year ended 31 Au8USt 2023.

The Trust wntinues to refresh its membership. During the year the chairnian of the Board. Squire
Gervlld de Lisl¢, announced his inteniion to stand down after almost 20 years of service. After
consuliations in the autumn of 2024. il w&$ decided to invite Gordon Arthur, an existing Trustee, to
suc¢e¢d him. He agreed to tske on the role.
A new candidate to join the Trustees was Dr David Wykes. Ihe fornier Director of Dr William's
Library in London, who has many hisiorical publications to his credit. Ills nationwide links wtth other
historians of nonconfomiity will be of ben¢fil to th¢ TrusL and he also lives in Leicesler and has many
connections with lo￿1 heritage ￿jieS.

Leicestershire Victoria County Hisiory Trnst is a company limited by guarnntee and was incorporai¢d
on 28 Augusl 2008, company number 6683052. It was r¢gist¢red as a charity on 16 March 2009.

the Direclors on I l February 21￿.
The Directors and Trusl¢¢s Jre appointed in accordance with ihe Articles of Association. Athlitional
Directors may be ap￿inted by ordinary res01￿10n of the trt)ard.
The board of Directors and Trustees has ultimate le8al ￿sponSibl11ty for our organisation and works
to ensur¢ 80(Ml governance, with ihe help of its committees. The board agrees the overnll strategic
direction and is our highest decision-making body. Its members are volunteers. They work along5id¢
the executive committ¢¢, who are reswnsible for the implemenlalion of wlicy and for the
management of the day-l04ay running of the organisation.
The board is committed to ensurin8 that governance arrangements arc eff￿live and relevanL as well
as ensuring that lh¢ board members refleci the breadth of the services we provide. The board are also
responsible for safeguarding the a55eis Qlthe charity and hence for taking reasonable steps to pr¢v¢nl
and detect fr8ud and other irregularilies. The board's responsibilitie5 also extend to the ongoing
integrity of the financial statements.
Objects
The objects of Leiceslershire Victoria County History Trust are:
To further the educaiion of the public in the history of the county of tkicest¢rshire and its
communities and to promote and foster public knowledge, und¢rstsndin8 and appreciation of
the history of the ar￿ in general.
To commission, facilitate and promote research into the history of the county of
Leicestershire and its communilies and to disseminate the useful results of such resewch for
the public t*n¢fit.

Public Benefit
In exercising their ￿)WerS and duties. the Directors and Trustees have complied with their duty in
seciion 4 of ihe Charities Act 2006 to have due r¢8ard to the 8uidance on public benefit published by
the Charity Commission.
Lei¢es*rshire Vi¢loria County History Trust aims to PTovide (when fund5 allow) a volunteer
programme which is open to anyone in t£icestershire with an interest in the ￿llnty'S history. It
provides free training in historical research method5, including skills thai ih¢ volunt¢ers will be able
to use in employment or in other voluntary aaivilies. Sections are being published online &8 r¢%ar¢h
is ¢ompl¢ted and are published within books to provide local people and the public more generally
with a definitive and accurate history of th¢ tom￿5 and villages within the county. The Trust works
with schools when funds perniiL to provide educational packs that meet the need5 of l(K81 teachers
and the curriculum. and to enthuse and inforni pupils alM)Ut the history of their c4)mmunities.
A¢¢ivitie4 Research and Publicado
A book on Ibslocl after a delay ￿USed by Covi4 was launched with much local cnthusia5m in the
autumn of 2023.
Our r¢S¢￿h into Loughlx)rough's hisw has continued. and with the help of ik grants mentioned in
th¢ nexl s¢ction we have been able to increase the pace. Excellent progress was mad¢ towards our first
ot'two Loughborough paperbacks, a social and cultural history of the town since 1750. The sections
on religious life and on the town's educational providers were c(Mnpleted. and substsntial progress
was made on other social history topic& including iA)ughborough's two workhouses and the town's
sports grounds and teams. We also iK8an to publicis¢ som¢ of iyur findings online through websites
provided by others as we aim to reach the widest wissible audience. Leic¢st¢rshire Archaeological and
Historical Society published a blogpo￿ wrillen by Dr Pamela Fisher on 'iKgU8hborough's First

