## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2024**

## **FINANCIAL RESULTS**

We are thankful for the Lord’s continuing goodness to us as a church.

Regular giving and gifts to our unrestricted general funds, including Gift Aid and interest, totalled £23,835, a slight increase compared to 2023. Costs including remedial work on the electrical systems and higher depreciation were £25,265. However, the church was blessed in receiving a generous £30,000 legacy which resulted in a net Unrestricted Fund surplus for the year of £28,570 (2023: surplus of £5,149). In addition, the trustees approved capital spending totalling £10,224 (including costs of a new noticeboard and defibrillator).

We continued to apply the restricted Minister Fund reserves to funding the Pastor and his family’s accommodation rentals and related costs. A total of £25,790 (slightly over half the 2024 opening Minister Fund reserves balance of £51,382) was spent during the year, and the balance transferred to designated funds at the year end. A further £24,596 was then designated from unrestricted funds, to reflect the one year lease extension to early September 2026, leaving a total designated Pastor’s Accommodation balance of £50,188 at the 2024 year end, which is estimated to be sufficient to fund the Pastor’s accommodation and the related costs through to early September 2026 (which will be 3 years in total).

The Children’s Groups fund balance of £2,532 brought forward into 2024 was increased by those attending Play Cafe on a Monday and was used to pay support to the children’s group leader and purchase items required for the children. Play Cafe finished in July when Laura Cox, the children’s group leader, resigned. The remaining Children’s Groups fund balance at the end of 2024 (£526) has been transferred to designated funds and will be used to purchase items for the children who attend Tiny Tunes on a Tuesday, which still continues.

The overall financial surplus in 2024 was £744, reflecting the substantial legacy received but offset by a full year of Pastor support costs, compared to an overall deficit in 2023 of £5,023.

## **PURPOSE**

The purpose of the church is to advance the Christian faith and to

- worship God in every part of personal and corporate life,

- make disciples of Jesus Christ, who gladly obey Him,

- make known the Gospel of Jesus to as many people as possible,

- equip Christians for ministry and to encourage them to use every spiritual gift provided by God in love, in accordance with the Scriptures and enable the expression of such faith through lifestyle, social action and community involvement consistent with Biblical teaching.

## **AIMS**

Sandcross Church operates as an undenominational gospel mission work in conformity to the covenant on its land. This is achieved through all the activities of the church in an integrated manner. As a result, worship, teaching, training and mission are the reasons for every activity and aspect of the church’s life. This follows the Biblical pattern of church life in which there is a continuous cycle of disciple-making, disciple-equipping and disciplesending to make more disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ - all within a framework of worship and Biblical teaching.

## **PUBLIC BENEFIT**

The charity acknowledges its requirement to demonstrate clearly that it must have charitable purposes or ‘aims’ that are for the public benefit as set out below. Details of how the charity has achieved this are provided in the Trustees report. The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit before deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

## **REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES**

Sunday worship and Bible teaching services continued as our primary ministry to our members and visitors to Sandcross Church under the leadership of Pastor Gregory Park. Several speakers came from Christchurch Banstead during the year to support us with preaching and leading of our Sunday services, for which we are very grateful.

Other activities continue to be undertaken including:-

- Literature ministries, including Bible reading notes and library.

- Welcoming ministries, including housekeeping, building services, hospitality, refreshments and stewarding.

- Technical services, including audio, video projector, website and IT.

- Ministry support, including transport, church office, treasury, communion preparation, data management, child protection, safe guarding and health and safety, with Pastoral support including home visits, hospital visits.

## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES (continued) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2024**

## **REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES (continued)**

These ministries were predominantly delivered by serving members and others who serve the Lord in a voluntary capacity, but some are now also undertaken by the new Sandcross pastor.

We are grateful to all who have faithfully and loyally contributed to the ministry of the church during 2024.

## **SUMMARY OF THE MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE YEAR**

## **Key Objectives**

- Develop the Biblical pattern of church life where worship, teaching, training and mission is focused on disciple-making, disciple equipping and disciple-sending.

