Chairperson’s Report

it has been an eventful year for the 1 Mountsorrel Scout Group, with several developments to highlight.

Firstly, many thanks to those parents who have joined the Group Executive since last yea r’s AGM, it has been great to have fresh input and ideas in the executive and it helps to spread the load across the volunteers. Unfortunately our chairperson, lan Maddison, had to step down mid-year due to an increase in work commitments, | have filled the dual role of chairperson and secretary in the interim but we will elect a new chair this AGM. Thank you to lan for his work on the Executive over the past few years. We are always looking for further executive members, please speak to me if you are willing to get involved, the commitment is around 6 meetings per year with some potential further voluntary activities.

The group took part in the Mountsorrel Revival in August of last year as part of our fundraising drive. | would particularly like to thank the Leaders and Exec members who helped at the main parking lot for several hours in the hot sun. Also thanks to the leaders, Exec members and scouts who staffed a number of stall on the green, including the tin can alley and play your cards right. We raised several hundred pounds from the day as well as increasing our visibility in the community; we hope to get involved again this year.

One of the reasons we have increased out fundraising activities has been the new roof on the Scout Hut; this had to be replaced after the previous asbestos roof began to leak. Unfortunately the new roof, whilst weather-tight and looking very smart, had particularly poor acoustic qualities inside the hall, which required us to commission a new suspended ceiling to absorb noise. This work has now been completed with great improvement to the acoustics and thus a better experience for leaders, group members and also our paying tenants. We are now raising funds for further improvements required in the kitchen and bathrooms of the hut, we hope that you will be able to support this through the upcoming games night as well as future fundraising activities.

Finally we are pleased to have added a Squirrel Dray to the Group, which is off to a great start under Caroline’s leadership and is already being looked upon as an exemplar for other groups in the County.

On behalf of the executive and the parents of 1 Mountsorrel, I'd like to say a huge thank you to the leaders and other volunteers who keep the Group running and offer wonderful activities to our young members. |’d particularly like to thank Allie Harris, who has recently stood down as Beaver leader after several years, including over the Covid lockdowns where she worked hard to keep activities running online on a regular basis. If any parents are willing to get involved with one of the sections please speak to the Group Scout Leader, Peter Wood, who can give you more information about what is involved.

Thanks for your support and we look forward to another successful year of scouting.

Group Scout Leaders Report 2023

Welcome to our group AGM. This document contains the reports from our Chairperson & the different sections within the group. Firstly, | would like to welcome Caroline & her team, who have created a small but vibrant Squirrel Dray within the group. Their entertaining reports on the group Facebook page show just what a young person is capable of.

With the unfortunate loss of Allie Harris our Beaver leader at the Easter break, | have had to step in at short notice & try to remember how it all worked. The Beavers have been working hard towards their Teamwork & Navigation badges. & | would like to thank Steven and the young leaders Oscar & Josh for the support & insights they have given me. The Cubs have had a busy year with adventures out & about, Whilst the Scout have been busy creating stop-motion animations among other projects. The groups main commitment over the past 12 months has been the upgrading of our premises, this continues to be an ongoing project with the Kitchen & Toilets next on the list, Details of which are covered in the following reports. At the end of this term, Beavers having already lost their leader, will be losing both Oscar & Josh to GCSE year & | wish them good luck. Also due to work commitments the Cubs may see less of Dan Bowler. All of whom have been valuable members of the Cubs team for many years. All of this means that we need new volunteers to step up, if we are to keep a varied & vibrant group continuing. All helpers & leaders do so voluntary and without all their hard work none of this would be possible, without them the group simply would not exist. So if you can spare an hour a week & would like to help, either directly with the young people or on the committee. Please talk to any of the leaders or committee members, either at the AGM or any meeting night.

Squirrels Wednesday 5pmto5:45pm
Beavers Wednesday 6pmto7pm
Cubs Wednesday 7:15pm to8:30pm
Scouts Thursday 7:15pmto8:45pm
Yours in Scouting
