STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Baildon Methodist Church is established as a trust, under the Methodist Church Act 1976 and is governed by the Church Council in line with its Governing Document, ‘The Constitutional Practice and Discipline of the Methodist Church’ Trustees are appointed by the Church Council and by church members at the Annual General meeting

The Church Council (comprising the Chairman and trustees) meets three times a year with additional ad hoc meetings as required, to consider matters of governance, current operational and financial positions and strategic planning. Proceedings of the Church Council and all related groups are publicised to all church members and an Annual General Meeting (AGM) is normally held to which a report is made on church affairs. The AGM for 2022 took place at a later than normal date 16.10.22 and the one for 2023 took place on the 21.5.23. Church Council meetings continued to occur on church premises throughout the past year.

The church is part of the Bradford North Methodist Circuit and, through the Yorkshire West District, is accountable to the Methodist Conference. Churches within the circuit were served during 22-23 by a team of Three full-time presbyters, one being superintendent, and a half-time deacon.

Three voluntary lay pastors, local preachers, trustees and volunteers played major roles in the organisation and running of Baildon Methodist Church. The Church Council discussed risks applying to the church, took professional advice as required, regularly reviewed progress and adopted a Safeguarding Policy which will be reviewed annually.

The Baildon Leadership Team (trustees representing different aspects of church life together with the link minister) provided invaluable service to church members in the organisation and running of the church, the church centre (named Wesley's) and in the consideration of any issues arising, before being referred to the church Council for decision making

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this Methodist Church (as set out in the Methodist Church Act 1976 and the Methodist Church’s statement ‘Our Calling’ in 2000) is the advancement of the Christian faith and any charitable purpose of the Methodist Church or church organisation and to respond to the gospel of God’s love through worship and prayer, learning and caring, service and evangelism. Baildon Methodist Church aims to increase awareness of God’s presence, make more followers of Jesus Christ, help people through prayer, mutual support and care, be a good neighbour to those in need and challenge injustice where appropriate. Community outreach is a major objective.

The trustees of Baildon Methodist Church have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit and take this into account when planning and considering their objectives and activities.

ACTIVITIES

The church continued to grow as a beacon of community cohesion and Christian worship within the town.

Wesley's café continued to be as popular as ever as a meeting point within the community.

The activities of Baildon Methodist Church can be divided into three sections; Worship, Community outreach, Wesley's café. There is of course overlap within all three groups. Summaries of all three will be provided in the next section Achievements and Performance.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

¢ Following the meeting in January 2022, the process for the Church and minister to host and perform same sex marriage services continued.

¢ Baildon Town Council provided £10,000 per year for 3 years to enable the community liaison and lettings officer at the church to continue in her vital work. They also supported the purchasing of new equipment and running costs to enable the café to get up and running again following lock downs which occurred due to the covid pandemic. The new coffee machine is proved particularly popular!
¢ The Hallmaster room booking system became well established as the way for all using the buildings for activities to book rooms.
° New chairs were purchased for the Church thanks to the provision of £1000 from Baildon Ward Councillors via their Covid Recovery Fund.
- Throughout the year a wide range of groups continued to use the church premises including; o Youth club — young people met every fortnight and whilst not all attend worship in the church they are encouraged to think about social responsibility and issues such as climate change. o See and know —a busy, structured playgroup for parents and toddlers. o Baildon Village Preschool — used the bespoke lower fold building for their purposes.
Uniformed organisations which included Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Beavers.
Table tennis
o Sew Together — members met to sew blankets and enjoy companionship. 15 blankets were provided for asylum seekers and 14 sent to Ethiopia for the Hamlin fistula patients.
o Worth Connecting —a six-week programme helping to raise awareness and skills surrounding IT matters.
Line dancing o Two Choir groups o Two dance groups o Adult Ballet Class o Seated dance group o Two walking groups o Pilates group o Gardening group o Karate group o Ukelele Group o Alcoholics Anonymous
oO. Mantalk —this has members from outside the church and meets to discuss politics, religion, newspaper articles. They have sent letters to the local MP, provided duvets to the homeless and provided mutual pastoral work.
Prayer Group o Church Cell Group
Social group — this began in the pandemic and provides company for those who are isolated and may have been recently bereaved. Good friendships have been made amongst the 20 or so attendees.
o Two weight loss group o Home Farm Trust — supports adults with learning difficulties to live the best life possible.
Counselling provision
o Ukrainian Support group — refugees and host families meet weekly. Visits to these sessions have recently included a local police officer and a social housing provider. They have offered a welcome from their organisation along with practical advice to those meeting. In the Autumn of 2022, a collection of winter clothing took place at the Church for people from the Ukraine. The response was so abundant that a further 2 cars, full of clothing was taken to the Immanuel Project in Bradford which supports homeless people. Some of our Ukrainian friends of the Church received an appeal from Kharkiv hospital for any sort of cotton fabric that could be used as bandages and dressings Donations were collected in Wesleys over the period of a week. Another Ukrainian friend hosted by a local family gained a place to study journalism at Leeds City College from September 23. An appeal for a laptop for her use was made via Church communications.
The volunteers of “Wellbeing at Wesleys”, (which is part of the national “Renew Wellbeing” movement), provided two sessions per week at Wesleys for people experiencing anxiety and isolation. Mindful activities included drawing, glass-painting, games, jig-saws, and the chance just to be quiet.