- Maintain appropriate governance arrangements.

## **TRUSTEES, STAFF & MEMBERS**

Our children’s group leader, Laura Cox, regretfully informed us that she, and her family, would be leaving Sandcross and moving to Reigate Baptist Church where she felt that there were greater opportunities for her, her husband Andrew, and their three children, Amelia, Mayah and Elia. Laura was paid on a part time basis of ten hours per week as a children’s group leader, involved with Play Cafe on a Monday and Tiny Tunes on a Tuesday. She also ran Sunday School and outreach activities. Her role in these areas ended in July. She was supported by other church members but it was not possible to continue with the Monday children’s group. Tiny Tunes, however, on a Tuesday continues and is very popular. Laura’s daughter, Amelia, was undertaking baptism training but this also ceased.

We are grateful for our pastor Gregory and that churches in his home country of South Korea continue to support him financially. We provide housing for Gregory and his family and trust that we shall, at some point, be able to provide fully for him. Early on in 2025, we were able to extend the lease on their home out by a year to early September 2026.

Wesley Tossell, a faithful member of this church, passed away 29th February 2024. He was a serving member of Sandcross Church for sixty three years. A thanksgiving service for his life and witness was held on 5th April 2024 and was attended by his family. This was followed by the planting of a red rose in the front garden of the church in his honour. Then in August 2024, we received a very generous legacy of £30,000 left to the church by Wesley and the trustees are looking at various uses of these funds for major improvements.

In October a further thanksgiving service was held for Betty Lake, who was for many years a serving member of the church where she played the piano for the church services. The thanksgiving service was very well attended by her family and friends.

In April we received a very generous offer from a member of Reigate Baptist Church to play the piano, once a month, at a Sunday morning service. This offer was accepted and it has been very well received. We are extremely grateful.

We are actively looking at enlarging the staff team and trustees from amongst our serving members and we are trusting the Lord that this will be possible, in His good timing.

## **MISSION INTERESTS**

The church has maintained its support of its mission partners and their ministries:

- Chris and Camica Hemborough; Project Mozambique Plus.

- Stephen and Irene Tucker; Wycliffe Bible Translators.

- Sparkfish (local school’s work).

- Lionel and Katy Clargo; Counties (retired)

- Hillary Millard; formerly Head Teacher at Amano Christian School, Zambia.

- Rick and Alanna Creighton, JETS Theological College, Jos, Nigeria

## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES (continued) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2024**

## **MISSION INTERESTS (continued)**

During 2024 we appreciated visits from Chris Hemborough, Rick and Alanna Creighton and a representative from Sparkfish. Each reported on their mission work and thanked Sandcross for the ongoing prayer and financial support they receive.

## **CHURCH GROUPS AND EVENTS**

The weekly parent and children’s group “Tiny Tunes” takes place on a Tuesday morning and continues to be popular. “Play Cafe” the Monday group was very successful and sometimes oversubscribed but had to cease in July following the resignation of Laura Cox.

Sandcross Strollers continues to be very well supported with a collective walk once a month on a Saturday afternoon

The Wednesday afternoon and evening “Thrive” and bible study group continues and is very popular. Once a month the Thrive programme includes a prayer meeting and also Home Group sessions.

A men’s breakfast was held in March and a family outreach brunch service was held in March, June and again in November.

Hope Explored - a three session evangelistic course - was held in February with four guests attending as well as our church family. A further Hope Explored course was held in November.

A new initiative “Open Church”, started in April, where the church is available on a Wednesday morning for anyone to come along for refreshments, prayer and conversation.

A thank offering service was held in April and the sum of £1,868 was donated to the church for which we are grateful.

Our Annual Church Meeting was held in September where our Pastor Gregory reflected on what makes a church healthy in God’s eyes. All serving members present were reminded of the activities undertaken in 2023, updated on the church finances and advised of the works and programme in progress and planned for the rest of 2024 and into 2025. Testimony and encouragements were shared and prayers of thanksgiving offered for the Lord’s sustaining.