Durin8 2024 the centrnl otTiee of the VCH Indi￿led that counlies should make their own publishing
arrangements. Ihough with continued quality assurance from the London stsff. The L¢ittslershir¢
VCH Trnst has made 8 provisional arrangement with a reputable publisher for future volumes.
Work is also und¢rway on our second L4)ughb)rough pAperback. which will fwus on iA)ughborough'$
farnis and industries since 1750. Meanwhile, Dr Andrew Watkins has continued to make progress on
the rural history of the parish in Ihe m¢dieval ￿riod. looking at the demesne (manorial) fami and the
lives of the pea5ani famiers. Volunteers ar¢ also continuing to transcribe probate records from the
¢arly modern period.
Once again. we attendd IM)th m¢¢tings of the LA)ughborough Heritage Forum, in October 2023 and
April 2024. Convened by LA)ughborough Studie5 Library volunieer& sponsored by
Loughborough Building Society and supEM)rted by Charnw(K>d Borough Council. all organi￿tiOnS and
individuals with an interest in researching and promoting the history and h¢rits8¢ of the town attend
these meetings to share inforniation alxTrui their aclivities. We are finding thes¢ meetings very useful
for h¢arin8 about other projecty making contacts Sup￿rtIng th¢ work of others and publicising our
ovm work.
We have taken severnl op￿rtunItieS to Sha￿ our res¢aTch with the public by delivering talks and
attending events arrdnged by others. We joined other h¢rÉtag¢ organisations from LEice5tershire and
across the East Midlartds counties at the second Heritsge Hub event organi5ed by the University of
Leicester, wher¢ we wcr¢ able ￿ diKuss our r¢s¢a￿h with members of the public.

We were delighted to be invited to deliver a brief thlk for the Friends of the Centre for Regional and
Local History at the University of tKicester as part of their annual Hoskins Day. Inlerest in l(Kal
history ¢ontinues to be Strong across the country. and 50 members of Cosby Herilage Society attended
a talk we w¢re &sked to give on the htstory of Lutterworth. where we also sold some of our published
history of this town. We were also made very welcome when we reiumed to Castle Donington as part
of th¢ national Festival of Archaeolo￿. where Dr Pamela Fisher led a iour of th¢ ¢hur¢h and talked
about its interesting history and its three Fyomineni monuments in stone, brass alab￿*T.
Sin¢¢ ihe yw end, we have started a new volunteer project on the history of Nonpantan, whi¢h will
feed inlo our Loughknrough pa￿rbaCkS. Over 20 volunteers are meeting ai Home Farni in Nanpantan
to help with this research. We are v¢ry grat¢ful to Charnwood Fore￿ Geopark and the Heritage Fund
for their financial supprt for this work.
Fund rnising aDd futurt prospects
Not all the TrU￿'s applicaiions and negotiations for funding are successful. but during the year the
fund5 conthined in the Bequesl which featured in last y¢ar's rewrt at last became available io spend.
We were also successful in an application for £51100 to lh¢ Aurelius Charithble Trust. and a further
s¢parate grant of £500 was made by the Aurelius Trnst. Eveniually an earlier Application for £5000 to
the L¢ic¢stershire Archaeological and Historical Sc*iety was approved. The VCH Trust maintsins its
relationship with this s￿iety. Trusttts have also been in discussion with the National Forest which is
taking initiatives in developing the heriiage of nonh-wesi Leic¢*ershirc. Th¢ T￿￿1 continues to
receive a 51e8dy revenue ￿reaM from its Friends and 200 Club.
FinAnei*l Revltw
The financial position of t*icestrrshire VI￿Or1& County History Trust is set out in thc finan¢i41
slalements on pa8¢s 9 to 12. These show iothl incoming resources of £33.260 and cxp¢nditurc of
£24.884 resulting in a net surplus for the year of £8,376.
The financial position is sound. Totsl nel assels al 31 Au8USt 2024 w¢r¢ £25.264, which included £9,826
of r¢stricied funds. A balance of £23.945 was held in the Trusl's bank accounts.
The Directors and Trustees consider the financial ￿SitIOn of the charity to be satisfactory. The
aclivilies of the charity are carefully tailored io match available resOu￿e5. Budgets are drnwn up and
monitored ¢los¢ly and costs kept to 8 minimum ihrough many hours of donaled time 8iv¢n freely by
several highly skill¢d people. The Directors and Tru51ees aim to ensure Ihot the Trust's reserve5 do
noi fall below six months. anticipated expenditure and believe th81 ihis policy is appropriate and will
b¢ m¢1 throughout the next year to 31° August 2025, when it will be r¢vi¢w¢d again.
Responsibilities ill rel*tlott to the IIDaD¢ial Ststements
The Directors and Trust¢¢s are resFKynsible for preparing the annual ￿port and the financial
statements in accordance with Chariti¢s Act and Companies Act requirements.
For the year ending 31 st August 2024. the company was entiiled ￿ exemption from audit und¢r
s¢¢tion 477 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small compani¢s.
Dir¢¢tors' r¢sponsibilities'.
The memkrs have not required the company to obtain an audit of its accounts for the year in
question in ac¢ordan¢e with section 476,
The Directors acknowledge their reswnsibilities for complying with the requir¢m¢nts of the
Act with respect to accounting records and the preparntion of accounts.
These accounts have been prepared in accor￿ with the special provisions applicable to companies
subject to the small companies, regim¢.

in accordance with the requirements for charitable companies under lh¢ Companies Act 2006, the
Charities Act 2011, the Statement of Recommended Practice FRS 102 'A¢¢ounting by Charities, and
UK Generally Accepled Practice.