oHome Farm Trust — provided care and activities for people with learning disabilities from Mondy to Friday each week in the Upper Fold. During the year, the name of the organisation was changed to “Unique Voices”
° There are thirteen rooms that can be hired out for ad hoc activities. These include a fully professionally equipped kitchen and the new Den area which has relaxed seating for a more informal setting, it also provides extra space for Wesley’s Café and Stay and Play.
The 2021 Worship review plans continued to be put into action with more explanations given throughout services regarding aspects of worship, use of new online resources, baby and toddler group throughout the Sunday service at the back of church and regular all age services. The junior church format of Stay and Play continued to be a huge success with over twenty families visiting. Many were new to the church, attending on a Sunday morning for a drop in craft and play session with a theme each week that reflected a bible story. Light refreshments were made available, and the families were invited to join the main congregation at the end of the service when the children showed what they had made and tell the adults about the story they heard. The families were invited to stay for coffee after the service.
° A member of the church has led over seventy people on tours of the Fold building. This is the first church building in Britain to be built to standards like those ofa Passivhaus. There has been wide community interest in this building, reflected by the numbers attending the tours and the hiring out of it.
° There were approximately 140 church members and around 20 non-members on the Pastoral list during the 22-23 year. Exact figures are difficult to specify for obvious reasons i.e. death of members/new members.
- Over 400 people are classed as Friends of Baildon Methodist Church. These people receive regular communications updating them with information about the church and its activities.
¢ A well-attended praise service took place once a month on a Sunday afternoon.
¢ There were a series of Sunday morning services with the theme being based on the Fruits of the Spirit. This was very well received once again, building on the Jesus-Shaped people programme from previous years. The content dovetailed well with activities in Stay and Play.
£5,773 was raised for different causes throughout the past year, mostly via the monthly appeal in church, Give for Others (GiFO). This included a wide variety of national and international charities such as: Mercy Ships, All we can, Action for Children, Phakamisa, Sense, Rainforest Trust, Turkey earthquake appeal, Water Aid, Christian Aid, Christians against Poverty, and MSF, as well as local charities: Inn Churches, Bradford Soup run.
- In Wesleys Cafe, Art in the café hosts art pieces by a variety of local artists and is changed each month. * One of our Church families held an open garden in June 23. Proceeds went to Dementia UK.
In October 2022 the annual Macmillan coffee morning was held and once again was well supported with a sizeable amount raised for the cause.
- In November 2022, a Community Pantry was launched on our premises to assist members of the community in obtaining nonperishable food and essential household items. Members of the Church and visitors to Wesleys donated items and maintained the pantry which was accessible in the porch of Wesleys.
¢ There was a Traidcraft stall held after the service once a month. * Pastoral care took place regularly to those who can no longer attend church andnot just by the lay pastors and ministers but also by other members of the Church family, and pastoral visitors.
Astall to encourage recycling under the title “Refill’ was held twice a week helping to lessen packaging waste amongst the community.
¢ In late November 2022, the annual toy service was held. Good quality gifts were donated to a local community centre where parents experiencing financial hardship can ‘buy’ presents through a free voucher scheme.

° A self-care for diabetes event was held where information and advice given out on the day to help people live well with diabetes.
¢ |nnovative ways of worship continue to be explored e.g. attenders were encouraged to bring knitting/crochet/other craft to do during the service, with this interlinking with the theme of worship.
° Information was circulated through Church communications of a link which could help with the cost of living crisis for those living in the district - ‘Cost ofLiving Bradford - Helping Bradford District residents get through the Cost ofLiving Crisis.’
During the Winter of 2022/23 the Church was designated an official Warm Space and free soup and a roll made available to those who needed this provision enabled in a discrete manner.
© The Church took part in a Crowd funding event with the Co-op and the amount raised (£10606.90) helped enormously in helping us to pay our energy bills as the Co-op matched the amount raised in donations to the appeal
¢ The church was open as part of the annual Baildon festival, “Baildon at Christmas.” Food was served in Wesley's, stalls, children’s crafts, and a musical programme were all part of the fun.
° Village voices, one of the three choirs who rehearse at the church held their annual Christmas concert in the building during December.
Another of the choirs that rehearses in the Church performed two concerts at Bingley Arts Centre in November 2022.
|n March 2023 leaders of groups run on the church premises were invited to a lunch. This was a chance to meet other leaders and to thank those who make the wide range of activities available at the church possible. Group leaders were also invited to the church council meetings to provide an update on their group.
In April 2023 the Church hosted an afternoon of Music and Mirth by the Wesley Singers.
- Also, in April young members of the Church held a Spring Stall at Church raising £150 which was split between the Disasters Emergency Committee and Bradford Food Bank
Carol singers from the church went around homes in the village at Christmas time. They raised funds for Action for Children and spreada lot of festive cheer.
One Saturday in December 200 mince pies were handed out to people in Baildon village centre, along with an invitation to them to join the congregation at our Christmas carol celebration.
Traditional Christmas lunches were made available at two dates during December 2022.
- Wesley's café in the past year has provided free meals to parents with children who are struggling with food costs during school holidays.
° During Lent the church participated in Churches together in Baildon Lenten Lunches. A simple lunch was eaten ina different church each week and a topic discussed relating to the season of Lent.
- A Good Friday reflection was held at Easter along with distribution of 200 hot Cross buns to people in the village centre.
Money was raised and has been generously donated to repair the church roof and other internal repairs to the Church building. Plans for this are well underway with a priority to future proof the solar panel installation to enable new technologies to be easily installed in line with the eco congregation stance held by the church. The latter is now complete.