Also in September a weekly Monday evening zoom prayer meeting was introduced, to pray specifically for the church family and outreach, which has proved to be very successful.

An evangelistic concert was held in October with the singer and songwriter Bryn Haworth, this proved to be very popular with a full church.

The church held it’s usual Christmas services including a “Christmas Story” service for the Tiny Tunes children.

## **BUILDING WORK & I.T**

The leaking flat roof which was replaced in 2022 had some problems and these were eventually remedied in December.

The purchase and installation of a new noticeboard and lighting was completed in the Spring of 2024. Replacement lighting in the main church building and prayer room was installed in January 2025, funded from Wesley’s legacy, and improvements carried out to the fire alarm system.

We wished to add a storage shed in the church garden ourselves, and we were approached by Sparkfish, a children’s educational charity, in February 2024 who asked if they also could have use of a similar storage unit in our garden. This was agreed and planning permission sought from the local authority. Planning approval was obtained in February 2025, and a shed has now been installed. The trustees will agree a basis of access with Sparkfish.

## **RESERVES POLICY**

The Trustees’ policy is not to accumulate available reserves unless deemed necessary or prudent prior to making a commitment to new ministries, projects, staff or facilities. The Trustees have accumulated some reserves specifically to fund our Pastor’s accommodation and related support for a three year period.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS**

I report to the trustees/members of Sandcross Church on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31st December 2024.

## **RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIS OF REPORT**

As the charity’s trustees of the Company (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”).

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited for this year under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”). In carrying out my examination, I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act).

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that:

- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; or

- the accounts do not accord with such records; or

- the accounts do not comply with relevant accounting requirements under section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 other than any requirement that

- the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

- the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **SANDCROSS CHURCH**

(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2024**

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**

## **Summary of significant accounting policies and key accounting estimates**

The principal accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all the years presented, unless otherwise stated.

## **Statement of compliance**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102). They also comply with the Companies Act 2006 and Charities Act 2011.

## **Basis of preparation**

Sandcross Church meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy notes.

## **Preparation of accounts on a going concern basis**

Preparation of the accounts is on a going concern basis. The Trustees are of the view that the level of reserves will support the charity going forward.

## **Changes to accounting estimates**

No changes to accounting estimates have occurred in the reporting period.

## **Income**

## _**Recognition of Income**_

These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SOFA) when:

- the charity becomes entitled to the resources;

- it is more likely than not that the resources will be received; and

- the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability.

## _**Income with Related Expenditure**_

Where income has a related expenditure (as with fundraising or contract income) the income and related expenditure are reported gross in the SOFA.

## _**Grants and Donations**_

Grants and Donations are only included in the SOFA when the charity has unconditional entitlement to the resources.

## _**Tax Reclaims on Donations and Gifts**_

Income from tax reclaims are included in the SOFA in the same financial period as the gift to which they relate.

## _**Contractual Income and Performance Related Grants**_

This is only included in the SOFA once the related goods or services have been delivered.

## _**Gifts in Kind**_

Gifts in kind are accounted for at a reasonable estimate of their value to the charity or the amount actually realised. Gifts in kind for sale or distribution are included in the accounts as gifts only when sold or distributed by the charity. Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SOFA as incoming resources when receivable.

## _**Donated Services and Facilities**_

These are only included in incoming resources (with an equivalent amount in resources expended) where the benefit to the charity is reasonably quantifiable, measurable and material. The value placed on these resources is the estimated value to the charity of the service or facility received.

## _**Volunteer Help**_

The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described in the Trustees' annual report.

11

## **SANDCROSS CHURCH**

(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (continued) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2024**

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES (continued)**

## **Expenditure**

## _**Governance Costs**_

Include costs of the preparation and examination of statutory accounts, the costs of the Trustees' meetings and cost of any legal advice to trustees on governance or constitutional matters.

## **Assets and Liabilities**

## _**Fixed Assets**_

These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least £500. They are valued at cost or, if gifted, at the value to the charity on receipt.

