Guisborough Methodist Church (including Hinton Court)
- ANNUAL REPORT 2022 2023
Guisborough Methodist Church is part of the Cleveland and Danby Circuit, which includes thirteen Churches/Fellowships. The Circuit lies within the Darlington District of the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
Mission Statement
Our mission statement continues to be focused on the initial letters of G uisborough M ethodist C hurch, namely.
G rowing in God
M oving in the Spirit
C entred on Christ
This statement is designed to encourage spiritual growth as Christians, and our mission to serve the community in which we are placed. This mission is now incorporated into our Church Logo, publicity material.
The Nature of the Local Church - Standing Order 600
'The Church exists to exercise the whole ministry of Christ. The local Church, with its membership and larger Church community, exercises this ministry where it is and shares in the wider ministry of the Church in the world. In this one ministry worship, fellowship, pastoral care, mission and service are essential elements. Administration and training enable their fulfilment. In the Methodist Church these various tasks are undertaken by the local Church, through its Church Council and committees, in union with the ministry of the Circuit of which it is a constituent. It is represented in the Circuit Meeting and represents it locally. It engages in ecumenical work including, where appropriate, the support of ecumenical housing associations.'
The Church Council is constituted to unite those who hold responsibility in the Church in one working community. It has the authority, as trustees, to take decisions for the Church and to manage its affairs to this end. It has the authority and oversight over the whole area of the ministry of the Church, including the management of its property.
The senior leadership team of the church, including the minister, and appointed Church Stewards, meets regularly to both deal with the day-to-day running of Guisborough Methodist Church, and look at the strategic and spiritual leadership issues that arise, namely,
1
-
To uphold and act upon the decisions and policies of the Church Council, including furthering the mission of the church and its ‘fruitfulness’.
-
To influence and empower church members engaging in the full range of the church’s life and activity.
Vision / Directon
The vision of the church is that “Guisborough Methodist Church is a place where all people can discover a relationship with God through Christ; a place where they can discover their gifts and calling and then are empowered by the Spirit (and our Church) to fulfil that calling in offering God’s love to each other and the world”.
We want GMC to be a safe place where people can come and receive a welcome knowing that they are valued and loved by God and the church family.
It is a justice-seeking church that strives to be inclusive. For example, the church council voted to allow same sex marriages to take place at GMC, our minister Rev Kevin Highfield is registered to undertake such marriages and this is one example of the church reaching out to be more inclusive whilst at the same time adhering to our Christian faith and principles of love the Lord you God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbour as you love yourself.
Church Life during 2022/23
2022 through to 2023 has been a very busy and active period in the life of the church. We have seen the level of activities get back to before COVID levels with weekly Saturday coffee mornings enabling the church to connect with the public on a more informal level and consequently, we have seen an increase in people wanting to be part of the GMC fellowship.
The church is open every day and is a valued and active part of the community of Guisborough.
Groups that meet in the church are:
U3a singing for pleasure, youth groups Gener8 (8-11year olds) and Credo (11/14-year-olds), Guisborough photo group, Community shop (run by the Guisborough Bridge providing free food for those in need), Guisborough Arts Club, Mother and toddler group, Nurture nest (mothers and babies), Paws choice (dog training), Good neighbours (supporting families with transport, shopping etc), Coffee Mornings, Women’s Fellowship, Private parties,
Worship Services take place weekly at 10:30 am on a Sunday, every 2[nd] and 4[th] Sunday is a Cafe style service, there is a weekly prayer meeting and the usual Weddings, Funerals, and baptisms. There are several active house groups providing support to individuals and encouraging spiritual and personal growth. At GMC we continue to provide an online house group for those who are unable to get out to people’s home or who prefer this type of group. Services also take place at Hinton Court which is a Methodist Homes establishment, these services are on the 2[nd] and 4[th] Sundays of the month.
Finance
The church family are looking at new ways to develop the building to make it more usable for the progress and development of the church family and the needs of the community. The church has instructed a surveyor to identify what options and possibilities there are and to advice on a way
2
forward to meet the ever changing and developing need of a changing church family and local community.
Financially the church is thankful to the generosity of its members and adherents and income derived from rentals. GMC has a healthy income however our building is expensive to run, and efforts have been made to reduce costs for example we have changed all our lights to LED and we have a more efficient heating timer. During the winter months we met in the downstairs hall which did contribute to significant savings on our energy use which helped the church finances and reduced the impact on global warming by reducing our use of gas and electricity. This might seem like a small effort, but it all adds up and all helps to reduce our carbon footprint.
More detailed information on the church finances can be seen on the treasurers’ report attached to this document. The church finances, as will be seen from the finance summaries ended the year in a reasonably healthy state.
The Ongoing Mission and Life of Guisborough Methodist Church
Looking forward, the Church leadership continues to look at and support the church family being able to fully join together, to enjoy the worship, singing, teaching and fellowship etc which is so much the part of the Church and Christian life. Pro-actively maintaining the community of the Church’s congregation and friends is a high priority.
Our mission and vision remain that Guisborough Methodist Church will be a place where people can safely discover a relationship with God through Jesus Christ; a place where they can discover their gifts and calling and then are empowered by the Holy Spirit (and our Church) to fulfil that calling in offering God’s love to each other and the world.
The methods, whereby we seek to fulfil this, will undoubtedly change, and develop, with God’s guidance and inspiration through prayer and the active involvement of the Holy Spirit.