° Adedicated Facebook page was used to tell the community what was happening at church each week. It was also used to ask for volunteers e.g., in Wesley’s café with excellent results. Alerts were also posted providing information about Stay and Play activities.
¢ Throughout the year a teamofflower arrangers provide displays for the church. these were then dismantled and the flowers (which were donated by church members) distributed to members and friends of the church, sometimes for specific reasons, and sometimes just as a lovely surprise.
¢ Church members continued to support two Ghanaian villages; Kaleo and Dunjagu. ° Wesleys Café, continued to flourish. Providing hot meals, drinks, snacks and companionship. * Wellbeing sessions take place every Monday and Wednesday to provide an opportunity to have space to focus on wellbeing. Support is present for those attending and opportunities for signposting to specialist intervention made available.

Enjoyment of the many activities which occur at church was evident along with the comfort and companionship they offer all ages within the community. This statement by one of our members illustrates the vibrant inclusive and positive atmosphere that is experienced by the many who attend events at the Church and Wesleys; “| sing and strum with the Ukelele Group on Thursday evenings in the Aldersgate Room. | would like to share something of the joyful atmosphere at Wesleys on Thursday evenings. In Epworth, the Guides let us know they are having a great time with shrieks of laughter. In the Sanctuary, around 60 people are raising their voices in song with All Together Now Choir. Across the terrace, the Rangers are doing exciting and challenging activities. We all stream out at around 9.00pm with happy faces and friendly greetings. Whilst walking out last Thursday, one of the ukelele players said to me: “this is a marvellous place”. | could only agree.”

The trustees of Baildon Methodist Church are confident that during the year 2022/23 they provided many worship and prayer opportunities. Pastoral care was offered to members and friends of the church along with numerous examples of community outreach being undertaken. We continued to be a thriving, happy, inclusive and diverse group who use our premises for the benefit of all in the community and we continued to try and improve on our already outstanding provision of care to those who use our premises both now and hopefully in the future.

PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS

° To continue to embed the priorities reached by the recent worship review into the life of the church ° To build on the success of the Fruits of the Spirit series with other series based on spiritual themes * Continue to encourage the interaction of younger members of the church with the functions of church life ° To continue to value the efforts of those who help make Baildon Methodist Churcha vital part of Baildon village life providing opportunities for fellowship, socialising, learning new skills and community outreach
e Continue to communicate with friends of the church using the mechanisms above and new ones that may be identified. Providing pastoral care to all worshippers whether members of the church or not
e To continue to campaign for environmental awareness and action * Maintain a vigilant approach to our energy usage and invest in large scale solar panel installations to help offset the increasing energy costs.
° To progress the replacement of the church roof
° To build on the establishment of the "Wellness at Wesleys” twice weekly meeting for people who are isolated, anxious or in need to individual support.
¢ To continue to support those affected by the Cost of Living Crisis.

Statement of Trustees’ accounting and reporting responsibilities

The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the Trustees are required to:

e Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
e Observe the methods and principals in the Charities SORP;
e Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
e State whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and
e Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable then tom ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The Trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the charity and financial information included on the charity’s website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.

This report is made solely to the Charity’s Trustees, s a body, in accordance with Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011. My independent examination work has been undertaken so that | might state to the Charity’s Trustees those matters | an required to state to them in an Independent Examiner’s Report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, | do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Charity and the Charity’s Trustees as a body, for my independent examination work, for this report, or for the opinions | have formed.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

2. Critical accounting estimates and judgements

In the application of the Church's accounting policies, the Trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised, if the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods if the revision affects both current and future periods.

The Methodist Chapel Aid loan, which is secured by legal charge over Baildon Methodist Church, is repayable over 15 year. Interest is charged at 2.9% per annum.

The loan, which is not secured, is repayable over 12 years by way of capital and interest payments. Interest is charged at 1.8% per annum.