Depreciation is calculated at a rate to write off the cost of tangible fixed assets on a reducing balance over their estimated useful lives charged to the SOFA. The rates applied per annum are as follows:

|Equipment|25%|
|---|---|
|Land & Building|Nil|

No depreciation is charged to freehold property as the property is maintained to such a standard that the estimated residual value is not less than cost. The useful economic life of these assets is so long and residual value so high that any depreciation would not be material. These assets are subject to annual impairment reviews. Provision will be made if there has been any permanent diminution in value.

## _**Liability Recognition**_

Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources.

## _**Debtors**_

Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently, they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received.

## _**Creditors**_

The charity has creditors which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade discounts.

## **2. TANGIBLE FIXED ASSETS**

Church buildings have been depreciated previously, but the trustees consider that having regard to the ongoing maintenance of the property (the costs of which are charged to the SOFA) it is not appropriate to depreciate the cost of church buildings. Land is not depreciated.

The annual commitments under non-cancelling operating leases and capital commitments are as follows:

## **6. RESTRICTED FUNDS**

In previous years, the church presented certain internal earmarked funds as restricted. Following a post year-end review by the trustees, it was confirmed that these funds were not subject to any external restrictions but had instead been internally designated for specific purposes by the charity. As such, the balances remaining at the year-end have been reclassified and transferred from restricted funds to designated funds.

Specifically, the trustees have designated funds for the Pastor’s Accommodation costs and our Children’s Groups. The trustees designated additional unrestricted funds to cover the Pastor’s Accommodation costs to early September 2026.

Details of the amounts transferred and now held by the church as designated funds are provided in note 7 below.

**Minister Fund:** Reserves remaining to support the ongoing accommodation, council tax and related costs of our pastor and his family. The Minister's Fund is an amount earmarked by the Trustees, and not donors. Therefore it is no longer classified as restricted, and the balance remaining at the year-end has been transferred to designated funds.

**Mission Fund:** see Note 5 Grants above for details of Institutional and Individual donations. The missional fund is no longer active as all grants are now spent from unrestricted funds. The fund is no longer recorded separately and accordignly has been closed.

**Children's Groups** : Attendance fee income received for children attending our Play Café and Tiny Tunes groups is used to fund the costs of running those groups. The balance remaining at the year-end has been transferred to designated funds for the costs of Tiny Tunes.

## **Designated Fund – Pastor’s Accommodation**

The trustees have designated £50,188 from a combination of restricted and unrestricted reserves to cover the lease and associated housing costs for out pastor and his family through to early September 2026. This includes an estimated provision for council tax for 2026. As the council tax figure is not yet known, an estimated amount of £2,450 has been included, based on current rates and expected inflation. The final cost may vary, and this designation may be revised accordingly. The designated fund also included a Children's group intended to cover the cost of Tiny Tunes. Both designated funds were created on 31st December 2024 by transfer from restricted and unrestricted funds.

No employees received employee benefits (excluding employer pension costs) for the reporting period of more than £60,000 during the financial year. Support was provided during 2024 to our Children’s Groups leader but, as noted in the Report of the Trustees, the support costs of our Pastor are funded by his supporting Korean Churches for which the Trustees are very grateful.

The average number of employees during the year was: 1 (2023 - 1)

## **13. TRUSTEES AND OTHER RELATED PARTIES**

The Trustees have individually made regular donations to the Church throughout the year. The amount donated by trustees to the charity during this financial year was £6,672 (2023 - £8,185). No conditions were attached to these transactions.

No other payments were made to Trustees or any persons connected with them during this financial period, other than reimbursement for items bought on behalf of the Church. No other material transaction took place between the organisation and a trustee or any person connected with them.

## **14. PRIOR YEAR ADJUSTMENT**

A prior year adjustment of £138 has been made to correct depreciation that was understated in the previous year due to a fixed asset addition being omitted from the depreciation calculation. This adjustment has been recognised directly in reserves and has no impact on the current year’s surplus or deficit. Comparative figures have not been restated as the adjustment is not material.
