## **Registered Charity # 1128457** ## **St. Andrews Dock Heritage Park Action Group – STAND Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 28[th] June 2022** ## **At 7.00pm** ## **Chairman’s Report** Thank you and welcome to everyone here tonight at STAND’s Annual General Meeting for 2022. The current Trustees have served from June 2019 to date as a result of the pandemic period. The Committee has been administered by a minimum of six (6) members which were reduced to five (5) when Dennis Chapman stood down due to family commitments. As Chairman I have to thank and congratulate all the members for their great work and commitment, an effort made more remarkable when considering the number of projects we have been involved in. ## **General/Financial report** In order to clarify the financial figures provided to you tonight I need to point out that the period covered is up to 31[st] March 2021. Transactions since that date are not shown at this meeting, they will be returned on next year’s AGM statement. ## **Financial Report: Present the audit report as prepared by G. Crumpton & Son.** **Fundraising:** you can see from the audit report that our attempts at raising funds have borne fruit with donations from Swift Caravans/Heron Foods/ Wykeland/BAE Unite/ Williamsons Solicitors. We have welcomed on board a local business man who has made personal substantial funds available to us with the added bonus of Gift Aid. I personally believe that without this benefactor’s generous contribution the Memorial vision would have needed to be greatly diluted. Our collection boxes are still a regular source of income realising modest amounts from the general public which is greatly appreciated. STAND organised a concert kindly suggested and performed by Hull Male Voice Choir which was profitable to the tune of £400.62 On a sad note we have again benefitted from bereavements, whereby a number of family’s have donated the collection from their loved ones funeral service, the most recent being Terry Easter’s family for £345.15. We have also received a grant of £1500 from the Hull: Yorkshire Maritime City Project which is specifically for the creation of Information Boards on the Memorial site. Pending also is STAND’s involvement in the ASDA Green Token Giving Scheme. We are one of three candidates vying to receive either of the awards of £500, £400 or £300. It would help STAND’s cause if you could vote online once a week - until the end of September. The link to vote is www.asda.com/green tokens **Membership Renewal:** although membership suffered as a result of the pandemic, membership renewal for April 2022 – 2023 currently stands at 70. Receipts received including donations total £486. **Project Management:** on STAND’s behalf Citycare have been hired on an agreement to manage the Memorial Project at what appears to be a very helpful cost. The year up to June 2022 has been difficult with the main drawback being the continued effects of the virus. In addition legal and administrative progress has been extremely slow. At this moment in time there is a team from different stakeholders involved in forwarding the important step of planning and construction. This progress comes after a preferred contractor ESH pulled out of the project at a vital stage, again causing a costly delay. **Environment Agency:** This year has seen the flood defence work of the EA completed on St. Andrews Quay with the wall designed to assist the integration of STAND’s Memorial. This work caused the memorial project to be halted with the focal point figures having to be removed and placed in storage. It is hoped the project will be re-instated next month July 2022. This break in continuity has cost STAND financially and time wise. ## **The Memorial Project:** It is fair to say that procrastination has been the main detriment to the progress of the Memorial. The landowners and KHCC took an age, (two years) to finally sign an agreement before making KHCC the leaseholders of the Memorial site. The major obstacle appeared to be the legal regulations by the landowners Orchard Street, who were very reluctant to grant a lease suitable to STAND i.e. 30 years lease term. The Memorial Project itself is proving a very difficult programme of work, in which we experienced more lows than highs. Although the project now has a lease in place and a team of planners and construction people are involved, a further obstacle has arisen. The delays, caused by circumstances beyond our control, have caused astronomical price rises to material and labour, which is driving the final costing to a continually increasing budget figure. This issue has led to STAND scrutinising the design/costing with a view to reducing specific large value features within the site. These include the arrival walls, the interpretation wall and the screen fencing. It may be possible to use alternative materials in all these features thereby reducing the cost to within the available budget. **Lost Trawlermen Day:** the holding of the Lost Trawlermen’s Day Service has had to be held in a different format recently. The E.A. flood defence work meant that the Service could not be held on St. Andrews Quay in 2020 and St. John the Baptist Church came to the rescue with the Service taking place at the church. In 2021 the Covid-19 restrictions meant that no gathering was allowed which led to a virtual Service being posted online. In January 2022 normal programme was resumed with a large congregation attending St. John’s to a live Service. The City of Hull Brass Band supported us at all the events and were a greatly appreciated feature of the Services. The date for holding of the next remembrance Service will be Sunday the 29[th] January 2023. **The Arctic Corsair:** the refurbishment of the Arctic Corsair and her move to the North End shipyard is well underway with the vessel still in Dunstan’s Ship Repair yard. It is clear from the time that has elapsed since she was taken out of service that the action was much too early and may not be completed until late 2024. This unfortunately has left the volunteer workforce in limbo, and will probably result in some of them not returning when the Corsair is back in her new dry dock, a point I made at our last AGM. The Corsair visitors centre (unit) which was an extremely interesting and popular place with visitors has basically been destroyed. The space is now being used as both a storage area and as a place of restoration of artefacts. Left open the Unit exhibits could have been a valuable means of keeping the Corsair and the fishing heritage in the public domain until the new location is up and running. Since the programme of work organised by the Museum Officers commenced there has been no maritime attraction open for the public to visit. The new visitor centre at the North End shipyard has limited capacity for exhibiting the vast number of artefacts previously on display meaning that many of them will remain in storage for years. STAND’s exhibits and their role in the running of the Unit have been sacrificed and there appears to be no plans to provide an alternative venue. **Community:** STAND has in the past carried out talks and events including visits to schools, residential homes and other adult groups. Again this practice has been curtailed due to Covid rules and general health issues. Currently we have no such events planned. We continue to receive historical information & photos from people and we offer help, advice & information to people who have enquiries about relatives or events re: the fishing industry or community in Hull. We have recently worked in partnership with a musician, Peter Clement from Leicestershire who has written some folk songs about aspects of Hull’s fishing history. These songs can be found on our website. Recently we received a communication from the son of a Norwegian shipping agent with a poignant story relating to the loss of the Gaul in 1974. We continue to attend and support Civic & Remembrance Services. **Any other business:** Hessle Road reunions, hugely popular and very profitable events have been disbanded. The last event saw a marked decline in attendance and organisers found it difficult to solicit time and talent from artistes. These evenings require a great deal of organisation and are stressful for those coordinating the event. Future social gatherings of this kind may need to be of a less difficult nature. The Hull Male Voice Choir has offered their talent and time in the Autumn of 2022 to put on a fundraising concert at Hessle Town Hall. ## **Elections:** In accordance with the Constitution, the incumbent Committee now stand down but may remain eligible for re election. Currently there are five Trustee vacancies available to any member who wishes to apply. Any member wishing to be considered for election may be asked to make a brief statement to the members present explaining what they can offer to the group. Should there be more applicants than positions the decision of who will be elected will be voted on by the membership present. Five applications have been received in advance of this meeting.
