## **SANDCROSS CHURCH**

(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)

## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2022**

## **FINANCIAL RESULTS**

We are thankful for the Lord’s continuing goodness to us as a church and for a financial surplus in 2022 of £9,465 for the year (surplus of £1,875 in 2021).

## **PURPOSE**

The purpose of the church is to advance the Christian faith and to

- worship God in every part of personal and corporate life,

- make disciples of Jesus Christ, who gladly obey Him,

- make known the Gospel of Jesus to as many people as possible,

- equip Christians for ministry and to encourage them to use every spiritual gift provided by God in love, in accordance with the Scriptures and enable the expression of such faith through lifestyle, social action and community involvement consistent with Biblical teaching.

## **AIMS**

Sandcross Church operates as an undenominational gospel mission work in conformity to the covenant on its land. This is achieved through all the activities of the church in an integrated manner. As a result, worship, teaching, training and mission are the reasons for every activity and aspect of the church’s life. This follows the Biblical pattern of church life in which there is a continuous cycle of disciple-making, disciple-equipping and disciplesending to make more disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ - all within a framework of worship and Biblical teaching.

## **PUBLIC BENEFIT**

The charity acknowledges its requirement to demonstrate clearly that it must have charitable purposes or ‘aims’ that are for the public benefit as set out below. Details of how the charity has achieved this are provided in the Trustees report. The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit before deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

## **REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES**

The church continues to pray for God’s guidance in appointing a pastor at Sandcross Church.

The church continues to work closely with Reigate Baptist Church in our children’s work and with their senior pastor, Mike Williams, preaching regularly at Sandcross Church.

Other activities continue to be undertaken including:-

- Literature ministries, including Bible reading notes and library.

- Welcoming ministries, including housekeeping, building services, hospitality, refreshments and stewarding.

- Technical services, including audio, video projector, website and IT.

- Ministry support, including transport, church office, treasury, communion preparation, data management, child protection, safe guarding and health and safety.

These ministries were predominantly delivered by serving members and others who serve the Lord in a voluntary capacity.

We are grateful to all who have faithfully and loyally contributed to the ministry of the church during 2022.

## **SUMMARY OF THE MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE YEAR**

## **Key Objectives**

- Develop the Biblical pattern of church life where worship, teaching, training and mission is focused on disciple-making, disciple equipping and disciple-sending.

- Maintain appropriate governance arrangements.

## **SANDCROSS CHURCH**

(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)

## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES (continued) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2022**

## **MISSION INTERESTS**

The church has maintained its support of its mission partners and their ministries:

- Chris and Camica Hemborough; Project Mozambique Plus.

- Stephen and Irene Tucker; Wycliffe Bible Translators.

- Sparkfish (local school’s work).

- Lionel Clargo; Counties (retired)

- Hillary Millard; formerly Head Teacher at Amano Christian School, Zambia.

- Rick and Alanna Creighton, JETS Theological College, Jos, Nigeria

## **CHURCH GROUPS AND EVENTS**

The weekly parent and childrens groups which takes place on a Monday and Tuesday morning called “Play Cafe” and “Tiny Tunes” respectively for children under five, continues to be very successful and, on occasion, is over subscribed. We appreciate the support given to these groups by Reigate Baptist Church who assist with running the groups.

The Sandcross trustees and staff team members met with the Reigate Baptist Church leaders to see where both churches could assist each other.

A celebration service followed by a lunch and an afternoon of games and church family fun was held on Sunday 5th June in respect of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a Jubilee quiz and fish and chip supper on Saturday 11th June. A family fun time was held on Friday 3rd June as the start of the Jubilee weekend celebrations.

A light party for children was held in October and was very well attended with some seventy children and parents and with activities in the church and garden. Once again we are grateful to the support given to us by Reigate Baptist Church. Several of our members assisted them with a Christmas service taking part as “characters” from the Christmas story.

The Sandcross Strollers recommenced during the year with a collective walk once a month on a Saturday afternoon, this has proved to be very popular.

The Wednesday evening “Thrive” bible study group continues and is very well supported with a Hope Explored course over several weeks at the beginning of the year. This was followed up with two Christianity Explored courses which attracted several new people to the Wednesday evening meetings. A series on the life of the apostle Paul and a series given by one of the trustees on the Tabernacle was also undertaken and again proved to be very successful.

## **BUILDING WORK & I.T**

The replacement of the leaking flat roof was undertaken in 2022 with remedial work to resolve some teething problems completed in 2023.

Replacement lighting and sound system for the auditorium has been carried over into 2023 following the renovation of the roof.

Work on the foyer and general decoration has also been carried over following this essential roof work.

## **RESERVES POLICY**

The Trustees’ policy is not to accumulate available reserves unless deemed necessary or prudent prior to making a commitment to new ministries, projects, staff or facilities. The Trustees have accumulated some reserves specifically to fund a new pastor.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS**

I report to the trustees/members of Sandcross Church on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31st December 2022.

## **RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIS OF REPORT**

As the charity’s trustees of the Company (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”).

