impact not only on the mentees, but also on parcipang Invesgo mentors. We are very excited to connue offering this Mentoring scheme on an annual basis in partnership with Invesgo for summer camp youth alumni in the autumn aer Camp parcipaon.
“I gained a new sense of confidence knowing that the informaon I gave my mentee helped her towards her 1st interview and job offer. Very proud of what she has accomplished!” Invesgo Mentor
“I loved geng to know my mentor and learning how much we have in common. Brilliant, supporve, 10/10 mentor.” LIFEbeat Mentee
C) Trainings:
Somerset Schools’ Trainings
Building on the last 3 years of training for Public Health, Somerset County Council, we connued to be the main training provider for Somerset schools over this funding period. We trained 48 teachers from 33 schools via our Mental Health and Wellbeing Curriculum trainings and tailored creave Wellbeing workshops. Parcipants have rated the sessions with a 4.6 out of 5 on average.
We connued to focus on upskilling teachers and school leaders in a creave approach to developing and delivering Mental Health and Wellbeing curriculum and how to embed a whole school creave approach to wellbeing. We held two 3-day programmes in 2022, one in the spring and one in the autumn. Over the course parcipants gained a toolbox of pracces and strategies to help their pupils nurture posive mental health, self-esteem, resilience and promote a healthy lifestyle. They also learned creave ways of delivering their curriculum to enliven learning and promote an experience of belonging, connecon and wellbeing.
