ANNUAL REPORT 2021 - 2022
Guisborough Methodist Church is part of the Cleveland and Danby Circuit, which includes 15 Churches/Fellowships. The Circuit lies within the Darlington District of the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
Mission Statement
Our mission statement continues to be focused on the initial letters of G uisborough M ethodist C hurch, namely:

M oving in the Spirit
C entred on Christ
This is designed to encourage spiritual growth as Christians, and our mission to serve the community in which we are placed. This mission is now incorporated into our Church Logo, publicity material.
The Nature of the Local Church - Standing Order 600
'The Church exists to exercise the whole ministry of Christ. The local Church, with its membership and larger Church community, exercises this ministry where it is and shares in the wider ministry of the Church in the world. In this one ministry worship, fellowship, pastoral care, mission and service are essential elements. Administration and training enable their fulfilment. In the Methodist Church these various tasks are undertaken by the local Church, through its Church Council and committees, in union with the ministry of the Circuit of which it is a constituent. It is represented in the Circuit Meeting and represents it locally. It engages in ecumenical work including, where appropriate, the support of ecumenical housing associations.'
The Church Council is constituted to unite those who hold responsibility in the Church in one working community. It has the authority, as trustees, to take decisions for the Church and to manage its affairs to this end. It has the authority and oversight over the whole area of the ministry of the Church, including the management of its property.
The senior leadership team of the church, including the minister, and appointed Church Stewards, meets regularly to both deal with the day-to-day running of Guisborough Methodist Church, and also look at the strategic and spiritual leadership issues that arise, namely

To uphold and act upon the decisions and policies of the Church Council, including furthering the mission of the church and its ‘fruitfulness’.

To influence and empower church members engaging in the full range of the church’s life and activity.
Vision
The vision of the church is that “Guisborough Methodist Church is a place where people can discover a relationship with God through Christ; a place where they can discover their gifts and calling and then are empowered by the Spirit (and our Church) to fulfil that calling in offering God’s love to each other and the world”.
Church Life during 2021/22
The Church is recovering well from the impact of the COVID pandemic. Services are now taking place face to face on a regular basis, house groups and other church groups are now meeting again.
Some learning from the pandemic is the value of an online ministry for those who are unable to get to churches or house groups. GMC has continued to provide an online house group via Zoom called the Nurture Group and as part of the Cleveland and Danby circuit there continues to be online services to compliment to face to face services.
Other activities like Saturday coffee mornings continue to struggle to get back as they were before the pandemic.
All other groups in the church are running and the church is also open to other voluntary groups to hire and use.
Spiritual and Social Factors
The church has continued to provide the following activities to support its members.

Great use has been made of online facilities, including the Church website (http://www.guisboroughmethodist.online), the Church Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/guismethodist), Zoom meetings, WhatsApp groups.
-
House groups are meeting again including one group that meets on zoom, these groups facilitate people getting together for both social fellowship, prayer and focused Bible teaching.

The pastoral care for the Church family, members and friends has been carefully maintained by the Minister (regular visits and telephone calls), the house groups, members of the Church’s Pastoral committee and individuals caring for, and especially watching over, those that were, and are, vulnerable through age, underlying medical concerns or through personal circumstances, such as living alone.

Church attendance numbers have been significantly lower than those before the pandemic, and now, many months later even though we see new faces we are still not back to pre-pandemic numbers.
Financial Impact
With lower attendances, there was unsurprisingly concern about the ongoing, and future, financial stability of the Church. From a financial point of view, the following negative factors continue from previous years.

Weekly cash offerings are still lower, although bank transfer and envelope giving has stabilised.

We are able to resume fundraising events, coffee mornings only resumed in September 2021 and to date there has been little take up of dates available to outside charities.

Room rentals were also a significant part of regular income, peaking at over £12,000 in the last financial year before the pandemic. Recently these rentals have been improving and continue to attract interest.

On the expenditure side, several of our key expenses continued without change. Our ‘Assessment’, which is the calculated contribution paid to the Cleveland and Danby Circuit, incorporating the costs of our Circuit ministers, manses, Circuit overheads, and contribution to District and Connexion costs of the Methodist Church etc, was paid throughout and will continue to be paid for the current financial year. The church also pays for a part time cleaner.

Other overheads, such as insurance, water, telecoms, continue unaffected. Energy usage, which had been minimal, has been an increasing cost as greater use of the church building was made. Future energy costs will no doubt be higher as the Church cannot shelter under the cap on costs available to domestic users.
However , we feel that God particularly blessed us, and provided for us over this period, and indeed continues to do so in the current financial year. Therefore, the financial stability of the church has not, yet, been threatened.
The key examples of this were:

a. Most of the Church income comes from direct giving by bank standing orders and transfers. This is normally about 75% of our direct giving.
-
b. With the support of HMG, tax rebates on gift-aided giving were received promptly.
-
c. Continued action was taken by the trustees to avoid an unnecessary expenditure where it could be avoided, or at least deferred. Property repairs during the year were minimal, limited to those necessary for Health and Safety and costs associated with technology for live streaming etc.
The church finances, as will be seen from the finance summaries on the first 10 pages of this report, ended the year in a reasonably healthy state.
The Ongoing Mission and Life of Guisborough Methodist Church
Looking forward, the Church leadership continues to explore new ways of doing things, looking for opportunities to enjoy the worship, singing, teaching and fellowship etc which is so much the part of the Church and Christian life that we value.
For the leadership, pro-actively maintaining the community of the Church’s congregation and friends is a high priority.
Our mission and vision remain that Guisborough Methodist Church will be a place where people can discover a relationship with God through Jesus Christ; a place where they can discover their gifts and calling and then are empowered by the Holy Spirit (and our Church) to fulfil that calling in offering God’s love to each other and the world. As we seek to fulfil this vision and mission we will undoubtedly change, and develop, with God’s guidance and inspiration through prayer and the active involvement of the Holy Spirit.

Following the closure of the Lay Worker project and bank account before the end of last year, the accounts were left a reserve of the Gift Aided tax refund (£2,528) from 2019-2020 and a reserve created awaiting a decision of its donor as to how it should be either returned or utilised. The former of these has been utilised and transferred to this years gift aided tax rebate, which was lower as a consequence of the repayments last year from the Lay Worker closure. The issue of the other outstanding reserve was resolved in October 2021, when Methodist Connexion authorised those funds to be used for childrens and youth work at Guisborough Methodist Church, consequently £8,373 was allocated to the restricted reserve for Youth & Childrens Fund