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited for this year under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”). In carrying out my examination, I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that:

- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; or

- the accounts do not accord with such records; or

- the accounts do not comply with relevant accounting requirements under section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 other than any requirement that

- the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

- the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **SANDCROSS CHURCH**

(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2022**

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**

## **Summary of significant accounting policies and key accounting estimates**

The principal accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all the years presented, unless otherwise stated.

## **Statement of compliance**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102). They also comply with the Companies Act 2006 and Charities Act 2011.

## **Basis of preparation**

Sandcross Church meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy notes.

## **Preparation of accounts on a going concern basis**

Preparation of the accounts is on a going concern basis. The Trustees are of the view that the level of reserves will support the charity going forward.

## **Changes to accounting estimates**

No changes to accounting estimates have occurred in the reporting period.

## **Income**

## _**Recognition of Income**_

These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SOFA) when:

- the charity becomes entitled to the resources;

- it is more likely than not that the resources will be received; and

- the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability.

## _**Income with Related Expenditure**_

Where income has a related expenditure (as with fundraising or contract income) the income and related expenditure are reported gross in the SOFA.

## _**Grants and Donations**_

Grants and Donations are only included in the SOFA when the charity has unconditional entitlement to the resources.

## _**Tax Reclaims on Donations and Gifts**_

Income from tax reclaims are included in the SOFA in the same financial period as the gift to which they relate. In the case of 2021, we made an opening balance adjustment for accrued Gift Aid income receivable that was inadvertently missed from the 2020 accounts, as described in Note 13.

## _**Contractual Income and Performance Related Grants**_

This is only included in the SOFA once the related goods or services have been delivered.

## _**Gifts in Kind**_

Gifts in kind are accounted for at a reasonable estimate of their value to the charity or the amount actually realised. Gifts in kind for sale or distribution are included in the accounts as gifts only when sold or distributed by the charity. Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SOFA as incoming resources when receivable.

## _**Donated Services and Facilities**_

These are only included in incoming resources (with an equivalent amount in resources expended) where the benefit to the charity is reasonably quantifiable, measurable and material. The value placed on these resources is the estimated value to the charity of the service or facility received.

## _**Volunteer Help**_

The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described in the Trustees' annual report.

## **SANDCROSS CHURCH**

(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (continued) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2022**

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES (continued)**

## **Expenditure**

## _**Governance Costs**_

Include costs of the preparation and examination of statutory accounts, the costs of the Trustees' meetings and cost of any legal advice to trustees on governance or constitutional matters.

## **Assets and Liabilities**

## _**Fixed Assets**_

These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least £500. They are valued at cost or, if gifted, at the value to the charity on receipt.

Depreciation is calculated at a rate to write off the cost of tangible fixed assets on a reducing balance over their estimated useful lives charged to the SOFA. The rates applied per annum are as follows:

Equipment 25% Land & Building Nil

No depreciation is charged to freehold property as the property is maintained to such a standard that the estimated residual value is not less than cost. The useful economic life of these assets is so long and residual value so high that any depreciation would not be material. These assets are subject to annual impairment reviews. Provision will be made if there has been any permanent diminution in value.

## _**Liability Recognition**_

Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources.

## **2. TANGIBLE FIXED ASSETS**

Church buildings have been depreciated previously, but the trustees consider that having regard to the ongoing maintenance of the property (the costs of which are charged to the SOFA) it is not appropriate to depreciate the cost of church buildings. Land is not depreciated.

The annual commitments under non-cancelling operating leases and capital commitments are as follows:

31-Dec-22 None 31-Dec-21 None

**Minister Fund:** Reserves remaining to support the future costs of a minister or mission leader, when appointed. No costs have been incurred by the Minister Fund since the Families Minister left at the end of July 2020. Additional funding/reserves may be transferred from unrestricted General Fund reserves if required upon or after the appointment of a pastor or mission leader.

**Mission Fund:** see Note 5 Grants above for details of Institutional and Individual donations. Missional grants are no longer considered restricted, as in recent years they have been funded from unrestricted income rather than specific giving for our mission partners.

**Children's Groups:** Attendance fee income received for children attending our Play Café and Tiny Tunes groups is used to fund the costs of running those groups and the net surplus for 2022 is held as Restricted for future investment in equipment and potentially to provide the support required to continue running of these groups beyond Summer 2023.

The restricted funds are wholly represented by the Charity's cash reserves and Debtors.

## **13. OPENING BALANCE ADJUSTMENTS**

An opening balance adjustment of £750 was entered in the 2021 accounts to reflect the fact that a computer purchased in December 2020 was inadvertently included within expenditure instead of being capitalised and included on the balance sheet, in accordance with the charity's fixed asset capitalisation policy.

A second opening balance adjustment of £4,517 was been entered in the 2021 accounts to reflect the fact that the Gift Aid claim/receivable relating to 2020 standing orders was inadvertently missed from the SOFA and balance sheet accruals.

Both of these adjustments are reflected as 2021 opening balance sheet adjustments.
